Hitting Potholes Deployed my Airbags

- In this episode, I drive my See thru car through potholes faster and faster to see if I can get the airbags to deploy and they did, my tests had some very interesting and unexpected results but the airbags blew no doubt.
after this episode, I definitely think differently about how potholes can damage and affect my vehicle and I now avoid them like the plague.
make sure you check out the last 2 Episodes I made with this car and potholes, it was very interesting as well links below.

Like Mythbusters once said, "the only difference in screwing around and science, is collecting the data"
That's the truth, I actually just said that yesterday while filming the next see through car episode....lol.
Not true it’s more then true it’s proof and truth I really don’t frickin know what I just said but what ever

This is why the E Class is used as a taxi, even here in Singapore. 600-700KM of 7x24 duty is common, I ask every time I board one. As someone else said, built to take it!
It's used in almost every country. In Europe mostly E or S class. Except in US.
You need yo brake heavily from 50mph as you go into the hole, really load up the front suspension. It should take out a rim then.
+Green Silver that would probably do it. I will probably revisit that after I finish up the series, the next episode is going to be pretty Epic.
I was thinking the exact same thing lol
Yep, that is what I was going to say. And it is real life because often it is too late when you see the pothole so your foot will be on the brake at the moment you dunk!
If I cannot brake quick enough, I might release the brake as I am about to dunk to ease some weight off the front suspension and tyres
It won't actually break the suspension components. The rims will get fucked if he hits a sharp obstacle too quickly, and if he hits a softer bump really quickly the suspension will simply bottom out and the tire will soften the blow, in the most extreme case the tire will blow or the in THE MOST extreme case the wheel will come off the wheel hub, but the suspension components themselves won't break.

Plot twist: The Mercedes took revenge
AYE ALMOST 1M THIS IS GONNA BE EXTREMELY AWESOME
From the same folks that brought you the Panzer tank, Mercedes!
I believe they also made the engine for the (in)famous Tiger tanks.
No, those engines came from Maybach.
Mercedes produced engines for the famous BF-109 fighter aircraft and other Luftwaffe planes and of course some military vehicles.
I was speaking in general terms, they were both German were they not? Nevertheless thanks for getting pedantic. You can un-pucker that sphincter whenever you like Christina.
said the asshole to the sphincter
Christian W Ah yes I recall it was Maybach which made the engine for the Tiger tanks, but didn't realise that Mercedes first acquired Maybach long after the the Second World War. My bad on the error there.
Here's an idea!!
So I've seen and heard commercials that new Ford vehicles have some sort of pot hole detection feature that detects when the car is going to go over a pot hole. I guess the car stiffens the suspension so the wheel doesn't sink into the whole -at least that's what I believe it does. It would be really cool to see you test a Ford car with the high speed camera and see how much of a different it makes! Love the videos!!
Parker Birtell j
Many cars have that, Ford has a pretty primitive version of it.

That aint nowhere near the worst road of chicago
Great video! It really shows what happens. I like how the suspension bounds out of the first pothole and rebounds straight into the big pothole, and all the movement in the front wheel.
That's exactly what I was noticing, it like these potholes were naturally created just for this test 😅
Awesome... thank you for uploading videos like this! In previous episode i mentioned "hit the curb"... that will destroy the suspension. 99%
You deserve a million subs. Far better than a lot of the stuff you see on youtube nowadays, and a guy who feels like a real Joe, like I could have a beer with him.
+jimbo111589 thanks ! I appreciate it
The speed of deployment of those airbags is impressive.
Matt, honestly. WTF. Are you TRYING to make enemies of your fellow Illinoisans!? It was -13°F in Aurora overnight and -4°F this morning and you go and air a clip from the WARM SUMMER/FALL!!!!! UGH!!! Its colder than a witches elbow right now and I just sat watching this thinking how warm it looks.....and you're in shorts lol.
Big thanks to Mercedes of Chicago for their awesome support!!! :-D
GREAT VIDEO!!!!
Brian Streufert LMAO !!. So true, it was hot as hell this day too. But it was only like 4 or 5 months ago funny enough. This one is just posting late because all of the stuff we had last year, with the previous Episodes. I was in a lot of trouble with the networks.
Brian Streufert he had to do editing for the video, and it must be a lengthy process. Oh, and a little time for writing captions. Like warped said, it was filmed 4 months ago.
It’s a shitting bull are you serious? Go play in traffic. You're obviously new at the Internet.
Warped Perception what network are you talking about? Do you make shows that air other places online or on TV?
Maxwaehrens sorry for not clarifying in the video but I don't have the schedule, yes on Discovery Channel. Also repackaged in other shows as well.
Another great video. Kudos to Mercedes for helping you out, eventhough you trashed the best car ever produced. Almost all taxi cabs here in Sweden is Mercedes, simply because they rarely fail. When other cars are toast, they are barely runned in.
WGwireless that's very true, and funny enough Mercedes wanted to send me a 2017 E-Class for this one. But I declined, I couldn't tear apart a brand new car...lol. thanks for watching and thanks for your feedback
almost all? where do you live? stockholm? XD rarely fail`? HAHAHA xD
rarely fail, uhh look at japanese cars. Mass produced sure but they will almost never let you down
WGwireless however they got a strong opposition from the Skoda Octavia...
The E-Class scores extremely high in European reliability surveys. My family owned a 2002 E320 W211 and now owns a 2010 E350 CGI W212. Good cars.
I laughed like hell when you blew the horn at the clueless pedestrian! 🤣😂
Watching the slomo while high is just beautiful
They just *HAD* to install that plate saying "Mercedes-Benz of Chicago".
5:42 that's why when you find a 'bubble' on the sidewall of a tire you always replace the tire - note that the bubble can also be on the other side of the tire.
Wow... seeing all the crap that things putting up with i actually feel like buying an e-class now!
+StreatBeatsAudio Subwoofers I'm telling you, that thing is built to last.
Yeah dude the E Class is a really good car. I drive a 2007 E350 that my mom handed down to me. Despite its age my friends compliment the car's looks and even more importantly, the ride. They can't believe how smooth it is. Also, they get so shocked when I tell them it's a 2007 with 160k miles on it.
The parts and repairs might cost more but it's worth it because the parts last a long time. For example, we replaced the stock suspension and battery after 11 years of use.
Lastly the car feels really safe. I got into an accident with it but I didn't feel any violent jerk and I came out unscathed. However, the Honda civic I hit was destroyed and the occupant somewhat bruised.
Thank you Benz for providing the good, and this guy for risking his life!
This is an excellent channel to show how cars actually work. Their machines like everything else they're not indestructible.
This deserves 10 million+ views
there is this HUGE tree in the suburbs near where i live. The road under it always gets clusters of small bumps and potholes. Everyone comes to a slow down or even stops and crawls over it. One day i let my dad drive my brz.. without knowing about the potholes he went 35 over them... I braced for impact... but felt nothing. It blew my mind, From that day on i realized how to better take on potholes. Sometimes, you actually have to maintain speed and just drive through them as it will cause the least harm.. sometimes you have no choice but to avoid/crawl through.
4:40 If that is not the face of determination, I don't know what is. 🤣
The honk was gold
I love you car vids. happy new year!
MEHDI BOURKIZA thank you , happy new year my friend
When you came in at the service facility they must have been like "ye i gotta take a pis, who takes this Guy?
Man, I wish I could like this series of videos twice! Good stuff!
And I was pretty surprised at how stiff the chassis was, I thought I was going to see more warping, but nope - Though those control arm bushings took a real beating.
On a sidenote, you could paint the different parts of the suspension in different colors, to make them show up more clearly on the camera.
Hey man, you might want to get that check engine light looked at, could be something small like your gas cap is loose, or your car is telling you that your engine cylinder five is about to misfire with a cracked cylinder head and shatter upon compression stroke. Just lookin' out for ya
That car has the M112 V6 engine.
It's virtually indestructible. Only serious issues they had that I'm aware of were the counter balance shaft gear would shear its teeth in the early models and the radiator/ transmission cooler would spring a leak and contaminate the coolant with trans fluid and visa versa. Most of them had it fixed in time.
Fadingbeleifs it's a joke
lol I love how the Mercedes emits a distress alarm when the airbags deploy "Mayday, Mayday, I have crashed and I need assistance!"
+MAN_ON_WHEELZ yeah I was really interesting, and if you watch the high-speed footage, when the airbag deployed the flashers also turn on automatically. But a viewer in one of the previous comments said something similar happened to his car and his car disabled the electric power steering, why would any car manufacturer want to disable the power steering if the airbag deploys?.
Oh wow REALLY?!?! I need to know what manufacturer that is, that's just friggin stupid!!!
Ads are getting smarter. Nice way to show how well made are those cars. Looking forward to next episode.
+maelgugi why thank you !!!, Glad you like my format !, I worked very hard to write these. Thanks Again and thanks for watching.

Thank you so much for what you're doing! I plan on going into diesel mechanics but I appreciate you! You're teaching the public about how their suspension system works and basically how to take care of it. Plus this is just cool as hell with all the camera angles and slow-mo! I genuinely look forward to your uploads. Quick question though! What made the airbags deploy? In my opinion they should not have deployed that easy, granted you were beating the heck out of it and did you just cut the deployed ones out after?
+Jared Ostler thanks!!. Glad you liked it. I'm not really sure what made the airbag deploy, I'm going to look further into it in the upcoming episodes. I didn't do anything to it yet, when I drive it from location to location I let the airbag down to act as a sun visor.

It's amazing how the body seem to stay "afloat" as the suspension does it job
Great testament to the tires!
2:17 lol when he went to fast 😂😂😂
It's interesting seeing that in slow motion. One of my rims received minor damage from a pothole. The tire was not damaged at all though. I'm still not sure how the rim was damaged but not the tire. The tires are not low profile and I was doing less than 20 MPH. Luckily the rim didn't need repair.
This video deserves 400k likes

Air bags deploy when impact sensors break when hit.
Who video had NOTHING to do with air bag. Didn't even say the word's "air bag ". Click bait here!!!
Rocker Pat rocker, this video was not about airbags, you may need to watch a little bit more of the video to get to the part where the airbag deploys, this video is about potholes and demonstrating how hitting a pothole hard deployed my Airbag. As I stated the airbag does in fact deploy in this episode.
Stephen Fairbanks that's true and I have heard that, but in my case here the sensors are still intact, also funny enough it seems that if the car was going to roll over to the driver's side, wouldn't the airbags on the driver's side deploy not the passenger? Just an observation I thought of as I was reading your comment.
airbag have 2 sensors impact and acceleration sensors sudden huge change in acceleration will deploy airbag
Rocker Pat you no speka da Englise?¿. Can't you read the title dumbass.it clearly says Let's find out, in English that means it's unknown whether it's going to happen or not.
Pls make a video on change in brake oil temperature on heavy braking... There is not a single video on this topic.... Most of them don't know that brake oil absorbs moisture and starts to boil if has not been changed for a long time ...

It’s crazy how sometimes if you go fast you’ll skip over the pothole and save a tire. Just a few weeks ago I saw a pothole eat a Porsche 911 wheel at 75 mph.
+bmwmsport11 omg , a 911, that's terrible and expensive.
Finally showing the airbags😂😂
Yes it can theres a video on UA-cam i just watched where he hits a hole. Essentially its the car dropping into the hole far enough to cause your bumper to hit the ground. This causes the bumper to jerk backward and basically telling it to go off. Now side airbag is due to the heavy vibration through the body causing it to trip. Seen a ZL1 Camaro with side cut out straight pipes set off the airbags
I was like wtf alien 👽 on hand slap!
This is really cool, I went through a big pothole in my e-class recently but i didn't get any tyre damage or wheel damage by the looks of it. It made a big bang. I guess it wasn't as bad as the impacts you had in this video, but it's really cool to see how the suspension behaves. Also, it does indeed appear that this e-class is built like a tank.
What did the Mercedes garage have to say about the final results here? :)
Zylon FPV thank you, as for the Mercedes garage, I had an actor drive the car in there and say that she needed it repaired, I was going to include it in the video as like a hidden camera skit, but she totally blew the part and didn't even get out of the car. Yeah it was funny though.
There you have it folks,

When you want to see some damage you need to drive a VW and not a Mercedes
Lol a VW. Nah bro. Keep it local. Drive a Chevy or Ford. You might want to wear a helmet, knee caps, neck brace. F** it. Let Iron Man drive. He’ll live.

I didn't bother watching the wheels. The wheels may bounce up and down but his face never changes...
You have great ideas, and even greater connections, lol. We all learn from your expensive experiments.
ChuddleBuggy thank you, it's all about being crazy, putting your face in front of your projects, and coming through. I learned a lot from Elon Musk when I worked with him.... Very long time ago.
That is really cool, man. Very few are blessed with the gifts and opportunities like Elon Musk has and to have worked with him is just phenomenal for techy guys like us. I know some would strongly disagree but you might have as well been talking about George Lucas, lol.
ChuddleBuggy true , it's all about leveraging your Luck and snatching every opportunity as well as alot of "fake it till you make it" amongst other things. I had a joint project with Elon and Muller right before space x , he looked much different back then. I went through hell and back last 10years but I'm back on track now and I'm doing my own thing. You will see in the upcoming episodes !!. I can't wait.
really good stuff, that was impressive! didn't know that could happen.

I want more, like this
At my collision repair shop, I had a collection of real deployed airbags. They were all cut from the wheel of a hard head on collision, then framed and hung on the office walls. Each one had a womans face in full makeup smashed into it. You could see all the detail like eye liner, blush, lipstick, mascara Ect.
Even the surface was somewhat stretched into the shape of a face. My customers loved it because it was art taken from real life.
I like you video
And your efforts to make this video
The pain I felt in my heart when that car slammed into the pothole nicely for the first time hehehehe
It’s a Benz , like u said built like a tank , do the same with competition , see who can take a beating
I think this is AMG version which is built much stronger because of racing capabilities. Bigger the engine, stronger the components. It's the same with every car.
I’ve been in a crash, and yes those are loud, but since your adrenaline is pumping it doesn’t really hurt.
Really interesting to watch =)
A curbstone may be a good way break it. I once saw a Saab 9-3 in our garage with a broken front wheel and a slight kink in the roof panel. The car was re jigged and all ok but was surprised at how the whole car bent.
Great video
Nice video, thumbs up!

Many passenger side airbags are designed to deflect off of the windshield. Adding a substantial cost to the repair of the car when it shatters the glass.
That outro music is soothing ❤️
Sheesh, I can't imagine a pothole setting an airbag off. That's shocking.

If you don’t mind me asking, what happened to your finger?
Johnny Martin no problem, it happened when I was 2 years old, my hand got pulled into a big machine with gears, crushed my entire hand, my mother told me It looked like hamburger meat.
Warped Perception that was terrifying
quangluu96 I don't really remember it, I kind of still have images in my head of walking toward the machine and being interested in the gears and touching them, but after that moment I have no recollection.
Warped Perception, not that this is the same incident that occurred to me but when I was two years old I have one memory of waking up in an oxygen tent because I had double pneumonia. You remember what happened right before your traumatic incident occurred. I remember afterwards when I woke up recovering. I asked my uncle for something to drink, I was thirsty. Only memory I've had that far back as 2. When you said you had that one memory at 2 it reminded me of that one memory I had at the very same young age during a traumatic incident, too. I don't hear that too often. :)
Warped Perception oh that's bad
At 2 year old
The wheels flying over the pothole at 45+mph was very interesting. Do you know if it is an inherent design of cars in general or this model?
Also, do you know why the curtain airbags went off? Was it a malfunction of a sensor?
Happy new year
