Heart entered the 90s with confidence. After a rough go in the early 80s, they had a big comeback with their self titled album of 1985 along with the number one single These Dreams thereafter. Bad Animals followed suit with the 2nd biggest single of 1987 with the bombastic classic Alone. As they started the new decade with their 10 studio album Brigade. It continued their chart success that dated back to 85 with their self titled Heart album. Brigade peaked at #3 on the album charts in both the US an the UK while peaking at number two in Canada, Finland, and Sweden. The lead single from the record helped carve out his success.
All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You. was written by legendary producer Mutt Lange and was said to have been written for Don Henley. Apparently the song was first recorded as "All I Want to Do Is Make Love to You" by Dobie Gray in 1979, Heart’s rendering of the song was a smash. going all the way to #2 on the billboard hot 100 half out of the number one spot by Madonna’s Vogue.
Believe it or not this is Heart's biggest hit in most countries outside of the US and the UK, as it hit number one in Canada, for a week, in Australia and reaching the top five in New Zealand and in several northern European countries. It was also nominated for a grammy for Best Group Pop Vocal Performance, another shocker, It is the only one of the band’s singles to have been certified Gold by the RIAA.
Ann tells the story of this next as well as forming the love mongers and recording music for the Soundtrack for Director Cameron’ Crowe’s love to seattle and the music scene. called Singles. Ann talks about her exposure to the Grunge scene with many big bands from the era recording at the band’s own custom built studio Band Animals in the early to mid 90s. Some great stories in this exclusive interview with Ann.

It's a shame you are not on regular tv so you can get national coverage. You are THAT good. I'd say up there with Casey Kasem and Dick Clark. Your voice is unique in which you bring in the viewer. Many props for bringing us so much information that all of us never knew, but is always intriguing to the creativity of making songs and how or why they were made.
Please do the youngsters in world a great favor and pen a book with all this info. It would be a must read for historians of music.

@@michaelburke5907 Both are pretty amazing, and maybe I’ve missed some of Ann’s range. Linda though made so many choices regarding covering so many styles!! I felt like many songs she looked at, decided what she wanted to do with it, and just did it-seemingly effortless results. She had the range, the resonance thru her range, and as much or more control over what she wanted her voice to do as Streisand did. Style can challenge muscles differently.
I had some generations of family where everyone sang, their parents started teaching them as children. I’d think it builds a different kind of strength across each person’s range, from so young-sort of how in medieval times boys were practicing with heavy swords and bows from so young their strength Far exceeded that of modern boys taking these up as hobbies now.
On the other hand-wow Ann was 70 in this interview!?!? And even her speaking voice sounds unchanged!

Been a huge Heart fan, and more specifically an Ann Wilson fan, for more than 40 years. But yes, I always hated this song. Not for the music, but for the lyrics and message. I was halfheartedly hoping, a few years ago, that just Maybe.... since Robt Plant was not interested in doing a Zep reunion tour.... that Page, Jones, and Jason Bonham would do a tour with Ann singing and Nancy on backup guitar as Led Zeppelin featuring The Wilson Sisters.... it would've been So Good! Alas.... it was never seriously considered.
Don't know if it ever was contemplated.... but since JP Jones worked with Heart on The Road Home record, and Jason Bonham was friends with the Wilsons from being their opening act on a tour, the ability of Heart to absolutely Nail any LZ tune they ever covered would seem to have made that coupling a potentially great idea. 🤔

Heart represents my own moment of awakening to the world of Rock music. I was a recruit in Marine Corps back in '77 nearing the end of my Boot camp. We had our "liberty day" for visitors prior to graduation day and I had nobody to come visit me, so I decided to roam about the base, quickly finding myself in the base library. A recently released album of Little Queen caught my eye and I thought I'd give it a listen (side note: the library had an unusual set of air powered headphones to hear music on - not sure why). I was so thoroughly hooked by the 3rd song (Sylvan Song) that I was transported to a whole new world the moment that bass kicked in, and I still relive that transformative moment every time I hear that album. I must have listened to that album 3 times before I had to leave to get back to the barracks. My very first purchase after getting liberty after boot camp was that album.

    • @yeldarbarrow3172
      @yeldarbarrow3172 3 роки тому

So much truth to that.... at least performing These Dreams, What About Love, etc. gave them a resurgence and boost to the next level. They still do some of the "hits" that were from outside writers live, with better arrangements, being that's what a lotta the folks paid for.
But that insipid All I Wanna Do has been dead and buried, with plenty good reason, since I guess the nineties? They've not done it the three times I've seen Heart in the 2000's much to my relief.

i really liked that you talked about "the night" and "under the sky", as they're the best songs off the album. I wished you talked a bit more about "Desire walks on", which was such an underrated album, that definitely deserves more credit, as it shows a period where the band dropped commercial success just to make what they wanted instead. Great video as always!

It's a weird 70's and 80's thing. A lot of folks who were adults then looked really old then, but now they are growing into it so they are looking younger and better. My mother and aunts are the same way. They look better as they get older.

I LOVE this interview!! Thank you so much! 5:59 I'm so glad you asked about "The Night" and, later, "Under the Sky". "Brigade" is actually one of my favorite Heart albums. It was the first album where Ann really started to get a little grit in her voice, and songs like "Tall, Dark, Handsome Stranger", while insipid, feature some of Ann's best recorded vocals in her entire career. "All I Wanna Do" proved you could throw crap at incredibly talented artists and they can shine it up enough to make it worthy of being a centerpiece! Ann is and always be the Queen of Rock n' Roll. I'd love to hear her and Ronnie Dio sing a duet in the afterlife - after Ann enjoys at least a couple more decades of rockin' here with us! Thanks again for reminding us of this excellent album. I felt like Heart finally made up for the 80s with this one.
Shame on you for editing out what Ann had to say about the Lovemongers' anti-war/peace message! I know we're not allowed to have opinions that upset our warmongering corporate masters, but if a legend like Ann Wilson can't talk about peace, we're in real trouble. The next thing you know, they'll censor the President in "social" media. Oh, wait! Ugh …

Sweet interview. Ann is a real rock hero. Heart's music always transports me to my cruisin' days back in west Seattle in the 70's.

Ann Wilson is my favorite vocalist, period. There is no gender involved in best singers to me. My second favorite is Robin Zander. When I saw Cheap Trick open for STP in 1997, I was shocked how he could still hit those same notes he hit back in 1977, and there were no effects (I actually also saw Cheap Trick open for RATT in 1988 and Robin Crosby had a pitch corrector for sure). Check out the video on UA-cam for Heart at CalJam. My goodness, Ann goes beyond the album even. So cool you got all these interviews with her. I always wondered what the song order would have been on "Little Queen" had the contractual rift with Mushroom not happened and the songs on side 1 of "Magazine" would have been in the mix. That would have been a deadlier album with "Heartless" and "Devil Delight".

Best 80's Heart song to me is "Who Will You Run To?"
That pre-chorus loads up the barrell so well that the chorus gets shot out like a cannon.

I have a different take on this - a Heart song that didn't get a lot of airplay but I LOVE it.
The song "Allies". It starts slow with the 'classical' sounding piano and tastefully builds... then it falls back to Ann's flute solo only to return to action with those cavernous drums that explode into the final chorus.
I get chills listening to that song to this day.

Ann looks great. I'm not talking about losing some weight. She isnt young, but looks very attractive still. "These Dreams" is my favorite of theirs. Ann is the better singer, but the way Nancy sings this song is perfect for the mellow feel of the track. You hear Ann in the chorus, at the right time. "Alone" is a close 2nd. Ann's vocals on that song are amazing.
