He’s underestimating his genius. His music is timeless which is why Tool fans will wait decades for new albums. It resonates something inside that no other band can do. Same with their shows, it’s a spiritual experience.
TOOL is art. TOOL is musical masterpiece of our time. TOOL, whether you believe in God, or a higher power, or have spirituality, is a key to that big picture. The art they create, the experience these 4 human beings give you, is simply beyond normal. Many fans talk about the “third eye” in regards to this band. This “third eye” seems to me as a form of communication between mortal human experience and the pure eternal power above. I am a Christian, but above myself is something so much powerful and full of wonder and love. No matter our opinions. We can agree these 4 human beings bring to light deep connection of musical masterpieces.
Oh my God! Thank you ❤️❤️😊❤️ finally someone feels them in their soul and Spirit! Someone who understands the intricacy and heart felt spiritual growth message one feels, especially with the growth and development and depths of these Gods Artists developed over the decades. It's cool you have such feelings for their music. I don't. I mean I dig Tool but in small doses. The only album I really like is probably Lateralus. With the rest I feel bored after 3 or 4 songs, honestly (I have almost all albums on CDs, I bought them all at once years ago because I wanted to explore their music...I didn't pay much, normal/usual albums on CDs). Tool is not my band, I guess ...but there is a Tool song I really like in particular....Reflection. Btw: I'm not really a fan of such expensive albums Tool are putting out (like with the last one). Many different and expensive versions of the same album...some buy all. Album(s) with also amazing artworks etc. but in the end I feel there is God...but God Money. 💸💸💸 That's how it is...spirituality or not. I mean spirituality must be above money and not so much money related imo. Whatever.
I felt like this was one of the rare interviews with Maynard where he, actually answers questions with legitimate responses. Throughout his career, 90% of the time, I was always left scratching my head, if not rolling on the floor laughing at his slick but sometimes confusing, other times, comical sarcasm. Like the explanation of what happened to Paz Lenchantin, leaving a perfect circle. Due to her iron deficiency from being vegan, confused, she got on the wrong tour bus with the wrong bald-headed Billy. (APC was touring with Zwan at the time).
Maynard was my neighbor in Scottville, MI. His father would cut Ash from my trees for fire wood. His father would give me home made bread and his home grown garden veggies. Now I know where Maynard got his farming talents. Maynard talks about his harvesting his grapes like I talk about harvesting my asparagus in Scottville, Mi. I never knew that I was living next to famous neighbors. I bought a bottle of Maynards' Chupacabra Blanca 2018 White table wine. I have not tried it yet. I am waiting for my family, Alexandria, to enjoy it with me. I enjoyed watching the tour of the wine grove and the mobile pizza truck. Alexis Bradow
Glad he talked about his positioning on stage and the reason behind it. How it helps with the communication and sound quality. So many people say its because he has stage fright which I never understood. The guy that fronts 3 bands has stage fright? Dont think so.
He does suffer social anxiety. He mentioned it once. Whatever the reason, he feels comfortable where he is on stage. I went to see Tool 3 weeks ago. I didn't give a flying F where MJK was standing on stage. I was in the arena when the show started. Thats all that mattered at that moment. Let's all respect MJK's position on stage and move on.
Turd Ferguson The reason why people say he has stage fright is because they don’t know a fucking thing and make up shit in your mind, I mean think about it the guy is in two other bands, He’s been doing it this long, do you think he would still have stage fright after all this time? I don’t think so. The reality of it is people like to make up stupid rumors and spread them
I saw Tool last year... and at the end of the concert a guy was talking to his friend, "why the hell is he hiding back there" And I thought oh boy you don't understand...it's the voice not the man ...I also miss seeing Maynard in the center, with his epic movements, but I find his place now equally epic. And it fits so well in the sound, in the graphic effects that you are just grateful that Tool still does concerts!
Thank you for posting this. I find it fascinating how Maynard approaches each musical piece as a puzzle and how he taps into each setting and mood. I’ve always felt what makes Tool’s music so brilliant is how each album and song is like a journey of evolution. Not just for the band themselves but also us as listeners. Helping us evolve better in body mind and spirit. So to hear Maynard talk about that.. it’s kinda like he’s acting as a translator to the music and guiding us as much as himself along the way. Thanks again for this
He’s an artist, as are the rest of TOOL. It’s not in their nature to perform for the crowd, but to present their art to their fans. I for one think it was worth the wait. 🤟
As a child I went to Disneyland, Ms. Tessmocker from the Superman movie was there with her kids at the jungle adventure cruise right in front of us. I started wanting to get her attention and my mom pulled me by the collar, and told me stop it, she is a person just like us, just trying to have a good day, leave her alone. I learned a lesson that day from my mom about respect. If you really love a person's art, fucking with them on their "off day" would be like someone from work chasing you around the mall while you are trying to buy underpants. 25 years later I happened across Danes Carey having dinner with his parent, you bet your assistance I didn't even try to make weird eye contact. Glad I didn't bother the guy, I think he's a human god now, back then just the drummer of the coolest band I ever heard with my Undertow cassette tape stuck in my truck tape player.
I get the impression Maynard truly doesn't understand his place in the world with regards to Tool's music. specifically the music. I don't know that it's a common occurrence, with "artists" like what's his name (I honestly can't remember) who believes he's the voice of a generation and a musical genius. for me, Tools music isn't "just rock music"; it's been the background to nearly every pivotal moment in my life. from my first time hearing sober as a youth on MTV to seeing them live in 2001 with my father a year before he would pass away. so many successes and failures to their music. each new recording that gets released is like a visit from my best friend and every subsequent time I replay a song it's like revisiting the moments with pictures and memories. so yea... waiting 13 years for a visit from my friends, those 4 guys who've enriched my life for the last almost 30 years. those lyrics that've brought me comfort. that music that got "my head right" to go forth with vigor. and BECAUSE I hold them in such high regard, yea; I get a little testy when it's been awhile. because I miss them. someday our time will end and that in and of itself is beautiful. Tool has been MY band since it became up to me to choose my music. I don't regret that relationship.
To Maynard, TooL is just his longest art project. He probably cannot see TooL the same way the fans do. It does seem that Danny, Justin, and Adam find a level of spirituality through the music.
It feels like he has slowly moved further away emotionally. He's very isolated from the music but i believe it is part of the performance. Not all of it. The L.A years changed him and now he keeps a safe distance.
@@strangevessels I don't understand how someone who enjoys something would even jokingly threaten to harm the people who create it. They must not actually enjoy the art, but have some delusional association with it.
How many people in this thread know Maynard or any other band member personally? Trying to understand the artist perspective from your own biased perspective is useless and is of no benefit to anyone. Listen to music, enjoy it, or not, and use your experience of the music to enhance your life. Music and art are SUBJECTIVE!!
Brilliantly stamped on the tracks! If you would all realize it is purposeful in every avenue the egos would build a fortress of command as no one spirit is in charge it must be the collaborative process! I like the front man in the back!
Only true OG's will remember when tool said, A BAND WHOULD BE HEARD AND NOT SEEN! i believe this was a question too when they came out with their video sober, def cant remember, this was somethin i heard in the nineties, n havent heard since. sometimes i feel like im the only one who remembers this 'quote'
As a huge tool fan I never understood how Maynard never really got how some of us feel about this music. To me it's not just art or they're just regular people. I mean yes of course they shit piss and fuck just like us but the emotion created from their minds creates a tangible mood inside of us that drives us, changes us. For me it changed everything. Like my philosophy, my outlook, tempered my anger my ignorance. That is real not "just rock". I just don't understand how after all these years he has that disconnect on that subject.
@@lrwiersum I did music and lyrics. Tool kind of music/lyrics is not just a job. He has something to say, to express. But to do things right, in any art expression, you have to take it (or some part, in some way) like a job, work it, to achieve the better result. I think what maynard doesn´t want to is to take him like a prophet, or any else than a artist. he doesn´t want to be worshiped in anyway.
@@mauruslateralus6687 I was about to say something like that. OFC they all know what they do isn't "just" rock," doesn't mean anyone in the band needs to say it
Great to hear an interview from Zane Lowe. No need to waste time building trust. Fantastic insight into Maynard's head. He gets better with age. Legendary artist to me.
I love that too!! All of the members of Tool are hilarious. Adam Jones had me cracking up during his Chris Jericho podcast interview. You should check it out.
He signed 6 of his wine bottles, in person, for me that I had purchased at Whole Foods, in Denver back in 2007 or 2008. Met him and Eric. Maybe it was because it was for his wine, not Tool. 🤷🏼♀️❤️
I think Fear Inoculum is a description of what it is to believe in something of the divine. Maynard is a deist and I think this album is deeply spiritual. The song is about your fear of coming into your own personal customised connection with the divine, everyone's is different but fear governs it if you are not totally fearless. I had to find my own connection before I could see his.
"The song has to have an ending. I can do all the stuff in the middle... but then you end like with: There's all this cool stuff and then there's the last season of game of thrones." So well said Maynard, both relatable and hilarious xD
Totally relating. He is so funny. People hate on him so hard, but he's really a good guy. It's the fans who get all worked up that he despises. I don't blame him.
@@jhaz89 Appreciate it. That show is alot of fun to rewatch, but knowing there will never be an ending kind of sux (everything after the last night doesnt exist to me >.
Great interview. Love TOOL and also Mr. Keenans other bands. I'd like to visit his winery in Arizona, that would be cool. Saw a guy on You Tube, apparently ultra religious, warning people away from TOOL 'cause he thinks it's a Satanic cult. He cites Freemasonry and demonic possession and crap like that. Did not want to quantify his contentions by leaving a comment of rebuttal. I would have written that TOOL is just a band, a really good one, with super talented people, true artists and great art is supposed to alter ones perceptions. When it does you know they've done their job. Keep up the great work! 😎
Professionals are professionals because they get paid to do what they do.... This guy sings. If he gets paid to sing, he sings. If people give him money for a bottle of wine, he sells wine. If you honestly feel you need a piece of him, don’t beg for a signature, buy a bottle of wine
People still think that music and art are things that should be free or cheap. Being a musician is as time and money consuming as any other profession and should be treated as such. If you truly want to support an artist don't ask for a signature and go buy his work.
I wish I could tell MJK, if you think it's worth YOUR busy time to create new Tool music with lyrics that actually have meaning and purpose, to invest years into, to continue despite some horrible fans, then why is it hard to understand that other humans also see the amazing music there. If it was just Rock then we'd be listening to other bands. Fuck Tool. It's just another Rock band. But no, it's more than that. You have helped people with their lives. There is no guide on how to react or be to people telling you that but it's true. You 5 (including Paul) made a huge impact on people's lives. You created memories and offered the tools for them to change their lives. That's huge. Nobody else did that for us. Not saying it isn't possible elsewhere but we have to give thanks and appreciate the impact you had. And so, people become huge fans. And therefore, once music stops coming out, they wonder and worry if anymore will come out. I'm sure many would've eventually agreed the run was amazing and it could've ended at 10,000 Days but if it could continue, why not wait patiently for more. It already did so much great things for us, more music could only help because we know you wouldn't bother putting shit out at this point. So yeah, it's important enough to have dedicated your careers to it and so it's important enough to us to want to hold this music up so high. It surpasses what I get from other bands. Period. Never found it. I spend hours listening to new music all the time, and have been for years. It's my passion. Not once has a band been on the same level where they continued for decades and never made a single shit record. Not even close. That's hard.
He kind of answered his own question in regards to the autograph portion. There is no "if" the music hits people that deeply, it does, it does affect the psyche. With that being said, who do we have to thank for that creation? 4 individuals who have tapped into something unknown, yeah it'd be pretty cool to have anyone of their autographs.
@@3three3three3three if they don't want to give autographs because they can't understand why someone would even want one. Why the fuck are they signing posters that go for 45 and make them worth 400$+. Then the aftermarket on the signed posters has brought some of them all the way past 2k$. The merch purchased from the website is pretty much guaranteed to arrive fucked up lol they dgaf.
Maynard is a spiritualist he speaks of the ego dont ask the ego for an autograph a spiritualist tries to go above things of ego most of tools music is about spiritualism hes saying just enjoy the music dont worry about the ppl making it
With the thought, time, effort and creativity that go into a TOOL album, would it be too cheeky to ask for a movie? I would love to hear how songs are created along with the whole bands process. It would be fascinating!!
‘Well shit man, you know we just started to feel real bad for touring for the last 15 or so years playing the same fucking songs so I could make wine and do Jui-Jitsu and shit, so we just slapped together a bunch of shit that we’ve done before but much better. Then I was like, ‘uh what the fuck did I write about in this band? Ugh fuck it, I’ll just mention spirals and fear and they’ll be trying figure it out for the next ten years. Let’s just call this a day, I have to go take a quick shit.’
I think Maynard said it perfect when he said that he didn't understand why fans would get mad at taking so long to come out with a new album the quality of the music that comes out for me is so damn good and 13 years after 10,000 Days I'm still enjoying the whole album just as much as I did when it came out but I listened to other music too I think that's another problem you have crazy obsessed people that don't have lives.... I believe that if something is great it's always worth the wait and in this case it is especially true I'm very grateful for the music that they put out and that they still get a chance to put out new albums and we still have a chance to listen to them
Because those people have nothing going on. They're waiting for the next movie, album, video game, iphone to come out. They aren't creative, just consumers.
Sorry I didn't finish that is because it is from Sammy Hagar doing his show and ask him all these questions. So you are probably exactly right. Someone copied the original show and left out Sammy Hagar asking the questions
I think all four of them put the art before themselves. Of course Danny is going like a beast but both guitar players are fairly mellow for being on stage. And Maynard's in the back to in his own thing. They are also one of the few bands that don't do jumbotron close-ups of the band so that nosebleeds can see what they're doing. They put their art on the jumbotrons. Because that's what it's about not them as people.
Why do u stand in the back... do u have any idea how loud 3 half stacks are? But most people see the singer as the Front man, their minds don’t understand that he is just one part of the whole, there is no Star... but people have expectations, they have been programed that way, which is silly!
Ænima and Lateralus. The other albums are great too. This new album on repeat listens for 6 months now will be iconic as well. Liam from the prodigy explained that the best way to know music is not to listen deeply and study the music. Rather, have it on while you are busy doing something else, and then you will know what the best music is. I couldnt agree more. Tool🔧 has been in constant rotation in my life since childhood. Starting around 97. It was obvious to me that maynard was separate from the band with this album.
I am in total agreement with this, it was because of that album I was able to open my mind and see things in a different light.. Thank you Maynard Adam Danny and Justin.
Regardless. TOOL is an anomaly. All four of the players, ultimately, are absolute genius at what they do. Musically there is nearly nothing they cannot accomplish.
I love how nothing he is saying really makes any sense if you really listen closely but yet it does lol I’m sure Maynard gets a kick outa fucking with ppl lol he does it in a way that even the interviewer is unaware but still confused
his explanation about staying at the back i get, honestly i don't really care where he's at on stage, but all his other answers they seemed like random mumbling of generalities. After 2 min. i had forgotten what he said...
The problem with many Tool fans is that TOOl is the deepest art they've experienced so they kind of over-appraise and over think it. Tool is a great band but you have to have other styles of music and artists and even art in your life. You have to like reading and painting and history and this is the right way to "get" this band. Overthinking and ascribing metaphysical mysteries to their songs is some high school shit. It's there, it's part of the flavour, but the over attention it gets shows that many Tool fans are intellectually insecure and culturally naive.
Thank you for saying this & nicely, one of the 1st times I've seen it said tactfully. I'm a huge Tool fan espc of that part of their material but yeah them, music & other artists & life are bigger then any & all of that, lol
Nailed it. I'm a gigantic fan of their music but I cringe at the countless comments where people treat Maynard like a literal God and act like they've tapped into the "real spiritual message" of the band. It's juvenile and elitist to say the least
This seems fairly common with "psychedelic" rock bands, for obvious reasons. I've seen it with Tool, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Yes and a few others. Not so much Primus or Phish since their lyrics are a little more intentionally absurdist, although the personalities in those bands still get their share of misinterpretation. Granted it also happened with guys like Miles Davis, who didn't even have lyrics. Maynard explains it pretty well. It's not about the egos or even the bodies creating the music. It's a signal that in theory anyone can pick up. Everyone can gain access to the inner dimensions that great artists draw from in creation.
I agree. Funny thing is i discovered Pink Floyd for myself "recently". And im coming from this corner. to seek the more intricate, complex and artistic music. I was clueless and thought tool was just "metal" as stupid as i was to think Pink Floyd is for old geezers lamenting about the good old rock days. Tool is rich and complex. enjoy it for its craftmanship, right :)
If they are doing this completely separate from one another how do they arrange the songs. Getting lyrics to fit into the various spaces can’t be easy.
Imagine Morrison being asked to explain a song.. this is not something i want to be asked by an unreponsive listener. He should know this question is crap. What does 2112 mean to you Geddy?? Id rather not know.
The puzzle to me is how did the person recording this interview do it... Maynard sounds like he is talking from one of Jupiter's moons... The audio quality is sooo shrill it hurts my ears - Interested in his answers, I muted it it and read the transcript instead. Ouch!
Yeah, the “sound” seems like a bs excuse. How is it that virtually every other band figured out the technical issues with having the singer front and center? He could just say “Look, I’m not David Lee Roth.” (Which is pretty much what he meant by the “clown” remark). It’s cool, but people go to a show to actually see musicians perform. If I just wanted to hear it, I’d stay at home and listen to it.
Maybe we should stop trying to find some deeper meaning in everything the almighty Tool does, only further proving Maynard’s point isn’t the first place of blowing everything so far out of proportion. Quit being such a fan girl and just enjoy good music.
He does not have to give anyone an autograph if he doesn't want to. He's not obligated to sign his John Hancock on a piece of paper cause you admire him. That makes no sense to me either.
@@rubaidaallen2764 your right he doesnt have to do that . He doesn't need to tour or make albums either. Do you really think he would do it if he had zero fan base? @@bp7770 Loyal fan here too. Saw APC in 2000, Tool in 2001 and 2002 Lateralus tour 3 times, 2006 and 3 weeks ago. F'N awesome!!!!! I agree with you. However, a small percentage of fans are quite rabid when it comes to Tool. The band attract a special kind of crazy. I don't think he chases all fans away and tells them to F off. Yeah, he's where he's at in life because of us, but maybe he just doesn't want that kind of connection. I've heard that Adam Jones, Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor are all approachable and super friendly. Maybe MJK isn't feeling it the way the other 3 do. I respect that.
The fans that really get Tool would never ask for his autograph in the first place. The whole is more than the sum of it's parts. Like all true Art. That's the difference between Tool and the Jonas Brothers. (Not knocking the Jonas Brothers. They're not terrible.. for what they are.)
He wrote MOO & Your Hands Are Dirty on our ticket stubs back in 1994 before getting on their bus lol (American Theatre show w/Flaming Lips & Failure, St.Louis Mo.)
@@strangevessels I'm a huge fan of their music. I'm not a crazed fan but I do appreciate them as 4 individuals who came together and each brought something important to the table. Who doesnt picture the band or the artist when they're listing to the song? Does maynard think people are picturing a staff of 11/8 time signature with notes and rests going by? Of course people appreciate the artists and are thankful that they exist
they are four different personalities. i met adam after a chicago auditorium show in 2006. he was really down to earth and seemed happy to meet me. we talked for about 5 min and went our separate ways. he apologized for maynard being sick which i thought was funny cus i really didnt notice it during the show but to me it just showed he cared about the experience the fans were having.
@@powmowwow I've heard the same thing about Adam Jones too. People say he's very friendly, funny and incredibly down to earth. I'm not surprised at all to hear you tell it. No rockstar bullshit. Gotta love that.
MJK and me are the same age but i really think he needs to be a bit more mature towards the fans , I love his work and the bands work but the distance he keeps from fans during live shows doesn't sit well with a lot of fans , the disengagement comes across to some that he doesn't want to be there. I can understand that happening now and again it's every show though. He wouldn't have his vineyard or luxuries without these people forking out their hard earned cash. The least he could do is show a little appreciation now and again ,just by engaging the fans a bit more.
Agreed. He comes across as kind of an asshole who tries to come off as humble. It's almost as if he doesn't recognize that he isn't in his situation just because he worked hard to get there and everyone else could too if they tried, but he was born with the ability of the creativity to be able to create music. Some people are born in a ghetto and in poverty and have shitty lives, etc. And music could be their biggest joy in life. But beyond that, yeah it's not that difficult to just be a little more gracious towards the fans (even if it's just fake). He should recognize that a lot of people idolize him just like some idolize sports stars. And whether or not he understands that sentiment, he can recognize it's a reality so he may as well just do the gratuitous thing. Not very difficult.
I would have to agree about the autograph thing I never asked for them because I think my shit don't stink and I am Charlie green thumb and I grow the best fucking cannabis on Earth
That’s such bullshit. He knows why people want his autograph. That’s why he sells posters with his autograph at the Puscifer store and some merch tables.
Blah blah. Love the band. Believe me. In my eyes they’re the greatest rock band of our time. But I hate when he tries to downplay the fact that it took 13 years and gives the “impatient” fans crap for wanting more. Let’s not forget the fact that it was you guys stringing us along for many years. I can’t count how many times I had heard interviews with the band members and they’d drop “yeah the album is pretty much finished we’re gonna be releasing it later this year”. We’d hear that constantly. And after the first few times the joke just isn’t funny anymore. Now you’re just lying to your fans. And what did we get after 13 years and a mountain of misleading information? 6 songs and a bunch of random interludes. Yeah sure. It’s art. But again....if you follow puscifer, they’re constantly releasing music. So it’s not like he can’t be prolific. He’s even talked in other interviews how you gotta force yourself to finish and force the creative process. Even heard Danny talking how for several years they’d be going in to practice for 4-5 hours a day, 4-5 days a week. Ok...so then what actually took so long? Cuz that just doesn’t make any sense. 🤷♂️
They were tied up in a long, ongoing legal battle that wasn’t resolved until 2015, so it’s not like they spent 13 years goofing off and doing other things. They couldn’t really do anything with the court case going on.
@@wavy6332 basically they were sued by a friend of the band who created artwork and wanted compensation, then the insurance company Tool hired to insure them against lawsuits turned around and sued the band themselves over a “technicality” involving the aforementioned lawsuit. It took around 7 years but got everything settled in their favor. This is also coming off the heels of some bullshit involving their old record label or something, don’t really remember. So they either were extremely unmotivated to develop new Tool material or literally weren’t allowed to until the dust settled. Luckily for us, when it did, we were all graced with one of the best rock albums released in the last 20 years.

And it fits so well in the sound, in the graphic effects that you are just grateful that Tool still does concerts!

Thank you, Maynard, for not putting any vocals over the last 6 minutes of Descending. He figured out the puzzle.

If you can read my comment. Think we might be sharing something brother

As a huge tool fan I never understood how Maynard never really got how some of us feel about this music. To me it's not just art or they're just regular people. Like my philosophy, my outlook, tempered my anger my ignorance. That is real not "just rock". I just don't understand how after all these years he has that disconnect on that subject.

If the world collectively became moved, as I was, by FI, there would be a sweeping renovation of human thinking that would save humanity.

Maynard has to understand that there is almost nothing worth listening to in music today.
That is why people want more Tool music.
Tool is rich and complex. enjoy it for its craftmanship, right :)

whos the interviewer?
He probably wrote the lyrics over one weekend and phoned them in.
If being in the back is about the sound, why is he in the dark?
Exactly...I'm making a new video about this subject.
I think it's because the lights give him headaches or something? Someone under another video said he gets vertigo so maybe that's it.

MJK and me are the same age but i really think he needs to be a bit more mature towards the fans , I love his work
and the bands work but the distance he keeps from fans during live shows doesn't sit well with a lot of fans , the
disengagement comes across to some that he doesn't want to be there. I can understand that happening now and
again it's every show though. He wouldn't have his vineyard or luxuries without these people forking out their hard
earned cash.
Let's just be real though, he doesn't want to be there...He just wants to me making wine, haha

@@xCobaltRainx what legal battle I’m curious I didn’t hear anything about that ?
@@xCobaltRainx ty for that info
Really none of our business why it takes the time it does.
