great job wore all during the 80s and out of your list i must say to this day nothing and i mean nothing compares to vintage Lagerfeld and Safari man what two amazing masterpieces, this brings tears of joy remembering those time when man knew how to behave like a man, things were simpler but classy and refined oh the good ol 80s!!!!!!!
This is what I'm talking about. Real fragrances for real men (personal opinion). Glad you did a third part. Drakkar Noir and Polo Green are missing. Waiting for the forth part.
I agree. Masculine men need to make their way back into the forefront and push these little soy boy, Starbucks drinking, man bun wearing little pussies where they belong….in the back of the room or better yet, the hallway. The feminization of the American male has to stop.
i have an deep deep emotional bond with YSL Jazz....the one you have is the follow up off the black and white plastic bottle 1st edition, the juice was still the same at that moment..........i have the same bottle, also vintage wich i used the last weeks, shoots me back to those incredibele 80s.... diff times, back than youngsters were rocking all those heavy scents....old men stuff it surely was not!
Great list and I enjoyed it and I had polo safari about 3 years ago and it's my 10 out of ten and I'm going to try the other fragrances and have a blessed day
I just look for the Oscar de la Renta on eBay and there were a bunch of them and prices reasonable. So I bought a 3oz. but was looking for the larger version bc it looks like the original one I had was 5 to 6 oz. I had the original from the around 81 and it was very popular. I had the splash version and last using in the early 90’s, there was still 85% left bc i used to use a dab or 2 and had many others I used. So when I get the one I just bought in the mail, I’ll know for sure if it’s the same size as the one I had a long time ago.
Hello... For years I have been looking for a fragrance that would be very similar to the Ysl Jazz fragrance... Only today I found out that Safari man ralph lauren fragrance is very similar to it.. Is it true?.. Or could you advise me more any other?...thank you very much.
Great series Dan! What I would like to add to the list? There are some more on my shelf like: Iquitos by Alain Delon, Dunhill for Men and Dunhill by Alfred Dunhill (this clessic brown bottle, really underrated stuff), Havana by Aramis, Bogner Man, maybe Herrera For Men by Carolina Herrera? Definitely Yatagan by Caron deserves to be on such list as well as Chevignon For Men. Maybe 1881 Men by Cerruti? Caractere by Daniel Hechter or Lauder for Men by Estée Lauder. Francesco Smalto pour Homme, Halston Z14 + Halston 1-12. Drakkar Noir by Guy Laroche, Bel Ami by Hermès, Duc de Vervins by Houbigant, Bogart by Jacques Bogart, Krizia Uomo? Esencia pour Homme by Loewe, Montana Parfum d'Homme by Montana and Salvador Dali Pour Homme. Uff, a lot of old stuff. But maybe part 4 with some niche stuff in this genre? I have some candidates like Vierges et Toreros by ELd'O or Bull's Blood by Imaginary Authors, Hyde Park by Hugh Parsons and Elite by Floris or Kinski by Kinski (EM)? Modern interpretations of this old school vibe?
You’ve got to be kidding!! Some of your choices, I say yes, but on the ones I disagree with it’s like a way way way no - as an absolutely not - Halston Z 14 being one of them that’s high school smelling to me. I wore that in high school. In fact, now I think it stinks it smelled just got out the shower and put on deodorant. I think a majority or a lot of the ones you chose, have very sweet, sweet smells to them without a balancing musk to them. So that’s probably why I didn’t care for them. I do not like sweet, sweet, smelling at all Giorgio for the original one. I loved it in high school, now I do not like it one tiny bit. I tried to force myself to like Xerius for example, you know the one in the red bottle I can’t remember the brand, but I just could not do it. Another example is “Space” sweet, sweet, smelling reminds me of when I was in the sixth grade and got my first bottle of cologne called canoe. Very very juvenile scents. Some people may say “opening or beginners colognes.” anything like that I just cannot stand. It’s so sickeningly sweet it makes me nauseous not trying to be mean just trying to be honest.
Another great video Mr.Smelly, Id choose a masculine scent every day over any of these sweetie unisex fragrances that are on the market atm. Have you tried ADP Colonia Sandalo? Would love to hear your take on this
I still weari g Jazz since 1988, but the collection one is not close to the old one. The performance is weak as the smell. I hears that safari is close to it.
Jazz is my all time biggest compliment getter ever , I got it in 89 when I was 19 and I got stopped everywhere I went by girls and older boilers all the time
So glad I'm anonymous because if my identity became known my loved ones would commit me for this... but trust me when I say that OdlR Pour Lui paired with Guerlain Vetiver works a treat. Right, back to the CBT.
Oh man I never knew that about Al Pacino I love Scarface I need that I don’t even care if that’s a mans cologne I will rock it and think of that movie. Awesome review as usual
I’ve wanted to purchase vintage fragrances but haven’t pulled the trigger because I’m concerned with the smell and quality of something that is 20+ years old. I’ve heard fragrances change and degrade over time. Is this true?
👍🏼 given! Excellent, excellent video. The fact that you put Oscar de la Renta as your first choice which is my absolute signature cologne that I wear ever since 1988, this automatically caught my interest on your reviews. Everyone that you mentioned sounds fantastic they’re just my style, I am thinking……. Because they’re all similar you stated but slightly different. I like that musky smell, not stinking no one has ever said that I smelled dated before (as in smell like a grandfather) when I wear this. Actually plain “Oscar” for men also is a favorite of mine, more modern, smelling than the pour Lui. Now I hate to admit this, but a third favorite cologne of mine, would be da Vinci, gentlemen. Now that I have been told, I smell like someone’s grandfather. But I can’t help it. I love it. My three favorites in order are: - Oscar de la renta (pour Lui) - Givenchy Gentleman - “Oscar” de la Renta- ‘Oscar’ for men So now I’m gonna try the other ones that you have mentioned - starting off with the one you call Scarface
Dan thanks for posting. Fabulous topic from my point of view. I will investigate some of these that I am not familiar with. Pour Rui and Lagerfeld Classic are greats.
DerRalle 2ZG have you found that vintage fragrances still smell as good even though they are 20+ years old? I thought they degraded into turning into mostly alcohol?
Love Safari, just picked up a newer formula bottle of that. You are the reviewer who turned me on to Kouros and that is one of my weekend frags. Great videos keep them coming! Would love your review of Canoe classic inexpensive vanilla barbershop frag.
Just one week ago i smelled safari in an airport duty free, because i read that its stings signature scent and therefore was quiten interessted. i absolutely loved it!
It’s boozy at first but the patch is amazing I didn’t like it at first then couldn’t stop going back to the sample then suddenly a bottle turned up on my doorstep, you know how it goes 😉
When I first bought it, i was sceptical, it is so mid 20th century, another world. But it is also a sophisticated scent and great bottle too. I love the deep amber colour and all for 20 quid
gotta say i love jazz got a bottle along w opium, early 2000s fantastic juices both are aftershave splashes but the power is phenominal - much better than many modern EDT or EDP
I have lagerfield, polo green, Drakkar and grey flannel. Polos one of my alltime favorites. Others I wear to troll little beta males, lol. They make faces and say.. "what are you wearing" and I reply, " You wouldnt know it, its a MANS FRAGRANCE" and laugh loudly . :) ) Then I flex my bicep and laugh again :)) #truth
Great choices....I couldn't stand these old-school (spicy-woody-mossy-powerhouse-with carnation) type scents because of allergies back in my youth, but I love 'em now after my discovering them at the tail end of my fragrance journey. I have Pour Lui, and Safari, but I don't have a Jazz...although I have considered picking-up a bottle for many years now. As for Tenere, I picked-up a 50ml bottle back in 2014 and love this stuff...but gotta get a 100ml spray bottle because I'm not a fan of the splash. I also have Lagerfeld Classic...but it's not a vintage, and the newer version is just okay IMO. Two you GOTTA try are Balenciaga Ho Hang Club and Maxim's Pour Homme. Cheers!!!
I’d be cautious about buying a vintage bottle of cologne on eBay. Quite often these scents turn bad. One fragrance that never changes with age is Polo green.
Interesting review as always! Safari is sadly underrated in the fragrance community it seems, or at least goes under the radar of most. So glad to it's getting a good thumbs-up still. My fragrance of today was eau sauvage vintage by dior. 😊
3 videos covering masculine colognes and almost none came from the last 25 years. Is it your opinion that no one is making any good masculine fragrances anymore? I admit I stopped looking at cologne about the same time because I prefer the fragrances that are typically labeled masculine. I'm disappointed but I am also reminded why I stopped wearing cologne.
Good vid! I've been meaning to check out Lagerfeld classic, almost blind bought it a number of times, trying to find a store where I can sniff it first though (I've decided to reduce my blind buys). I find Azzaro pour Homme Intense 2015 is a great (and underrated) truly manly masculine fragrance, also has a boozy cinnamon vibe, doesn't smell dated or old man-ish either.
I love these original classic Mr. Smelly videos! Maybe it's an idea to review fragrances like Tabac Original, Old Spice Original, Brut Original Eau De Toilette and Sir Irisch Moos together in one video?
Paul Sebastian Fine Cologne as a powerful, more fleshed out near-clone of classic Old Spice. And yes, Ralph Lauren Polo Green should have been on this list. Even Ralph Lauren Purple Label deserves consideration for a list like this.
Thanks Dan this powerhouse fragrance whole set you've done is great. I've got Aramis and Safari. I've only been a frag enthusiest for 2 years. Are there any powerhouse fragrances that are very popular with Women - other than Farenheight, Dior Eau Savage EDP (because of reformulutions)?
do you keep store your perfumes out of light when not filming. noticed this with other channels it looks as if they are out on display all the time. or is it a wives tale about perfumes degrading faster in direct sunlight. by the way have ever had a perfume just die in the bottle. I had a bottle of one million and about half way down the scent just went down to about 20 per cent.
Some of the Van Cleef & Arpels (Tsar and Pour homme), are very manly. Tsar smells like the YSL Jazz but more dense and spicier (it has a lot of oakmoss) meanwhile Jazz is more crisp. Pour homme it have some similarities to Antaeus, but is more floral -for me is like a dried rose- and soapy with hints of castoreum and leather. Awesome stuff Both are very cheap, and the reformulations quite good. Another fragrances would be Jacomo de Jacomo (clove and tobacco something like that, but you shoud try the vintage version) and another rare stuff is the Jesus del Pozo Quasar. Smells unique, with banana leaf note listed. Freshly spayed doesn't smell quite good (kind a chemical), but in the drydown begins the magic. Sort of fruity-aquatic-fougere.
Some really great classics here . Jazz always reminds me of being arrested on 27th December 1988 so I’m interested to purchase an original vintage bottle to see if it transports me back to that cell at Kingston upon Thames nick 😊
excellent...im gonna pull the trigger on Antaeus soon :)
Thanks Joy. You need Antaeus!
Thanks
I wore Pour Lui today. Made in France version, I smelled amazing!
The BEST fragrance I've ever smelled!
Great list. Love my Lagerfeld Classic.
Just got the Lagerfeld Classic a week ago as a gift and honestly, I like it quite a bit.
great job wore all during the 80s and out of your list i must say to this day nothing and i mean nothing compares to vintage Lagerfeld and Safari man what two amazing masterpieces, this brings tears of joy remembering those time when man knew how to behave like a man, things were simpler but classy and refined oh the good ol 80s!!!!!!!
Interesting fragrances. Appreciate it
This is what I'm talking about. Real fragrances for real men (personal opinion). Glad you did a third part. Drakkar Noir and Polo Green are missing. Waiting for the forth part.
Thanks Pancho!
LOVE Polo Green, I was able to get my hands on a 2oz cosmair bottle. its amazing
I agree. Masculine men need to make their way back into the forefront and push these little soy boy, Starbucks drinking, man bun wearing little pussies where they belong….in the back of the room or better yet, the hallway. The feminization of the American male has to stop.
Already purchased Teneré . I’m a collector of vintages . Can’t wait 🥲!!
i have an deep deep emotional bond with YSL Jazz....the one you have is the follow up off the black and white plastic bottle 1st edition, the juice was still the same at that moment..........i have the same bottle, also vintage wich i used the last weeks, shoots me back to those incredibele 80s.... diff times, back than youngsters were rocking all those heavy scents....old men stuff it surely was not!
Now THAT's a trip down memory lane!
Great list and I enjoyed it and I had polo safari about 3 years ago and it's my 10 out of ten and I'm going to try the other fragrances and have a blessed day
Hugo Boss no.1, the vintage version which was called just 'Boss' back then, and R de Capucci which is a hidden gem in my opinion.
Oh the other one that I had in the 80’s was Jean Patou and I see that’s going for hundreds of you can find it. And it’s very distinctive smelling.
Hello... For years I have been looking for a fragrance that would be very similar to the Ysl Jazz fragrance... Only today I found out that Safari man ralph lauren fragrance is very similar to it.. Is it true?.. Or could you advise me more any other?...thank you very much.

Safari is my scent , I get tons of compliments with it , Jazz I haven’t gotten yet cus the vintage bottles are going for way to much

Oh man I never knew that about Al Pacino I love Scarface I need that I don’t even care if that’s a mans cologne I will rock it and think of that movie. Awesome review as usual
great video. I guess you would enjoy vintage Daniel Hechter Character, Borsalino and vintage Photo by Lagerfeld
Oscar de la Renta is quite possibly my favorite of all time.
Man where do you find all these vintage fragrances. Awesome video.
I’ve wanted to purchase vintage fragrances but haven’t pulled the trigger because I’m concerned with the smell and quality of something that is 20+ years old. I’ve heard fragrances change and degrade over time. Is this true?

With the Lagerfeld cologne on you can say to the ladies. Say hello to my little friend.
Love Safari, just picked up a newer formula bottle of that. You are the reviewer who turned me on to Kouros and that is one of my weekend frags. Great videos keep them coming! Would love your review of Canoe classic inexpensive vanilla barbershop frag.
Thanks Stephen. Safari is great. I will look into the Caboe frag.,
11:40 I’d bet anything that vintage Lagerfeld has gone bad. The newer version isn’t as nice either.
Just one week ago i smelled safari in an airport duty free, because i read that its stings signature scent and therefore was quiten interessted. i absolutely loved it!
Nice review
Just pulled out the Lagerfield for a reminder spritz..I always get old school aniseed
NIce video as always mate !my favourite masculine is Frédéric Malle monsieur the patchouli in that is the best I’ve smelt 👍🏻🔥
I think I tried that Malle on Sunday in London. I must revisit it now!
It’s boozy at first but the patch is amazing I didn’t like it at first then couldn’t stop going back to the sample then suddenly a bottle turned up on my doorstep, you know how it goes 😉
Love the Lagerfeld Classic. It’s one of my favorites
I may be a bit late to this party, but Stetson by Coty is something I think most people overlook.
ANTAEUS ..is a winner hands down..Too bad they changed the formula and it doesn't do the older version JUSTICE....js
Did you mention Drakkar Noir?
great vid and covering exactly what im currently looking for..Safai on my list along with Azzaro The manliest i own is Dunhill for Men the 1934 beauty
Thanks John I have yet to try that Dunhill. Blind buy imminent!
Love Dunhill👍🏻
When I first bought it, i was sceptical, it is so mid 20th century, another world. But it is also a sophisticated scent and great bottle too. I love the deep amber colour and all for 20 quid

Three manly classics. The original Halston Cologne, the original Grey Flannel, and one of my favorite cheapies, Lalique Encre Noire.
Big Wheel was a real gem in the 80s and 90s.
I do not mind Karl Lagerfeld classic but my preference for Karl Lagerfeld fragrances at this. time is Karl Lagerfeld photo
You have missed Yatagan by Caron
I’d be cautious about buying a vintage bottle of cologne on eBay. Quite often these scents turn bad. One fragrance that never changes with age is Polo green.
What about Lagerfeld Photographe ? I had a sample and really love it!
Nice video us usual.
SOTD is Calligraphy Rose by Aramis
Thanks Walter I’m keen to try that Aramis fragrance.
Interesting review as always! Safari is sadly underrated in the fragrance community it seems, or at least goes under the radar of most. So glad to it's getting a good thumbs-up still. My fragrance of today was eau sauvage vintage by dior. 😊

OMG I forgot about Safari :D . I love the old Jazz, the modern blend is not as good.
Pour Lui can beat any armani or dior anytime

Halston Z-14. Enough said
Paul Sebastian Fine Cologne as a powerful, more fleshed out near-clone of classic Old Spice.

Pour lui smells far better than most very expensive scents.
