Hey Dan, great video 👌. I've actually thought a lot about this and have categorized them a little different, but definitely with some similarities to yours . How I came up with these categories, is by thinking what "essential" collection would I recommend to someone that was starting out and wanted to have a "complete" collection. The essential criteria for defining what a male should smell like came down to 3 basic types.. 1..Woody/ Spicy 2. Leather/ Animalic and 3. Barbershop scent. I've added a few more. Here's my basic list that I feel is a great introduction, has variety of scent types so your nose is always interested and engaged. BEGINNER SET 1. Fresh (same as your Fresh Manly) 2. Barbershop 3. Woods/Spicy 4. Warm/Sweet/Gourmand 5. Leather /Animalic/Oud COMPLETE SET 1. Fresh ( same as your Fresh Manly) 2. Cologne ( same a your Citrus Soapy) 3. Barbershop/Fougere /Aromatic/ Green 4. Woods/Spicy 5. Warm and Sweet 6. Leather /Animalic/Oud 7. Floral or Rose/Oud 8. Gourmand (same as your Dark Sweet) 9. Middle Eastern, Rich and Complex
I've also noticed that some of the traditional categories, especially the ones listed on Fragrantica, fail dreadfully at communicating what your nose should expect. I've seen citrus-dominant perfume classified as "oriental" and dark, woody scents classified as "fresh aromatics," etc. It's a mess. So, this was a really smart idea.
Excellent idea Dan. Even with me being a 'frag head', I still don't understand all the categories. Your categories make much more scents.......(you see what I did there?)
A few weeks ago I decided to seek clarification on these things myself, and in the interests of understanding what a fugere was, I got a decant sample of MDCI Invasion Barbare. I have to say it's wonderful - if it's representative of this genre of fragrance then I guess I'm a fan. Can recommend!
I'm missing the gigolo category from the duke of milfbury. Jeremy's teeny top10's aren't delivering the goods. Share the milf magnets, we're counting on you Dan.
I like they you recommend Pinaud Clubman. Nobody does this when discussing barbershop fougères. Pinaud introduced Clubman in the late 30s or early 40s and they absolutely dominate the barbershop market well into the 1970s when barbershops started disappearing. When people talk about the barbershop smell _THIS_ is literally it.
I think the old school fragrance families are completely out of date now with the aroma chemicals and modern way frags are made, you can get a fougere that dries down to a gourmand or citrus, completely against the natural way of things, and I think that’s fine, great vid Mr. S.
No Chanel Platinum Egoiste? You can’t go wrong with that stuff.D&G Pour Homme vintage is a classic, pity about the sprayer though. I tried a sample of Dior Homme Parfum, haven’t made up my mind about it yet,it is powerful stuff, but I still get a feminine vibe from it. I like to use Gucci Pour Homme 1 this time of year.Aventus is great too,I got a bottle of cub de nuit intense,Man it’s very close to Aventus and people like it. Enjoy your videos Man,you and Lex are my favorites. I can’t watch that Jeremy fool.Keep it up!!
My 6 main masculine categories are Barbershop, Vetiver, Leather, Oud, Tobacco, and Boozy. Then I'd add two unisex categories of Floral and Amber. Lastly, I'd have a Safe (Dior Sauvage, Bleu de Chanel, Aventus) and a Challenging (Kouros, Antaeus, Interlude Man) category. That is how I see men's fragrances.
Big Fan of your work! Love this idea. I do think you should revisit and include the GOURMAND category because there are so many being produced nowadays. Montale Intense Cafe and Black Phantom come to mind immediately, although you could probably add Black Phantom to Sweet & Dark category. Also I think GenderBender / Gender Neutral category for those Unisex frags that perhaps lean Feminine but can be worn successfully by men. I'm talking about your CD Feve Delicieuse, CD Bois d'argent, TF Plum Japonais & TF Black Orchid
This video and a couple of your others convinced me to purchase Monsieur de Givenchy, les Parfums Mythiques version. It will be my barbershop scent. Keep up the great work!
That's what a fragrance review should be about. Another fantastic job on this review. Thanks for sharing your expertise, research and passion with us. Cheers.
Ok, the JF slam-dunk opening AND the run down was just SMASHING! Ok, understand that when I say things like, "Bullocks, Bob's You're Uncle, Cheers," and the obligatory "mate," I am an American who knows not of which he speaks. Ok, on a serious note, I found my way to your chanel (humor) via wet-shaving and a short hospital stay due to dehydration after watching 3 of Jeremy Fragrance videos and not being able to stop projectile-vomiting. Great vid!
I think of Lapidus as a clubbing scent. Wearing it clubs everyone around you in the nose. :) Great for business meetings you don't want to last too long, too.
Here's how I think my current collection fits into the categories: Fresh Masculine: YSL L'Homme, 360 Red, Club De Nuit Intense Man Iris Handbag: None. Had Midnight in Paris, but hated it (rubber and baby powder). Sweet Masculine: Chanel AHS Eau Extreme, La Nuit De L'Homme, Spicebomb Barbershop: None Dark and Sweet: Pure Malt, Bentley Intense Soapy Citrus: Aqva Amara, Artisan Pure, Nautica Voyage Retro Powerhouse: None, but wore Drakkar Noir back in the day and may pick it up for nostalgia's sake. My personal faves: Pure Malt, Spicebomb, AHS Eau Extreme, L'Homme. Amara and Artisan Pure are new but I'm really liking them!
Definitely, DEFINITELY do a comparison between the old and new formulations of D&GPH. I already know my verdict, but I'm very interested to hear yours Dan. Also, in the categories you mentioned, what are the relative quantity ratios that you would recommend for the average guy to have in his collection? Perhaps 4:1:1:2:1:2:1?
Man,that Lapidus pour homme....they don't make fragrances like that anymore...what a beast!I use it very very rare, but I like to know that I have it at home:)and what a beautiful fragrance it is!A true 80' powerhouse...
Nice job, MrSmelly! I like your categories for 'fumes. Let's be honest... for most men only two categories are really important and those are "fresh manly" and "sweet masculine". Everything else is quite useless in comparison.
Nice review . . . Great guidance tips for choosing fragrances . . . especially for the novice You might want to follow up with selections for Weddings, Nights Out, Casual, Formal, Work ( office - close quarters), etc. A lot of folks could use assistance with these choices, as not every fragrance can cover all scenarios . . Thanks for sharing . . . cheers !! :)
No one really has given offerings for these special occasions . . . As a Chauffeur, I had to spend a lot of time to generate a "go to" list that would work well and cover age and gender as well as the occasion !!
Everything about your reviews is very relevant. They are funny, educational and what real men need to know about fragrances. Fantastic review. Jeremy beware.
Mr. Smelly - Really enjoyed. Thanks for all the work you put into this one! Maybe there's room for a gentleman's floral category? Habit Rouge L`Eau, and Boucheron Pour Homme are the first things that come to mind, or maybe even Platinum Egoiste?
Great work as always! I would say Aquatic clearly could go with Fresh or you could make it a stand alone. Love the Pinaud, what are your thoughts on Florida Water?
Dan, do you have some tip when buying decant testers 5-10 ml. ? I have heard I should go for the glass decants because some of the notes might be ruined when if filled up in plastic decants ? Is there any other things I should know about ?
It has that vibe to me. Versace- the Dreamer almost smells like a soap with tobacco in it. I love that one too. My wife hates soapy or masculine peppery scents. I wear them when I'm away from home lol
Fantastic video. Have you tried Murdocks Black Tea? It’s really spicy but I thought it’s a perfect barbershop scent. Unfortunately it’s a cologne so performance isn’t great....
AQUATICS! Gotta have aquatics in their own (major) category since it's such a common and popular theme that's been done by so many companies. Yes, Some can fall into the citrus woody genre (Versace Pour Homme, etc.) but I think the ones with noticeable marine notes are quite their own thing, entirely. I think all men should at least have one in their collection, even a small collection. Loving these unique types of videos that you're doing lately.
MrSmelly1977 yes I suppose you could squeeze them into those categories. But something about ADG and things like that seem to have their own unique spirit, compared to other freshies. But hey, regardless, I like this video! Big fan of your reviews man. Funny, honest and original. Keep giving us these 'different' types of videos, they keep things more interesting than the next reviewer.
Oh my god you have YSL Opium like I have! I have never seen anyone else that had that. Do you still wear it? I plan to break it out in the winter. Great review as well by using categories.
enjoy and love ur idea and concept. tks Mrsmelly 1. Does cedrat boise beats aventus in compliment category ? 2. sweet masculine any more suggestion in this category ? 3. Benley intense and opium our homme edp , is it worthy a bottle , does it sexy? l
enjoying your video BUT for list you might add fragrances names in the description to help us remember all the fragrances you talked about... a lot of great info just make it easier for us to checkout your recommendations
I like you, proper British scents of humour (get it) and you give some masculine smells that are different from what the generic JF say and I end up smelling like a "real man" according to one of the girls at work 👌🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

One of the most original fragrance review-videos I’ve seen. Nice job! Very interesting.
what an excellent presentation...detailed with examples....love this video
Thanks so much Joy. I always enjoy your passion on your channel too .

One of my favorite reviewers... I think every man should have at least one modern daring fragrance
Just came across this video now, one of the most helpful I've seen. Missing a barbers shop and also a soapy, up to then was doing good
A few weeks ago I decided to seek clarification on these things myself, and in the interests of understanding what a fugere was, I got a decant sample of MDCI Invasion Barbare. I have to say it's wonderful - if it's representative of this genre of fragrance then I guess I'm a fan. Can recommend!

Ha ha I’ll see what I can do! Thanks as ever Sjaak!
I agree on that .... we need some adult scents ;O)
Was about to write adult smells, but that didnt sound right.
Amen to that, Sjaak.
@@MrSmelly1977 I want a good business man type CEDAR cologne....that the ladies would love...have any suggestions ?
Hahaha best comment ever

Thanks for this I'm new to fragrances so it's nice to have a framework to start from.
These intros are always great
Thanks very much Bruno.
Really enjoyed to learn from your wealth of experience and straight talking Dan. One of the best videos I have seen over the years.
Thanks so much Lee!

Thanks so much . Yes Gourmands is definitely a category. I will revisit this topic and update with a few extra categories .
Add and review Salvatore Ferregamo Oumo
under Gourmand Category
Really nice blazer man. Love your work
helpful categories. i love the idea of separating the citrus woody fragrances from the soapy ones. really enjoy your videos. keep them coming.
This video and a couple of your others convinced me to purchase Monsieur de Givenchy, les Parfums Mythiques version. It will be my barbershop scent. Keep up the great work!

Thanks much appreciated pancho!
I find these videos with a broad theme enjoyable and helpful. Thanks Mr. Smelly.
Thanks a lot Paul.

FTR: I was kidding about Jeffrey Fragrance.......mostly.
Really great video!
Those old bottles look really classy 🧐🧐
I'm so glad you made this video, it was much needed...A much more accesible way to catagorise fragrances
Thanks a lot Christopher. Glad you enjoyed this video.
You only need what Jeremy says to buy, basically to smell like every other everyday guy.
Great list, specially DHP and my favorite Naxos.
I think of Lapidus as a clubbing scent. Wearing it clubs everyone around you in the nose. :) Great for business meetings you don't want to last too long, too.

Great video Mr Smelly. Thanks for taking the time.
Nice review. Like watching your reviews. Would appreciate if you can list the name of fragrances in description.

Great video. Just one correction: 80s powerhouse is NOT optional. 😉

You forgot to say *"HIT* *THE* *THUMBS* *UP* *BUTTON* *FOR* *GOOD* *LUCK* *AND* *TO* *LIFT* *THE* *CURSE* *OF* *THE* *PHARAOH!"* 😉
Awesome review, my friend! Keep them coming! 👍👍
Great video, and makes it much easier for people to imagine the type of fragrance you're describing!
Great range of frags and i still can't get over this Daarej man,it's amazing
Thanks Karanja I agree about Daarej.
Nice job, MrSmelly! I like your categories for 'fumes. Let's be honest... for most men only two categories are really important and those are "fresh manly" and "sweet masculine". Everything else is quite useless in comparison.

1725 Casanova is really great! don't wear it that much but mainly cause I want it to remain at least somewhat special but such a great scent
Best intros in the business by far!

Thanks Kerino. Yes maybe that could be a category.
Aye yi yi, all this talk about Aventus
And Sauvage haha. Let’s talk about Hermes, un jardin sur le nil. That should be in everyone’s list ((:
Great review for someone just starting to take men's fragrance seriously a bunch of categories I can understand thanks
Good work mr. Smelly!! Top notch video!!!
UA-cam suggested your vids..now I'm subbed. Great vids man!
Thanks very much Alexis. I'm really glad you found my channel and really happy you subscribed!
Brilliant! Categories for the polished man about town! You are the BEST Mr. Smelly!
#smellyarmy
Nice list, where would you put aquatics? Things like aqua do goo, light blue intense and Versace man Eau fraiche?
Thank you for posting and your opinions here Dan!
Awesome video, very helpful! Simple and accessible terms.
Great work as always! I would say Aquatic clearly could go with Fresh or you could make it a stand alone. Love the Pinaud, what are your thoughts on Florida Water?
Hello Dan. Em qual categoria você colocaria o Dune Dior. I Love It. Great vídeo. Congratulations.
you are soooooo professional !!!! thank you for sharing your knowledge !!! :)
Thanks Hielo King!
no prob buddy!!! You deserve that and a whole lot more man!!!
Dan, do you have some tip when buying decant testers 5-10 ml. ? I have heard I should go for the glass decants because some of the notes might be ruined when if filled up in plastic decants ? Is there any other things I should know about ?
Great video, sir. I appreciate this type of information, being relatively new to the community. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Bernie.
Great video. Does make it easier to understand. Thanks ✌🏻
Isn't Prada L'Homme soapy too? I thought of it being in the same category as Amber Pour Homme for example.
Can I download your intro music to use as my ringtone? :D

Thanks David yes aquatics are arguably a category of their own. But perhaps they fall under my fresh masculine category? Or citrus soapy ? Maybe not!

Thanks for video but what situation do you use these categories for?
Good video Dan 😃
And bougart pour homme.. Is good??
Great video! Really nice jacket as well.
was looking for those woody/leather/tobacco fragrances that are powerful and manly.
SWEET / SPICY / FRESH / DARK / LEATHER / CHYPRE
enjoying your video BUT for list you might add fragrances names in the description to help us remember all the fragrances you talked about... a lot of great info just make it easier for us to checkout your recommendations
That makes sense to me. Thanks.
Intro mate.....so good!!!
I'm contemplating either Montblanc- Individual or Dior- Homme. Which would you choose 1st? Do they both showcase a similar sandalwood? Thank you.
Dope video bro. Still gotta check out that Ted lapidus pour homme.
Thanks Kologne. Love to see yur take on Lapidus.
Great review Dan :) I am glad I am well covered in all 6 ways :)
Great that you're covered! Thanks Sardar.
Have you ever ventured into creating your own fragrances?
Excellent video! Extremely helpful, especially for novices like myself...Now ✌🏾out!!! 😎
when i use ted lapidus the pineaple is crazy strong...
Fresh manly please!!
Nice video and great list!
hi there Mr smelly, i have to say that this video has been one of useful videos i watched for a long time, thank you
Thanks much appreciated David.
Another top quality video mate 👌🏼what part of North London are you from?
Thanks. Barnet. At the very outer edge bordering Hertfordshire.
Black Phantom for the Dark & Sweet dan?
Great list!!!
Thank you, great info
really enjoyed it. Where would you put Fahrenheit?
Thanks. Fahrenheit is hard to categorise either in my categories or traditional ones. It's in a category of its own!
Now I have to buy all the fragrances you mentioned to understand these different categories..ouch!
Have you tried Jo Malone 154? It boggles my mind that it hasn't been hyped up by anyone
I like you, proper British scents of humour (get it) and you give some masculine smells that are different from what the generic JF say and I end up smelling like a "real man" according to one of the girls at work 👌🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Great job on this video!
Great timing on this!
Please tell us what that fantastic intro music is!
Keep it up!
Where has this video been all my life
Hey do you get an old school style smell vibe from vintage DG pour homme? Though it tends to smell a bit spicier once it’s on my skin
Is Burrberry Brit a barabershop?
Very educative video!
Well done Mr!
