NOTES: the Brown Balm mascara continues to perform. I haven't had any smudging or flaking and it's easy to remove at the end of the day. Also, I am ONCE AGAIN wearing two different eyebrows in this video, it's not as bad as last time but omg what is going on???? I have been testing the About Face brow pencil and I find it very difficult to use, I think maybe it's been giving me even more trouble than I thought. A full review of that is coming soon, stay tuned & thank you for watching!!!!

I love K-beauty mascaras. My ideal mascara would hold a curl like a waterproof but be either transparent or barely colored (like water color). I adore Kanebo’s Kate lash former in clear black but they seem to have discontinued that particular one. I ordered some new ones online and am crossing my fingers they perform as well.

Bought Brown Balm myself about 5 weeks ago, maybe? It didn't give me the length I wanted so I'm not as happy with it but nice color and comes off easily, so bonus points there. However, instead of starting to dry out, it's getting sticky when I put it on, which is a weird way for mascara to age, right? Glad I tried it, not buying it again.

What I love about these videos is the emphasis is NOT new products, but whatever catches your eye and sparks your personal interest. It makes it a more interesting video than the endless reiteration of “what’s new at the drugstore”. I would love more of these!

It’s certainly the case for me. Every cheek product I have ever encountered has way too much saturation and honestly, why is it so impossible to find truly cool toned blushes and contours that are not so saturated and dark? Lipsticks can be quite sheer and less saturated and I have one in particular that is the PERFECT level of saturation and coolness and brightness and just a little goes a long way on my cheeks.

+1. I haven't tried Merit 1990 yet, but I have Lisa Eldridge's Meet me in Berlin, which I feel like is similar (?), and it's pretty much my fave blush at the mo as well as my fave lipstick. I'm in danger of actually using it up, and I'm not sure I've ever done that with a lippie before.

For what it's worth, the Revlon lipstick does not read as Y2K Paris Hilton, mainly because there isn't that much contrast between the pale lipstick and your skin. I think a key part of the frosty/glossy '00s look was the contrast between the cool-toned icy pink lip color and the heavy-handed orangey bronzer. That contrast is also what differentiates the Paris Hilton look from the concealer lips trend that came along a few years later. I think it's an interesting color on you that clearly inspires delight, and you should continue to experiment with it!

Thank you for not pushing spring product hard like other creators. I just saw a "thinking smart about the sephora sale," followed by a regrets video just 5 days, which had to be planned in advance. Obviously this is part of the content cycle, but ooof, there was so much performative "anti spending" that was quickly replaced with the need to move spring product. I presume this is a big commission season, but I don't care for my reviewers & my salespeople to be the same person! I know you get commissions as well, but I appreciate the honesty and the genuine efforts to disconnect from a cycle that can benefit you in big ways. This is when ethics really matter.

The light pink lipstick was a bit 2000s with the contour BUT I think with a different blush would be very pretty and barley there on you. Maybe with a mauve/pinky blush rather than orange leaning.
    Beautiful as always ❤️😊

The barely-there nourishing brown eyelash-tinting mascara category is my jam! Below, I’ve shared what my favorite products are in this category, and products that I’d be interested in trying out in the future. Is anyone else interested in this type of makeup? As Hannah mentioned, there are a lot of great options from Asian brands with really nuanced colors. A round-up comparison of products within this category would be amazing to see!
I’m attracted to this type of mascara because my eyes are super sensitive; many mascaras I’ve tried have caused my lash line to become extremely itchy. However, I’ve had good luck with products that are formulated to be nourishing or for sensitive skin. I also prefer a very natural look on my eyes and have blonde lashes; my ideal product would tint my lashes to make them look naturally longer and darker.
My #1 favorite in this category is the Benefit They’re Real Tinted Lash Primer in Mink Brown. It consistently gives me a natural, barely there look without any fuss.
My #2 is the Honest Beauty Honestly Healthy Serum-Infused Lash Tint in Brown. I love the skinny wand and lash-conditioning qualities, but I find that too much product is deposited on the wand. I can achieve an ideal look either by wiping some product off of the wand or combing through my lashes with a fine-toothed metal eyelash comb.
My #3 is the Loreal Paris Voluminous Brown Balm Mascara. This is my go-to when I want to look a bit more made-up. This product gives me more volume than the others and I can build it up nicely. It can sometimes get a bit clumpy on me, so I keep my eyelash comb on hand in case I need to break down any areas that got away from me.
Products I’m interested in trying in this category include: (i) 19/99 Beauty Lash Tint in Brown or Taupe, (ii) Surratt Noir Lash Tint (super curious about this, but it only comes in black... plus there’s the $50 price tag), (iii) HOJO Slim Shaping Mascara in Brown, Plum or Blue Gray (can’t figure out how to get my hands on this, but look how beautiful those colors are!), (iv) Romand Han All Fix Mascara in Long Ash or Long Hazel, (v) NEOGEN Dermalogy Extra Volumecurl Metal Maxicara in Brown (has the same intriguing metal wand as the Surratt product and comes in brown), (vi) Innisfree Skinny Microcara Zero in Brown (have loved this brand's skincare but haven't ever tried their makeup), (vii) Ettusais Eye Mascara in Burgundy Brown (they also have a shade called Lavender Black, I'd also love to try that).

Margaret, this is a great list, thank you. I came here to read the comments after I saw HLP talk about the L'Oreal Balm Mascara in Brown, to suggest to her that she might want to try the Mink lash primer from Benefit, due to what she said in the video. Glad you posted about it, along with the other products you've wanted to try.
For what it's worth, I have the Surratt Noir Lash Tint, which I don't like as much as the Benefit. The wand itself is excellent (it's like the Lash Curator Instrument from Hourglass, which I loved, I bought this mainly so I could have a second want like this for travel) but the black color isn't as good as brown for those of us who love brown mascaras.
I'm going to check out the L'Oreal brown balm mascara based on what you and HLP have said about it...I was indeed wondering how it compared with Benefit's Mink so your review on it is very helpful, thanks!

Sadly for me, who hates sweet scents on my person or in my personal bubble, so many lip products--drugstore, expensive, and niche/indie from all price points--are "Canned Frosting" (or cake, vanilla, etc.). For me, scents have ruined many an otherwise holy grail lip product.
I used to have a hypothesis that any scent was necessary to cover up the waxy smell of the ingredients in many lipsticks. I know of one company that desperately needed the optional scents it offered for a few extra dollars because the non-scented lipstick base inevitably smelled of rancid oils and waxes. But then I saw that many other mainstream and small indie companies alike--some of them the very same ones that had highly-scented lip products in other ranges--had some lipstick ranges without scent, and the waxes and oils smelled fine, truly neutral and inoffensive.
So, it *is* possible for many companies to create lipsticks without scent, and they choose not to do so. And unfortunately for me, who loathes sweet scents and would take a fake flower any day over a fake cupcake, sweet scents appear more palatable to the general population, so the latter are what companies choose. I just don't understand why they continue to force ANY scent on us.

Yes! I like the L’Oréal lippies and don’t mind the scent. The heartbreaker for me is the Maybelline lipsticks. They have great colors and perform very well but I just can’t get past that Playdough smell.

      @julias5980 Рік тому +1

@@Robin-no8cu Maybelline lip products truly reek to high heaven (they're who I was thinking of when I wrote canned frosting, but also maybe with some nail polish in there?), which sucks, because they absolutely crush it on every other front and I think they're making some of the most interesting lip products on the market right now, regardless of price and sales venue. I've learned to live with the salted caramel candle scent on their lifter glosses but I just recently chucked an ink crayon that looked fantastic on me because I felt like I was descending into a vat of vanilla flavoring with solvents added.

I feel like the ‘Sephora sale’ (and events like it) encourages content that becomes a factory treadmill rollercoaster of sales, hauls, suspiciously fast ‘holy grails’ and extensive ‘regret’ videos in such sharp turn-around that I’m honestly overwhelmed by it. Now, as a viewer, it’s absolutely my responsibility to distance myself from content that doesn’t align with my interests, and I absolutely try to do so, but you only have to open UA-cam for a second before it becomes an all-consuming barrage of consumerism. I’m so sad the L’oréal redness eraser from your other drugstore video just doesn’t seem to be available in the UK 😭 Right now I have the Nyx and it is just so much more fussy than the L’oréal seems to be.
For the Revlon lipstick… when you put the Chantecaille on I remember LOVING the effect and how it looked on you. I personally just don’t think the Revlon is as flattering. Which is a pity because we have similar colouring and an affordable dupe for the Chantecaille would have been very intriguing. 💜 Been loving all the other content but happy to see make up reviews back in the mix!

I bought the elf corrector and it was bit too light for me. I think the Exa would actually better for deeper skin tones because it’s so neutral. The elf has a tad too much white in its base. I might eventually order the Exa corrector

I enjoy the NYX one & I'm maybeeeeee half a shade darker than Hannah, but only because freckles. It's thankfully not dark at all, which surprised me? I feel like the elf or LA Colors "mint" would be way too white to wear by itself. But the NYX? I sometimes mix a hefty dab of that into primer or moisturizer & don't even use concealer some days.
The formula of Exa looks so nice, tho...

My only issue color correction is that the skin can look muddy or greyish afterwards because mixing two contrasting colors makes brown/grey (depending on purity of pigments). So then I have to use a foundation that covers the muddiness. The Dr. Jarts Cicaplast cream really made me look grey. I’ll have to try the ELF. I have used a peachy under eye corrector over the green to brighten my skin and cover the muddiness.

I just got back into backup after a 20 year hiatus and along with Hannah’s videos (she does have a make up newbie video), built my kit from watching Julia Adams (especially her foundation recs), Kelly Gooch (great drugstore) and Mandy Lea (eyeshadow). CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara, in the orange tube, comes in Brown. I’ve used the Brown Black color for maybe 15 years. It’s definitely natural looking, especially compared to what mascara has become since then. I began using the NYX green concealer after you previously reviewed it and wow, what a difference that has made! I have red skin from rosacea all over my face. I have watched hundreds of makeup videos and never got the idea to use a green concealer all over. Thank you so, so much for that. The Revlon lipstick, blotted, looks beautiful on you (no Paris vibes). The L’Oreal lipstick looks fantastic! With your hair and skin, that color and formula makes you look more yourself, and timeless. Please stock up on that one!

Also, I think if you liked this Revlon color, you might also like 103 (Caramel Glacé) from the same brand. I have never seen a lighter, grayish lipstick with a pearl finish in my life lol It looks kinda dark and peachy in the promotional photos, but it's really not. It might be a shade slightly more up your alley than the one in the video (since it's also greyish brown instead of pink).

I own the blush version of that contour palette and I think there are a few shades in there that you might actually enjoy! And you can pop out the shades and stick your faves from both palettes into one. Also living in a tropical climate, the cream formula is easier to work with. It stiffens up quite a lot when I turn up the air conditioning.

My coloring is very different from the pale/desaturated main traits of your coloring (I'm a Dark Autumn/warm/saturated olive who loves berry lipsticks lol) but it's such a pleasure to hear you talk about finishes and colors in such a unique way that I keep coming back.
Black eyeliner/mascara is also too harsh for me (even though I can work with black mascara if paired with colors of my own seasonal palette), so I always gravitate towards brown, and I had success with eyeliner, but still gotta find a good brown mascara, so this is definitely interesting!

Beautypie’s eyeshadow sticks are incredible. The shade “pink velvet” gives old gum, I regularly use it as a blush but I also use it to “contour” when I’m doing film or photography. It blends nicely, though I work in small sections to avoid a dry down debacle.
