Unearthing the 1955 Studebaker Stiletto to Start Restoration

- The longest resident of Fiberglass Farms the Studebaker Stiletto, is being unearthed and shipped out to Colorado for its restoration. Under the new ownership of our friend Steve Cowdin, this unique one-off car is heading back to its original home state. It took quite a lot of work to dig this one out of its grave and it almost killed Mike, as you'll see in the video.

For those who want to follow along for some updates from Steve Cowdin, you can check out the page he has on his website about the Studebaker Stiletto. We're hoping to have more video content in the future as well once he really starts digging into it!

Thanks for the video. I did a 1953 Austin Heal;y 100/4 that reminds me of some of your cars. Now I do a 1983 TARGA SC Porsche 911. I will continue watching and subscribe as well. I wanty to do a video on the 911 as it needs the usual engine work. The rest of the car is stainless,,,, yeah. Leaves time for the engine work.
@@TAXCOLLECTOR-mx3mg Sounds like a cool build! Thanks for following along
What a time - when these glorious concept cars could be dreamed up and fabricated in dreamers' garages, and not just in corporate studios.
That's why we love them!
Hope to see the Studi restored to one of those renderings, or combination of both. These Old beasts are Very Cool when brought back to life.👍🏁🇺🇲
Steve has a few active projects, but I know this one ranks high up there for him. Hopefully we’ll have updates in the near future on it
That tire blowout is one of the best reality show scenes ever! So real and so relatable!
The funniest part about it is that the day before we dug this out, I had asked Geoff, if with all the old cars and ancient tires, he’s dealt with if any of them have ever exploded on him, which they had not. It was quite a close call!

Really impressed with the work ethic of the young man. I had the opportunity to meet and talk to Glen at Pebble Beach Concours when we both had Mercurys entered in 2015.... a real gentleman
I ment Jeff....not Glen. 😮
Thanks a lot, it was a lot of work that day! I’m guess you’re referring to Geoff’s Leo Lyons Custom Merc?
I like the gold version the best. Can't wait to see some future video on the progress.
Same here! Hopefully Steve will have updates for us in the near future
I love Studebakers. In fact, my great-grandfathers used to work in the original factory in South Bend, Indiana. It makes me want to get one, to follow my family's footsteps.
There’s plenty out there and at pretty reasonable prices!
I had the pleasure to drive some of these cars back in the 50's After I just got my license. Always thought they were ahead of their time back then. When I bought my first ar they were basically gone from the scene in 1962.
You got it right, but the early 1960s they had all but disappeared after a meteoric rise and gracing many covers of Motor Trend, Road & Track, etc. Thanks for following along and proving your perspective and experience with these cars
Heck if a find, one of a couple thousand, and I’m glad it will be restored, even though it looks like the termites have quit holding hands.
This is actually a one-off
Studebaker is stunning.
Beautiful shape ...... 😍
Looking forward to the transformation 😊
Thanks for the kind words
So hard to look beyond that tangled mess and see anything worth saving. So glad we have folk like this.
We’re practically the SPCA for these cars, often the last stop before they’d be junked. We’ve actually fixed worse than this!
This car is beautiful and restored will be something else.i am an desendentt of clement Stuabaker
Very cool!
I love the work your doing ❤keep up the amazing work because I myself love all those cool motorama cars
Appreciate the kind words thanks for following along!
That is a beautiful car finished and I never heard of it. Wow neat find.
Thanks for seeing what we see here. It could be a stunner
It's really cool that you find these piece machines and give them a second long life.
Always happy to hear more people appreciating them too, thanks!
Good luck with it, guys.
Thanks a lot
I don't think I ever saw one of those. It must have been 1 cool car back in the day. Hope to see the finished product.
It’s a one off
Nice find, pretty car. 👍
Thanks 👍
You have to love cars and understand this vehicle is one-on-one it is beautiful. Time in life when the only limit was your imagination
You’re our kind of people 😄
I like Studebakers,I have a 61 Hawk which I drive daily. As you guys work to restore this custom I'll be following.
Great car! Awesome that you have it as a daily driver too
I have the very same tail lights. Those are from a '58 dodge pick-up or passenger car. I installed them on my 2007 Dodge Dakota, they look amazing !
That sounds pretty slick
Bravo pour c c'est belle voiture elle mérite une seconde vie avec une belle peinture bravo on attend le résultat plus de vidéo de restauration de véhicules bravo Paris France
New subscriber here from Australia and still remember the Studebaker and the push button valiant. Been awhile doe.
Thanks for subscribing! Happy to have you along for the ride
Cheers from Southern Ukraine 🖐️😉🤝 Video very, very beautiful ❤❤❤ My Super Big Like for your my dear friend ☺️👍
Thanks for following along!
Looking for a 1941 Pontiac coupe, thanks again for your time and work with the channel.😊
We definitely don't have one hanging around here, but if something comes up in our travels, I'll keep you in mind
Undoubtedly, definitely, you have unearthed a gold mine.
Holy crap Mike! You didnt move a minute too soon!
I learned a valuable lesson without getting hurt! I've got a safer way of inflating ancient tires now
Looking 👀 forward to seeing your next post
Cannot wait to see the end result. Running or not.
Subbed.
Thanks a lot!
good show😎👍
Thanks!
Nice car 👍👍
It’ll be a real beauty once Steve gets it through restoration
Now thats a great looking car
We think so too!
Cool cars
Thanks!
Now THIS is exciting! :-)
Every day is exciting for us with these amazing cars 😄
Looks so awesome with hard top on
It definitely changes the lines with the hardtop! Usually adding a top to cars like these distracts from the style lines, but this seems to be a rare exception
Very Cool!! Can't wait to see what happens next!
You and us both! Steve is coming up with a game plan as we speak out in Colorado, but he has a few other postwar fiberglass sports cars in the middle of restoration ahead of this one
That Studebaker Stiletto needs a pair of speedster humps. 👨🏻🔧
Speedster humps? Like the fairings that go behind the passenger area on the rear deck lid?
@@UndiscoveredClassicsUSA Indubitably 🧑🔧
Now THAT is a COOL Stude! Just watching this one now.....New here.
Now, am I the only one that noticed, near the beginning of the video, at about 2:50....something very quickly crawling up the tree, stopping, then running out of camera up the tree? I say spider...
Got the heebie jeebies now! 🤣
Back to the video....
Oh boy, I could have gone without knowing that lol gotta watch my back next time at the farms! Thanks for following along
Greats man, groetjes, peter bollen uit tienen Belgium!!!!!
Thanks for watching from Belgium! Glad to have you along
i have never seen this car before...crazy
It’s a cool find. And no doubt it’s rare. Definitely deserves to be restored. It’s interesting the way an Edsel is interesting. I wouldn’t call it a pretty car. There’s some major proportion problems with it. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I even looked at pictures of the car online an artist rendering. Just to be sure I wasn’t missing something in its derelict state.
That’s a big part of why we looked at what modifications could be made to really get the car looking as best as it can while preserving the original design intent of the builders
Ух ты прелесть то какая! Очень сильно хочется поработать в таком проекте.
Как только вы прикоснулись к машине, она заулыбалась и сказала " забери меня отсюда, я живая". Восстановите ее пожалуйста! Она красавица!
,,,,,wow......this guy had the heart to save them,,,....almost every car here,,,I have never seen before,maybe in a magazine,,....holy cats...land o' lakes,wi..

Glad to have you along for the ride, thanks!
Trompin' through th' poas'n ah-vrih n' raz-berreez. Could be a helluva a scratchin' rash.
Shockingly, I got out unscathed
Great!
I'm subscribing this is cool,I believe the Studebaker Stilletto is going to turn out really nice. I've always wanted to see a car builder do a Tucker Torpedo Concept with some Suttle changes. Also like the Studebaker Champion done in a restomod.
Thanks a lot!
That’s a rough car. Hope he’s can fix it because I reckon it would look awesome finished good luck
It’ll definitely be worth the work!
Just like State workers on a road crew. One guy does all the work while the others watch.
Well, Geoff had just gone through medical treatment so I was happy to do the hard labor while he healed up
Красивая машина вот было бы круто увидеть её после реставрации🙏🙏🙏👌👌👌👍👍👍✊✊✊🤝🤝🤝🔥🔥🔥
The best line on that car ... the windshield surround.
Maybe a bright orange would make it pop.
Good luck... THAT fiberglass ... looks like it's only good for a pattern
😅An unfinished rod I know of has an exhaust surround in stainless that says INSINKERATOR👍
It really could be a stunner
Looks really nice in some ways a bit crappy in others but I'll be delighted to see the end result.
It can really shine with the right, subtle modifications
The Stiletto is a gorgeous car, and one of a kind! I like the conceptual renderings of the car better than what it is now. I hope Steve redoes the existing '59 Cad taillights with more of a Stude look, as in the drawings. I wonder if Steve will install a hot Stude V8?
The potential here is great, glad others can see it too!
Cool body,batman car stijl!!!!
Bela máquina gostei passeiro tamo junto valeu
Thanks!
Passing along a tip. When you've got a car that's buried. It helps if you take along some 2x4- 2x6 scraps to put under the wheels when you jack it up. A lot less digging!
Good advice. We were a bit limited what what we had for scraps and had to make due with what was lying around out here in the sticks
I would have liked to see more of the Kaiser.
Which one, there’s like 10 here 🤪
It's a funny thing that this google laptop will not let me sign in under a youtube account that I've had for a couple of decades. I enjoy your channel so much, you have two subscriptions in one now.
That’s awesome, thanks for following along twice over!
Your neighbors must love that…
They always wave when we go by or maybe they’re shaking their fists, unsure 🤪

Stumbled onto your channel earlier today and watched a couple of your other videos. You got some crazy stuff goin on! You made me subscribe! Good luck with your channel!!
Appreciate that! Thanks a lot
I don't understand how you can still let these cars go from bad to worse
I think we may have noted it in the video, but this car was literally saved from a junkyard where it was rotting for decades. Often times, we’re getting these cars near the end of their life and help brink them back from the brink
bravo cool
Thanks!
I would like to see the restoration on this one.
Any update on this car? Looks amazing and I found nothing about it on youtube
Nothing yet, it’s safely in CO with our friend Steve and it’s on his list for planned restorations
I just found your channel and immediately subscribed. I've always been a car guy and thought that I was fairly well informed, but I looked at your homepage and I am only familiar with one car, the Woodill, and that's only because one was featured on a car TV show a few years ago. The Stiletto drawings look fantastic, especially the red version. Are you going to keep the drive train and suspension original or mordenize them? A supercharged V6 would make it into a little rocket. I'll be anxiously awaiting to see your progress. I've always been a fan of Studebaker, and am disappointed that their styling was not more popular. The '53 Starliner and the Avanti, in my opinion, are absolutely gorgeous examples of automotive styling. Stay well and good luck.
Thanks for coming along for the ride! These these cars have been obscure and almost forgotten for too long, which is our whole goal in bringing them to a wider audience and appreciation. I’m not sure what Steve’s schedule is like for the restoration here, but he has poked around a little bit since it arrived to him in Colorado. I believe he does intend to keep it Studebaker powered.
😊
Odd; in speaking with a past Studebaker club President, no material of any kind has ever been unearthed on this concept car. No one's heard of it, and the factory never photographed any such car. I have to believe people have their information mixed up on this. Word is, a customizer of the day made this, but it got little to no publicity.
This isn’t something that Studebaker put together, it was done by a father and son and is Studebaker powered
I had a 1977 Ducati DM500S modified by the factory from a parallel twin to a vertical twin with an 87 degree crank and crankcase mods to improve lubrication. It was written about extensively, and much material was uploaded to the net around 2002, and plenty of discussion was had. I can no longer find a single reference to my bike online, and I would be surprised if the current Ducati Club President knew anything about it at all. Sometimes, if its not in a hardcopy book, things get forgotten.
@@UndiscoveredClassicsUSAlooks like a Alfa grill
I would like to see the aftermath after it's done while it's being done like to see more about the Stiletto always did like Studebakers.
Steve has a couple cars ahead of this for restoration, but once he digs into it we’re hoping to have more video on the process
Nice video, but you should regulate the audio volume so that when music starts, one has not to turn the volume down
Good call, I’ve been trying to get that just right
LOOKS LIKE A FAWNED OVER CADILLAC LASALLE !!!!! INDIVIDUAL PIPE DREAM ?
Yep, this one is a one off
LOve the 1958 Dodge Coronet/Royal Tail lights
Good eye
Where is place got this? Seen car I like
The cause for excitement was the reason most of these clasics died. They just didn't appeal to many folks so they withered away till the time was right. Guys like Borrix and Gene were great in their time, and I am not sure about both of them but Gene for sure is still building cars at close to or maybe over a hundred years of age. This is not a seven day Chip Foose build, but in fact, he too is quite famous
These cars had a wide popularity and interest, gracing the covers of Road & Track, Motor Trend, etc. for just under ten years. Once production sports cars were more widely available, it was much easier to buy one than build one
I HAVE THE SAME VARY INSPIRED BY THE VIDEOS MY TWO Treasures 1985 jaguar xjs brought down the basics and a 1974 MG mgb Roadster
😎👍
😉
What’s parked next to it?
That would be a 1952-53 Glasspar G2
When I first saw It I thought of George Barris.
I can sort of see what you mean!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Subbed!
Thanks!
😚☺❣️💙❣️💙
It looks like it has a LaSalle grille and I think the windshield frame is the rear window section from a 51 Mercury
Definitely correct on the LaSalle grille, I’d have to check on the window
@@UndiscoveredClassicsUSA let me know what you think after you look at it
That's a 37 LaSalle grille on that custom Studebaker I have one for sale if that one is not reusable lmk tks Frenchee 🤙🍷😎
That looks like Florida sand hes digging up !
Good eyes, you got it
Wich one is the car just next to the stiletto?
It would be a Glasspar G2
@@UndiscoveredClassicsUSA weird car I bet not many of them around planning on restoring it too? Good channel man congrats
Thanks a lot. It belongs to a friend of ours and now it’s back with him. They made about 100 Glasspar G2 bodies and there’s about half of them accounted for these days
Of die joker van batman voor de movie"s!!!!!
Let’s see if we can start this car today!…
That would have been fun 🤪
De auto voor Movie film"s gebruiken!!!!!!!
So what exactly do you plan on saving.... What's left?
Well, there’s a number of different ways someone could tackle the restoration and it remains to be seen which route Steve is planning to take
I.had a tire go off like that like 10 minutes after dragging a 450sl up onto my trailer to move my entire shop full of vintage Mercedes. Scared the crap out of us.
Same haha
that is going to take years to restore,.. How on earth do you recreate those Fiberglass lines and whats missing if its a one off?
Same way we’ve restored almost 30 fiberglass sports cars in the last 15+ years 😉
what is that 1955 Studebaker doing today, is it fully restaured yet ? the classic cars are a nations history, how people let that rot away is to sad.
It’s in the queue for our friend Steve who is restoring several other fiberglass sports cars of the 1950s
All the wheels were free......awesome dosent happen much..
Four rolling free and one explosion, still a win
Fiber glass body, 1958 Dodge Coronet tail lights, and 1938 LaSalle front grill?
You got it!
I prefer the original front end, with the angled bracing, it's very distinctive. The horizontal renderings look too conventional.
Definitely a fan of the angled version too
Well that's a first for me, never seen a guy use a floor jack so many times on 1 car in 15 mins. And can anyone tell me how many cars passed in front of his house while unloading?
In hindsight, I probably should have gotten some good footage of the underside to give a better idea of what we were working with here
Probably 🤔 so. Had to look anyway 😕 though 😊
Did you know, that the song was starting at 27:42 is a remake of a Hungarian traditional folk song? The song's title: "A csitári hegyek alatt" (Under the mountains of Csitar)

Don't change the look, the ugliness is a major part of the character! I look forward to seeing the work in progress.
The character won’t change too much, but the improvements will be subtle and go a long way
