    Incredible! Thank you so much for such an excellent video. The smoothness and color distribution is beautiful. I've experimented with simple acrylic paints and sealants, but your technique is far superior. I'm thinking it might be time to invest in an airbrush! If you don't mind me asking, how long does it stay on around the joints, in your experience?

    • @MoonlightJewel
      @MoonlightJewel  8 років тому +133

      Ahhw I'm glad you liked it! And thank you so much!! 💕💕 Getting an airbrush really was a milestone for me, because it's so much faster to paint a surface and there is no brush which would get you the smoothness of an airbrushed surface. 💕
      And if you're careful with your doll and don't move her too harsh, it usually stays on quite well. Important for that is also, that you don't spray the color too thick. Also I've made the experience that the color on the joints stays on better on used dolls with a bit more loose joints, than brand new ones. :)

    FINALLY! Someone who has the common sense to remove the paint under the hair so that it doesn't look weird af

    • @MoonlightJewel
      @MoonlightJewel  8 років тому +12

      It's always best to have a 100% even base color. And removing the head paint is really important, so that it looks even! :)

    • @crustykrussy1197
      @crustykrussy1197 8 років тому +10

      Yes! I always thought; why dont people just remove the paint, even if its just a reroot, because it makes it look more natural

      Exactly!!

    • @dbseamz
      @dbseamz 7 років тому +2

      xXMintyPawXx Well, I can see the point of the paint...so the scalp doesn't show too much under the hair...but absolutely, remove it for a reroot, especially if you're changing the hair color.

    I honestly want to try and make a chubby doll, I think it would be really cute to just sculpt a bigger frame onto a doll base. I need to try at some point

      Neon_Dragongirl Le Fabulous but it's not really something unexpected. Irony would be like a cat chasing a dog, you don't expect it to be that way. In a skin changing tutorial you would expect something with an unnatural skin tone to be used, in this case a zombie.

    I found tweezers were hard to work with when removing hair because the hole for some doll heads is too small to maneuver the tweezers to grab. So instead I used a very tiny fine crochet hook and it pulled everything right out and I went back with the tweezers to pull out all that hair gunk. I'd say even a dental hook or a thick bent paper clip could also work well if tweezers let one down. (Beautiful work btw)

    I wanted to know if there is other alternatives for painting a doll besides airbrushing like: using a brush or sponge with acrylic paint or spray painting? And can this work with a Barbie doll? I have nothing but Barbies and I want to change the skin tone of a few of them to gray...

    • @Netlea

      A little late, but I saw some ppl here on youtube, repainting the body with pastell chalks. But it takes a lot of time

    • @hertz816
      @hertz816 7 років тому +2

      Pastels and chalk aren't the same thing, but yeah pastel would work best for what you describe. You can check out dollightful's umbreon video for an example, but she used black and it took like 8 layers to get a good saturation, so for a lighter color like grey it might take more than 10 layers.

  • @z.deutch1334
    @z.deutch1334 7 років тому +1

    For people who can't afford the fine acrylic ink & airbrush, or for those who are time poor, it's actually cheaper to buy the body on Aliexpress.com
    Just search "monster high doll body" you can get the pink and beige skin tone ones for around USD $2 to $6 each

    • @becky.rob568
      @becky.rob568 6 років тому

      That's right and it's exactly what I did, I bought two white bodies for my Pearl and Peri Serpentine doll. Unfortunately it turned out that the heads are actually grey and not white. So I have to recolor the skin of the bodies since there are no grey bodies on AliExpress (or at least I didn't find any).

    Hey, I’m learning to airbrush dolls and I was curious. How do you get the paint not to rub off the joints?
    Because I’ve gotten a really pretty even finish on my doll, but it keeps rubbing off of the joints. I heard some people say you sand them down, but I thought I would ask and see what your thoughts were.

    FINALLY!!! Someone who seems to think like me and SAND SEAMLINES before doing a custom. I see people spend SO MUCH time and material on customizing "cheap" dolls like MH, EAH a.s.o. (in comparison to BJDs they are cheap!) and making really great OOAKs out of them but the NEVER SAND these horrible lines down..... It makes EVERY DOLL, no matter how much they are worth, looking terrible cheap.... many people don't even notice.... but now I know, I'm not alone.... :-)... Btw, the primer you use in your video, does it work on resin too? After changing from MSC to Citadel, I thought I found the right one but on my current FU I have terrible problems with the sealer again... everything went fine and but while wiping away just a wrong lash, small parts spits up.... So I have to do it all again (work of two days...for the trashcan..)... I wiped all away and made a new base sealing but I feel the sealant just don't stick on the resin... Even when it dried overnight, you can wipe it away... Never had this before..

    your tutorial is great but i'll skip the compressor part, as i'm broke and wouldn't have a long use of such an expensive tool.
    i'm planning a repaint on a MH Spectra doll, because she's got the right colors of skin and hair for the character i want to transform her into.
    two days ago i've been to a craft shop to see if i could find a transparent primer, like this "mister super clear" spray that (almost) everybody use. i only found a white primer for plastic. i took it anyway because i thought i could use it for other projects (and as Spectra got transparent hands and feet that i'd rather cover). but watching at your video, and seeing the primer your used, i thought "maybe i could find it easier in a car shop!" and maybe same for the varnish...
    by the way, i still don't understand why some people insist so much to use nail polish remover without acetone... except maybe for the fumes.
    well, thanks for feeding my reflexions ;)

    How well does the paint around the joints hold up? I find with FBRs (full body repaints) even with sanding the joints still peel / scrape. Mind you, I use a sponge because I don't have an airbrush.

    does skin coloured spray paint work? i'm doing sailor chibi moon from a my little pony equestria girls fluttershy doll (they look like monster high dolls but they have horse ears at the top of their head, which i will wrap hair around the ears to make chibiusa's buns.) and i happen to have light tan spray paint. And i don't own an airbrush, do you think just spraying directly onto the doll (while protecting the hair) will do okay?

    Man..she mentions when taking the hair out it only took her 5 to 7 min. Mine took way longer. I didnt finish it in one day because my finger eventually ended up hurting (and I used really hot water as well)

    Hey luv.. Im getting a curvy barbie doll Wednesday... Now i want to make a look alike for me. To mod her i only have self hardening clay... Will that stick or would i have to glue it and will it be fragile? And to change the skin tone i only have acrylic primer.... Will that work with soft vinyl for the head?
    Sorry to dive bomb you with a crap ton of questions..... I just want my look alike to be accurate lol

      yeah, it's the glue that keep the hairs in position, that's why you boil the head before you remove the hairs.

    hey thanks for this but i want to know the color last long in the head? i dont care about the body cause i know the joins suck for this things and over time the reveal the original colour so i think im going to do it the hard way and just paint the head and use another body like eah or something so yeah the head does the paint come out ???

    • @MoonlightJewel
      @MoonlightJewel  8 років тому +1

      It is absolutely stuck to the head, especially when you sealed it during the face up. But it's better, to make a wig than a reroot, because with a reroot you have to be careful again :)

      Moonlight Jewel how hard is to reroot a repainted head? cause i dont like wigs that much i preffer to reroot. can i like paint the head seal it and wet it? cause maybe i can paint the head heat it so if soft and reroot her and finish with a face up?

      Moonlight Jewel what is another method for changing the skin color if you don't have an air brush?

    • @sakurito55
      @sakurito55 8 років тому

      CuteCupcake i have seen people using pastels and msc but only on the faces and acrylics on the body but well the airbrush is the best option cause it leaves the smooth finish, and the pastels for the head i think it should be very pigmented pastels so you dont have to add too many layers of msc.

      You can still change the colour of the skin by either: dyeing the doll using dye. There's some tutorials for that floating online so make sure to read those to get the right dye for the plastic (note: it can't dye every single plastic but it does a good job and it's great for joints.) Another way is using lots of layers of msc (mr super clear) and pastels. This can take a while tho😅 i find this method great for body blushing but a lot of work to change the skintone of an entire doll. Next is probably the cheapest and easiest and that is; just painting it by hand! U can achieve very similar results doing it by hand. The trick is to thin out ur paint and do it in thin, even strokes and to let each layer dry. There are tutorials for each of these methods online and on youtube so i highly suggest checking those out!
      I want to get an air brush too one day but i assure u many many artists have been able to achieve this same look without it so don't worry!:D
      As for which method is the best; each have their pros and cons so I'd just look into which is more accessible, cheapest, easiest for u as well as what's ur preference.
      All can chip or scratch off over time except for the dyeing technique. However, manufacturers sometimes use different plastics for different parts so sometimes not all body parts on the doll will dye. I'm kind of lazy to blab on about too much, plus i don't want to info dump u too much😂
      But if u need anything else let me know💖
      Good luck!!💓💓💓

    Do you have to sand the body before airbrushing? I have a very expensive set of dolls I'm eventually going to repaint, but I'm scared of messing it up.
