  • The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet, with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance. The Nutcracker Suite should not be mistaken for the complete ballet. The outline below represents the selection and sequence of the Nutcracker Suite culled by the composer.

I am going to be the annoying person here and mention that Tchaikovsky was actually from the Romantic Period (One of my favourites). Although this music may sound quite similar to Classical, it has a lot more emotion (created by dynamic changes etc.) which is what helps make it so interesting. So there's a bit of music history for you all, and again, sorry for getting all technical.

I love Tchaikovsky's music so much, he is my favorite composer. I am not very knowledgeble in classical music but I know he has the reputation of being one if not the best melodist and I think this is the best example: of the eight parts listed in the description, 5 of them are very recognasiable and iconic to me. If I had to choose one word to describe he music I would choose fantasy because it's the first music I listened to that gives me escapism the same way books and tv shows do. His music transport me to a fantasy. Even though in my family we never had very happy christmas, the Nutcracker Suite reminds me of memories i never had of christmas.
Also at first I didn't like this part: 18:41 but know it's my favorite part it immerses me in a different world (I especially like it in another recording)

So unjust that for several decades his music was held in contempt by those 'in the know'. It is great to learn that new and younger people are warming to him too. He would be so glad to know that his endeavours were not in vain...He was surely one of the greatest composers of music.

Tchaikovsky is the greatest of them all because of his astounding versatility. This magnificent ballet and his 2 other brilliant ballets, opera, symphonies, concertos, choral, chamber, stand alone masterworks like Capriccio Italien and one of the first great modern song writers (None But the Lonely Heart).
