I agree that I think the an Inquiry class was the flag ship of Starfleet.
LOL @ the Zheng He ramming into you. I laughed hard at that one.
Not surprised the Klingon Borg Hunter wiped the floor with the Inquiry class.

Hahaha... yes, Jonathan did host Fact or Fiction for a few years. I loved that show, and I was the best at figuring out which ones were fake. I just thought, "If I were writing fiction, would I do that?"
As for the Inquiry class... I don't know. It never fired its weapons that I can remember. But it did live up to Riker's boasts. Those rapid-fire torpedoes and pulse phasers were devastating. It's also a smaller ship, which gives it maneuverability.
Edit: I knew you'd mention it's maneuverability. The Borg killer was able to avenge his death... someone will inform him in Stov'a'kor. 😆

A flagship is simply the ship that is currently carrying a formation's flag officer - a high ranking officer with responsibility for directing all the ships in that formation and overseeing higher level strategy, freeing up the individual captains of those ships to focus on keeping said ships running at peak performance. Unless things are going exceptionally badly you're not going to have your entire navy being assigned to a single formation, which means that (in practical terms) you will never have a flagship for the entire fleet. Designating a ship as such is a symbolic honor usually bestowed on ships with particular significance to the institution.
In the case of the Federation, whatever ship is currently bearing the name Enterprise is given the title of flagship. There was never really a canonical reason for why offered until season four of Enterprise. During the episode “United" we saw the NX-01 serving as the flagship for the first joint operation between Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar; the nations that would a few years later become the founding members of the United Federation of Planets. As such it seems likely that the decision to declare whichever ship is currently carrying the name Enterprise as the flagship of the Federation is an acknowledgement that the institution likely wouldn't even exist without the accomplishments of that particular ship and her crew....great as all ways RB 👍

As you say, an actual flagship is the ship carrying the admiral, though some ships in the past have been purpose built to serve as flagships. Since the Enterprise has never really been used as a literal flagship, one wonders if the term is more colloquiaul to denote the premier ship of the line, rather than a literal flagship. But one notes not all Enterprises are flagships of the Federation. The Enterprise A was not flagship, nor was the Enterprise G. There is no regulation that stipulates that it must be. But, since the time of the Enterprise-B, Enterprises tended to be the second or third ship of the newest class of 'battleship,' and therefore is of the stature to be named flagship as the newest and most powerful ship in the fleet. Enterprise B was the first of the uprated Excelsiors, the E-C was the second ship of the Ambassador line, the E-D third of the Galaxy line, the E-E second of the Sovereigns, the E-F third of the Odyssey. But, E-G won't be flagship because she is not one of the premier ships in the fleet, but merely a cruiser.

Following that Logic the Enterprise A wasn’t the flagship with the Excelsior in service. I would say that typically the Enterprise is flagship but not always. Or possibly it’s the ceremonial flagship. For example, the U.S.S. Constitution was built in 1797 and is still technically an active vessel but going into combat in that thing would be like putting the NX 01 up against the Inquiry class.

It is likely that after the commissioning of the Enterprise G, that the flagship would transfer from the Enterprise F to another Odyssey Class vessel, or to the second or third ship of whatever the newest class of heavy starship/battleship is. There is no regulation stipulating that the current Enterprise must be flagship. It just turns out that from the Enterprise B on, the Enterprises tended to be the second or third ship of the most powerful ship class in service at the time. Enterprise B was the newest of the upgraded Excelsior Class, the C of the then newest battleship Ambassador Class, E-D of the "largest, most advanced ship the Federation has ever built (Encounter at Farpoint)" Galaxy Class, E-E the "most advanced starship in service (First Contact)" Sovereign Class, E-F Odyssey. Enterprise G breaks this tradition though by being 'merely' a medium cruiser.

The enterprise F was a thing at the time. The flagship is supposed to reminiscent of starfleets goals. The F was for diplomatic missions. The G is by far not the most powerful ship in the fleet….. but that wasn’t what was needed of the flagship at the time. She is an explorer.

There are multiple flagships throughout the series(s). Each time an admiral leads a fleet THEIR ship is designated a flagship.
Excelsior class became the standard Heavy Cruiser at the start of the 24th century, and became THE visiting Admirals ship for most of the TNG & DS9 era, the Inquiry class might become the standard cruiser for the 25th.

In Bridge Commander, it seems like torpedoes (in most cases) do all the job of destroying ships (both shields and armor), being far superior to phasers, which are just Star Trek attributes and no more. And that's a little sad because I always feel stupid firing phasers when I could have just thrown a bunch of quantums at the enemy, and they're gone.
Star Trek: Legacy has it figured out a little better, I think. Phasers there are more effective against shields, bc I suppose they are directed streams of energy, rather than just explosions sending energy in all directions, like torpedoes. Torpedoes do little to shields, but when those are gone, they are great at doing hull damage (they don't just burn it like phasers, they tear it apart). A neat detail giving meaning to both armament types.

  • @poil8351

Also flagships could be traditionally whatever ship a flag officer wanted to fly his flag in and in some navies that could be any ship and some admirals were kind of odd in their choices of flagship. There have been cases where admirals have used faster smaller ships as flagships.

Not sure about copy pasting the Zheng He but it certainly copy pasted destroying your Negh'Var twice. Would be nice to see her on screen again. Can see why Riker favoured her. The Klingon Borg Hunter seems to live up to it's name.

I'm not a fan of the Inquiry class aesthetically. That deflector grill just looks so bad.
I know what Riker said about the Inquiry being a mean ship but it doesn't strike me as a 2390s Galaxy or Sovereign or Excelsior. It seems more like an Intrepid sort of tonnage ship. It's fast, agile, well armed.
