  • Manitoulin Island is an incredibly fascinating place! It is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world, It has over 100 lakes on the island, it has the largest lake on an island in the world, it also has the largest island in a lake which is on an island in the world!!
It is also very rich in native aboriginal heritage, as well as beautiful countryside, beaches, hiking trails, and waterfalls.
I would urge you to make a point of travelling to Manitoulin Island and checking out everything it has to offer, if you get the chance.
There are two ways to get to the island:
1 - Exit off of the #17 Highway (Trans-Canada) near the town on McKerrow, and take the #6 Highway south through the town of Espanola, and arrive on the island at the town of Little Current.

2 - Take the ferry from the town of Tobermory on the north tip of the Bruce Peninsula, and arrive on the island at the small town of South Baymouth.

Some day I think it would be fun to cut across to Southern Ontario from the west over Manitoulin Island via the ferry. I confess some of my interest in the island came from an Arrogant Worms song they did about a taxidermy museum located there. I don't think the place exists anymore but I still want to explore the island. I have scoured the island on Google Maps but didn't know about the lakes or islands within-islands.

I would encourage you to do it. The island is very picturesque, there is so much history, and I think the children would really enjoy the ferry, it's a lot of fun!
