Furious MP demands apology from James Cleverly for calling his constituency a "sh*thole"

- Labour MP Alex Cunningham was asking the Prime Minister about poverty levels in his constituency during PMQs when a microphone picked up what sounded like an MP stating that the constituency was a shithole.
It was later confirmed that the voice belonged to the Home Secretary, James Cleverly.
Mr Cunningham raised a point of order after the Autumn Statement to find out how he should proceed.

Well stated! That's exactly what they think of the people who they work for.
Why are people constantly shocked to find out the Tories think poor folk are scum?
I'm not shocked about that. I'm shocked that there are poor people who vote for them when they couldn't give a rat's arse about them and see them as useful idiots
Such language from any MP not 4/5 years ago would be calls for an immediate resignation. In fact they themselves might have even resigned immediately. Standard of politicians has gone to the dogs.
And that would be if they used the words in a public place when they didn't think they were being filmed. It's unbelievably that an MP of ANY party can describe another MPs consituency as a shithole in the house itself and simply get away with it.
Can you remember if you are that age, anyone doing that in thatchers government, and getting away with it
Power doesn't corrupt, POWER REVEALS... it is revealing evil every day.
Even the dogs have standards. The tories are just utter scum.

My wife and I watched Cleverly going into Number 10 this morning on the sky news clip. Anyone who also saw this would have also noticed the Cleverly paused when he knew that the cameras were on him. He came across as a pompas twat who was full of his own importance. His comments confirmed our thoughts
Stop voting tories then

Not me.
Nice to see that the Speaker is still as useless as a chocolate teapot.
As The M.P. said the audio had been checked numerous times and "Not so clever" Cleverly was apparently clearly heard to say "because it is a shithole."
Anyone worth their salt would, when this sort of allegation is made, even if they did not actually hear it themselves, would surely contact the relevant body to get a full audio of the incident so they can check for themselves.
Oops I forgot the Speaker's job is to first and foremost protect the Tory party and its ministers no matter what the cost!😡🤬
Fully agree, both the speaker and deputy speaker are useless as fuck
Yes, it's not really difficult for her to listen to a recording of what he said, but you called it she has to protect the Tories, or whatever any other toff says.

So this is his attitude to children in poverty? An apology doesn't work here. Resign!!

As usual the Speaker defends the indefensible. She's saying that Cleverly surely didn't use that word. Based on what? Nothing!
She’s not the speaker. She’s the deputy speaker and a tory.
How can she prove it was Cleverly in that moment?
@@gotMylkyHaving had prior notice of the question, as she stated, the dp could have examined the recording herself.
@emmanuelacharithayamim3627 The recording is hardly clear that it was Cleverly.
@@emmanuelacharithayamim3627 I have no idea what the speaker/deputy does (task wise during a PMQ day) but I'm sure that they wouldn't have had time to examine the recording and know 100% who it was in the time between PMQ's and this debate. I have no doubt that Cleverly said it but claims like this need to be checked thoroughly.

The lady speaker has called him a liar, saying that those wasn't the words used. How does she know if they couldn't be heard in a noisy chamber? It's sickening how the tory government covers up for one another.

She could offer to have a look at the video and audio recordings and assure that if these allegations are supported by this evidence action will be taken, but instead went for the weak, spineless option.
Takes no meaningful action-it's ridiculous?
Having been pre warned that this point was going to be raised she should have already either checked herself or had some check it for her. Instead choosing to do nothing is irresponsible and gives the ok for Not So and others to continue with more of the same in future.

To who
I heard it. Everyone heard it. Knee jerk reaction from a Tory; lie
Such a farce, if the Speaker didn't see or hear something, it didn't happen. MPs should be forced to return to parliament, apologize or correct the record when they say things like this or lie, under threat of suspension from parliament.
If it's the case that football matches and other televised sporting events are held to a higher standard when it comes to confirmation of something than when compared to our law makers, that would be pretty worrying
Especially as it's probably one of the most heavily microphoned and camera covered rooms in the country.
Obviously the cameras and sound systems are switched off when they are describing another mp's constituency using bad language and when there's drugs about.
They can’t punish people if they didn’t hear it there has to be proof or they heard it
@@gothicgolem2947😠 The words were recorded and the audio checked several times. What more do you want as verifiable evidence of what Mr Cleverly said?
Yes the Speaker chose the wrong course of action. This wasn't someone calling someone else a liar under his breath - which Speakers from time immemorial have chosen 'not to have heard', this was an insult to a whole town / constituency and there are 30 or 40 thousand people he needs to come an apologise to individually. I think the real issue is that there is no robust means of holding politicians accountable. An election every five years is useless if you cannot challenge under performing MPs or sack those who fall below the required standard within that time frame. We either need something of a revolution or better, serious political reform starting with removing the system that allows a government most people voted against from holding an unassailable majority in the House of Commons.
By the Tories
My only words are Angela Rayner terminoligy for the Tories is 100% correct,
Yes tories are scum
Remember the outrage from the Tories about that, and she wasn't even in parliament when she said it.
I believe her description is remarkably polite.
"That is why no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party that inflicted those bitter experiences on me. So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin. They condemned millions of first-class people to semi-starvation."
Nye Bevan, architect of the NHS, speaking in 1948.
It's well worth looking up what else he had to say.
He was a visionary. He knew exactly what the Tories would try to do.
He must have been looking in the mirror when he made the sh*thole comments.I only hope the people of Stockton and the Northeast remember what the government think of them and their towns
Considering the Brexit Party stopped the Tories winning Stockton North in 2019 it is not a very cleverly thing for him to say.
Stockton's just like many towns in the north decades of North/south divide have taken it's toll . If your north of Watford g ap you don't matter
Oh well, if he didn’t hear it it can’t have happened then.
These clowns are something else 👽
I think it’s a disgrace and insult to the ‘honorable’ that 90% of the house dare to use it. We are an embarrassment on the political stage.
No accountability for any of these scoundrels because they know they can get away with anything.

@@colinstephenson5386 You are correct Hoyle is a Labour MP, the issue I have is that the deputy speaker who is in charge of this part basically said "The speaker didn't hear the remark at the time, so regardless of the fact you have said you've checked the audio, it didnt happen" which is the total arse about face way of dealing with this situation. If the audio has been checked, then find Lindsay Hoyle in his chambers, make him listen to it and then come out at the next meeting and demand that the home secretary apologises.
