    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Last week, developers over at Santa Monica Studio revealed in an interview podcast that an original story draft for God of War Ragnarok had Kratos die in the first Thor fight of the game. The death of Kratos would be followed by having you play as Atreus, and rescue him from hell 20 years into the future. While Kratos' death would have therefore not been final, many people have gone on to compare the original story concept to how The Last of Us Part II and its story turned out. However, I believe the comparisons aren't necessarily jusitifed. In this video, I discuss my thoughts on the early story idea as well as compare it to The Last of Us Part II, reflecting on how both games did and would have tackled an event like this in their narratives. Thanks for watching!

I agree with you. I don't have a problem with Joel's death but how it was executed. The new characters feel boring and one-dimentional. You can literally tell that they didn't know what to do with them half of the time and had to think of ways of getting rid of them to be able to continue the Ellie/Abby storyline (Dina too sick to join Ellie & staying at the hotel, Jesse & Abby's friends getting killed off, etc). The thing I hate about Tlou2 so much is the terrible writing.

  • @stepanermilov3210

Oh I get your point to an extent about the last of us part 2. But they hang up is they actually didn’t show Joel that much in trailers. After the first teaser everyone was wondering if he came as a vision or memory when Ellie was sitting with a guitar in an abandoned house. Then they focused on the gameplay where nothing was said about Joel. So you can only assume they did all of their marketing choices to sell the product and mislead people. With Druckmann’s antics I’d lean this easy as well, but ultimately judging it as a story on it’s own, it’s decent. There were other ways to tell that everyone is violent and it’s not gonna lead to good outcome, but they decided it was more of a statement to show it like they did. My problem is how would they continue with pet 3. I just don’t see a way to organically continue with Ellie as main character or Ellie/Abby pair when they are broken mentally and physically. How many years would have to pass until they can go forward on a mission of finding fireflies? I guess there is a easy to pair them together and finally get a vaccine, but is that an interesting concept? I doubt it is.

One definitely misleading thing was they replaced Jesse with Joel in one of the story trailers where he says something like, “you thought I’d let you do this on your own?” That being said, I don’t necessarily mind killing off Joel if the story is done well, but like Robin, I just didn’t really care for any of the characters, except maybe Abby a little by the end

The fact that GoW Ragnarok sold 11M copies in only 3 months while TLOUP2 needed 2 years to hit 10M copies proves that Naughty dog lost a lot of sales and that they should've made a typical sequel instead of following a direction that nobody predicted.
Joel's death was inevitable since he belongs to a brutal unforgiving world. But to kill him off at the very beginning of the sequel and to force the player to empathize with his killer was just too harsh to accept...
It's also sad that a fantastic character like Joel was only meant to be the protagonist of a single game while Kratos, Nathan Drake and others were the protagonists of many games.

Joel dying was something that was bound to happen imo, my issue is the lame plot that they used to make him die.
The daughter of that random doctor from the first game wants revenge, seriously this was the best that they could come up with? Joel forsook humanity with his choice in TLoU 1 so instead of us getting a cool plot about everyone hunting Joel down because he took the cure away from humanity we instead get a "you killed my dad" plot.

That would have made the game very Kino, instead they missed that opportunity. Maybe they can adapt that alternative timeline in a graphic novel or something.
On the episode 3 thing, it’s objectively very good television. That episode is well made and everything but the problem is that it doesn’t serve the plot. Nothing that happens around Bill and Frank influences Joel and Ellie it’s pretty shallow. The show seems to do this episode 3 onwards. Introduce new characters and background that never appeared in the game that ultimately end up not meaning anything like the girl baddie from episode 4 and 5. The game was wise to cut the fat, the show seems to add fat.

They’re both kind of different though. The gameplay between characters in TLOU is practically similar, whereas God of War, unless they pulled having Atreus wielding both the axe and the blades, it still wouldn’t feel natural in a way.
Regarding the topic about game companies being “upfront” about their narratives with the audience, I kind of disagree. There are games and stories that pull twists and turns without solid foundation (*ahem* Rise of Skywalker) but TLOU? The hints are there to lead you into Part II’s narrative. And I would dare say that the TV show is even making these more apparent. The Part II leak was one of the worst things that happened to that game and it still baffles me to this day why would someone want to get spoiled by a leak for one of the most anticipated sequels of all time.

About the whole warning the audience thing. I don't mind developers / creatives being a bit more dishonest about what's in store if it serves a purpose. I think knowing Joel was gonna die would have changed the impact. I feel like, we're absolutely supposed to be in Ellie's shoes here. He got his leg shot off. But it's Joel, surely he will survive right? But no. He dies, and it's a shock. And i like that. That's a bit different from what they do in the show with Bill and Frank. The change i don't mind. Having more of them isn't even bad. The story on it's own isn' bad. What's bad is how it literally doesn't matter for the story. You can cut out those 60 min of the episode and the story would lose nothing. Sure, the audience would be left without that part of the story. But that part of the story doesn't matter for the story. Cut it, leave the lazy written letter and you still have the exact same impact on Joel and Ellie's development. Their journey isn't effeted at all. ''Yes but it's the contrast to the Quarantine Zone''. So is Jackson... That Town is a safe and beautiful community were people are Happy. That's your contrast.
''Yes but the themes of Love and what it can do to you etc''. That's what The Last of Us is about. How far Joel eventualy is willing to go for his adopted daughter. And then there's Sam and Henry as well. You got those themes in there. You could do the Bill and Frank storyline, but have it actually feed into the story with it being why Bill ends up helping them. ''Someone once showed me a reason to keep on living. I lived, now let me help you so you can live for her Joel''. Unspoken, but communicated rough flashbacks and that look we give eachother. The change isn't just unexpected. It's like sarting off Avengers Endgame with Howard the duck out drinking for an hour before ''Ooops, here's what you actually came for''. Fat Thor in Avengers Endgame was actually fun. Hulk no actually being in Infinity War was stupid. That didn't have to be a lie. Joel actually dying at the start of Part 2 works because it makes you feel more like what Ellie is feeling. You're angry. It works. In the show, you're expecting Joel and Ellie meets Bill. But instead you get a disconected romance story that leaves Zero impact on the main story. It's dumb. Neil also said early on that in Part 2 you play as Ellie. So we knew it was more about her this time. So Joel's death was a shock... But we never believed we were gonna play as Joel for the full 25 hours. Hell, i didn't even think we were gonna play as him at all. Lying isn't good. Making your fans think they're getting something entierly different is a dick move. Saying ''Oh Hulk is here'' only ti give is NO Hulk at all is bad. But for the sake of lying just to lie.... That's dumb. They could have used shots of Hulk from the start of the movie. There's a reason i've stopped watching most trailers. Because i don't want to form too many ideas of what to expect. I want to go in blind. Trailers either spoil too much or give the wrong idea of what you're about to see. So i'm glad Neil didn't say Joel dies. That would have pissed me off. That story came out at a time in my life where i was well and trouly angry at life. Angry and people who ruined my life. I found a level of peace with the story because it thematicly matched up with how i fealt at the time. And i'm glad i got to experience that blindly. I need it there and then. So i still stand by it being an Amazing game. Most writing flaws people have pointed out to me i can easily argue down. Some have made some decent points. But most points is a matter of taste. And not objectivly bad writing.
As for Kratos dying. I'm glad they did what they did. But a version of the original concept would have been cool. But i'm glad Kratos doesn't have to lose to Thor. In the end of the day, Kratos isn't having a hard time because he's weaker than Thor. He has a hard time because he doesn't want to be a God killer anymore. It's brought him no joy. Only pain. So he spares Thor rather than lose to Thor. But say if Thor and Odin together killed Kratos, that would be Cool.

It's merely the event that starts the actual game and tells you it's gonna be a different kinda game entirely. You still wouldn't have any idea about the 20+ hours that followed or that you'd get to play as Abby etc. The way I see it, that way you're actually just being honest to your audience with what you wanted the next game to be. But Naughty Dog may have figured it's not what their audience had wanted, it wouldn't generate the same sales, and thus they may have as well chosen to hide it for economic reasons. I just find that a case of not being willing to take responsibility for your choices.

Still ofc was a good game just like tlou2.
As for tlou2 the only thing i didn't like about the marketing was that one trailer where they showed Joel in a scene where there ultimately was a different character. Other than that im all for keeping stuff hidden just don't show things that aren't in the game. Im so tired of the tlou2 convo as a whole and cant relate to eather side of the extreme of opinions.

I agree with you Robin. I think the base story and bones of TLOU2 are great. It's the execution that's flawed. Having to play as the killer of one of the most beloved characters is a great idea in theory, but Abby is relatively unlikeable, not relatable, and her story does not coincide with Ellie's in Seattle until the very end of her section. She treats her friends throughout the story very poorly, and turns on her own people and kills them without thought at the end for 2 strangers she just met. Had she shown remorse for her actions against Joel and had her story intertwine more with Ellie's, I think the game would have been much more impactful. I wanted to like the game and take it seriously, I just couldn't.

We already knew from the trailers that Ellie would suffer a violent and traumatic event that serves as the catalyst for the story. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that there are only a few things that could occur that would affect Ellie like that, and the most obvious thing would be Joel dying. Some people even disregarded it as the least likely to happen based on the fact that it would be “too obvious” 😂

Joel's death was done perfectly fine considering the story they wanted to tell. The whole point is that Joel's death is brutal and undeserved in the eyes of Ellie and players alike - If the game doesn't get that across then players won't understand why Ellie seeks justice.
Understanding how Ellie feels after that scene means that we also understand how Abby felt - Whether players are able to recognise and accept that is a whole different challenge that the game presents to you. We can't rightfully chastise Abby for what she did, when we spend the entire first half of the game happily trying to do the same thing, when we play as Ellie.
