I bought the base model @ $499 and I'm just using a so-so wifi hotspot from work to basic tasks. So far, the mini has exceeded my expectations.
Same except I got the 512GB version and couldn't be happier with the performance/price.
Longtime Mac/Apple user (nearly 30 years), got an M2 Mac Mini with 16GB unified memory + 512GB SSD; then got Satechi hub (without the storage option), Not doing more than 1080p video editing (DaVinci Resolve & iMovie), but may have photo editing & audio editing going at same time so 16GB unified memory keeps things rolling smoothly; also have a 4TB USB-A/3.x HDD which is fast enough for 1080p video edit, that holds all my documents & projects; using a separate 2TB USB-A/3.x HDD for iMove & Photos Libraries. Running 2 displays. So far so good. Thinking about using my older 2018 Mac Mini as a Media/File server...

I use it for the last 2 weeks now, with double monitors and ipad connected to it. I can say it is awesome, i dont use MacBook pro anymore and I dont feel any difference
I was between this and ad MBP 14" but this won me over. I would be saving a massive 1250 euro for the same specs! For portability I can live with my 2019 MBP, especially that I do the heavy work only at home using the extra monitor, keyboard, and mouse. I'm buying an M2 Pro Mac Mini soon

i need your advice. my 2018 MacBook Pro laptop has 16 GB memory it works fine on start, but after a couple hours of being active, I'll have to keep refreshing the webpage to keep it active (I'm a trader). checked the RAM, checked the active monitor and the used memory always stays around 12.50. making the fan scream. however, i have a 4k extended monitor connected to it. I'm thinking of switching to Mac Mini or Mac Studio. but considering the prices, i don't want to spend like 4k on the studio and find out I don't really need it. hence I'm getting 2 more monitors, making it 3. So I can code on one and trade on 2 monitors. should I go for a 32 GB or 64 GB memory Mac? I don't want a situation where I'll have to upgrade again after some months?

If you are a trader, 32GB of memory is more than sufficient. My recommendation is to save the 460 euros of the additional 32GB, (that is in Europe). I do so much video editing for UA-cam and TikTok - tasks that demand more memory than online trading; yet the Mac Mini I bought has only 32GB.
I've been a windows user for years, but I'm tired of the updates and performances on Windows. I have thought about trying the Mini Mac, all I do is edit 1080 and or 4k videos (film) I don't play games and I never download anything on my computer that I don't need. My question is which would be better for me, I'm getting the 16gb w/ 512 memory, the M1 or the M2 ? Thank you and great info on your video.
Another great video, thanks! I too used to think the Apple ecosystem was highly overrated. But a about 5 years ago I started to make the transition to Apple land when the space gray 2018 Intel mini came out, more out of curiosity than anything else. The release of the M1 Macs sealed the deal.
Transitioning to Apple’s custom silicon was a big move.

@@eniolamelody6415 What you're describing sounds more like a heat throttling problem than a RAM problem. I would check out the base M2 Studio Max ($2k) or even a refurbished M1 Studio Max (but not the Ultra). Both come with 32GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage, and it sounds like they might fit your use case. This is just a suggestion, I encourage you to do some research.
I'm going to upgrade from my base M1 to the M2 Pro sometime before summer. I was thinking about a studio, but I can literally get myself a base iPad Pro in addition to my Mac for the same price.
I have a MacBook Air M1 and an iPad Pro 10.5, and for the life of me I cannot get the iPad pro 10.5 to use Sidecar for more than a few seconds wirelessly with the MacBook Air M1. I have to connect them with a lightning cable. Any suggestions?

The soldered on SSD will eventually die taking the whole system with it. If you want your system to last, stick to the higher capacity options and only keep the OS and programs on the internal storage. Run your projects on an external drive.
Or just buy a New one after 5-8 years when it dies...
Yeah it might die in like 8-10 years and by that point the computer will be obsolete anyways, Also it's not a guarantee the SSD will ever even fail most people don't do a crazy amount of reading/writing in daily use

I've had nothing but problems with the m2 mini base model and it's USB support. Hubs just don't play nice and I am assuming you need a specific one which plays ball with apples I/O infrastructure and drivers. Incredibly frustrating and it's made me plan a move back to Windows since it's only going to be used for music.

Do have iphone/ipad? If so the integration and synching of all key systems makes it a no brainer decision e.g if you use calendar reminders notes files apps that use icloud etc

if you are a pro /need for work never go base. certain devices the base models have sub standard storage -will affect speed. doesnt have to be pro i.m.o just up the ram/storage

At first I wanted to buy a Mac Mini M2 but I instead chose the GMKtec NucBox K6 for 554€ with the Ryzen 7 7840HS 8C/16T 5.1GHz(which is a lot of faster than the base M2), 64GB of DDR5 RAM, 1TB of SSD, I installed Fedora Linux 40 with the Sway WM to have an Unix-like experience, I don't regret my purchase ! :)
8GBs of RAM on the M2 Mac Mini (regular) is below average. If you are in the digital arts (video/photo editor, front-end web developer, or DJ), increasing the RAM & SSD to 16GB/512GB configuration makes it worth it. It costs around $999 without a student discount. $899 with the student discount.
As a mac mini user, this is all good, except for most of the reasons..are reasons to get any mac, not the mac mini specifically. Would have been nice to have a review that was specific to the mac mini.

Yes. LOGI MX Keys for Mac, LOGI MX720 mouse and what ever display you want, although a 4k one is preferred.
If i only want to consume content and drive 2 monitors (1 27inch 4k monitor and another 32inch ultrawide 2k monitor) majority would be playing 4k content from youtube and other streaming services as well as have a dozen worth of tabs in chrome open. Will the M2 mac mini base model still work? I still have my 2015 mbp 15 and the fan noise is driving me nuts lately, i’ve had it for 8 years on clamshell mode hence i don’t really see me buying another laptop anytime soon. Thank you for the kind words. Technically - yes - you can get by with the base model. My only thought is this - you clearly keep your devices for as long as possible and get the most value out of them. If you see yourself doing that again, it may be worth considering going with 16GB of unified memory. Also, check how much storage you're using up on your MBP and make sure that you have enough for anything you transfer (if you plan on doing that) - plus what you may need in the future. If it's really only viewing content online - 256GB will definitely work. Hope that helps.
Got the base M2 and put the OS on a external SSD. Now it’s running a 1TB drive and no worries about the lack of ram trashing the internal drive.

Thanks for the video. Very informative! I have a question for you or any of your viewers. I bought the Mac Mini M2 and I just received the monitor, an LG 27UN850-W 4K. When I use the provided USB-C to USB-C cable I get no signal on the screen. When I use the provided HDMI to HDMI cable it works perfectly. Is this a settings issue, compatibility issue or perhaps something wrong with the monitor? Thanks and subscribed!

Like performance, benchmark, davinci export etc.
No. The storage is upgradeable. And all you need to upgrade is the soldering skills, SSD chips and equipment. And I trully think that the only right way to get M2 mac mini with the bigger SSD is by paying the good PC engineer to solder on a couple new BGA chips on the 256GB model. Or by buying/renting the equipment and doing it yourself. Much better and much smarter then paying a freaking 800$ for 4 SSD BGA chips to Apple.
Bluetooth was a nightmare for my M1 Mac Mini. Have they fixed it?
I haven't had issues (but I never had an issue with the M1). For the logitec MX Master 3S - I use the unifying receiver. Hope that helps.
My M2 Pro Mac Mini has Bluetooth issues. All good with Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad until I connect either of my two Bluetooth headphone sets. Then I get cursor skipping and keyborard freezing.
Horrible external monitor support, could use a display port, spotty Wi-Fi, but seems to be fixed in the new updates.

I bought the base model for my business. I’m using it for adobe illustrator, and light burn. I also bought a iPad Pro because I said if my Mac mini can’t handle illustrator I can use the iPad Pro for illustrator and transfer the pdf to the Mac mini to print to light burn. The Mac mini has more than exceeded my expectations this thing is powerful. So now I just use the iPad to draw my vectors or improve some customers logo. I would say this also always try to get Ram for longevity but if you are looking to save don’t worry this Mac can handle it
Recently I am seeing a price cut on Mac Studio coming to $1599 and M2 Pro to $1099. I am now a little confused.. can you suggest the best one to take. as I see the difference is around $500
I have 16/256 M2 and have continuous issues with wifi. There is heaps of complaints about poor internet connectivity wifi and the M2, wish I’d seen them before I bought. Don’t get me wrong it is super fast booting and loading apps, but the wifi is flaky.
I wonder is this a known universal problem?
If you feel the urge to upgrade to a 16GB memory model, think if you really need it. My MBAir M1 has always been plenty fast for daily use and some Adobe Photoshop or Video editing.
Also, I just picked up a refurbished base Mac Mini M2 from Apple online for $500 with a one year warranty. A bargain compared to the older M1.

@@eniolamelody6415 You’re a trader, and the rule of spend what you can afford applies here. If you can afford more ram with the base M2 chip then go for it. Considering you trade, you don’t want the lack of ram causing your drive to die.

Shared memory is not a feature, it is just a way for company to make a computer without a powerful dedicated GPU at a lower cost! shared memory usually mean lower performance and with already dismal 8GB memory, a chuck of that will be used on video depend on resolution/amount of detail etc etc!

Don't upgrade the SSD, just go straight to the external a full 1TB cost £66 compared to 512gb more for £200
the ssd increases the speed. You don’t get that with an external which is probably why it’s 200

What is your experience with using non-native monitor resolutions? My research shows that if your monitor is not multiples of the Mini's native resolution, then it has to scale and bogs down the GPU. For instance, many 4K monitors are not at native resolution.

I have the Mac mini M2 Pro, but I barely use it. Since I'm doing more things with Stable Diffusion I prefer to do it on my Windows Laptop with Nvidia graphics card. The Mac mini is too slow for that
The Mac Studio is probably a better option. Although you already have a PC that works so I would just keep using that.
@@TechGearTalk I think it would not be a better option, no Mac because the AI models are optimized for the GPU especially from Nvidia
5:20 - Sidecar has ALWAYS given me problems. I've tried 3 completely different (expensive) routers at my house, the network at my office, three different iPad Pros, 4 different MacBooks/Minis. I've tried WiFi and USB C cables. The sidecar screen *always* freezes somewhere between 10 minutes and a few hours. The only fix is to disable sidecar and reenable it again. What the heck are you doing to make it so great and (I would assume) reliable?!
Oh wow - that's no good. I use an Orbi mesh system (not sure if that helps) but I haven't had issues as long as I had a good connection. I really appreciate you sharing your experience.

i have all apple products so honestly the mac mini was like the final upgrade to have a complete ecosystem

i financed it with my apple card lol so just pay $100 a month for 12mo. i bought it back on jan of 2023

Since I was switching from my old desktop.
I was using this Amazon wireless mouse with LED lights lol 😆 so that’s what I use for my mouse still.
And my keyboard. Same thing. It’s just a wireless Bluetooth keyboard. Does have led backlit keyboard and even a slot opening so I can place my phone standing up
The only non Apple products on my setup 😅 but it definitely works well for me.

I got a laptop from Samsung (Galaxy Book2 pro 360). It has been to service once for a display issue, and yesterday it passed away. All these in six months. I love Windows (productivity) but I also appreciate OSX. I’ll go for Mac Mini if it convinces me :)

It seemed great for a few hours, then had to be reconnected to wifi every 30 seconds. So…….useless. I spent hours looking at my own router for issues then discovered 24 pages of complaints on the Apple site about hundreds of people having the same issue. Massive fault with these machines. Mine is an M2 Pro. Not sure what to do now but it’s useless to me without wifi! I can’t believe it. Saved for ages to buy this.
Yeah I opted for the higher memory options and stuck with 256GB to keep costs down. I have external thunderbolt SSDs which fills the gap. In video editing you want external drives anyhow. One drawback was the fact it would only output ypbpr to some monitors so I had to use an external adapter.
Did pretty much the same. I do sweat about the apps but anything else can be done off of an external SSD. Even some programs like DaVinci Resolve can be configured to make proxies or other temporary files in different directories. Also, yes the 256GB is slower than the M1 offering but it's barely noticeable if you're not running a benchmark or looking side-by-side comparisons.
Also, the 16GB RAM and up are saving your system from having to use swaps, trashing the read/write cycles of your SSD. So, if you're stuck between the choice of either choosing higher unified memory or higher storage capacity, absolutely go for memory.

@@ghumakkardsala I do editing in Premier Pro with no issues on an M2 Mac Mini with 256GB and 16GB of RAM. The RAM is not debatable. I use external Thunderbolt SSD drives for project storage and scratch volumes. Definitely up to the task

Been a windows user for 20 years , Bought Mac mini m2 a week ago to give it a try as I don't game on pc anymore after switching to Xbox series x + ps5 and only use Pc for work and entertainment . I don't noticed anything superior yet that was not available on windows. Overall a 6 out of 10. Probably a heaven only for UA-camrs
For over 25 years been a MS Dos user., Now switched to chromecast., feels soo much better these days.
IT IS DISGRACEFULLY BAD with memory management....CONSTANT bluetooth disconnections. NOT ONE youtuber has mentioned ANY OF THESE ISSUES!

Check youtube for Mac Mini flickering display... you'll find dozens of videos with a variety of external display issues including the flicker and two displays at once not working properly. I just bought an M2 mini and out of the box my Samsung 32 inch smart Tv flickered and artifacted. I switched from HDMI to thunderbolt and still problems... I fiddled with TV settings and it finally stopped. I was using the same Tv with my 2015 MacBook Air with no issues. Though it works fine now... the experience with this and my last MacBook with the defective butterfly keyboard is testing my loyalty. My Macs from 1998 to 20010 ran like a champ for many years. I question the QA in recents products.

Don’t forget that usb sucks for drives as there are a lot of transmission errors all the time which can lead eventually to data corruption .. but the storage you need or better buy a real computer

I have not had any issues with mine. I do use a unifying receiver with my Logitech mouse.

The base model m2 Mac mini is a great deal. It becomes a progressively worse deal as you increase the ram, processor, and storage. Definitely buy it with a student discount.
If you're increasing RAM, processor and storage on a Mac Mini you should just buy a Mac Studio at that point.

He refused my request as he dosent need it, rather I'm not giving him the current offer of a £100 Apple Giftcard, which I could use towards a new iPhone.

Yes. All Apple custom silicon macs/MacBooks are not upgradable. That point was not a differentiation between macs - but between upgradable and “unupgradable” desktop. Hope that clears it up.
btw I went from and Intel 2018 macmini base model to an M2 mini base model 5 months ago...I miss some ports, and haven't noticed massive changes in performances....honestly.@@TechGearTalk
