Grid looks like he’s really in his element. I like the way he discusses what he’s going to do. Makes the audience feel like they are right there. Though I have to say I have never seen a welding DIY video with such a wide audience appeal.
Grid had to have been a teacher. He is too natural with an audience and thorough with his explanations to not be an educator. I don't know how i ended up at this channel but I'm enjoying the educational content. Good job guys.
Like this type of video. Not just discussing the process but pulling back the curtain and letting us see some of the process. Some good craftsman on board. Grid seems to be the salt of the earth type. Looking forward to future videos and updates.
Listening to enthusiastic people that love what they are doing and who also know their stuff really is some kind of therapy and is really calming in crazy times like these. Never expected I could watch a 16 minutes video about welding without being bored :)
i love this project its a life dedication i just hope the proccess starts moving faster than it has in the past 10 years lolcant wait to see it done and would love to see in person
As said by others, very nice explanation of welding! I certainly appreciate discussion of safety/protection equipment. Too many channels take pride in shortcuts and “I don’t need to be safe”!
Grid's fun. I appreciate this video a lot. Very easy to follow, very informative, and a good shot at the work being done. Besides the jargon. I feel bad for Shane, though. Thanks for this one. For the first time, I'm interested in the handrails.
The idea to template these parts is a good one so that the size and location of the posts and rails can be repeated over and over without having to keep on measuring.
I'm the world of tanks player in that company it's an easy game to play a world off-ship game like tanks glad they support you that means some of my money that put in game helping you out I'm glad they're helping the community out like yourself.
This vid "and here's our little budget welder no Lincoln needed here" next vid "thanks to our sponsor Lincoln and WOW have you seen this new Lincoln bazinga 5000 GTI welder we just had helicopter lifted on to the ship??" :D :p
Really great video. Grid explains things in a very real and instructive way like a good tradesman! Obviously appealling to viewers going by the other comments! It certainly helps that he's in great shape, I managed that for about a month in my mid twenties! Grid, you obviously got a story, whether you choose to share it or not, so I can only say, "you are a dude"!
Love the ending I just sent this to a friend who has adhd and autism and was just recently saying she has fewer good days as she gets older (mostly a man’s vid I know but that’s a pretty view and neat story of the lounge). That’s an awakening discussion by Grid about the railing; I miss only something about what they call the sheer (Chris calls it camber of the decks in another comment). It’s one of the special things about the ship and e.g. Queen Mary because new large cruise ships don’t have sheer anymore. It took me a moment to think and understand that Grid seems right to make the railing posts vertical rather than square with the deck.
The concept of list (tilt of ship to one side) seems relevant. Does this ship have any list currently. I suppose the deck metal may not be perfectly even, but one could measure list off something inside probably. Or surely there was originally a list gauge or something.
The ship has a slight list. From what I can tell this is because of a main DC generator that was used for general power missing in the engine room. It was rather large so I assume this is the cause. The list hasn’t changed over the years but have considered pig iron blocks to even her out. I have a place that I can check her degree of list but nothing original left for this task.
@@AuroraRestorationProject Put a few pianos around, 700+lbs each. (I can hook you up, ha, I actually have similar feelings for the old vertical pianos like you’ve got for Aurora, I’m hired yearly to tune for the Great American Piano Drop in Winters where they are later destroyed. Kind of a crazy act of self harm but I can’t seem to convince the loopy old guy who runs it to save them.)
I'm surprised you aren't using a Jig for Positioning the Railing Posts. It would let you do it with just one person. Have it clamp on the previous post and hold the new post.
You guys gonna put a coat of heavy paint on after you finish each section ? Like a section behind? I feel like with the salt water you’d have to unless you’re just gonna wire brush it all at the end and paint it all at once?
I guess it’s too much work. But need to ask why you have not made up flanged posts that are bolted to the deck. Is it just the amount of labour or are their technical reasons why that’s not suitable?
I guess you don't need to worry about water getting in the pipes and freezing? i use cut off disks just about 7 days a week, at work and at home, pretty must since they came on the market, those dam little slivers of metal get into everything, even the bottom of my feet now and again, the railing looks great, what a huge project this ship is, wow.
hello there, i love the channel and the project is amazing. Something i am wondering though: a lot of the work presented is about the living quarters. What's the status of the ship bellow ? I can imagine there's ton of work needed on the hull, engine, structures etc.. ? what's your plan there ?
I'd love to hear the back story of @gridleemargraf What's your background and how did you get involved in this project? Are you doing this as a job and if not what do you do for an income? You seem like the kind of friend everyone would be super lucky to have.
Welder was JACKED !
I dunno what is more impressive, his welding skill, his presentation or how buff he is.
My toughts exactly!
Yea, and he seems to really enjoy the chance to show it off 😂
I guess he deserves to show of as he might have worked hard to get there 🙂
@@useitwice who wouldn't?
@@keimo2007 True!
Hell of an instructor... great stuff
Grid reminds me a bit of Mike Rowe, I bet Mike would like to see this project!
God to see sponsorship of your channel , every little helps 👍🏻
This is great!
Grid is really good at presenting. Thanks for his input. Excellent stuff.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you.
Capt. Abs over here teaching me welding stuff.
My pleasure.

Thank you
Grid has the combined souls of Bubbles, Ricky & Julian. This being has peaked.
I like how video quality looks like it's 2012 DIY channel. It helps me to remember good old days when everything was alright.
I love this guys personality, skills, and chest/abs. Thank you sir!
Thank you.
I can't believe how fast this channel is growing. Don't be afraid of longer videos, that's the way a lot of new series are going.
This dude is friggin hilarious! I appreciate the rawness of these videos. I am sure it will only improve with time.
😎
Awesome.

I agree...the History of the ship is very interesting and good to know but it's also relax and nice to watch some good old craftsman work!
Thank you.
Nice to see good workmanship in action, and to see good working practices and tips from a pro.
Thank you.
Difficult project, but what a beauty, so much potential ... I commend you all.
Wish I could join in…sending solidarity from Wisconsin…
Old ships RULE..! RESPECT
This is the most insane project I've seen a single person take on this far! 😊👍
Doing an awesome job too!💪

Nice explanation of the process by a professional. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you
I can't get enough of this build.
Thanks for watching..
I can't get enough of Grids build either
Very nice of Dave to keep his shirt on and not embarrass Grid.
😂😂😂
At this rate, we'll be lucky if this thing is done while any of us are still alive... which is OK by me because I enjoy the videos! 😁
I was thinking the same thing. Why not cut and weld all posts in place first? Making the whole railing shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.
Cool bit was getting Lee Marvin to play the welder.
I was thinking it’s more like Sam Elliot :)
😎
Great to get to know the crew! Great teachers
I didn’t know hulk hogan was into ship railing restoration these days
@@ffoska when it cut to him topless I was shook, blokes ripped!

Little advise:
Place the generator away as far as possible and use some extension cables.
Same for compressor 😉

We’re actually in completely fresh water. But yes we prime as we go.
Why set the hand railings at 98.7 degrees instead of 90. degrees? The ship is looking great!
Shop deck is not level. Nothing to square to.

The tediousness of that would drive me insane without a stencil to cheat.
Upped your game with this video. Now add music instead of grinder noise and no narrative. Add some time lapse to demonstrate progress.
