Good info. Didn't even realize there was a 30 Mbs option in 4K. Recorded our first video using the A7IV the other day and it was great having a camera with no record limit as we went to around 40 minutes before stopping. Can't remember the last camera we had that didn't have a recording limit. We recorded in 4K 30p, no overheating and no warning icon came up either. Loving this camera!
This is such a great video and thanks for sharing it, I have recently purchased Sony A7IV and the information provided really helps... wishing you all the very best
The reason why the 4K APS-C "looks bad" is that it's not down scaled because in APS-C mode the A7 IV and A7C II have 4096 horizontal pixels, which is 4K DCI, but the 1080p is not downscaled it's line skipped from the down sampled 4K. You don't want the down scaling if you are trying to get a soft image because it makes the image overly sharp. You want to record the APS-C mode with an Atomos Ninja V, Blackmagic Decklink Quad, or 4K60 Pro MK.2. Some have fasely claimed that the bigger pixels don't matter, but you can center crop the A6700 and the A7C II and the A7C II will have less noise and better color accuracy. Clearly the FX3 has better low light because of the larger pixels and the sensor must be larger than APS-C to get good noise performance.
1080p has way less rolling shutter and 1080p apsc mode has even less than full frame mode. So one reason might be if you shooting action fast moving subject. 1080p apsc is the way to go.
hello my friend, I hope you are well Thank you for the info your work is very appreciated, I ask you, can you do something similar in the Sony ZVE10, it would be great, well I hope answers soon, a hug and blessings ...
Great video and analysis. Using XAVC HS 4K with 50mbps or 30 mbps is great, but the big BUT is that you're limited to 24fps. If you are used to recording at 30fps, you need to live with this compromise.
Much appreciate your video. For my needs 4k 30MB looks good enough. 1080 looks very soft but on the other side, it might hide all the imperfections of my skin. Natural soft filter. I shall test it when I get my a7iv.

The lowest 4K HS bitrate (30Mbps in 24p, 45Mbps in 60p) is perfect for 1080p delivery or but want to shoot in 4K for cropping. If post production is on Apple silicon or a more modern PC, no issues 👌

Much less difference to my eyes than between 720 and 1080. 1080p can also be shot at 30 Mbit/sec Nice comparison,
I mean it's a 1000 pixels this way or that way.... I think 1080, 4K is not a huge jump in resolution yet. We are all still in the infancy of digital cameras. Why 1080 is still there is silly for $4K cameras.
Hey Mark, I have a question related to ZV E10. Currently, I'm owning ZV E10 + Samyang 12mm F2.0. Do you have any recommendation on which Polarized filter + Ring that I should get for my camera? I mainly shoot pics and videos outside in summer. I don't mind about the shutter speed(the 180 degree rule) so I just want to get everything inside my camera, like the beautiful sky. Thank you.
Okay but in clear image zoom mode there isn't focus point... when it comes to crop, I think 4k with full af possibility is much bettet choice than cler image zoom without focus.
damn...sony a7 iv vs fuji xh2s vs canon r7 or panasonic s5 ...and all I really need is a firmware update for my X-T4 to remove the recording limit (and not I don't want to use an external recorder)...help please ;)
Great video! I think my sweet spot would be 4K 50mbps 10bit 4:2:2. I guess it’s still better than the largest 8bit video from A7III for example? Did you notice much quality difference between this 10bit setting over 100mbps one? I guess 100mbps is more suited for people that do heavy color grading. Cheers.
This is very helpful information for me. I find trying to distinguish all those codecs as confusing as….well, something that is really confusing. Do you have any preference or recommendations on SD cards. I already have several Sandisk V30 cards, but I don’t know for sure if they will suffice when I get the A74. Do you think I need V90 cards?

I’m not sure why you’re having that issue as I don’t use premiere pro, but the solution is to use DaVinci resolve. it’s free and the best editor. I am switching to it myself.
Hey. Question. APS-C lenses like the sigma 16mm 1.4 or the 30mm 1.4… Can we still get the full 4k resolution at 24p? Or is it cropping the resolution as well as the image at 4k settings on APS-C lenses?
you still get full 4K resolution. it used a smaller part of the sensor, but it’s still full resolution. Just like when it does 4k60. the footage will be remarkably sharp. Those Sigma lenses are a secret weapon for the Sony full frame cameras for video 👍
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Tysm for the response. It's on the way for me. I was crazy enough to purchase the G 16-55 2.8 APS-C lens for my a6400. I can't wait to try it in 4k60 on the a7iv! That lens is beautiful.
hi. thank you for video. i need your help. i need just had video quality for instageram page. but wich camera a7 III or a7 iv or a7c in 1080 had can give me better video?
The A7Iv is best and shoot in 4k. You can choose the lower bit-rate as I showed in the video and you can export in 1080. But if you shoot on any of these cameras in 1080, the image will be soft.
Excellent work. Very helpful. But what about fps. I have Sony 6400 and when i move the camera in 1080/25p and 4k/25p video is very choppy. In 1080/50p video is smooth.
yes, capturing at a higher frame rate will help with panning and movement. but the motion of people will look a little more like a “soap opera” at these higher frame rates
Thank you So much for your work !!!☺ If you could make the same comparison 4k vs 1080 in different modes but a7iv vs Canon r6 with writing file sizes - it would be amazing. @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thank you for response ✨ if you’ll have opportunity - I think it’s what’s people searching for. These two cameras are some similar, but details you never know before trying both🥲
Hey Mark, thanks about it. What is more interesting to me in 1080 FF coverage vs. 1080 in Crop is DOF and Low light performance not only sharpness and image detail. Sure I can see cropped version more detailed, but I can also see less of a bokeh in the background and I guess it will be worse in low light. Can somebody verify my logic please :)
Sorry if this is not the smartest question - but does this mean that the quality is the finest when you have both 4K and APS-C together - i.e 4k at 60fps on Sony A74?
NOT a dumb question, and I should have mentioned it, but no, the best quality is the 4K Full frame. It uses the full sensor down sampled from 7k. the APS-C seems almost identical. But the 4K Full Frame looks sharpest by a bit
for heavy colour grading, the 10-bit will be your key to success. But of course, if you have more info, it’s better for colour grading (but a lot of people won’t ever need that minute detail)
Hi Mark, thanks to share your interesting video. I have 2 questions please: 1) I will buy Sony A7 IV, which handyman zoom lens would you buy? I take freehand 4K documentaries. 2) Which profile would you choose to document the daily life of an indigenous population in their village on red earth? Thank you
The kit lens is a decent zoom if you buy it with the camera, but the lens I use is the Tamron 28-75. Great quality, light, affordable and a constant f2.8. geni.us/NVva0Kp I would suggest using S-Log3 with the LeemingLUT to get the best quality out of your A7iv. But if you do not want to colour grade in post, then I would choose Picture Profile Off, or PP11 (S-Cinetone).
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis THANK you a lot for your suggestion. I read Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is a very good zoom but 75mm is little for me. I need around 100mm or a it more. Do you know another good zoom please?
The 70-180 is crazy good at stays at the constant 2.8 amzn.to/3KciQ2m If you need wider Tamron just released the 35-150 2-2.8 www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1658158-REG/tamron_a058_35_150mm_f_f_2_2_8_di_iii.html/BI/21906/KBID/28274/kw/TA351502SE/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xTA351502SE
That’s tough - on full frame the sigma is equivalent to 27-75 f4.2. So a little better than the kit 28-70 3.5-5.6. Bit not a huge difference. and the kit lens is stabilized. I would instead save a little more money and do the Tamron 28-75 2.8
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I was thinking about the size of the lens as one of the major factor. You are right about f4.2 though. Plus if I consider apsc lens, I will have same range values on photos and video since I intend to use 4k 60 mostly with catalyst brows to stabilize footage in post production
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis ah i see, thats a shame youd think they'd bump it up. guess thats only for those rich a7siii and A1 owners XD. Could you make a "best video settings" video for the a7iv? like you did with the zv-e10?

AND I went out over the weekend and plunked down my dinero for a A7iv, based entirely on your unequivocal endorsement. So I better turn into Emmanuel Lubezki or Robert Richardson or somebody else of their caliber or I'm going to be mighty upset with you. Keep 'em coming.
It’s surprising that 1080p in aps c mode is sharper than full frame, I thought full frame should have more pixels to oversample from hence better in quality?
They are just taking a cropped portion of the center for 1080, so in order to get a full sensor readout, they line skip the 1080. So the crop mode which is not line skipped would be sharper. The 4k is far shaper because it is 7k down sampled to 4k with no line skipping
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thanks for the reply. It escapes me why they don’t do downsample for 1080p as they do for 4K, should be the same logic but even easier with less pixels to sample from.
it would be nice to have 4K 60 in full frame, but looking at my tests, I see why they would want to keep it to apsc mode. if the 60 full frame had been soft, people would noticed. but the 60 in apsc is as sharp as a tack

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Ohh, what's that? Dougie just fell on the floor? Harvey just pushed him over? Damn son, those Sony cameras really have some rivalry going on haha
Why do they bother with the outdated low quality 1080 HD at all anymore? Seems like it's been around for a decade and rediculous to use VS 4K all the way - computer editing or not.
I never use it myself. But many people insist on it - even though, as I explained in the video, you can get a 4K file just as small 🤷♂️. But I don’t know everyone’s situation.
I don’t see any wild stuff on any of my screens, but it was snowing. Make sure you’re watching in full resolution. - sometimes UA-cam will show you stuff in lower quality
I wonder where you stand on the retro lens debate of things? not proper full-sized lenses but these Nameless 16mm, 25mm, 35mm are 1.4 -1.8 C-mount lens that is under 40$ and are supposed to be comparable to " big boy " lenses. because from the videos I find. no one really goes in-depth without making it easy to understand. there's so much obfuscation. and how do you feel about this running narrative of everyone heading towards mirrorless as the future standard for cameras? are DSLRs becoming...obsolete?
retro lenses can be great if you are looking for some character - but generally they are manual focus and have many imperfections. But there are a lot of photographers who get them for a “look” or they just like them. I do think the camera industry will be all mirrorless eventually, but it’s not like a dslr will stop working - you’ll still be able to use a good dslr in 10 years. I’m sure there are people who will never stop using them

Definitely, sharp 4K is useful for cropping or extra reach on a 1080 timeline. But if I watch videos and movies I can't hardly tell the difference between 1080 and 4K. Much less difference to my eyes than between 720 and 1080. 1080p can also be shot at 30 Mbit/sec
Nice comparison,
I mean it's a 1000 pixels this way or that way.... I think 1080, 4K is not a huge jump in resolution yet. We are all still in the infancy of digital cameras. Why 1080 is still there is silly for $4K cameras.
How i get a shaper quality with my a6400?
Hey Mark,
I have a question related to ZV E10.
Cheers.
Ues, in most situations, you won’t notice a difference in the 100mbps.
Ran this test on my A7c which oversamples 4k from 6k. Unfortunately, apsc doesn't improve. Sad. Will post a video for proof.
Thanks for letting us know. look forward to the test
These Sandisk v30 work on all modes except All-I (which I do not use) geni.us/QoMpMQ
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Sweet 👍🏼. Thanks
what about the a7III and a7c is the 1080p crop downsampled to? thanks for your work!
looking into it!!
You are the best🚀
New sub here !! great video with an amazing topic. I tested myself on my A7S3 the 4K XAVC HS 30MB 4:2:0 10 bit and the result is just ...... THE SAME!!!... as 4k XAVC HS 100MB 4:2:2 10 Bit... honestly I can't see any difference, but the amazing is that recording at 30MB on a 128GB SD Card I get 8 hours !! of storage vs 2:41 at 100MB..... OMG !!... this is game changer hahaha.... nice job
Thanks for the info - I might do one on the A7iii myself!!

hi. thank you for video. i need your help. when I record a video from xavc hs format and transfer my file to premiere pro-2022 after edited the file and report I saw this error" this file requires the hevc code which is included white a creative cloud membership. to upgrade to a paid plan ". can you give me a guide on what I must do?
I’m not sure why you’re having that issue as I don’t use premiere pro, but the solution is to use DaVinci resolve. it’s free and the best editor. I am switching to it myself.
Hey. Question.
APS-C lenses like the sigma 16mm 1.4 or the 30mm 1.4…
Can we still get the full 4k resolution at 24p?
@@ronniegibbs2594 it’s gonna be a fantastic combo!!
hi. thank you for video. i need your help. i need just had video quality for instageram page. but wich camera a7 III or a7 iv or a7c in 1080 had can give me better video?
The A7Iv is best and shoot in 4k. You can choose the lower bit-rate as I showed in the video and you can export in 1080. But if you shoot on any of these cameras in 1080, the image will be soft.
Nice video ! can you shoot 4k 25p in apsc crop mode with it ?
absolutely
Nice video ! can you make the same for the zve10? Thank you
In the works
I think the lowest my XT3 does is 100mb in 4k or 1080. It goes up to 400. seeing 30 is just surprising
Yes - it’s the first time I think I’ve seen it. And it’s a high quality image.
Couldn’t find this info ANYWHERE. For those who don’t have opportunity to try these cameras in stores and don’t know will their the computer work with these files - this information would be precious ✨ hello from Ukraine 🫶
Hi From Canada!! I will look into it - but I don't have a R6 at the moment.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thank you for response ✨ if you’ll have opportunity - I think it’s what’s people searching for. These two cameras are some similar, but details you never know before trying both🥲
Awesome!
Thanks!!
you are amazing
haha - I think so!!
Exactly
does 1080 p cropped 120fps has active steady Ibis ?
No, no active steady shot in 120
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis :-( thanks bro
Can we get a zve10 1080p vs a7iv crop 1080p comparison? Lol
How do you put the Sony A7IV in 1080p mode (rookie camera user)
It’s in the settings under file format
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis is it XAVC S HD??
Sorry if this is not the smartest question - but does this mean that the quality is the finest when you have both 4K and APS-C together - i.e 4k at 60fps on Sony A74?
NOT a dumb question, and I should have mentioned it, but no, the best quality is the 4K Full frame. It uses the full sensor down sampled from 7k. the APS-C seems almost identical. But the 4K Full Frame looks sharpest by a bit
The real question is how does the 30-50Mbps hold up to color corrections and heavy changes to the image over the all-I
for heavy colour grading, the 10-bit will be your key to success.
Great quality, light, affordable and a constant f2.8. geni.us/NVva0Kp
I would suggest using S-Log3 with the LeemingLUT to get the best quality out of your A7iv.
@@ExploringWorldUA-cam how wide do you need it to go
The 70-180 is crazy good at stays at the constant 2.8 amzn.to/3KciQ2m
If you need wider Tamron just released the 35-150 2-2.8 www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1658158-REG/tamron_a058_35_150mm_f_f_2_2_8_di_iii.html/BI/21906/KBID/28274/kw/TA351502SE/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xTA351502SE
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 28mm is Ok.
Still gotta pick the poison, less sharpness in 1080p, or more rolling shutter & crop in 4k.
apsc mode in 4K has very little rolling shutter
Plz do same video about the little doggy they say 1080p is very soft compared to the 4k
I am preparing that video too
How about using sigma 18-50 apsc lens on A7IV as main lens as a traveling combo. Instead of getting kit lens
Hey mark what is the highest bitrate for 120p?
100mbps. nothing different here
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis ah i see, thats a shame youd think they'd bump it up. guess thats only for those rich a7siii and A1 owners XD. Could you make a "best video settings" video for the a7iv? like you did with the zv-e10?
@@slyfox8900 yes - I should and definitely will do that.
I thought you could only do 1080 hd in 8 bit on the A7iv
you can do 10 bit 4.2.2. up to 60p in 10-bit in 1080
Hey Mark, is there any way to get sharp 1080p in zv-e10?
Looking into it!!
Dude, I've said it before, but I'm a'gonna say it again, you're some kind of camera genius guru/communicator. This was like, well, let's call it what it is: hall of fame material.
I will take all credit for your future successes 🤣🤣
Science saying the truth 😁😁
Great video.....👍
Do the same tests with little duggy, it will be fun 😉✌️

Agreed. Why does Sony not apply the same logic from 6k to 1080p downsampling?
4K is just beautiful! Damn the rolling shutter in 4k though.
Yes, you definitely have to be aware of it and avoid it
Still no hope for slow motion FF 4K. Frustrating that Sony cropped - its just so useful to have a 40% push in wide.
it would be nice to have 4K 60 in full frame, but looking at my tests, I see why they would want to keep it to apsc mode. if the 60 full frame had been soft, people would noticed. but the 60 in apsc is as sharp as a tack
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis but no good for interior - id still prefer soft 4K over sub par 1080
@@markshirley01 fair enough - I take a wide lens when I want 60p, but there is only so wide you can go

No science here, just terrible people doing terrible things :P
It was quite surprising how bad the 1080 really was in comparison. You uncovered a gem there with that XAVC mode. How does Dougie respond to this type of savage comparison?
Gonna have to figure out something for little Dougie
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Ohh, what's that? Dougie just fell on the floor? Harvey just pushed him over? Damn son, those Sony cameras really have some rivalry going on haha
I sold a Canon t4i and the 1080 looked the same. 12 years later, same 1080? Wth? Why bother with 1080? Kick it to curb and give us all 4K.
Am I tripping or is there some wild noise stuff going on in the background of that very first 100Mbps shot?
I’m sure there are people who will never stop using them
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis thank you. that was the most honest take I've seen on either so far. it always feels like someone's trying to pander to both sides. thank you for being cut and dry about it.

Is 1080p HDMI out also soft?
Why does the 1080p look really sharp in this review?
ua-cam.com/video/ww9C5zM_CiI/v-deo.html
It will be the same sharpness coming out of the hdmi. It looks sharper in this video because he is comparing it to the a7iii which is less sharp. He he compared the 1080 in the A74 to the 4K in the a74 - you would see the difference. The 1080 is still useable in my opinion. Just add a little sharpening in post
