It wasn’t an error, they did it on purpose and were hoping they wouldn’t get caught.
They're like yeah we're really sorry.. not sorry... 10's of millions later..
Once your purchase goes over a certain amount you shouldn’t have to pay for the bags.
Someone thought they were operating "gray" area that they were very likely to get away with. The legal risk was worth the financial gain. They bet wrong, and now they're "Sorry" they got caught. They'd do it again tomorrow if it made financial sense to them.
It doesn't even matter if they do get caught because the fine will be less than what they profited.
but seirously, who cares
Just like the gas tax at the pump that never fixes the roads!
It fixes the roads alright… just not where you want them to be fixed 😂
We get charged for getting a bag at the grocery store in California. This is NOTHING NEW. Most people bring their own bags. It's not a big deal.
@@countdankula6740 private driveways anyone? Politicians only!
In costa rica they have completely erased ALL plastic bags either bring your own or buy one and they are way more than 10 cents way more..because the small nation just cant cope with so much plastic and people are carrying their own bags
People vote for democrats who run on creating these dumb laws and then they get upset when they get what they wanted.
If you shop at Mariano’s you’re already overpaying for everything in your cart. lol
Nobody’s forcing you to go there stick with Aldi
@@BobHansen-ik1lnthe store is some what nice.. I don’t like Mariano’s any more. Too much
What is the $78m being spent on? New car for the mayor? New house for the city attorney?
Exactly. Follow the money. 🕵🏽♀️
MIGRANTS!!!!!!!!!!
Facts lmfao ppl need to start voting if smarter
Gots to share the wealth with the under represented!
The "illegal" migrants who are getting everything for free with US tax dollars...And most of them are unvetted fighting age males, some of whom are criminals and terrorists...
In other words - "We apologize for being caught stealing. We promise to do a better job (at stealing) in the future." You'll save a lot of heartache by just bringing your own reusable grocery bags - no daily charge that's for sure.
That’s assuming you are at home, when you decide to go to the grocery store. I often stop on the way home from work. The bags are in the house from the last time I brought the groceries in. I’m not putting them back in the car, after I put my groceries away. Go no bag and buy what you can carry.
Exactly 💯
People can, and do, literally run out with thousands of dollars in products without any blowback, so why should the stores follow the laws?
@@johnpatz8395 I know, we should really enforce gun control. Because they have always cared about laws.
Great. The city will fine the store and make more money and consumers are left empty.
We get charged for getting a bag at the grocery store in California. This is NOTHING NEW. Most people bring their own bags. It's not a big deal.
Thank you, i just bring my own bag or just buy enough bags to get my groceries home and keep it moving. @boohere2
@ralphferley2602 Never had a outbreak related illness from bags here in California. It's been a long time now since people started bringing their own bags.
@@boohere2 Both states should stop voting democrat, the stores are leaving because of the unchecked theft cause democrats won’t charge criminals. Chicago likely can’t turn around, they’re centuries deep, but California maybe has a chance
The few people left in California that still shop there, use store shopping carts.
Cheaper than a 10 cent bag, AND
you get to take it with you to your homeless shelter.
When government adds new tax, it never removes it. It raises it.
The government never met a tax it didn't like
They all are a bunch of Crooks . . we know it's all about greed . . There should be a class action lawsuit 💯
I wonder how much compensation we would get if it was filed....
$0.02 checks?
@@GreggyMcfly Don't be ridiculous let's keep it real they have stolen Billions over the years they got the money. . JB pritzker just passed a 53 Billion dollar budget 🤨

EBT card user’s don’t pay the bag tax
Good way to beat the system! 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Not anymore
Nobody should.
It’s not bag tax it’s the store charge.
Shoplifters aren’t contributing to the tax revenue because they are bringing their own backpacks.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😅😅😅😅I mean youre not lying
Petco charges 10 cents per bag in all of their stores regardless of if the store location has a bag tax in place or not.
Most corporations are greedy and evil. I HATE living in this society of greedy, evil businesses.
So, do you wanna live in a commune?
IT'S 10 CENTS BECAUSE THERE'S A 3 CENT TAX ON THE 7 CENT BAG TAX.......
it’s a bag tax not a bag fee. THANK YOU
So a tax on a tax
LOL
Nah, when I go to stores (Dollar Tree specifically)it’s 2 cents for the bag and 5 cents for the bag tax for a total of 7 cents
So why did they fix it to 7 cents then after the news came in ?? You’re wrong.
Businesses already calculate the price of the products in the store, to cover their expenses like the bags. Any charge for these bag, is an over charge. Stop paying for these bags, bring your own.
I bring my own bags
I’m NYC they charge between $0.25 and $1.50 for bags and it’s killing us out here this is a bad thing and I get the save the environment no more plastic bags just don’t charge us for bags they should be free
“We have taken immediate action to rectify the mistake…” because we got caught trying to cheat our customers and broke the law.
lol right
In Britain, for as long as I can remember grocery bags cost money, around 10c now. People routinely bring their own bags, take them home to be used again next trip. It's not hard to do this.
Food bazaar in the Bronx charges for a roll of plastic bags that we don’t need like around 2 dollars when I just need one bag. Investigate that.
They dam well knew all these businesses do this
Every customer should take legal action
Would there even be a legal issue? I think a store should be able to charge more for bags if they wanted, that’s capitalism. Consumers could go to one of the lower bag price competitors or bring their own. Where I live no store gives you a bag for free even fast food restaurants charge an extra fee if you get take out to cover the cost of the extra materials.
She mad 😡 over ten cent, why aren't you mad 🤪 that your city is the one ripping you off. Where is the money 💰 really going. 🤔
Because I've been bring my own bags for years and I have bigger fish to fry
Boycott these scammers
Store owner: You caught me! 😂
You know people are struggling in a city when you have a whole story about an extra 3 cents being charged on a weekly grocery trip.
Times x amount of bags.
And remember they put the tax on sugar in the drinks
They took it off in a matter of months bcz it didn't work
@@rondas7772 hell yea we ain’t go for that a 2 litter was was 5$
@@geeharris6927 exactly
I’m more upset with the city, getting a nickel for doing absolutely nothing while the grocer has to buy the bag, transport the bag, and store the bag. Why is government getting a free pass? Talk about being ill informed.
You don't want to pay 7 cents for a bag?!, bring your own then, its free, no brainer!🙄🤣
I dont bring my own bags, and I never pay that 7 cent fleecing fee. Stores will have to pay for a bag attendant to specifically hand out a bag for every 7 cents I hand them. And I will never feel bad about not paying it, either, especially after this story, comment all you want
Sometimes ppl forgot ms no brainer
What’s also irritating is that when you bring your own bag, you’ve gotta pack your own groceries.
A friend of mine that lives there, takes a couple small plastic tubs to the store, sets them in the cart and then packs the groceries back into them after checkout. He then just sets the tubs into the trunk of his car. He and his wife say it’s easier to carry into the house as well.
How is that irritating 😂😂 😂😂😂 you sound like when you eat out you DON'T clean the table cause "that's not my job".
I actually prefer to carry my own insulated shopping tote-and just use that to lug the groceries around the store. Keeps things cold and more efficient
They do at the grocery stores I go to.
I’m confused, couldn’t any business charge their own bag fees as long as they’re meeting the minimum from the law? I know that for years stores have provided bags as a convenience, but what is stopping them from charging for the entire amount, especially for paper bags which usually are more expensive?
They are complaining about a 10 cent bag tax. Where I live in california we pay 25 cents for bags. They don't call it a tax it's called a bag fee.
California has the highest income in the country and you guys still complain. Way to put yourself in another’s situation the cost of living here is obviously cheaper along with the average income.
Los Angeles County has been charging 10 cents for bags since 2010. As someone in the forum said, once they add new taxes, they never remove it. Bring your own bag is the solution.
But the receipt said “Paper bag fee” - *fee*, not *tax*; it’s the store just charging for a paper bag. And the tax only applies to plastic bags, doesn’t it?
I'm here in Maine and all we pay is .05¢ per bag. But they also let it slide a lot too.
Target is doing the same thing.
In California it has been 10 cents a bag since the beginning. Now they want to ban the bags completely.
PLastic bags
They did this for paper bags since 2015.
Just plastic bags but stores will be allowed to have them if they limit them. My mom’s best friend works at a grocery store in California and they allow plastic bags.
of course they can find out, the city can request their charge history over a period of time and see when it was changed from 7 cents to 10 cents easy since it shows it on the receipt!
I will no longer shop in that store 😢
Government: Bag tax? We'll have to charge sales tax on a bag tax!
It's not hard to bring your own bags to the store
If you don't want to pay BRING YOUR OWN BAG
Next would be road usage tax charging per mile of travel 😂
Brilliant legislators 👏🏻
City: Yeah, sometimes we investigate.
😂😂😂 Kick backs!
a few years back, told the plastic bags cost 3 to 4 cents and paper bags cost 10-12 cents.
Chicago having a 7 cent bag tax is more outrageous than the fact a grocery store overcharged for the bag tax. My goodness it was not enough that we cannot even buy a pack of gum without being taxed in IL that now Chicago has taxes on a grocery bag. That is insane.
When you fear integrity and accountability, you are NOT the good guys.
Mariano’s in the suburbs charges 10 cents per bag. We have no bag tax. They started doing this in 2023.
People actually pay for bags? I hit 0 every time. 🤷♀️
“Do you want a bag.” Translation “We charge .10¢ a bag. If you don’t want to pay for one then you can carry out what you bought yourself.” Thieves will just use their backpacks. They should be given for free.
Here in CT the bag tax is only on plastic bags. So the grocery stores only carry paper bags. Which cost the same 10 cents. But to the store instead of the state.
A lot of countries charge for plastic bags at the grocery stores, and people are already used to brining their own. This helps to minimize the amount of plastic bags left out on the streets, actually helps to keep the environment cleaner and safer
Such big news for a small 3cents. I also live in Cali and its 10cents here.
I don’t care how much of my money is being stolen..I want every cent and the news is how locals are informed
What a shock. They also do that with groceries too.
So the government steals 5 cents and everyone has to be fine with it. The store steals 3 cents and everyone freaks out.
A second complaint! So why aren’t they citing them?
It doesn't sound like Mariano's needs to be notified of anything, they are well aware of what they are doing.
At a store here in indiana you have to pay .10 a bag and .25 for the cart till you bring it back. The store is called ruler and it’s a part of Kroger. The bags are a lot nicer than what they get so not as cheap made.
Im okay with that.. grocery stores profits are marginal.. they put out an outstanding service & product
So a product packaged in a plastic container or ziplock bag such as in the delicatessen is put in a plastic bag charging the buyer for the plastic bag (which displays the store logo) is supposed to reduce plastic waste? What is a waste is thinking that a new tax scam is really helping the environment.
We pay .10 a bag at one of the stores here. You also have to pay .25 for the cart but you get that back if you bring the cart back. The store is called ruler it’s a part of Kroger
Well what exactly were you expecting when you live in a U.S. state that is infamous for taxing everything, including the AIR?
just boycott the place simple as that,or they should offer free bags
U would be boycotting every single store in the city of Chicago, apparently you live in another state or city, be quiet
Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, etc won’t charge you the brown bag fee. That grocery store chose to put on extra tax.
Bag tax hits the poor most, typical of politicians. I live in Chicago, bag tax and bike lanes drive me to do my shopping in the suburbs.
Why is it so difficult to bring a recycling bags
I've been charged up to 15 cents here in CA.
They call it Crook County for a reason…
They changed it when they got caught welcome to Chicago.
Even if you dont have a receipt, as long as the charge to the retailer shows on your bank account, they should have to pay up.
If they have a “club card” they know exactly who they owe how much to. But retailers won’t use that data to alert consumers that they owe. $16.73 to Susan jones.
They have to make up for the looting somehow.
Wow so they got caught and nothing happened
bag tax? who takes their own bags to a market? The retailer should get paid for collecting a tax for the city.
If low life criminals can literally rob stores blind without consequences, why should the company be in trouble for its actions? After all they stole less than $1000 on each occurance.
Businesses collecting nonexistent taxes is a hustle as old as time.
The bag tax is 7 cents, the bag "fee" is 3 cents. Stores can charge for bags if they want to. Same as charging for debit purchases, deliveries, etc. It costs the store money for the bags. The 2 cents the store gets from the 7 cent tax is to help them offset the cost of collecting the tax. The other 3 cents is to add to the bottom line. The big issue is that the city created the tax to make revenue, not protect the environment. The city will raise the bag tax to increase revenues. Watch the store drop the 3 cents a bag and raise the price of everything one cent. Simple solution is bring your own bags, or shop elsewhere.
Ever since the bag tax began, the grocery bags have become thinner and smaller. The system is banking on people requesting double bags for heavier items.
I usually bring my own grocery bags. But if I ever forget to bring a bag, I’ll just carry my receipt and my purchases out of the store in my hand. Or if necessary I’ll just use the free bags from the meat, poultry or produce department or a discarded box from the grocery store.
I care about the environment. But I don’t want to be price gouged by the bogus bag tax. It seems like it only benefits the government, and big businesses.
Please… prince George county’s paper bag tax is 10 cents. That grocer saw PG’s cost and said “we can do that”
The city is overcharging. Bag tax doesn't work.
This is the largest issue facing Chicago, once this is resolved utopia will be upon the city!
They had to know they were overcharging because they changed the software to reflect the higher amount.
On the flip side, this will push people to start using recyclable bags. Six and one hand, half a dozen in another
Ten years ago, in Europe, they were already taxing plastic bags. I figured it'd come to america.
3 cents might not sound like a lot, but it's almost 50% more than the actual tax.
They have to pay for the bags but only keep 2 cents out of 7?
Dorothy...Aldi charged more. Please check. They recently dropped the price. Snap receipeients were not suppose to pay, but Aldi charged anyways.
You have to pay taxes to do stuff in the US? OMG That's crazy and so new. Maybe leave the country.
The problem isn't the overcharge, it's the TAX. No tax, no overcharge. Shame on Ch. 2.
I been paying 10¢ for a bag along time already. I live in California.. it just helps me bring my bags with me.
City and corporate corruption👎☹️
There was NO mistake. Bags are a part of the retailers overhead. Tired of being gouged and cheated.
Why is this still being talked about we have been charged for plastic bags for a few years now 🤨
So, what if you bring your own bags? No tax charge then! Right?
Why should they have to provide you with free bags? Bring your own!
I did a quick look up online for those t-bags {thank you bags} they refer to. They buy them in the thousand counts for a box of 1000. They are two cents each. And we're not talking about bulk order here. These are generic takeout bags. The ones with the handles that you get a lot of grocery stores etc.
The greed is real
Wait a second isn't this double dipping too? I've been finding that we're getting taxed on things like delivery charges and service fees and etc. Anything to jump up the initial amount of the products that you buy so then the tax it again as a city tax
Wow $0.07? It’s $0.10 in Maryland.
What’s funny is California bag tax is going up from 10 cents to 25 cents!! The state has made millions and now they are going to make even more!!
Sounds like it should not be more than 5 cents a bag. 2 cents extra to the store is not justified. Crooks.
I thought the tax applied to plastic bags, for obvious environmental reasons. Why is it being applied to paper bags that are both recyclable & decompose naturally ?
Well, shop at a different store then.
Each lost customer is hundreds or thousands of dollars of lost profit a year.
