I love when the Sensei says "I don't know what to call this" - because he knows how to use it and how to execute it so and the end of the day it does not matter what its called :)
I have been teaching myself by watching this video and it is superb. Seipai is new to me, and the breakdown is perfect for learning. It's a nice touch to include some of the bunkai in a subframe as it is being done. I am a brown belt from Canada. Chimo!
Seipai is one kata that I am always deeply interested in, but I have a long way and a lot o learn for me to understand the kata and practise correctly. This presentation has given me deep insight and is now my practice reference manual. Thank you Sensei and Team. Very enlightening, thank you.
Ah, we are so grateful for your kind words and blessings - thank you for the time you spend watching our channel. We know there are many, many karate channels out there - we are glad you watch ours 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️

I would choose you as my instructor. Nicely done! You are one of us. We will be following you and your career. Keep up the good work.
Amazing break down - so so helpful not just to learn initially, but also to deepen the practice 🙏 Had to giggle when you slightly yelled ‚PIVOT‘ (any other Friends Fans here…? 😁) Thanks again 🙏🙏
Ah, thank you so much for the lovely comment! Ché, for some reason, often yells slightly when recording 😅😅😅 I think it's a hangover from when he used to coach sports on the school field. Pivot!
Dou itashimashite, Kenneth! We are so glad to help in any way with the discovery and enjoyment of kata, and we love to hear from our viewers all over the world :) :)
We can all see the same kata differently, and grow together with it :D Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment, we always appreciate it :)
Sepai is an interesting kata in that it has a number of unusual techniques including one that uses the unique use of a fist shaped like it would be when one knocks on the door. It seems to be of Chinese origin meaning 18 hands. When performing this kata be prepared to do a lot of circular arm movements and body twisting. Keep up the great work Che Sensei.
Sepai is a wonderful kata, with an incredible elegance when performed with the right balance of power and speed. Thank you so much for commenting, Sensei!
It has been a whole since I had a dojo to go to regularly. Unfortunately, that means some bad habits have crept into my kata. These videos have been excellent for reference and my kata are looking good...even I do say so myself. Thank you, Sensei.
It is our great honour to be helpful to others in their karate journey! And it is important to be proud of the progress we make when we put in the effort. Drop us an email sometime and send a video :D
Excellent!, thank you very much for this great instructional video, I hope someday you could do one for kata Suparimpei, anyways personally I think this is the best youtube channel for Goju Ryu. 🥋✌
Ah, thank you so much, Jose! Suparinpei is going to be such a massive project, and we want to approach it with utter respect and experience. We need to go train with some serious Senseis before we attempt this kata! Thank you so much for your kind words - we truly appreciate them 🙇🏻♀️
It’s really unusual watching these videos because at my Dojo we are taught to do the Katas relatively fast to save time. So watching the katas at the slow timing that is commonly used seems really abnormal but is good to watch.
Ah, that's interesting - with us, there are fast and slow parts, with each kata having its own rhythm, like a song. But it takes a special level of skill to perform them fast without mistakes or sloppiness! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment 🙇🏻♀️
Hello, Eban! We have been toying with the idea of doing Zoom seminars, as there seems to be some interest. We'll post any updates to our community page, so please do stay subscribed and tuned in for any news regarding seminars :) Thank you for watching and commenting!
Arigatou, sensei! Really appreciate the wonderful attention to detail...been working on this kata for 35 years yet you gave more than a few insights. Any plans for something similar for suparinpei?
Ah, thank you, Sensei! Suparinpei is a massive undertaking - just the sheer length and possible variations means an hour long video, even after editing. Also, Ché feels he is not really senior enough to be commenting and teaching this kata, even though he has been doing it a long time. We hope to train with some seniors to gain more knowledge and confidence before we tackle it. But as we say in SA: one day is one day!
So with some of our videos we have done mirrored versions, but we definitely will go back and do mirror versions of the ones that need it! It's hard enough to learn a kata without having to turn it around in your head as well! Thank you so much for the feedback, and for taking the time to watch and comment 🙇🏻♀️
The problem with kata has always been the instructor not telling you what every move is used for not just doing moves in the air. i tell anyone i and teaching every meaning of the move in kata so they know why they are doing it.
Seipai, a dark side of sanseru. Or two seipais make one sanseru. Or sanchin and seisan make the black jack. Or suparimpei divided by sanchin is sanseru yet again. So enough of maths here. :)
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre : on a serious note, Goju-ruy is a variation of Baihe-quan in a lineage of Liu Long-gong (Ryu Ruko), to compare to Shu Shiwa's which is Uechi-ryu now. Hence both have original 3, 13, 36 steps/forms of movements in their kata. As to sanchin, three is obvious in Baihe-quan: 1) natural thrust (chishi position 1, when you hold it vertically in extended hand); 2) middle block (chishi position 2, when bent in elbow and the weight twists your forearm inside out); 3) a natural fence reaction with palms facing forward (meh, said Okinawans and left only two in sanchin-gata doing it also one-handed because it's not Fujian and they are all brave and tough like archats from Shorin-ryu). Seisan is for public demonstration: hence 3 + 10 (no more fingers to count anyway to add something to sanchin). Sanseru is also 3 (begins with sanchin-gata) + 10 like in seisan and... oh, they said in the back alleys of Fuzhou, let's double because it will be main kata, lol! Suparimpei or pechurin, it's 100 (a lot...) and sometimes these 8 extra because crane kung-fu has a babuilian taolu/kata, too. Chojun Miyagi for his Goju-ryu made 18 (seipai) as a half of sanseru (because seisan is a dark, black, soft, ju, yin side of sanseru, which is agressive, punchy, hard, go, yang, and like saifa is a travel-size kururumfa). Oh, there was rokkishu (6 forms of palms) which is made to tensho because students had problems with math (Jundokan version makes it back to 6 initial forms while other Ryuha interpretations count to 7, 8 etc. which is lame (you may find some their "missed" palms in seisan, too). But what do I know. Mystics and waxing poetic about saints, holly numbers, legendary archats, Buddhism and other sanctuary caca de torro sound more "solid" when explaining numbering, of course. :)
12 kata, 6 pairs, maybe? My first clear reference to the possible meaning of the numbers were from the Bubishi. 108 sins, meridian points, etc etc Numbers seem to play a large role in the martial arts culture - perhaps understanding that will help my dumb ass understand a tiny bit more 🤣
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre : actually, there are 13 kata (randomly in pairs): gekisai (2), sanchin (2), tensho, saifa, kururumfa, sanseru, seipai, shisochin, seiyunchin, seisan, suparimpei. :) But other than steps or combinations, they mean nothing (so unpoetic me).
I love when the Sensei says "I don't know what to call this" - because he knows how to use it and how to execute it so and the end of the day it does not matter what its called :)
We always try to be honest in our channel - if that shines through, then we are happy with what we are doing :D

The problem with kata has always been the instructor not telling you what every move is used for not just doing moves in the air. i tell anyone i and teaching every meaning of the move in kata so they know why they are doing it.
Exactly! Kata is the vehicle for bunkai - a living textbook from which we can draw our knowledge. You are teaching it correctly ❤️
Sensei Braam Peens taught me this in 2006/7.
And that man knew his kata, better than most. Shame, hope he's enjoying hojo undo again, wherever he is 🙏
Seipai, a dark side of sanseru. Or two seipais make one sanseru. Or sanchin and seisan make the black jack. Or suparimpei divided by sanchin is sanseru yet again. So enough of maths here. :)
Sometimes, I think the old masters are trolling us. "Hey, let's give the kata random numbers" and now we are trying to find meaning in it 😂
