Thank you for always commenting so regularly - we appreciate you!

Sensai, i am from India, Kerala. It was very helpful. Thanks to you Sensai. (We laughed a lot... the comments that were added to the video, made the video more interesting)
Excellent video, good sound and picture quality! I see that Zoe Sensei's background as an Aikido Uke was put to good uses. Loved the comments that were added to the video and the kata for pistol at the end. my original senseis were husband and wife and its was always fun to have them work together. Your comment about moving off the center line is very important and always not realized by martial artist. Especially with older or smaller defenders. The center line and how it is used is key to understanding several martial arts. You can also move off the center line inside of the opponents punch. this lets you deliver a vertical palm strike to the chin, block the second punch and hit the carotid artery. I think that palm strike and carotid artery strikes are also very important to older and younger defenders. Lastly moving off the center line can give you the ability to just run if that is the best option. The problem I have always dealt with when learning bunkai is since most attacks are two roundhouses, right and left, how do defend against the second while dealing with the first. being quick and moving off the center line are two ways, but not all of us are quick anymore! I feel reinforcing basics are so very important. Thank you again for a great video.
Especially as a slower, smaller lady defender, I don't like bunkai that require me to be on the inside, even if the targets are juicier and more effective. Smashing a knee or the head or kidneys doesn't require huge power and are still effective ways to deal with attackers. Off the line can be so helpful! My six years of Aikido have never stopped being useful - I wish I could still train it more, but can't find a morning class to attend, sadly. (and pandemic still, here in SA. We are now on our third wave!) Thank for taking the time to write such a lovely, thoughtful and entertaining comment - we are always so, so glad to hear from you 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
First and foremost, I wanted to apologize, Zoe, Sensei, for not congratulating you SOONER on what I BELIEVE was your “recent “ promotion to San Dan! Am I correct;)? If so- how excellent for you( if I’m wrong... sorry;)!! Secondly, thank you again for the wonderfully informative ( and much appreciated humor filled☺️) video on the basics of this wonderful kata. I , too, btw, enjoy reading the comment section afterwards.... and am happy that we, viewers All, feel the collaboration of shared ideas and enjoyable learning and experimentation between fellow karateka;). I’ll save my questions for next time! Thanks again! P.s. Do appreciate all “ nerdy” tattoos;)! Just sayin’.
Ah, thank you so much! I really do like being a san dan - I finally have my "instructor's grade"- now I am considered senior enough to technically run a dojo on my own without the oversight of a higher dan. (I wouldn't break off and have my own dojo, but its good to know that I could, if I had to.) Thank you! It's actually so nice to know that my random little comments are appreciated :D They give me something to do during the editing process, and hopefully bring a little bit of lulz to karate. I saw a quote somewhere that a dojo without laughter is a dead dojo, and I agree. Also have a newish tattoo, covered up a boring-ass tattoo on my left wrist. It's not clear in this video, but maybe in the next ;) Sure, I can never enjoy a Japanese bathhouse, but that's only a couple of weeks in my lifetime. I love my ink, and always plotting for more :3
Zoë here! You are too kind - its actually lots of fun to do videos with my husband, but now that we have a full-time deshi, he's now the crash-test dummy 😂😂😂😂
P.s. I hope that you’ve assumed that I at least watch, and, sincerely LIKE every video your channel puts out, even if I don’t always comment;), yes? I suppose I’m “ pacing myself”;). Cheers!
We appreciate every like! And it is hard to comment on so many videos - we're just grateful to have any comments at all! And the fact that they are 99% supportive is just so lovely - the internet doesn't have to be mean all the time :) Thank you for dropping by, good sir!
Thank you very much for your excellent teaching of sepai applications. You are both excellent and likeable senses and I also appreciate your humour! I would like to ask you: this application, which leads to the arm bar etc is just the one, all senseis show (aahrrg, sorry, my English...), and I think, it's a very good one. But there is never an explanation for the move of the left hand under the right gedan barai arm. Do you think, it could be a solution against a double grip to your chest (eg jacket)? Then it would be: pin the hands with the left, imbalance with the gedan barai on the forearms (and neko ashi), "uchi uke" to the neck, grip and neck crank with the turn. The following turn with kin geri to the head, and perhaps slap (head or groin). Best wishes from Cologne!
Your English is great! Don't apologise - my second language is Afrikaans and I am *barely* literate in it 😅 never mind being able to describe karate techniques in it! Yes, that is definitely a great bunkai - as mentioned in the book _The Way of Kata_ touching yourself in a kata (in this case, under the elbow), usually suggests that you are grabbing onto the attacker. And absolutely, the turn suggests a crank or a throw - I like this blog post about Seipai, because it talks about how the bunkai were made deliberately unclear to mask their true effectiveness: www.jaapkooman.nl/karate/kata/seipai.html We love to hear from you, and we hope Cologne is warmer than Joburg right now! It is a crisp 8 degrees here as I type this ❄ Best wishes, Zo
Great kata and its bunkai demonstration and explanation. More karateka should focus on applications. Techniques and combinations and follow throughs (aikido and jujitsu) are hidden in the kata!
Our katas are so rich in depth and application - it is a great shame to leave them unexcavated. It's so funny when MMA bros come on here and say that karate doesn't have locks or chokes. Shame, their martial understanding is only limited to what they learn from youtube clips.
Sensei Che is so modest when he and Sensei Zoe create such great videos and display some very orthodox Bunkai that reflect the core ideas of the Goju System! Seipai is a kata that emphasizes on round movement (like Tai-Sabaki), flow, unbalancing the opponent and cutting into the opponent's defence at an angle - so breaking the line is totally in keeping with the philosophy behind this kata. I remember Morio Sensei describing it as hard hidden in soft, the ending of one movement leads smoothly into the beginning of the next, one's energy blends with the opponent's power and diverts it back against the opponent (or something to that effect - it was a long time ago when I heard him say this). In the opening move, IOGKF emphasizes on the left-hand doing a small circular movement (like in toraguchi/mawashi-uke) - which can mean a breaking-free and counter-grab movement. Btw, Sensei Che always shows Shiko-Dachi as using one's own weight to drag the opponent down or enhance the power of his strikes - the way, IMHO, it's supposed to be done. At 2:08 I like how Sensei Che's left-hand groin slap starting from side of the thigh - that's a little detail (starting from the thigh) which Morio Higaonna Sensei emphasized that we should do in the Kata itself. At 6:31 We did a similar bunkai, except we retain the grip on the opponent's arm with our right hand while the left elbow does the digging in, taking down etc and if that didn't work - there's the follow-up uraken. 9:06-9:08 is one of those classical bunkai that's so wonderful about Seipai because it leaves your opponent in such a fix, right after he thought he escaped the first arm-lock. Glad to see it being demonstrated here. 9:10 after that groin slap, if the left hand maintains the arm lock while the right hand moves up to push the chin, as you slide forward, your right leg goes behind his right leg, your hip against his hip, you would be able to unbalance and throw him by the chin, while he's in an armlock....a little dangerous, I know, b (this may break his arm, according to my late Sensei) but it conforms with the flow of the kata.....also, at 9:06-9:07-9:08 as you bring your arm up, there's a little elbow to the chin which I think Taira Sensei used to do, elbow the chin then continue to lock the arm - nasty nice. Sensei Che's final comments are so true - in our organization this is also a San Dan grading kata - it's easy to just ape the movements from a lower level, but to develop the power and agility, as well as skill to execute the basic bunkai effectively, will definitely require solid Nidan foundations or more. Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed watching good karate and solid Bunkai (none of the fancy flighty stuff here) ! And the UKE as well as video editor deserves all the praises too, as those comments you added made the video entertaining in a good way.
Ah, but your comments have made our channel so worth it! Look at the wisdom just in this mini-essay - always a delight to learn so much! This kata definitely is more whirly and whippy compared to the others, and as a woman practitioner, an absolute delight to do (when it comes right, of course!) Sensei Higaonna is definitely right to say that the hard is hidden in the soft - it looks soft and flowy, but only to the observer. I love the close-range, and like you say, nasty nice bunkai. Like Kururunfa, a beautiful kata with a violent streak a mile wide (like all good kata!) We appreciate that so many of our adult beginners take the time to watch each video, but it is so important to remind them that they must not be disheartened if these moves seem impossible. Can't go from making cupcakes to macaroons without a lot of practice and new skills! And it takes time to be comfortable with falling. Having started with Judo when I was little, and then doing Aikido in my immortal twenties made it very easy to take falls in Goju. Luckily, my first Goju Ryu dojo had strong ties with the Aikido club and vice versa, so we often looked for the throws we knew were in the kata. (It was also a Jundokan Sho Hombu dojo, though under a different aegis to the one Ché was under before we met). That armlock throw does sound brutal, and absolutely would snap an arm - but well worth knowing anyway! We teach very sanitised karate to the kids, so that they get the important emotional and social benefits, but there's a reason why we don't let them learn these kata and these bunkai until much, much later. (I really wish they wouldn't learn high grade kata for tournament - it makes the kata look cheap, and like dances. We wouldn't let kids drink whiskey, so why would we let them do higher grade, intentionally brutal kata and bunkai? ) This turned into an essay quite by accident! But for once I am responding from my laptop rather than the app, and it's lovely to read and respond properly. It's the least we can do to thank you for the time you take to time-stamp your feedback! Take care, and thank you for the wisdom you so freely share with us 🌺
Bunkai ok. Remember when your partner is grabbed and you kick it is not necesary an usual maegueri. You can use kinteki geri with any part of your leg. To his groin. But ok.
Like the title says, this is just the basic bunkai to build up a better understanding 😊 I've always enjoyed defending against lapel grabs, but generally an attacker won't waste both hands grabbing the jacket 🤣 And as a woman, there are often times when attackers will grab a wrist - not a common attack for men, but definitely for women, either to drag her away or pull her closer. Hair pulls as well, but we hope to tackle that video one day! Thank you so much for still taking the time to watch and comment, we really do appreciate it 🙇🏻♀️ - Zoë
He might have! I know he's a karate man, and Seipai isn't exclusive to Goju Ryu - it would be cool to see a clip of it somewhere. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you for watching! Back to basics next week - anything in particular you'd like us to film?
What about some basics on how to get out off grips. Like neck hold, arm hold.... How to get out of them
It would be awesome to see the basics on break falls, throws, take downs...Like Judo, but with a Guju Ryu flare. 😃
God bless you more ❤

He might have! I know he's a karate man, and Seipai isn't exclusive to Goju Ryu - it would be cool to see a clip of it somewhere. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you for taking the time to send feedback, and for watching and commenting
