I had replied back on one of your brake caliper video, about a guy who stuck the same engine TWICE… but anyway, I sent a single cylinder 4 valve 4 stroke out to Louisiana, took a 232cc motor out to 330cc ( I did HUNDREDS of these). I always included break in oil, extra oil filters and spare carburetor jets. I get a call …. This thing will NOT start. They weren’t upset, just bamboozled I believe. They asked about changing carb jets, I tell them that motor will start with the jets I put in their carb, hold off on that. J as if they have any rags, t-shirts or whatever in the airbox. Nope-took’em out. We go back and forth all day. They got spark, they’ve got fuel… I tell them… take a break get away from it, go get dinner, anything and start fresh. I get a call the next day… motor runs, runs great…. There was an extra rag in the tube between the airbox and carburetor.
I operate my own tilt tray tow truck or what you call a roll back here in Australia and I always have plastic bags, electrical tape and cable ties in case I need to seal up an air filter, distributor etc from the rain. It’s commonsense and it’s things like that that my customers appreciate. It doesn’t take an Einstein to do the job right, just some care and respect. Cheers from Aus 👍🇦🇺🇺🇸
Man that's crazy. When I first started racing back at Myrtle Beach, we had an open trailer. I put a trash bag over the breather (under the hood) just in case it rained on the way to the track one day. When I went out for open practice the car wouldn't run for crap and finally died. I forgot to take the bag off 😬
Great video found you about a week ago love your technical knowledge and these stories. To put faith that other people will do what they say and their job most of the time you will be severely disappointed I've learned that. I've been in the large horsepower industrial diesel market for 25 plus years From marine propulsion to generator sets. Working in field service for 15 years and travel all over the world seeing some really crazy things that supposed technicians have screwed up and will never admit to. The things they do to try to cover it up but dealing in big engines it's big money. Seen quite a few people lose their job because of things I found that's not what I wanted to happen. Most of the time they would never fess up to what mistakes were made and how to prevent it again. Learned a long time ago you'll never know everything and you need to stay humble. We are all human we all make mistakes and when you do own it and learn from it.

I know exactly what you’re talking about! I worked in a machine shop for 10 years and there were times I had to run customers out of the shop. All they wanted to do was hangout. Or you get the ones that come in with their dream build and you go through a build plan and they don’t buy or get started on a project because they’re not serious. Time is money! And a lot of people don’t seem to understand that. And yes, you should always add the babysitter charge to the bill. I never thought I’d become an engine machinist/ therapist all in one package. I learned how to distinguish between the ones that have the experience and the ones that needed to stick with a set of GT40 cylinder heads, E303 camshaft, headers, and4:10 gears.

I am a hobby mechanic, build my own engines, I love oldsmobile, have a 455 I have owned sence I was 18 years old, I am 49 now, painful story, definitely lacking on the tow truck driver, hard to build for others for sure, for this very reason I only do my own engines.

I have been asked to build other people's engines & if I ever have anyone actually serious enuf to have actual money I might? But I know over the yrs I made so many mistakes just tuning! And I have hurt my own engines! But I didn't know what I didn't know! Now I have alot of success with my own stuff but thinking about the mistakes I made, what mistakes will my buddies make & then say I didnt build it right?? Or what if I do make a mistake?? I can't afford to buy all the parts to re rebuild their engine if something goes wrong! I can only imagine what it must be like with some people?? With some im sure u just have to put ur business hat on & say, NO, I can't warranty this! I can't pay for anymore stupid! Maybey not call them stupid but that would have to be the stance with some people?
This one hit me close to home. I was in Auto Mechanics and Auto Body for a Year each and I took night school in Auto Mechanics for my certifications for ASE. I had a friend with a 442, a 66 4 speed 400 2 dr post. He wanted a 455 after killing the 400. This should have been the red light. I told him that the 400 held the NHRA C/S and C/SA class hostage for until the 428 CJ came out, and they refactored held C into the 1990s with the 400 Oldsmobile 442 nipping at their heels. But he had to have a 455. So I found a good core, built it basically the same way, it had the steel good crank and 7 inch rods good heads and the intake and spacers to put a Holley and headers, 3, inch pipes and the M22 with a Steel bell. I explained to him that this is not a 400 like his original 3.975 or like a 350. I asked him to limit it to 5200-5500 since that was all the power it would make. The nod, which should have been a warning, Three weeks later it was in the driveway with the motor out. His dad was there and I asked him what happened. He showed me the paved alley and it solid black stripes. He said he would go out there and just melt the tires. I asked why the motor was out and his buddy bragged that he could down shift at 35 mph and destroy the tires and he saw the tach hit 7000 rpm many times. But it just quit and locked up when he let off at 7000 and a rod went through the side and ripped a gash in the block. So he was selling it with out an engine, with the original 400 on a pallet. His dad paid me off, but the guy never talked to me again,but blamed me for it throwing it rod. The only stupid thing I did was take the job. That was all. It was a pavement ripping beast that if kept below 5800 and never decelerated could have easily ran 10 years. He never blamed me to my face, but yapped trash behind my back.That is how your reputation is ruined. I hate that a lazy truck driver did that to you.
A cam with high 250 durations , and he complained about the cam being to big lol. I daily an isky 262 in a c10 single pattern though which makes more vacuum.
I agree it wasn't your fault but hopefully lesson learned, I put 0 faith in anybody to do what they say or are supposed to do. Me personally I woulda made sure it was water tite before it left, but I also have the benefit of being a Monday morning quarterback over here 😂😂😂😂😂 don't feel bad, my life is full of similar stories and lessons learned brother
Always have video of final product before it leaves your shop bro, even video your conversation with said tow truck drivers when u ask them to cover shit up, have proof you did right thing, always someone else being lazy will ruin your reputation..
lets start it when it full of water lol i mean WTF and the tow truck driver well not bright at all.hence why i hate open hoods but do get it. the 10k or 8k mile oil change that one people buy into and it killing engines daily
Gotta disagree; no way would I entrust the engine I built going third party back to my customer without proper packaging. Had the storm not been something you were aware was coming, no issue, however you warned the tow hauler and left it to him...his job is to load, unload and drive.
I don't disagree with you at all except for the fact this man was in a hurry to leave and promise me he would do it he had just drove down 6 hours to pick the car up and wanted to turn around and head back he gave me his word so like most normal people I took him at his word. Well how much was the difference for a roller after heads and build like that ? Old 98 with 455 came with a 400 had one .
