- Pakistan is starting a second phase of a controversial plan to deport hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees living in the country.
Over half a million undocumented Afghan nationals have been expelled since last October.
The government is extending its deportation plan - to include many Afghans who hold Pakistani documents.
Many Afghans in Pakistan say they're heartbroken at being forced to leave a place they call home.
Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder reports from Landi Kotal in Pakistan, on the border with Afghanistan.

Pakistan stopped registering Afghans in 2007. There was no way for them to register as refugees even though the UNHCR operates in PAK. In 2021, after the Taliban took over AFG, PAK offered some ID documents to the new arrivals, some 600 to 800K. The majority of the Afghans in PAK have lived there for decades and most, especially after 2007, have not been permitted to register as refugees by the PAK govt. Nonetheless, even if they have registration documents, PAK is forcefully returning them to AFG anyway - even the registered ones. PAK is also taking all of their property, vehicles, animals and only allowing them to take $170. In addition, PAK is collecting $830 per person in exit fees from the Afghans. (You can look this up; everything is factual)
The issue is not PAK returning the refugees; PAK is a sovereign country and can do so, and luckily Afghans now have a peaceful country they can return to. The issue is the inhumane and un-Islamic way PAK is implementing this return and robbing the refugees as they leave, while the Pakistani police beat and jail Afghans, separate families, and commit many other atrocities during this process.
If average Pakistanis would know all the details of how this forced return is being implemented, they would be ashamed of their govt just as many Americans now are ashamed of their govt supporting a genocide.
Being Pakistani the people around me and I are also angry for this forced deportation.

Im sorry to the afghans who were deported wrongfully after living here. But pakistan government sucks im pretty sure afghanistan is doing better than pakistan now economically anyway. Besides the government doesn't even care about its own citizens so i didnt have any high hopes for refugees. Inshallah those that moved can quickly settle back and improve their living standards.
