I've never gotten close enough to Daddy to smell his skunky smell. There is only ONE un-neutered adult male mouse in my house. As you told me previously, I have a family of wild mice and I feed them and give them fresh water and they keep all the other mice out. Oh, and Momma is STILL alive. I met her last September and she's still going strong. I think feeding them really well will extend her life, at least I hope so. She's one beautiful adult female wild mouse. She is getting some white around her eyes and face. I know she's getting up there but all I can do is give her the best life and the best food!
I have heard from people who keep wild house mice as pets that the males do not smell, only domesticated male mice do. Wild deer mice males also do not smell. Glad you are enjoying your little ones :)
@@CreekValleyCritters I've never had an issue with Daddy smelling. You know, he reminds me of my late grandfather in his adoration of his wife. I love watching him watch her eat. He always lets her eat first.
I adore the way they like their cuddles xxx it is a lot of work but so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️ It would be hard to cope with their short lifespans. I have to say that Midas is a little gem ❤️❤️❤️
Wow, I've never heard of contraceptol!! This is excellent, because we have far too many wild mousies in our area and my dad is intent on killing every last one. He seems iffy about this but we can try it! Hopefully it works so no poor mice have to die.
I had mice in a 20-gallon long tank that had a sliding mesh lid on top. One time, I was trying to shut the lid, and accidentally closed it on one of my girls' snouts. I WAS SO UPSET SHE SQUEAKED SO PAINFULLY AND I JUST WANTED TO APOLOGIZE TO HER i felt like the worst mouse owner ever ahhhhh
I really hope that the Conntraceptol works. I have some deer mice that keep breaking into my basement. I have a humane bucket trap that I made that works great but the problem I have are the babies that get left behind without their mother :( It’s good to know that the infertile mice will chase away new mice. I absolutely love your mousery. It must be so nice to be in there and just lose yourself in their little worlds. They appear to accept you as part of their little families. So cute!
I live in a very remote part of the world and the only mice available are the feeder mice from the local pet store. These are often very sickly and I feel uncomfortable giving my money to feeder mouse breeders who take such terrible care of their mice. For me breeding my own is more ethical and makes more sense right now. I also had a knowledge gap since I had resisted breeding for so long. I have learned a ton in the three years I have been breeding my own. I have heard that the pet store has switched breeders and the new mice they are bringing in are friendlier and healthier. I need to check this out, if this is true then I can scale back breeding my own. I do have a bit too many mice right now, a side effect of breeding your own.
@@CreekValleyCritters I see. Where do you live? I'm sure is one of those places where they're only a product more than they are considered like living beautiful creatures. So you love them so much that you can't get enough of them hahaha. I'm glad. All their encloser are absolutely amazing. And I was surprised to see them living in big groups, good for you. I loved the golden satin ones, they have such a shinny soft hair. Congratulations
No, because they only very rarely ever do. To be extra safe, I have made the mouse room 100% mouse proof, so if anyone were to jump, it would be easy to find and catch them. When it comes to falling, mice are a little like cats, they rarely ever get hurt. I find that the benefits of keeping mice like this far outweighs the risks.
Cool love this idea will have to look into this to control the mice around the bird stand as they are increased in size and as I rescue them from the cats lol I have do something and if this works there that be great 😸😸
Im ordering a similar bur lightly larger terrarium. We have a cat whos an ex feral so a good hunter and we have decided these will be best! It was great to see your setup. Do they really stink that bad?? 😂
I love the work you do. BUT. YOU SAY. THeY stink Maybe the bedding is the wrong type wood, hemp are good safe types and good odour control. And you might not be spot cleaning as often as you should Also I love everything you do keep it up. I’m only saying this as I have a mouse that I cant have neutered but he lives a very happy life Thought you might put some people off by saying they stink when it not them. Is the care they receive. 😇
Male mice vary with how much they smell, some smell hardly any more than females, others smell like tiny skunks who are spraying ALL the time lol, and then everything in between. You are just lucky to have one of the non-stinky ones. With the stinky ones, no matter what bedding you use, no matter how much you clean, the stink is something to be believed. People need to know this before they get a male mouse so there are no surprises. I always recommend that if you plan on getting a male mouse, have a vet lined up and a bit of money saved just in case you HAVE to have him neutered, so you and other family members can live in a stink free home. The worst stinker I ever had was little Winnie. He was a wonderful mouse but he made the whole house smell like a skunk had just sprayed. It is amazing how much stink was produced by that tiny body :) Neutering always fixes this issue.
CreekValleyCritters Can't you move him in with Amara, Faye & Midas? :'( 5:53 It'd be safer to try it now when he's still a baby & more chance of it being successful than when he's bigger. Because of Male rivalry you know. (Or more specifically Midas's jealousy :'D) I mean when He's neutered obviously. I thought he'd already been done. Will He be done soon? I haven't forgotten you by the way. I hoped to send everything out in time for Christmas but it was just too crazy here. There's a few more little things I want to get anyway. It'll be this Month for sure though. :)
You are referring to Charlie? Sadly male mice are fertile at 4 weeks of age and you cannot get them neutered until they are older and maturer. Even if he were neutered, I do not think Midas would accept him. Midas is very picky about the females he is willing to live with, I don't think he would ever accept another male, even if neutered.
Have you ever noticed any of your girls smelling like skunk? I recently got 3 females from a breeder and two turned out to be pregnant. Im having fun getting to watch them grow, but Im starting to worry now... My older girls do not smell like skunk at all Ive tried looking a few times and her genitals are closer together than one of my moms(whos bits are further apart than usual i think), and shes too wiggly/fluffy to see if she has nipples. Ive tried observing for balls but no luck in seeing any... I may just be overreacting ofc....
Separate the one you are not sure of, who smells like a skunk, immediately from the others. Sometimes young males are hard to tell since they pull their testicles into their body cavity more than older mice do. If his/her new cage smells like a skunk after a day or two, you know this mouse is the one responsible for the smell. Sometimes if there are a lot of dominance struggles and fighting in a female colony, one or more will start marking territory and smell almost as badly as a male, but usually if you smell skunk, you have a male.
@@CreekValleyCritters I asked someone in a group for their opinions and they said shes a girl thankfully. They mentioned that boys dont have a line connecting their genitals and she does(mentioning this in case you have a different opinion). What sizes are the terrariums you use? I would like to get one but not sure which size is best.
With mice bigger is always better. My terrariums are around 2 feet by 1.5 feet, a bit small but as temporary overspill cages they work well.
