Out of all the movies that have been released in 2019, Midsommar is the one that has stuck with me the most. It is such a visceral experience that has a surprising amount of humor and beautiful moments. What shocked me the most was how it was able to blend horror and empathy, which is why I set out to make this video.
Disclaimer: Some of the footage used is from the director's cut of Midsommar.
"Several friends travel to Sweden to study as anthropologists a summer festival that is held every ninety years in the remote hometown of one of them. What begins as a dream vacation in a place where the sun never sets, gradually turns into a dark nightmare as the mysterious inhabitants invite them to participate in their disturbing festive activities."
None of the footage or music used in this video belongs to me.

    From Reddit:
While Dani's family seemed to have died in a murder-suicide, what if it was actually a setup? Next to her parents' bed is a crown of flowers, and there are similar yellow flowers on their wallpaper too, a mysterious bit of foreshadowing. What if Pelle killed Dani's family to trigger the series of events that led her to the festival? He does emphasize that he was most looking forward to Dani coming along on the trip, more than anyone else.
Whether or not Dani was chosen by Pelle, there are some other hints that she was always a perfect candidate for May Queen.
One is her birthday, which Pelle is well aware coincides with the beginning of the festival. Dani's in her mid-20s, which is significant because, as Pelle explains, his community thinks of one's life in terms of seasons. The first 16 years of life are equivalent to one season, spring. Dani is midway through the next season, summer, so literally midsummer.

Ari Aster is a director who has a high attention to detail, and I love that he puts all these easter eggs in his movies (see if you can find anything in the trees when you rewatch Midsommar). Then again, I think the crown at the beginning was just a fun way to foreshadow the ending, like the painting of the bear above Dani's bed. I don't think Pelle killed her family because her parents are in Minnesota while the rest of them live in New York. It wouldn't really make sense.
When Pelle says that he was most looking forward to Dani coming, I DO think he believes that she's an ideal candidate for the cult. However, he seems like he's doing all of this because he actually wants to help Dani and show her what it's like to have a "family." Cults work because the people in them don't realize they're brainwashed and truly believe that what they're doing is good.
Also, I never thought about Dani being midway through her next season, good catch!

Ari Aster has debunked this theory, but it's fun to think about nonetheless!

another thing about josh: despite his general lack of regard for dani's feelings, like how he acted in his apartment, there was one other thing that bothered me. he knew what the attestutpa (or however you spell it) was, and didn't warn anyone. he would've lost nothing if he had warned someone who had just lost her family to a tragic murder-suicide about what the cliff was for, but like you said, he was too concerned with his thesis to care. he had all night and all morning to let her know, but he didn't. there would've been no impact to his thesis if she wasn't there witnessing it, since she isn't part of the tradition. it's not just christian- pretty much no one shows dani any empathy until she gets to the cult besides pelle.

I got the feeling that he didn't warn them because he didn't want to risk all of them freaking out and wanting to leave. He could have lost the opportunity to improve his thesis, which is obviously more important to him than everyone's feelings, like you said.

And even Pelle is only manipulating her, even more than Christian.

What was going through your mind when Midsommar ended?

If Dani lets Christian live, it's likely the cult kills them both. So, I believe in those moments of decision, she ultimately chose the lesser of two evils, and to protect herself; at least she gets to live. At that point, she is not considering the cult her new family, but more as her captors. It's like taking Stockholm Syndrome to a whole different level! And, the smile she gives at the very end is her giving into her captors, and literally going insane.
Here is the last line from the script that reinforces what i'm saying:
A SMILE finally breaks onto Dani’s face. She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely, and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful.

@@__ZANE__ I like how ambiguous the ending is in that we don't know how much the drugs have taken over Dani. I see the ending more as Dani finally snapping and sentencing Christian to die based on her visceral reaction to everything. I do like your interpretation as well!

Nice. I had the same reaction as you the first time i saw the theatrical version. I thought she just decided to kill him out of a drug induced spite. That's the reaction Ari Aster said he hoped people would have initially. And, then after thinking about it, he said people might reach a different conclusion. After i read the script, and saw the director's cut, I realized that while Dani appreciated the emotional support from the cult, that she is no murder. Also, i've done many very high doses of a wide variety of really strong psychedelics, and at no point did i ever feel so out of control that I would choose to murder someone. If anything, your senses and emotional awareness are heightened. You can see the anguish in Dani's face as she makes the decision to choose Christian. She is in tears, and doesn't really want to be a murderer. Then, at the very end, you see her face change to that Joker type smile. Due to realizing she is now a murdering cult member as well, she goes psycho, and is no longer herself no doubt. :-)

She's fucked. I hope she manages to escape somehow.
