Gearbox: "I won't."
Gearbox: *Misses*
Can you really call a massive success a miss? Lol
@@theendofit The PC version wasn't a massive success, did you even watch the video?
@@LordVader1094 it's still heavly being played today and sold very well. It was also very stable (it does not crash easily) for a port. So much so that's the main reason it was used for the anaversary version. Yes it looks worse but it was still a success by all actuall measurable standards.
@@theendofit Being played often because it's the only version available does not mean it was a success on a technical level. It literally explains in the video that the only reason it's used in the anniversary version is because it has working online multiplayer. So no, it's not a success by all actual measurable standards. It succeeded in one thing and one thing only: workable multiplayer. In all other ways, it fails.
@@LordVader1094 ok whell im pretty sure every game company ever would be happy to have fails like halo ce as it still sold amazingly and is still being played despite there being 2 billion other games that pepole could be playing yet still has enough fans that think its worth playing.
if it was truly as bad as you are making it out to be most pepole would have left it. its still great its just not as great as it could have been. all things considered this are all minor issues in the long run.
and no the reason they used the ce verison over the orginal was not because of the multiplayer.
the main reason why is becuase the main work of porting it onto other hardware was already done they had made it so it could more easily be run on anything. the xbox orginal verison could only run on an xbox. why start from scratch and have to do a massive amount of work just to try to re due whats already done. you might as well remake the game if thats your mentality.
second while the orginal did not have online it had system link wich is reltivly easy to turn into an online mode all the ground work for making halo online was in there at launch as they planed it to be online but had to cut it late as xbox live was no where near ready. so it would not be a factor in decideding witch version to build off of.

Yeah
Same with everything from bungie lol. The art in their games is EXTREMELY inviting and i miss the more realistic\cod esque look halo used to have. Thats what really made halo stand out imo but everything from 343 including their remasters completely butchers it.
And dont tell me that infinite does exactly that cause while they got the feels right (which even then i still think martys work is far cooler) the art and visuals are DEFINITELY not on par, its like a kid did those lol. bungie still takes the cake in those aspects without question.

The music overall for the remasters has generally sucked IMO. I at least appreciate that in CE Anniversary I can choose the pretty graphics *and* the old music, unlike Halo 2 in the MCC.

The first time i saw the jackal shields on anniversary i knew something wasn't right. They were fascinating and stunning as a kid. I thought they purposedly made them look bad to make you play on anniversary graphics, to make you buy halo 2 anniversary.
Also on pc you can't see yellow jackals wich are much stronger than the blue ones in certain difficulties.
@@chocchip4172 it still doesn't make it a beautiful game. halo ce had terrible, repetitive level design mostly composed of boring copy-paste corridors. Halo 2 looked like a generation leap. It looked miles better and the real time cutscenes were jaw-dropping stuff back then. and quite honestly, it was also a massively better game overall, not just visually.
Aaron Weir i thought the same too he blew my mind, I played the original on Xbox 15 Years ago... and the one on Xbox one the master chief collection always looked weird, that it’s so flat and basic and some game from the 1990’s in classic
I KNEW Cortana changed colors in the original and when I replayed it in the remastered version I had like a Mandela effect thing happen omg
Are you sure that's what the "Mandella Effect" really does? Because I really can't remember the exact meaning, but I think that's the wrong expression.
@@Pathetic_Dart The Mandela effect is (as it originated) a phenomenon where a large amount of people collectively remember something specific in one particular way, contrary to how it actualy was. Its namesake being that a large number of people remembered that Nelson Mandela died in prison, when in fact he didn't. Which is strange, concidering how high profile of a person he was. This in turned birthed crazy theories of people unknowingly getting moved over to a parallel universe where the world ended up different in a slightly minute way, or something of that nature..
He remembered something in contrary to what reality seemed to be, so he is not wrong in that he thought that he was experiencing the Mandela effect, when in fact the thing he was playing that was marketed as the "definitive" version of that thing, was actually just a mistake made in a poor port of the thing...

😭 Yep still broken
Can confirm. What a disgraceful butchering of a classic.
I'm disgusted. I only play on original graphics as well. The updated graphics are interesting and well done, but they are NOT a REMASTER; they are a RE-IMAGINING. Many levels look completely unrecognizable from the original. The most obvious level to see this on is Truth and Reconciliation. The first part of the level is in a desert-like area in the original graphics; the "remastered" graphics make it into a lush forest/jungle area. The same goes for Halo 2 "remastered" graphics. So many of the iconic locales look NOTHING like the original version other than having the same basic geometry.
John Graham Doe Woah, I actually really loved Halo 2 anniversary graphics so much more than CE’s ugly anniversary graphics. I have to disagree there.
@@psychotictrait3757 I'm not saying they don't look good, I'm just saying that they don't look like the originals. For example, High Charity does not look at all like the original version. A lot of the colors are completely changed, going from more of a dark magenta to a true purple. Some of the background geometry is also completely changed.
It definitely looks good, but it is NOT a remaster. Remastering would be updating the old graphics but maintaining the same style and design. Instead, they completely reimagined the original (usually making changes that cause the games to look more in-sync with future Halo titles).
The remasters do look good, but they just stray too far from the originals for me in a lot of areas.
John Graham Doe again, I have to disagree. Halo 2A was pretty much the only modern artstyle I loved because it retained a lot of the classic designs but modernized them. Halo CEA anniversary was ugly and tried going for a more Reach look. But everything was so fucking ugly, Espeically Chief’s hunchback of Nortedam armor anniversary armor. New Mombasa actually looks to par with ODSTs interpretation of it.

We must make this relevant. Halo CE doesn’t deserve this, if they’re not remaking CE from the ground up for its 20 year anniversary I’ll revolt. 12 teraflops next gen and all this talk about power and speed so they better fucking fix the game that got them where they are.
In my opinion they would be milking CE too much already, and that would delay even more the development of MCC for the PC not to mention Infinite.
Fantasma CSTRP Halo CE got Xbox and Halo where they are and Halo CE Anniversary was a Halo Reach retexture of Gearbox Software's terrible Halo CE PC port.. Combat Evolved deserves a proper remake from the ground up for it's 20th year anniversary and they need to fix classic CE's graphics. They could add forge, theater, online multiplayer, firefight I suppose and make it a full new version of the classic or just stick to the original completely and charge less with no new features. It's an option, nobody NEEDS to buy it and it would be the right thing to do for the game that started it all for the fans that were there from the beginning.

*THEY ARE AWARE AND WORKING ON IT*
For MCC they use the Gearbox PC-Port code as a base. And this version has A LOT of flaws/bugs/missing when it comes to visual fidelity. Since ~ October 2018, they are diffing the original Xbox PC and MCC Version assets and codes to fix what got lost in translation. It has by no means been forgotten. Also, in regards to the shader issues stemming seemingly from one little tiny mistake, keep in mind that Gearbox also fucked up the Alien AI in Colonial Marines *the exact same damned way.*
ban gearbox
slightlyoutofreach01 I heard there’s a line of code that could fix that. Read it somewhere online years ago.
Its not necessarily outright Gearboxes fault, because the people who did the initial mistake were the ones who it was outsourced to.
Gearbox paid them pennies and their time window was strict, so obviously they never had the time to even attempt to fix it, and Gearbox themselves probably didnt care enough.
Their only good game series is Borderlands and they stole that idea from a guy named Ben Hibon. Borderlands only came out they way it did due to Code Hunters.
If you haven't already, go download the Templar GFX Overhaul for Colonial Marines. It changes graphics settings to make the game much darker and have a creepier feel similar to the E3 trailer, plus (and most importantly) it overhauls the Xeno AI so that it hunts in the shadows and will rush you when you're not looking making the game MUCH more intense and fun to play. A friend and I still play online co-op together and the mod works for that too if you both have it.

I always thought I noticed some serious differences between the original and MCC, especially with the energy shield and hangar shield effects but never thought anything of it until now, thinking it was because the original graphics weren't made for new systems and therefore causing issues.
Edit: I suppose I shouldn't be surprised considering Gearbox's track record of broken messes
Hello there
You can see how far Gearbox is in terms of poor quality even back then.
It's not MCC.
it's the Halo PC version that Gearbox made. 343 industries had nothing to deal with it.

Hey LNG! With the release of MCC's Halo CE on PC, have you considered doing a follow up to this? I can't help feel like this is really relevant to the flighting of HCE!

This cleared up so many questions I've had. I played OG Halo on Xbox in 2002-2003, and I was always struck by how colorful and lively the world around me was. Recently picked up MCC on the Steam sale and played through it for the first time since. I kept telling myself that the game was old, but I couldn't help but feel something nagging at me that something was wrong.
I really hope they can restore Halo to its original. I remember it looking so beautiful, and anniversary Classic felt a little off. Now I know why, Thank you
Glad I have the og game now
I always remembered Combat Evolved looking better in my memory, at first I thought it was my nostalgia but now I see I wasn't crazy.
Saul Muratalla I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I knew that something was wrong when all crew members wears grey instead of blue and yellow. I’m glad i still have the original version and plays on 360.
This video lied, only MCC's version is downgraded.
I always thought that too! - On another note I always loved looking up to the sky and seeing the other ‘side’ of the halo ring - it made me think where are we going next, what structures there are, what do the landmasses look like closer up. I hated that in the CE:A version the put all that sky in - the weather looked good, but blocked the view of the whole ring, I don’t know if that’s what Bungie wanted to do all along or not... but it took the wonder of it all out for me. (Don’t know if that makes sense?)
C. Phillips Yeah, it’s the very reason i fell in love with this game was seeing the ring go up and around, the atmosphere makes since. Xbox version must of had an update because my blue red guys are around now. So I’m doing a all nighter 🤠
What about how in the OG PC Port Jackal Shields were a single turquoise colour regardless of rank, instead of blue and yellow-orange for Minors and Majors respectively.
i was only aware of the jackal shield and ground shield issue, i did not know it was this big
I've got to say it. You really have to admire the respect and dedication that this man has for his craft.
He'll take you on a nostalgia trip, while educating you throughout the video. I didn't know what Bump Mapping was until today.
Next lesson: normal maps! :-)

This just confirms im not halucinating. Thanks for making people aware of this, cause the first halo looked really good for being such an old game
Halocinating.
If you still have the OG Xbox and it still works you should look into removing the clock capacitor so that it doesn't damage it.
@@Ratich never heard about any issues with the OG Xbox, or are you thinking about the RROD on 360?
@@Eowen129 Nope I am talking about the OG Xbox basically there is a capacitor on the motherboard of the OG Xbox that stores time that capacitor starts leaking acid after a while and that acid can damage the motherboard so you may want to get that remove and maybe check of the HDD is failing.
I mean that's nostalgia for you.
Halo 1 was certainly a beautiful game in 2001, but even the original nowadays looks like crap visually. Certainly impressive for its time (which is where the nostalgia comes from,) but hasn't exactly aged gracefully.
The Pale Horse soundtrack doesn't play when the door opens to the flood bridge on Two Betrayals. There's many areas in the game that are missing the music ques. :(
You opened my eyes man and I grew up with every halo and the first one has always had a special place I had no idea it makes me wanna just buy and original copy and see if it’s backwards compatible instead of playing mcc
So essentially, Gearbugs added Skyrim waterfalls to CE. That's an impressive level of shit.
Gearbox: Halo machine broke
343: Understandable, have a great day
The funniest part about them using it due to its multiplayer capability is that - when Gearbox's port released on PC? The multiplayer was FAMOUSLY busted. The netcode was an absolute mess, and staying connected to a game, or the game not crashing was a rarity for almost a year.
Glad they fixed the issues.
But I wish the classic graphics were used by default instead of the Anniversary ones.
i played CE on pc originally... damn, i thought that was how it always looked.
_THERE GOES MY MEMORIES_
You and me both. I even played a small bit of the Xbox version, I just didn't play long enough to notice.
This video is actually misleading, the original PC version was actually the same as xbox's. He actually never played the original himself and thinks PC's original version is the same as MCC.
@@ashleyjohansson230 this, exactly. This video is flat out wrong.
@microcuts it isn't wrong, he just never specifically states which version he is talking about.
@@ashleyjohansson230 @microcuts The first PC version of Halo CE was made by Gearbox in 2003 and the graphics were noticeably different to me. What are you talking about? I'd also like to add that the original Xbox game renders differently on newer consoles than on the original Xbox.
Better solution. Put Halo on the Backwards Compatibility program so we can just play the original without relying on after-the-fact sub-standard ports.
GENIUS.
I mean, it _kinda_ already is backwards compatible because you can just slap the OG game into your Xbox One and play it normally but, of course, there's no multiplayer beyond system link and split screen
@@littlesnuggle529 What? You can't play the XBOX copy on your X1. At all. The only MP the original Halo even had was System Link and Split Screen, so I have no idea what you are even talking about.
SkyHighGam3r You can still play it on an Xbox 360, well if you have one.
But then they can't make as much money off of that.
Well the pc version of MCC Combat evolved anniversary came out today, I hope to see you cover it!
I just hope 343 fix the audio issue with Reach on MCC.
They probably never will. They knew about it at least 3 months before launch and still have no idea how to fix it because apparently nobody there knows how to make multiple audio layers and adjust volumes individually. I think(?) they raised the volume of the guns a bit but everything else like directional sound is still fucked.

4:50 that seems to be a recurring theme about one line of code blowing a game up with gearbox
Honestly, if it really is literally one single thing causing the problem, that's probably a good thing. Just means that there's only one thing in one place that they have to fix, as opposed to having to debug everything everywhere.
Emertxe well the problem is they don’t fix the one thing, like with aliens colonial marines they had one line of code missing for the aliens and it took someone 4 years to figure out that’s the problem. Unpaid modders are doing the work these people get paid to do professionally
This video made me realize what i was missing out on when i originally played on the gearbox port
For the longest time I thought my memory was wrong with the Jackels shield from when I was a kid in the early 2000s. it wasn’t until I saw a video similar to this a few years ago that I learned that gearbox (a studio which i already hated) botched one of my favorite games ever made

I'd honestly take the much better framerate and online over the very slight improvements the original had
@@7thninjaturtle
As much as I would agree with you that is not the issue, framerate was not an issue back then. Gearbox botched the PC version of graphical fidelity that didn't cost much if any performance. In otherwords, you could have as many frames as you want but it just wont look as good as it could be.
it's 2021 and I just people to know that they've finally fixed these issues addressed in the video.

I would like to say thanks for making this video, *Late Night Gaming.* Your words and the comments of other HALO fans under the video speak many of my frequent thoughts on HALO CE, the Anniversary ports, and even Bungie's passionate care for the Halo series. I have always recognized the love and passion Bungie poured into each of their HALO titles, which I can view in their own universe. Just seeing behind the scenes videos of Bungie describing how their A.I. behaved was a scope into just how much they cared about HALO. From one game to the next, there was this strong consistency mainly with the first three HALO titles. Over a long passing of time, I was able to experience how themes of sound effects, body physics, visual art, and music remained familiar to me. Improvements were made through time, but seeing enemies fly through the air while screaming from grenades felt HALO. Hearing the talking of grunts making funny comments felt like HALO. Hearing the sound effects of many weapons that carried over from one title to another felt like the HALO experience. I'm sure you know exactly what I mean... There is just too much to describe what feels like HALO. There is no place like Bungie's HALO...
It all felt like HALO because it carried over the concepts I already knew previously, and these consisted of themes that made HALO great and memorable. Take the elites for example. In Bungie's games, elites have evolved appearances over time from CE, but they still looked and behaved like elites do in battle. They appeared to be noble and brave, and always looked ready for battle. When HALO 2 transitions to HALO 3, I can see how John/Master Chief's mark VI armor remains recognizable. It's just now that it looked more detailed and showed more light reflections. The same goes for the arbiter. He had the same recognizable anatomy and armor design. His body size was not seriously altered and his forehead and face captured the true appearance of a sangheili being.
HALO 3 was like this large expansion from HALO 2. It took almost everything from HALO 2's experience and balanced it with tweaks to create something improved but something very recognizable. This is so important because when I look at how 343 handled HALO 4 and 5, it is quite difficult to accept their complete vision of HALO because it is not the HALO I knew previously. I can understand 343 were trying to be creative with new ideas, but the art design, lore and story just doesn't follow the same detail and overwhelming experiences I had from when Bungie developed HALO games.
I often think about what Bungie's HALO 4 would have done for me. I'd argue that Spartan Assault was the most HALO of a game that 343 developed because it contained a lot of familiar aspects in the gameplay, sound effects, and enemy design.HALO 4 is not a bad game, but the story and lore was not convincing to me based on what I knew previously of HALO lore. The way 343 handled the prometheans as an enemy also felt quite broken. I do not want to go into too much detail on HALO 5, but it has some of the same problems I brought up earlier with "anatomy" designs, story and lore, and the whole experience doesn't feel very HALO anymore. I feel convinced that 343 has literally created their own HALO universe, where previous aspects of the lore are discarded as the games continue forward.
With the colors and hud being restored in season 8 of mcc I had to back to this video again.
I never knew how nostalgic I would feel just to play the game again with the brightness and saturation restored to how it originally was on the og xbox, I'm very grateful that you made this video and spread awareness, I feel like I truly remember this game now!

I did play original Xbox Halo CE nearly 2 decades ago and when I played Halo MCC I hadn't actually thought much of these issues. I played Halo CE A. when it was a stand-alone title in 2011 and then again in around 2015ish-2016 on MCC and hadn't either. Why hadn't I realized it when you made it seem so easy in one video then I did in 10 years is beyond me. You're making me miss the old gaming days more and more. I love what the new stuff can do, but I hope the old isn't just erased from time.
