The MA37 is much older than you think. Like the M392 DMR, it's outdated and such in process of being replaced by UNSC forces. The reason why it's used in Reach is because you play as a Spartan III, which isn't apart of the Navy like Spartan IIs. You fall under the Army, and the Troopers you fight along with are Army Troopers. Like the DMR, the Army hasn't adopted the newer weapons like the MA5B or BR55. Just a little lore.
_"The reason why it's used in Reach is because you play as a Spartan III, which isn't apart of the Navy like Spartan IIs."_ Wrong. You were most certainly Navy. You're just attached to the Army because Noble team was tasked with investigating and then commanding ground forces during the defense. Which is the Army's role. Everything else though is correct. Which kinda doesn't make sense if you think about things. Reach is home to the largest and most productive shipyards with a garrison to match. Namely said UNSC Army. But the Army was still using semi-outdated equipment? Then again, shit like this also happens in real life.
Spartans III are from Navy, but almost all equipment in ground are always from Army (In Halo 2 you are deployed with Marines so that's why you don't see any MA37 or M45).

I disagree with the AR. When I think of an assault rifle, I think of something that should kill. It makes sense that it should be equal to precision weapons in time to kill.
It’s funny how when I first saw the MA37 I thought it was like an incomplete and fragile prototype version of the assault rifle. But now it’s one of my favorite versions of the assault rifle to date.
@@narenthebeesechurgerman422 BR doesn't have lower damage. It has a lower DPS (very slightly lower) but the per hit damage is much higher. SMG actually has a higher DPS than the AR in close range. As an OG halo player, the anti automatic shit in Halo 5 is obnoxious. No one used autos in any thing other than Halo 1 in the previous games because they sucked. Now people are complaining that the weapons are balanced in, all with their specific roles? It's stupid af.
Late Night Gaming please explain how they’re not. For example with the at/be/dome balance. The at will dominate Cqc and contest medium. Be will dominate medium but contest all ranges. Some will dominate long but contest medium. That’s exactly how the gameplay works out in halo 5. It’s balanced.
Because they changed it from a weapon that strips shields and can be followed up by a headshot from a precision weapon or a melee to a weapon that can strip shields and kill fast, what’s the point of picking up a plasma pistol if the AR will just strip the shields just as fast, and what’s the point of going in for a melee or a one shot with the pistol if I can just kill it easily once the shields are down, it takes up the spotlight and takes away from other weapons

The AR is my favorite weapon in Halo, it’s 60 round mag was always so awesome to me. The reason we like the Halo 2 A version is because all the weapon sounds in that game are good there is a meaty clear quality to the sounds you can hear the casings hit the floor, and the quality of the sounds is just very solid. Plus having a competently lethal version (my only complaint with the gun generally is that it’s generally not powerful enough). Especially in Halo 2 where the SMG (which always felt so bad to use that I avoided the damn thing like the plague), we are happy to have a weapon that we can use at close to medium range that doesn’t feel like an air soft gun in the full auto tradition. I completely agree with your opinion of the visuals for Halo 5, but I disagree about your opinion of the “lethality problem” of Halo 5. A gun is a weapon, if it can’t be relied on to kill then it shouldn’t be a gun. The problem in Halo 5 is that they didn’t include enough in the utility aspect I agree, but that doesn’t mean that only some guns should be good at killing.
If y'all are wondering which version of Halo 1 he's playing, he's playing Halo Custom Edition with Refined Campaign Maps, basically makes it look almost identical to the original Xbox version which had the better graphics. Gearbox are the ones responsible for porting the game to PC and pretty much fucked up a lotta missing textures and meshes on things like water and the AR missing the scratches.
I think halo 5 really just encapsulates how little 343 currently understands halo, the games were designed around only having 2 guns with different utilities and focus, trying to find the best loadout for a situation with what was available. Making every weapon decent at killing just turns the game into cod with guns that are slightly different but overall perform the same function
Disagree, the assault rifle in halo 5 was the best in my opinion. Sounded the best and decent but not over powered damage and the pistol was a good weapon as well. I mean we see chief ALWAYS using the assault rifle but we almost always had to ditch in halo 3, odst and sometimes halo 4 to grab something better. Halo 5's version is a perfect balance.
@Smugglerscomedy All it got was an accuracy buff when aiming down sights, WHICH I disagree with, HOWEVER it is not correct to say that it is better at range or competitive at range with precision weapons.
The release of the various Halo games on Steam and netcode improvements to H3 on mcc have led to many views I held with this video in need of an update! I’m thinking of revisiting this topic once infinite comes out :)
Personally the Reach AR was my favorite. I always enjoyed that if you paced your shots you would be able to get kills at longer ranges. Overall I'm not a fan of bloom but the AR I felt did it right. In the multiplayer I'd often get into AR duels at ranges where holding the trigger just didn't work but feathering it did. I enjoyed the look and utility, but the sound seemed hollow to me. Loved the Halo 4 AR sounds though. Loved the video man keep up the good work!
Aw man. I quite feel the opposite with the Halo 5 assault rifle. I love it!!!Especially getting headshot across the map while everyone else is using BR or magnums. Pooping single shots. You can say my play style is more of Pro slapstick. It’s just more satisfying for me to kill with an underperforming weapon or the undesirables on the map.
The way I see it, the AR is a good gun that's effective at dealing with multiple targets at close range and landing chip damage on medium range. Halo 5's AR has a damage output that's similar to the BR with the added baggage of higher fire rate and the ability to zoom, which on top of making it much more accurate and easier to control, also allows it to outperform the BR on mid range, and chip enough damage to kill a sniper on long range. I get that the smg tends to outshine the AR in close combat because the AR couldn't hit the broad side of the barn and it has the power of a peashooter which is why I agree with the idea of buffing the AR's damage output and make it viable on close to middle ranges like how it is in Reach so that it has the potential to actually kill someone, but I can't agree with giving it an accuracy boost so high, making the gun so versatile to the point that the other weapons feel redundant. I guess what I'm trying to say is, ADS on all weapons in Halo 5 was a mistake.
I loved the halo 5 AR and sandbox, i dont feel forced to use meta weapons in 5, you can use whatever you feel like using and play fine. I think they really nailed it in 5
To me, the gist of the "complaint" against the AR in 5 is that it's actually viable instead of just a placeholder for a power weapon while whatever flavor precision weapon does the actual work. Frankly, I think the romanticized idea of Halo's weapon sandbox is... crap. People should be able to use whatever gun they want and not be punished for using a "wrong" gun.
@@MrCrunchytime Yep. Everyone should be able to play it how they wish. the comp community can ask for any edit they want for their matches but for most Halos the whole game is based on their ideal sandbox And casual players don't get a choice. 99% of "standard" weapons in Halo are complete garbage against BR/DMR. Or even against the AI. the noob combo is the only viable ranged way to kill anything on Legendary/LASO. Even Power weapons don't work as well as the noob combo in PVE. Sucks the fun out of it somewhat
@@MrCrunchytime Because Halo fans want to feel special. They want to boast that they're sandbox is "unique" when all you need is one rifle to do anything
The opposite side of the argument for why the increased lethality is better for the assault rifle: the ultimate goal of a gun should be to kill an opponent. Guns that don't kill well ultimately results in weapons not getting used in the sandbox, hence BR and DMR dominating in most multiplayer games while Assault Rifles, SMGs, Storm Rifles, and Plasma Rifles are left in the dust
Yeah I just don’t agree. A sandbox where every gun kinda does the same thing is bland to me. Halo can be more expansive than that. Close range ARs shouldn’t be outsniping BRs at a range
@@LateNightHalo and they don't. ARs at that range should be disrupting enemy shooting, not outright killing them. If an AR is killing the BR player at long range, the BR player sucks, plain and simple. I guess this is more of a difference of opinion then. As someone who spends a lot of time in competitive games, killing power is more important than anything else. If the gun has good killing power and a useful utility trait, even better. There is a reason why grenade launchers, sniper rifles, and rocket launchers are the only weapons you really see outside of precision weapons and why everyone wants the Spartan laser and Sniper Rifle in BTB. Plain utility just isn't good enough. In fact, it wasn't until Halo 5 where you really started seeing weapons outside of those categories being used. SAWs, shotguns, railguns, plasma casters, and hydra launchers were all part of HCS until only about a year ago
EDIT: Got a notification for the "loved" comment in the middle of lengthening said comment. Hope you still love it by the time I'm done You decided to put "Assault Rifle" in the title? *F* Props to my man Taras for not forsaking the sacred rifle's good name Anyway, still loving the series. Well, not that you'd know that, but... you do now. A lot of people are still loving it, I'll say that. Personally, I love Halo 4's AR the the most. Halo 3 killed it in the "iconic" design department, but more features of H4's are great, at least for me. The weapon feels good to use, for starters; it's very accurate, but still not that useful beyond close-mid range. It also sounds real punchy, unlike pretty much every other AR besides H2A's multiplayer. Yeah, yeah, HCE has the iconic sound, but that's cos it's old and charming. It is really charming, though. My favorite thing about the Halo 4 AR is, oddly enough, the paint job. It has that sexy nickel-grey finish for its... rail-cover, or whatever, but the idea is that it's non-reflective paint/material. Just like a real-world military would go for. This is also the case for CE and Reach, but they don't resemble that beautiful Halo 3 design as closely as 4 does. Handling, sound, and design. That's all. Funny thing is, I actually really can't stand the Halo 5 AR. I'm sorry, I'm sorry... It just looks and feels like a Nerf gun. Somehow, it feels unwieldy and fat, and it's way to shiny. Like Halo 4, it's waaay too detailed, even for a sci-fi gun. The detail in Halo 4 was at least a little more subtle. I was really excited about the touch of sage when I first saw the design, though. That's just fucking awesome. And, yet again, weirdly insignificant. (I think part of the reason I hate H5's is because of how the weapons are positioned on-screen. The Chief would not hold his gun up to his cheek at all times. Before anyone says, "That's how you aim ya libtard," visors are connected to the weapon, canonically. That's what classic smart-link was supposed to mean, not this bastardized ADS bull. You know that weird lumpy thing on some Halo magnum designs? It's supposed to be a smart-linked scope. THAT's how classic zoom is explained. Sorry, I'm passionate about this.) I could go on, but I'll leave it at that. Far from my favorite weapon, but it's a staple in gaming for a reason. That shit is holy.
I was sad when Halo 2 replaced the AR with the battle rifle. I'm ok with the battle rifle but it's got to be in between the AR and the sniper or something. AR and Magnum should remain the primary combo imo. Other weapons should be specialty.
I think i'm in a very unique position to explain why Reach's Assault Rifle isn't on anyones favorite list. Ever since i played Halo CE back in my childhood, i fell in love with the Assault rifle to the point where i used it the entire game, 90% of my CE legendary runs i never dropped the rifle once. (There is a part where you fight the sentinels in the control room that if you die, respawns you with a plasma pistol instead of your equipped weapon(Also the time i found out sentinels were weak to plasma weapons as i had played the game for years without ever trying)) I also only use human weapons, there is just something so fun about trying to beat all the Halo's with the same arsenal that the marines would use. I kept that trend up in every Halo game i played, always having the assault rifle as one of my weapons even if it was empty. Reach was quite the experience using the assault rifle because every time i shot at something that wasn't a grunt i felt incredibly stupid, it felt like a waste of bullets. And even trying to kill grunts was a chore when you knew you could just use a pistol or the battle rifle that were absurdly better at killing grunts. I mean you even encountered enemies that were unkillable if you used the Assault rifle, while i understand the assault rifle isn't meant to kill like you mentioned but if you were backed up against a wall and all you had was your trusty assault rifle then with enough effort and dedication, you could pull through. In reach that was a fool's effort, especially with how often the game threw unkillable enemies at you. The assault rifle simply wasn't a rifle you could ever rely on unlike how it worked in every other Halo game. A rifle that might not be right for the job, but if you put your trust in it then it could get you through. My best friend in all the Halo games except for reach. Long story short, the game makes you question why you even have it equipped to begin with and that is never a good sign, and take that from someone who had it equipped the entire game, in every game, on legendary.
Notice how every single weapon in Combat Evolved could be considered functionally the best out of every halo game? Although the needler and sniper rifle in halo 3 could be exceptions
1:50 straight up looks like what the assault rifle would look like if 343 designed it from scratch, it looks way to similar to the commando and the bulldog
Since I started playing halo since 2002, I never felt really that LOVE for the AR until just 2 years ago, not onl for the multiplayer, it became my favourite weapon for the campaing. Reliable, strong enough, and preety useful in almost any scenario.
Everyone talks about how halo 4's ar is "too good" and discourages plasma weapons but forget that the halo 3 ar took less shots to break shields than halo 4's ar. Please note I am talking about the campaign, not mp.
The Halo CE assault rifle is what I think of when imagining "vomiting bullets." It's such a consistent hose of munitions, it's sometimes hard to find it satisfying when you weren't even sure the thing you killed was the thing you were aiming at.
I disagree with utility focused weapons being a good thing. It's one thing for a gun to be utility focused in the campaign, but in multiplayer utility guns typically never get used. There's a reason why the BR, DMR and Magnum were pretty much the only 3 guns used in multiplayer outside of power weapons. It leads to a stale and unbalanced weapon meta where 50% of the arsenal sits unused because they can't compete with guns that have headshot multipliers.
The CE assault riffle was the best, I loved the sound design of Halo 4 but I found 60 rounds to be just to good to not earn that spot. In regards to Guardians I’m torn, on the one hand I think that all guns need some amount of kill potential (the ability to kill things is the point of a gun after all otherwise give us equipment from H3) but a gun is more than just its kill potential. Some guns just need to have utility as well, I think 343 over did the kill potential while simultaneously removing the utility of the weapon. In Infinite I would love to see it retain kill potential at mid to close range (with mid being the important part of that statement) while still having utility. I think the best way to accomplish that is to return the 60 round mag. That would make it distinctive from weapons like the SMG which competes at close range being very fast but ammo intensive, and the BR which was a mid to long range weapon that was more effective if you had any accuracy, but wouldn’t have the endurance. The capacity would assuming it had enough kill potential make it a weapon that is designed for long fights or suppression tactics, it would also give it a clear role as a weapon that could handle multiple enemies before being reloaded.
it is a battle rifle after all, i don't understand how unarmored opponents can handle 7.62x51, it's a chainsaw in gun form but grunts can take like 10 of those things before dying. i prefer realism and that being the cartridge screws with my brain. oh and maybe the 60 rounds can be an attachment, a 60 rd drum, though i don't know how people will think of that (it makes sense though, 7.62x51 is not a small bullet, it's around the size of your index finger)
I just realised that he changes the thumbnails every year, I really do respect it, always has good content and always tries his greatest we appreciate you
I always found it weird that the assault rifle was usually a close quarters weapon in halo, kinda fulfilling the role for an smg more than an actual assault rifle. The Scar H rifle irl is very useful in medium to long range, and is quite accurate. Since halo's AR is a bullpup design, that gives it a very long barrel which means it should be able to shoot very straight and very far.
People like me like the halo 4 and 2A ARs because they are the only ARs that kill faster than the BRs and DMRs at close range. Halo 1, 3, 5, and reach ARs have a slower time to kill than the precision weapons.
I totally feel you on the H4 AR being OP when compared to the other AR's in the series, especially in regards to how it "strips shields" faster, therefore pretty much negating the need for a Plasma based weapon, or CE's AR/Melee combo. It's still my favorite though... :) However, I'm eagerly anticipating H4's release on PC, as I am absolutely sure we'll be seeing mods that aim to bring the gameplay/sandbox back in line with that of the Classic Halo titles! Hopefully Vengeful Vadam has some ideas/plans for that, his work on Reach's campaign has been absolutely wonderful, and made Reach much more enjoyable!
It absolutely does not strip shields faster if you play on anything harder than normal. I feel like LNG must have played exclusively on Normal if he's talking about the AR shredding anything other than unshielded grunts and jackals.
You talk about the beauty of halo is that one weapon doesn’t trample the rest of the sandbox, but isn’t that fundamentally wrong? The best weapons in every bungie halo and halo 4 are precision weapons. You have even stated yourself that Bungie intended there to be one weapon or set of weapons in each game that the gameplay is centered around. The only game in the series that truly has no weapon rising above another is halo 5 where weapons are balanced in such a way to where they all have a play in the sandbox. Just my thoughts.
He doesn't know shit. He plays exclusively on normal which is a bad way to measure the guns stats. He's basing his opinion on "feel" rather than objective stats.
I have a theory of why assault rifle wasn’t in halo 2 Maybe while the events of halo 2 where happening maybe they where developing the later version of the assault rifle

they arent balanced in H5. "killing gud" isnt what makes a gun balanced

They were all good at killing, just needed the right situation and application
Rhea Welsh lets hope they get halo infinite
It's really not good at range, idk why people are saying it is too good at range. Just play the game and you can't beat a BR at range.

TerahStarGaming I hated it horrible design and absolutely useless on anything above normal.
honestly, Halo 5's AR wouldn't have been so bad had it not been so goddamn accurate to the point that it could outdo a sniper.
Harith Azmi I think it even would’ve been fine without the weapon tuning update
MajoraZ actually it was already good as a long range weapon in 3 for example when fired in bursts of 1 or 2.
@@wotwott2319 I disagree.
Everyone should be able to play it how they wish. the comp community can ask for any edit they want for their matches but for most Halos the whole game is based on their ideal sandbox
And casual players don't get a choice.
My favorite Halo AR is the MA5D (Halo 4) If controlled well, the weapon recoil wasn't that bad and would sometimes outgun the BR.

*F*
Props to my man Taras for not forsaking the sacred rifle's good name
Anyway, still loving the series.
Sorry, I'm passionate about this.)
I could go on, but I'll leave it at that. Far from my favorite weapon, but it's a staple in gaming for a reason. That shit is holy.
Halo 4's sound interpretation of weapons tends to be my favorite of the series, whether it'd be assault rifle, shotgun, battle rifle, or magnum.
the BR in halo 4 sounds like a fucking Lazer... no it's bad sorry.
I was sad when Halo 2 replaced the AR with the battle rifle. I'm ok with the battle rifle but it's got to be in between the AR and the sniper or something. AR and Magnum should remain the primary combo imo. Other weapons should be specialty.
That's pretty much what the BR and DMR are in halo 5 and 4
I think i'm in a very unique position to explain why Reach's Assault Rifle isn't on anyones favorite list.
@@theAverageJoe25 You're right, but i do speak for anyone, He is a good friend of mine, you see.
Notice how every single weapon in Combat Evolved could be considered functionally the best out of every halo game? Although the needler and sniper rifle in halo 3 could be exceptions
"Little Floodlings" are their new canon name, fight me.
1:50 straight up looks like what the assault rifle would look like if 343 designed it from scratch, it looks way to similar to the commando and the bulldog
I miss my 60 rnd magazine for the MA5
„Weapon sandbox“, „different utilities“.
And then there‘s me, a person who *only* uses the Assault Rifle and Battle Rifle/Magnum
Evolution of the sniper rifle next? Or the shotgun? Both have had some fairly big changes over the years.
The perfect assault rifle would be the halo 5 design with the halo 4 sound, and the halo 1 utility.
Halo Reach’s assault rifle was hands down my favorite, very versatile compared to the ones that came before it.
I like the H5 AR.
It actually works
it worked better in every game before 5 since it wasnt pretending to be an automatic BR
@@LateNightHalo Can't handle other opinions?
Wouldnt be the first time an assault rifle was used as an smg. The ak47 was often used by armies as an smg with extra range capabilities
@Keefe Murphy did I say it wasn't like that? No I didnt
Anyone else gets hungry when using the halo 3 AR? I just really want popcorn when I use it for some reason
When the music kicks in at 8:56 it’s litterally just sex
I love how unique the weapons are in the older halos
People like me like the halo 4 and 2A ARs because they are the only ARs that kill faster than the BRs and DMRs at close range. Halo 1, 3, 5, and reach ARs have a slower time to kill than the precision weapons.
SO THATS WHY IT FEELS LIKE OUR BULLETS JUST DISAPPEAR IN HALO 3 ONLINE?!
*BECAUSE THEY DO?!!!*
I totally feel you on the H4 AR being OP when compared to the other AR's in the series, especially in regards to how it "strips shields" faster, therefore pretty much negating the need for a Plasma based weapon, or CE's AR/Melee combo. It's still my favorite though... :)
However, I'm eagerly anticipating H4's release on PC, as I am absolutely sure we'll be seeing mods that aim to bring the gameplay/sandbox back in line with that of the Classic Halo titles!
Thats some real 1000 IQ shit right there.
He doesn't know shit. He plays exclusively on normal which is a bad way to measure the guns stats. He's basing his opinion on "feel" rather than objective stats.
Evolution of Shotgun next. Also will you be doing the same on vehicles?
When you talk about the weapons sound, it’d be nice to hear the difference between all of them.
My favorite AR is the accuracy Mod assault Rifle from Halo Online
"[Marathon] is not as good as Doom."
This is your last late night gaming for speaking such heresy, uh... Late Night Gaming.
Indeed. This is the true face of heresy, one who would subvert our faith and incite rebellion against the high council
Not until Apex Legend use a similar design :(
Why aren't MORE people noticing how they designed the Prowler SMG to be a nod to the Assault Rifle?!?!
KSword 007 i think it was based of the fn f2000
@@rs-zb1yq Good point.
@@KSword007 I thought that too
When I first saw my uncle playing apex legends I said "which halo is this?"
Notice you used Jafet's Neo Mombasa 3000 from Installation 01 OST
Wait is it me or did the thumbnail changed a few months or days later?
I have a theory of why assault rifle wasn’t in halo 2
Maybe while the events of halo 2 where happening maybe they where developing the later version of the assault rifle
That's not really how militaries work
