that's all art is these days, it has absolutely nothing to do with the actual art work anymore. it's all about who can outbid the next guy and have a collection worth millions and millions of dollars. it's sad of what has become of the art world. it's just another way for the wealthy to see accumulative returns on their money. they can't leave it sitting so they buy up big works of art and flip them for a profit years later. that's all art is these days, a business....others will make you believe it isn't but that's what it is.

Well actually, the buyer has bought other Basquiat paintings and said that when he saw this he was mesmerised by it, and how it stirred his excitement and love of art. So hopefully it's gone to a home that really loves it for the art and not just the price tag.

The conservative interpration is that art is created by people who thoroughly studied aesthetics, anatomy, colors, the lighting and shadows and various subjects to use this knowledge in creating their works. Sadly the likes of Basquiat never had the opportunity to master - let alone learn about - these things and it clearly shows in his paintings. They are interesting blots of paint on the canvas, but certainly not art.

Your comment is from 3 years ago. I watched a Sotheby's auction earlier this week (2021) and I was amazed that a Basquiat (a very good one) sold for $44 million, nevermind $98 million... on top of which, by the way, these folks pay Sotheby's "premium" and "overhead" charges, which seems to tack on another million or so, PLUS they pay taxes, which has to be something between 6 and 12 percent of the sale price... So tack on another $5.8 million or more. That's mind boggling.

He's also put this and and the other untitled Basquiat he bought into a museum in his hometown for everyone to enjoy. Very happy for the buyer. People need to stop jumping to conclusions..

Bear in mind, the buyer also pays taxes, so that's something like another $5.8 million. And the buyer pays Sotheby's "premium" and "overhead" fees, which looks to be another millin or so (the total paid to Sotheby's was $110.5 million), so really this cost the buyer about $116 million-plus.

  • @charles95880

The guy who bought it was a guy worth around $4 Billion from Japan. He owns a Direct to Consumer custom clothing website. Thats a lot of money to spend on a painting for anyone. Huge price tag. There are tons of awesome famous pieces for $10 million or less. If you were worth only $4 Billion, would you spend that much? I guess the price of these are most likely going up so another way of looking at is: own a Basquiat - enjoy it - then resell it for an additional $10 million in profit 5 year from now. Jean-Michel Basquait only painted around 900 or so paintings in the short time he was alive.

yes basquiat has the same technical skill as Michaelangelo and Rembrandt, the originality of Duchamp and imagination of Dali and Magritte, the same level of inventiveness of Picasso and the satirical verve of Hogarth and Goya. I stand corrected.

it is one thing saying you personally find his work imaginative. It is another thing comparing him to the great masters. I don't dislike his work but it is no better than thousands of artists that have come and gone into obscurity. Even those bored celebrities who decide to take up painting as a weekend hobby - they're work is every bit as good as Basquiat's. Good examples of these are Bob Dylan, Jim Carrey and the British comedian Noel Fielding. Fielding's work especially is very similar to Basquiat's, so if that makes Basquiat a genius, by logic Fielding is a genius too, thereby undermining the integrity of what constitutes as a 'genius' or a 'great artist'. In my personal opinion, great art needs to show originality and not just a little imagination . and the thing that separates true artist's is a technical skill that is beyond the average person who picks up a paint brush. Picasso mastered drawing at circa age 14. The young Van gogh also replicated the masters at a young age. If you look at the etchings of Rembrandt or the studies of Michaelangelo or the paintings of Raphael, Titian and my personal favourite Peder Kroyer, it is beyond argument that the technical skill involved in so perfectly portraying subjects in such complex positions, textures and light, is not a thing that just anyone can do. This is the problem with modern artists and why they treated with disdain and suspicion - because they claim to be artists yet produce work which lacks any special technical skill inducing the public to decry, "I could have done that" or more damningly "My 7 year old could have done that" . No one says that about Michaelangelo, Remrandt, Da Vinci or Kroyer. That says a lot about the status of the great masters compared to the average purveyor of modern art. Sorry for long response - didn't mean to type so much.

James, firstly, I am no expert on art, just curious and interested in it.
Secondly, you are welcome to make personal contact as this has become a private conversation in a public forum.
There's 2 things here - objective and subjective evaluations. 'Imaginative' clearly falls under subjective and is not worth arguing the toss over because it will always be a moot topic.
Even with this subjective topic, I still try really hard to apply some objective truth. For example, I find Picasso's and Braques earliest cubist paintings, Duchamp's installations, the work of Dali, Magritte and other surrealists, Mondrian's neo-plastic paintings and Warhol's pop art imagery, highly imaginative because they were so shockingly radical compared to anything that preceded them. I don't find Basquiat's work imaginative because there are scores of other abstract expressionist artists and works which are at least similar, if we cannot agree better, which preceded him by at least 50 years.
Here are just a few examples: Arshile Gorky, Phillip Guston and Willem de Gooning were doing similar art work in the 30s and 40s consisting of loosely painted figures and backgrounds in lurid colours and violent brush strokes in an emotionally heightened way. They were also much more diverse than Basquiat; as well as abstract and semi abstract paintings, they could also do traditional figurative work and create abstract expressionism in a wide variety of ways , remiscient of Matisse's prints and Joan Miro's cartoon-like canvasses.
Robert Rauschenberg was doing brilliant splattered and wild suburban life and depictions of the metroplis and referencing street culture in the 50s and 60s.
And most significantly, we have urban artist Rammellzee who was producing almost exactly the same type of urban art referencing modern city life and street culture in the 70s and early 80s.
'Imaginative' and 'original' are subjective terms we may never agree upon. But the chronology and archived records of other artists who have produced similar work to Basquiat long before him are undeniable objective facts. This renders his work not entirely original.
I don't dislike his work, but to suggest that he should be hailed a genius or the leading artist in his brand of art genre above those that preceded him by decades, and did as well if not better (this is arguable) . I think is a step too far.
I am sorry for the didactic lecture style response. These topics require dialogue, not typing on the comments section of UA-cam.

Ryan Bamford from your statement you know very little about the art game. over the last 200 years its always been that way. during the life of the artist his work sold for a sum that was fair for his needs. j.m.b.really did not care about money and never had a bank account. so 30 k per painting was a fair number in 84. as fab 5 Freddy said it was like printing money .the buyers were walking out with the paintings still dripping wet. years later they go for large numbers.

Face of capitalism, where ? " Jungle capitalism" is practiced in the former Soviet Union, not the US or Europe. Looked at Cuba lately? A new refrigerator costs a state employees 5 year salary! A bartender where only foreign tourists are allowed to go, makes in ONE DAY as much as a MEDICAL DOCTOR in one YEAR in Cuba. "Fantastic" society... :(
