CuForming is a project of passion born from our love for both science and crafting.
Since 2018, we've been exploring the fascinating world of electroforming, where we merge the wonders of electrochemistry with geology, botany, zoology and the artistry of crafting.
Copper, with its versatility and beauty, is our favorite material to work with, and our designs are inspired by the intricate textures found in nature.
Through experimentation with chemicals, various materials, and the electroforming process, we create unique pieces that celebrate the intersection of science and art.
With inherited skills in electrical engineering, painting, sculpting and materials assembly, and the curiosity about new technologies such as 3D printing, CuForming is where science meets creativity. - Навчання та стиль

What oxidation are you using?
This is just the video where I show how to make the patina. If you wanna know about the solution, you can find it in my ebook here: beacons.ai/cuforming There is also the possibility to watch the complete video that shows how to make it.
I suggest making your own protective finish next, there's a lot of literature on the product "Incralac" out there, but in essence, it's just Paraloid B-44 at 8-12% and an anti-oxidant agent, such as Benzotriazole at 0.1-0.2%, dissolved in acetone to make it to 100% (or toluene is probably better, acetone is a bit rough, but cheaper). Other chems can be added too to improve the qualities, but they're hard to source for most.
I mix in 4% of Paraloid B-72 in with 8% of the B-44 for my own mix. It's preserved rainbow patina absolutely perfectly for 3-4 months no with 0 signs of it changing or been lost.
I do apply a couple of layers, e.g. I'll very quickly dip in the item into the solution, let it hang to dry, then dip in the part that was holding it and let that dry (i.e. dip it upside down so the tiny spot that was connected to whatever you're dipping/hanging it with is covered too) then do the whole thing again so it has 2 quick layers of the solution on it (if using a weaker solvent, like toluene, you don't have to be so quick when dipping, but with acetone, it eats the first coat away if you're not fast enough lol)
I personally use zaponlack, it's a nitrocellulose protective specific for metals, it leaves a perfect shiny finish on any kind of surface, treated with brightener, polished or matte. I used paraloid once for protection, and I have to say that it preserves colors better than zapon, but is not as shine as zapon. Sometimes it leaves cracks and milky spots. I did that on pieces with liver of sulfur patina, and now I have to test both protectives with this new electropatina solution. We'll see how it goes.
@edgotbait read this
@@cuforming I've not had cracks in mine yet, early tests with just b72, and no b44 or antioxidant, from this time last year remain the same too tbh lol, tho that was mixed at 20%.
I'd play with your solvent and ratios of the paraloid products, as you shouldn't be getting milky spots or cracking. I've only had that with really weak acrylic mixes, like 1-2% in my experiments to date (I literally have a box full of test pieces with different commercial and diy efforts)
I try to veer away from commercial products are they're rather expensive when compared to the volume of chemical constituents used within, and I live in the UK, so import costs for most things these days are ridiculous 😂
@@cuforming you can definitely use the paraloid mixes as an undercoat if that's a main concern :) I've not had any shiny issues, tho I do mix for many hours with a digital stirrer, so the solutions I make are very homogenous.
@@noviceartisan I have mine mixed a 15% with acetone... I think this is another task to go through.
I love copper! Would love to know what the solution is that you use for the colors?
You can find it in my shop: website.beacons.ai/cuforming/tutorials-shop thank you!!!
@@cuforming my apologies, I read the title wrong. Thanks!
@@janstittleburg I just made some changes so you can't get confused. I hope this way it's better. If you are willing to buy it, I'll assist you with any question you have. Thank you!
Don’t get me wrong here but wouldn’t flame painting the copper be easier and with out the chemicals
The real trick is how to seal it with out losing or dulling the patina
Flaming painting is stunning as well, but I don't like it for one reason: it gets the metal softer. About the sealing, I left a comment in the one @noviceartisan made. Thank you, Ed!!!
Hi :) Can this be sealed with a protective coat (lacquer / wax etc.) without the piece losing its colour? I managed to get beautiful colours with stuff like LOS but the colours always faded as soon as the protective layer was applied so I'm looking for a 'colourful alternative' :)
That's one of the reasons I wanted to experiment with electropatina. I made a few test to see the differences between the two methods, and EP can keep the colors way better than LOS. I made tests without protection and EP kept the colors for about six months against the one month with LOS. Then, I've tested them with Renaissance Wax, Paraloid B72, and Zapon Lack, and there was a clear difference of color fading, where EP and Zapon Lack together was the perfect combination. I couldn't test protecta clear or other US brands because they are rarely available in my country. I feel perfectly confident by using Zapon Lack for LOS and EP, and in both cases I have little to none color fading.
If you are interested on this nitrocellulose varnish I'll leave a link for one I found on eBay just for example ebay.to/3U7057C
@@cuforming Wow, thank you so much for the quick reply - this is some exciting stuff - I bought the recipe (thank you so much for making it available) and I'm yet to test the electropatina, but the sealant vs colour fading issue has been on my mind for a while - I managed to get a beautiful colours with dipping my pieces in LOS or the Tifoo patina but they always faded instantly after i applied zapon or a wax on them. This is really good to know :) Thanks again , really appreciated ✨
@@SonchsCuriosities Thank you! I'll be giving you all the info on how to watch the complete video in private.
@@cuforming I already have it so no need to worry, I bought it about a month or so ago and you sent the details right away. thanks! :)

Sorry, too late.
What kind of chemical is that ?
I sell the recipe here: beacons.ai/cuforming
