I have met a young couple in Thailand recently. They were from US and flow to Singapore and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US. We have happened to have a casual friendly conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting. But I was surprised of what they told me. They said according to all their media reports in US and advice by their government and many other people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They were told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight. Chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist government is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere and every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason. All these is what they know about China. The couple is like below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government and controlled media. This is really sad.
So China introduced 144, the truth will be late, but it will not be buried.China is the country that is least afraid of others to travel. People from all over the world are welcome to travel to China, because the more you know, the more you like China.

Traditionally, there are six methods of formation and usage of Chinese characters, including: pictograph-象形, simple ideograph-指事, compound ideograph-会意, phonon-semantic compound-形声, phonetic loan-假借 and derivative cognate-转注. For example: eat is "吃", it look like open mouth then put into throat, it a pictograph character. And in your video, got a lady sell you herb tea, and a type of sticky-rice cake, it called "Zeng Gao 甑糕" , the character “甑” is on her T-shirt also, it is a name of steamer, so it's called "Zeng cake". This is a simple ideograph character. If people don't go to the school and learn it, they will only able to speak Chinese, but can't write.
The local dish is called 炸酱面(Zhajiangmian, in English: Jjajangmyeon). The drink was too expensive. That hand gesture in China means six. Chinese eat less meat, but more grains and vegetables than Westerners.

Hi Julia and Patrick! I was in Beijing a month ago and I loved it. Beautiful amazing city with a lot of history. Make sure you visit the Great Wall. Such a magnificent structure 🤩🤩
China is the country that is least afraid of others to travel. People from all over the world are welcome to travel to China, because the more you know, the more you like China.
There’s more vegetarian restaurants than you think. It’s common. Buy a 70 yuan translation device that’s accurate and have a normal conversation with everyone. They will point you to rabbit food restaurants
nice to see you tried something other than tofu 🤣 there are so many vegetarian options all over including buffets often found near temples. the noodles and dumplings you had are pretty common and shops like that are on every corner so you didn't have to drive an hr for it 😅 you can't really get scammed when something has a price label. some things in china are actually very expensive, like high end teas. then there are other things for tourists like the floral fruit tea you bought 😂. just memorize a few key phrases like how much and the numbers so you know when to pass up something.
Those teas are special but really expensive .The number seems low but it's for just one gram, so you'd feel like stabbed once you know the final price. That's why this kind of teas are called "Flower Tea Assassins" by many Chinese. And you can't blame them overcharging because they labled the price clearly, that's always frustrating.
you were not overcharged, the sign standing there shows that the fruit tea costs 1.5 rmb per gram. it's a showed price, so i think it's not overcharge. but it's truely a little bit expensive. and if you are a budget tourist in shanghai or beijing, you must ask the price first. actually shanghai and beijing can be the most expensive city in the world. something in china are very cheap, but something can be mindblowing expensive.for example tea, some chinese tea can be ridiculous expensive.
@@VeggiesOnTour some longjing tea or pu'er tea can be over 1 millionen rmbs per kilo. and teas around 5000 rmbs per kilo are just normal in china, you can find teas at this price anywhere. i'm chinese but not a tea drinker, i can not tell what are they good at.
You could try "清和园素食自助餐厅" (name of the restaurant, in XiDan, 30ish RMB per person, buffet or dish) or "SuHu 素虎” (name of the restaurant, in QianMen, ard 65RMB per person, buffet)
Generally, Chinese people will not buy such things in tourist areas, especially things like flower tea and candy. You can see that the price of flower tea is 1.5 yuan/gram, which seems very cheap, but if you calculate it, it is 1500 yuan/kg (€200/kg), which is actually very expensive. Moreover, those flower teas and candies are relatively heavy, a little bit can be more than 100 grams. So, although this is not a scam, because the prices are all written, but you still need to be careful about such sales methods.
very good beverage with fragrans, handmade makes the price a little higher, i think perhaps 20 that i can accept. Anyway Beijing capital, reasonable cost.
Through careful observation of the video, I noticed that at 7:33, you entered the Xinmin Market (新民菜市场). 8:35 The small shop where you buy beverages is: 李家荷叶甑糕 Li's Lotus Leaf Zenggao (Steamed Cake) you ordered two bottles of fermented rice wine: Ume Plum Rice Wine (乌梅米酿) and Osmanthus Rice Wine (桂花米酿)
@@VeggiesOnTour "Features: The super high cost-performance ratio of the golden location within the 2nd Ring (二环) Road... Near the moat by the Drum Tower, there is a XinMin Market. If you just want to buy some daily fresh vegetables and fruits, this place is very good. The market’s distinguishing features are its small and exquisite nature; each remaining stall has its irreplaceable reasons. The benefits are that the prices are cheap, and the quantities are large, and the variety and prices of the ingredients make it hard for people to stop buying." I am from Beijing and know that place, but I have never been to this market. I have been away from China for almost 20 years, and don't go back often. This is the information I saw online, and I am not personally sure about its accuracy. Also, personally, I find their homemade beverages to be not very cheap.
Beijing has very extreme climate.. winter temperature can go down to 40- c.. summer can be in the high 30s.. the imperial summer palace lake freezes in winter.. with ice skaters..
Haha - good observation! Our payment is actually set up, using Alipay! We use googletranslate here and there, but sometimes it's slow and we just go with it.
the tea would be 20% to 25% of the price you spent if you go to some supermarket or buy it online. We never bought this kind of thing in place like that. LOL
It's okay in China to taste samples of street food / snacks without eventually buying them! No need to feel embarrassed to refuse such a sale in the end!
I really admire you all. I live in Harbin, the northernmost part of China. I feel that the weather is very hot now and I hardly want to go out. Beijing is even hotter than here. It's really amazing to travel to Beijing on such hot weather. Be sure to try Beijing Roast Duck and Zhajiangmian😀😀
You can also try various stir fried dishes. Many foreign tourists come to China to eat a lot of noodles, and they miss out on a huge culinary world. Personally, I highly recommend flavored eggplant, Braised pork belly, squirrel fish, local three delicacies, pickled Chinese cabbage fish, grilled fish (with soup)。

It seems that some people in the comments section are surprised or disappointed that Beijing has blue skies, perhaps their cognition is still stuck in 2016. In 2016, a journalist named ChaiJin made a documentary called "Under the Dome," which focuses on the criticism of air pollution in Beijing. Although she was right at the time, the sponsors of the documentary were all American, and some of them were well-known anti-China organizations. So you can see it as a direction that the Western countries have finally found to manipulate Western public opinion to carry out media attacks on China. As a result of the documentary, China's current leaders have continued to support afforestation and green development (which is why China is now selling electric cars). And I don't believe that Japan or South Korea, where those who marvel at the blue skies in Beijing live, don't have cloudy days. As you know, the BBC often treats their videos with some very strange color filters that are worse than the color of the quilt my grandmother found under the bed.

There is a Lama Temple, pretty cool, you should definitely pay a visit❤ and national museum is free entrance, you will be amazed by those ancient artefacts.
No real Tibetans in the Lama Temple.
(I live nearby, and pass by on the way to Yonghegong subway.)
It's sad, because 15 years ago there used to be real monks there. And real Uyghurs on the streets selling chuanr and nan. Now they (my friends included) are gone. Disappeared around 2015.
So Incredible!! You’re right! 💯🙏🏻
Thank you
🙏🏻
enjoy yourself~~!
Hutong is a narrow street , with houses on both sides.
There’s more vegetarian restaurants than you think. It’s common. Buy a 70 yuan translation device that’s accurate and have a normal conversation with everyone. They will point you to rabbit food restaurants
We always believe that even though you know nothing of my language ,if I speak slowly enough you'll understand me🤣Like the elder lady selling drinks
🤣🤣🤣
nice to see you tried something other than tofu 🤣
there are so many vegetarian options all over including buffets often found near temples. the noodles and dumplings you had are pretty common and shops like that are on every corner so you didn't have to drive an hr for it 😅
you can't really get scammed when something has a price label. some things in china are actually very expensive, like high end teas. then there are other things for tourists like the floral fruit tea you bought 😂. just memorize a few key phrases like how much and the numbers so you know when to pass up something.
Hahaha, good suggestion this. Also we love tofu, how can you not? aha!! Its staple for vegetarians because we don't eat meat!
Flower Tea Assassins ahahaha!
If you're still in Beijing, apart from the usual tourist spots, I recommend you visit the National Museum of China.
💯🙏🏻
The price of most of Hutong in Beijing are more than 15000USD per square meter.
Oooft!!
14:03 The Chinese character for "six" is 六 , so the hand gesture is 🤙. And "ten" is 十 , with two finger cross. 😊
Ooh interesting to know that 🙏
Go back to that lake with the shops during night time. It will look even better
The sky is so blue and the street is so clean, and the food is so delicious, hahaha, amazing
Sooo true! 😂🙏🏻
you were not overcharged, the sign standing there shows that the fruit tea costs 1.5 rmb per gram. it's a showed price, so i think it's not overcharge.
but it's truely a little bit expensive.
and if you are a budget tourist in shanghai or beijing, you must ask the price first. actually shanghai and beijing can be the most expensive city in the world.
something in china are very cheap, but something can be mindblowing expensive.for example tea, some chinese tea can be ridiculous expensive.
Good advice, yeah I thought it was a high price. Either way, nice to support locals. What's the expensive teas?
@@VeggiesOnTour some longjing tea or pu'er tea can be over 1 millionen rmbs per kilo. and teas around 5000 rmbs per kilo are just normal in china, you can find teas at this price anywhere.
i'm chinese but not a tea drinker, i can not tell what are they good at.
You are great.👍
🙏🙏🙏
Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese restaurant. YES, a Taiwanese restaurant in China. I guess you don't expect that either.
Ooh yes, we saw it was Taiwanese!
No the food is traditional mainland food like xiaolongbao dandan noodle , but the Chinese in Taiwan copied that
Welcome to Beijing, you guys should try vegetarian buffet in Beijing, where you'd be able to try many different veg dishes.
You could try "清和园素食自助餐厅" (name of the restaurant, in XiDan, 30ish RMB per person, buffet or dish) or "SuHu 素虎” (name of the restaurant, in QianMen, ard 65RMB per person, buffet)
WOW bean sauce veggie nice.. with Rice noodles.. Lovely with zuccini...
Very tasty mate!
@@VeggiesOnTour NIce....
despite 开花豆/铁蚕豆 as snacks, fava bean is not a very frequently used ingredient in daily cuisine of beijing. Oh one more thing, 豌豆黄, but it’s a pastry.
Good to know! 🙏🏻
Dude, if you can't speak the language, you can try to use a translation program to show it to someone else, that's how you communicate effectively
It’s also incredibly slow and some old folk don’t like it - so yeah you’re right but not all in circumstances!
In Chinese hand gestures, two is shown by lifting your index finger and middle finger together.
9:31 RMB30 a bottle of home made flower drink. It's a bit expensive.
You can use Apple Maps in China without using Google Maps.

Real Beijingers don't even go to Maliandao to buy tea anymore.
very good beverage with fragrans, handmade makes the price a little higher, i think perhaps 20 that i can accept. Anyway Beijing capital, reasonable cost.
The BBC says there are no blue skies in Beijing
Really? 😅😅
Amap (Gaode Maps) is widely used and very convenient.
Interesting!
Through careful observation of the video, I noticed that at 7:33, you entered the Xinmin Market
8:35 The small shop where you buy beverages is: 李家荷叶甑糕 Li's Lotus Leaf Zenggao (Steamed Cake)
you ordered two bottles of fermented rice wine: Ume Plum Rice Wine (乌梅米酿) and Osmanthus Rice Wine (桂花米酿)
Amazing insight!! Xinmin Market, is it famous? Looks local! Oh was it, it didn’t taste alcoholic
The benefits are that the prices are cheap, and the quantities are large, and the variety and prices of the ingredients make it hard for people to stop buying."
I am from Beijing and know that place, but I have never been to this market. I have been away from China for almost 20 years, and don't go back often. This is the information I saw online, and I am not personally sure about its accuracy. Also, personally, I find their homemade beverages to be not very cheap.
it is obviously that you did not try the Electric -Pay , which is popularized in China & much more convenient than cash
We use Alipay 😂
👍🏻
Nice
Great insights! Xie xie! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Beijing is my favourite city ❤
the reason why Chinese have a different hand gesture for number 6 is that because how six is written in Chinese characters.

Beijing is beautifully sunny!!
