- Hello everyone, it’s Pierre and welcome back to the channel!
In today’s video we are going to look at my Indonesian Tigerfish or Gold #Datnoid. It’s a big, bold and beautiful predator. Before we continue to talk about this rare and amazing fish, I’d like to thank you for being a subscriber and if you aren’t one yet, please hit like and subscribe down below - it really helps me bring you more and better videos. Unlike some other Datnoid videos on UA-cam, I actually own this fish and have raised it from a baby which allows me to share my knowledge and experience with you first hand.
Name and Origin:
This fish has many other names including Finescale Datnoid, 4 bar Datnoid and Gold Tiger Perch. Its scientific name is Datnioides microlepis.
The Gold Datnoid is native to Southeast Asia and particularly Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula. It’s a freshwater fish and lives mostly in rivers and is sometimes caught for sport.
I got my fish when it was a 3 inch long baby about 5 years ago. For that size expect to pay between $50 to $100, with the price going up depending on the quality, symmetry and cleanliness of the stripes. This fish is relatively uncommon in the trade so don’t expect Petco or PetSmart to carry these. If you want to get your hands on one, your best bet is a local fish store or online depending on where you live.
Care and Feeding:
Indonesian #Tigerfish are tropical fish and require a temperature range of 76 - 84 degrees Fahrenheit. They can be adapted to live at a pH of 6.5 to 7.8.
These are big fish and require good water quality and adequate space. They grow to 12-16 inches in captivity over several years. My 5 year old Datnoid is about 15 inches in total length. I recommend a minimum of 120 gallons for a single Datnoid and ideally 180 gallons or more. I keep my Datnoid in a 265 gallon system with polypterus and catfish. Some mild water flow will be appreciated as they live in rivers in the wild.
Datnoids are predatory and eat fish, shrimp, frogs and insects in the wild. In captivity, they can be difficult to feed and become temperamental and even go on hunger strikes. However, they are intelligent and trainable so you can eventually get them on pellets. I was lucky that my Datnoid ate pellets from the beginning. I have also fed my Datnoid slivers of tilapia, market shrimp, earthworms and of course carnivore pellets. They have a protrusible mouth that they are able to extend to gulp food whole - as you can see they have a lightning-fast strike that is impressive to witness.
Behavior and Tankmates:
Datnoids are predatory but not aggressive. They can be kept with non-aggressive fish that are big and fast enough not to be eaten. They sometimes squabble with other Datnoids but if you keep 5 or more of them in a tank, they will do fine and a dominant fish will emerge. They can be kept with polypterus, large catfish, arowanas, peacock bass and stingrays. Remember that if it’s small enough to be eaten by the Datnoid, it will be!
One of the aspects of Datnoids that hobbyists talk about is “stability”. This is when the Datnoid’s colors change and darken, revealing spots and fading of the stripes which indicate that there is something that is making the Datnoid unhappy or stressed out. In fact, when buying a Datnoid, one of the things that you may be told is what percentage of the time the Datnoid is stable, with 100% indicating that the fish is confident, bold and happy and it shows in its behavior and color, always coming up to the tank and exploring confidently and is almost always a beautiful golden color with distinct, black stripes.
Conclusion:
As you’ve seen, the Gold Datnoid or Indonesian Tigerfish is an unusual, beautiful and big fish with an inquisitive and bold personality. If you can get your hands on one and have a tank big enough to keep it, I highly recommend picking one up!
Please remember that I love reading your comments and answering questions! Again, please like and subscribe if you haven’t already and as always, thanks for watching and happy fishkeeping!
#FishBeast #Aquarium #monsterfish #predator - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
Their color turn dark to black when they became too confortable in tank, so many hobbiest here in indonesia kept them with agressive/semi agressive fish like oscar, peacock bass, and parrot to kept the datnoid color's bright
Im planning to get one from a local shop here. Around 2 to 3 inches. They have 4 bars but theyre dark. Like you stated, is that how you keep them stable(term use by sellers/other hobbyist).
@@raesimon7971they take a while to grow so I’d get a big one
Nice video, the fish looks cool!
Fantastic video. Keep up the great work!
Appreciate it bro! Thank you. 😁
Ive got a 5 inch one housed with an rtg arowana, they squabble from time to time especially during feeding. Excited to see mine get as big as yours!
It takes a while but that dat will become a monster!
Dude that that night of yours is beautiful it's one of the better ones I've seen and oh yeah they get big they get heavy too
Bro thank you! I lucked out with him, the bars are nice and full, symmetrical and he has a great tail wrap with color underneath. Peace to you and happy fishkeeping bro
Been fish keeping my entire life and this is BY FAR my favourite fish!!!!
It is almost impossible to find this fish as I live in Australia and they retail for over $1000. I have owned 5 in total over my lifetime.
I still have dreams of finding one in a local fish shop, only to wake up disappointed in the morning.
Hoping I can keep this beautiful and intelligent fish again soon!!
They really are wonderful! Also appear to be very intelligent. Good luck on your search!
thanks for the video !! planning on getting 2 soon from Oahu
Nice! If you have the space try to get 3 or 4 to diffuse aggression. Otherwise I recommend sticking with a single fish… it may work if they have plenty of similar sized tankmates!
Thank you for sharing this precious knowledge 🙏 just started caring for indo datnoids, and this video is really helpful for a newbie like me😊
Thank you for your kind comment! I am happy I could help. They are really great fish and seem very smart! Happy Datnoid keeping!
Brother nice information post more vedio about datnoid
I had that same tiger fish had it for years. It was big and it died one day and I was so disappointed you just got me motivated again.❤💪🙏
Nice! Get another one bro! They are amazing fish 💪🏼
I have a silver since last week, i love the colors and how active he is, he is about 3 inch right now
Very cool!
Awesome video! 🤩
Thanks bro!
I second this opinion
@@jcgalvan26 TREMENDOUS!! 😁
Raising one now. From 1 cm to thumb so far. Love the Bichirs too!!!!
Nice! That little critter will get huge in no time!
It's a very beautiful fish. I was completely unfamiliar with it before this video.
It’s one of my favorites for sure!
awesome video
Thank you!
well presented my friend
Thank you brother!
Was in LFS yesterday and some one dropped off a GD that was at least 12 inches. They had it in the stock trough that they use for Koi.
Did you pick it up? That’s a good size.
@@TheFishBeast I was tempted, but the largest tank I have is 125 gallon. I hope some body who loves those fish picked it up and is doing it right!
Very nice fish you have 👍✨..I just got 2 of them. They are very shy now.-. They where feeding then live little goldfish , I am trying to make them eat peace’s of shrimp and pellets… It’s day 3. They are about 12 cm
Very cool! Were you able to get them on pellets?
Nice video. Question. I owe one and wonder when they get their golden colour?
Mine did at around 6 inches
I recently got 2 IT's and 2NTT's all are 1.5-2 inches. Can't wait for them to grow as big as yours.
Nice! Get them on pellets ASAP, keep the water clean and they’ll get huge. Enjoy!
@@TheFishBeastHow can I pellet train them? Mine only santa live feeders :(
@@lgarmo start with frozen food like shrimp, krill and tilapia fillet. Then mix pellets in with that.
i have five of these,7yrs+ old all. off-live diet. great aro tank mates
Wow that sounds awesome! How big is your tank?
@@TheFishBeast i got them in a pondarium 6*10*4 ft
@@j.r.hinaut9748 ahhh so cool bro
Have 2 5inch Datnoids that have always fought since 2inches.. both eat pellets and shrimp. Have had different tankmates but only as distractors.. I only want the two Dats a Black Ghost and maybe another bottom fish like a bishir. Been thinking about putting a divider in my 150g tank with a Dat on each side, of course it would have holes for water movement and filtration and it would keep them separated. They are really close in size but just that little bit of difference makes one more dominant. Their separated now with divider to try and get them same size to see if they can coexist. I’ve raised Datnoids for over 30 years but have always had groups of 5 or more. Have seen really huge pairs get along but they were too big to fight lol.. Do you think the divider idea would work for a permanent situation, would half of a 150 be too small or should I just let them go at it. They are both happy healthy and mostly stable.
Hey man, I think that’ll work for a while but it’s a tough situation. Eventually you’ll have to decide what to do. Maybe get another 150 so each gets a tank? Or rehome the one with worse pattern. A single one will do great in the 150 for life maybe with a bichir and the BGK. The other option is get a 180 or 220 and 3 more dats, keep 5 of them in there, use the 150 as a sump so they grow nice and huge with the water volume.
Hi brother just i had a seachem de-intrate in over head filter it's running
Keep going and test your water daily
I had one of these some 20 years ago.
Cool! What happened to it? And how long did it live?
I have 3 inch two detnoids with albino arowana 10 inch, 3 silver sharks, lancer cat fish and RTG arowana 8 inch...i have hiding spots in my tank...however...the detnoids are always hiding....they are 2 days old in my tank...anything that I have to do to see them move freely?
They might be intimidated by the bigger fish. I’m a little worried that they’ll be eaten.
Can I keep baby NTT's in planted Angel Fish Tank as a temporary grow out. I have a 150 Gallon South American Cichlid tank where I will move it eventually. Thanks!
You can temporarily depending on the sizes. Watch for bullying behaviors and make sure everyone is eating.
Hi bro i have 2 datnoid about 11 and 9 inch in my community tank with asian aro, silver aro, spotted gar . Its been 6 month since it got into my tank , its always stable but during the day when the light and wavemaker is on it always goes to the side and faces down both the fish.. what could be problem and i wan it to swim around my tank . Pls help
How big is the tank? Parameters ok? If everything is good, they could be stressed from each other or one of the other big predators. I’ve heard it’s best to have either just one solo datnoid OR at least 4 or 5 but not 2.
Hi fish I’d looking super. Good care taken. My only concern is 90% change of water. Can this be avoided by placing it in a heavy planted tank.?
Fish is looking healthy. What kind of infection have to notice in this fish and what was the remedy?
Hello! You can change less water at a time but you will just have to do it more frequently depending on how much you feed. If the tank is heavily planted then the interval will be longer! Happy fishkeeping!
Awesome video. Will sumatra indo tiger eat my clown loaches ? Please guide
It depends if the loaches are small enough to be eaten.
i have 3 of them 😊
Nice! Aren’t they wonderful?
i call mine DAMIEN i tried to put an acara in with it and it came unglued. its in a 125 by itself.
its hiding in the corner seems to have made a nest is that a female? it comes out now and then its twice the size it was in about 6 weeks, now eating goldfish. and guppies. and shrimp. good thing it's not spoiled.
Nice growth rate! Yes, sometimes tankmates can be hit or miss with these…
I recommend avoiding live feeder fish due the the extreme risk of diseases such as parasites. The only exception is if you raise the feeders yourself. Shrimp are ok since they don’t have diseases that they can pass on to fish (generally).
Enjoy your Datnoid!
Any idea why it is called 'AT Tiger' ? ( Some LFS labelled it as 'AT' )
AT probably means they’re selling the “American Tigerfish” which is Datnioides polota. It’s from Southeast Asia, India, etc so I don’t know why people call it that… maybe marketing 🤓
Did this guy grow with up the bush fish?
It’s about 2 years older but the bush fish got introduced when the datnoid was still a juvenile. It’s cool that he’s never eaten him or the little albino bichir
How to stable their color quickly? Food?
Hiding places, clean water, stable temperature, appropriate tankmates, enough space, consistent feeding schedule and high quality food.
I have a 6 inch datnoid and it will not eat what should I do I tried shiners, krill, and pellets. Do you have any suggestions.
Did you just buy it? What size tank? Any tankmates? We can figure this out bro
I bought it 3 months ago was eating pellets and when it stoped I tried shiners then krill. It’s in 125 gallon tank and no tank mates
Has not ate for over a month
What size of tiger fish suitable to be a tankmate for 2 ft length of arowana?
At least 12 inches should be safe.
@@TheFishBeast 🤗🤗🤗
Hi my name is Paul Bose from India resently i brought IT fish but still fish is taking any food i tred shrimp mealworm shall I feed live fish
Sorry I don’t think I saw your comment… is the fish doing ok?
what do you feed this beautiful fish?
Shrimp, pellets, frozen fish, tilapia and worms!
👍👍👍👍👍👍
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
How to make my datnoid stable? Saiz 2.5inc😅
Many factors. Might need to have more hiding places. What are the tank mates?
What u feed to them
Carnivore pellets mostly (Ken’s Krill, Aquacarium Carnivore Pellets), occasional tilapia and shrimp.
What's the substrate?
This is red blasting sand
Can these live with Oscars
Yes! They are great tankmates for Oscars and other large semi aggressive cichlids.
@@TheFishBeast ❤️
He want to eat pallet or not?
Yes!
Temperature set in 29
Indo or Sumatra?
Indo!
fish of thailand.
It live in Bueng Boraphet swamp.
Are they easy to catch?
@@TheFishBeast NO. Thai people like to eat it because the meat is so delicious until now preserved by the local government.
Advice for my datniod fish who is on hunger strike ?
How long now? Usually you can get it on pellets if you starve it for 7-10 days.
@@TheFishBeast both of them are roughly 13 inches, it’s been I would say 14 days at least ): been trying to get them on prawns but to no avail
@@Bananaapple272 try pellets dipped in garlic guard. Did you just buy them?
@@TheFishBeast yes bought them 2-3 weeks back, have not tried the garlic guard not sure if it will pollute water
Don’t worry it won’t pollute. Try some frozen shrimp and frozen tilapia bits.
The other option is to just feed live but you have to create a colony of feeder guppies and mollies. Also you can breed crayfish as feeders. Try earthworms too.
Hi my Datnoid will not eat anything. I've tried everything it's just not interested.
It’s ok to starve it for 7-10 days. You can try frozen silversides on a string and move it around in the water. When it strikes that you can do it without the string. Then you can feed it pellets with silversides and eventually pellets. Let me know how it goes!
@@TheFishBeast he hasn't eaten anything for 2 months so I've moved him into a hospital tank and am treating with Metronidazole just in case has an infection. After that I will leave a few weeks and then try worming him. I got him from friend and he said he always ate fine. He's in a massive tank with just one medium sized Asian Aro and some big clowns Loaches. That's it. They all get along fine.
@@justinstuart8382 ok that’s a good idea. Keep him in isolation until you can get him to eat. You may have to feed live food first (night crawlers, livebearers) if it’s been that long. Since you’re treating the tank anyway with metro, might as well add kanamycin. That way he’s completely covered pathogen-wise. Plus you can feed live fish
@@TheFishBeast thanks for the advice I'll look that up
I want to buy this fish. Can anyone in indonesia send to thailand.
You should be able to buy this in a local fish store there.
It's almost week still it's hiding in the corner and also fading colour i am using RO water driftwood
Don’t use RO water, it could kill the fish. Are you adding minerals to the water? What’s your water change schedule and stocking?
Weekly 30 persent water
And also I am feeding goldfish is it okay or i have change to pellets
Starting i tried to feed frozen shrimps, but more than week it won't had, so I feed live goldfish
@@paulbosco9924 is the tank cycled bro? What are your parameters? Also don’t feed goldfish, they have thiaminase which can give your datnoids health issues. You can starve the datnoid for 1-2 weeks so it eats frozen shrimp.
@@TheFishBeast not yet i have make the cycle soon water parameter 7. 2 PH
I’m seriously wanting one of these fish! I do have a question though, what about other tank mates then the ones that you listed? I was thinking of adding one to my Oscar and several tank. It also houses some silver dollars. Do you think a tiger fish would do well in a set up with those tank mates? On the bottom there is a four lined pick this catfish and three clown loaches. How do you think the set up would do you for the “stability“ of a debt annoyed? I guess I should mention that there are three Oscars and two several and four silver dollars.🐠🦯
As far as temperament it should be ok but again it really depends on the actual fish’s personality. Also how big the other fish are! How big is the tank?
@@TheFishBeast well, I think I’ve changed my mind about the tank that I want to put one in. I’m about to get a 120 gallon tall that I think I’m going to start one out in with two baby Oscars and that would probably be about all that I put in it beside some thing on the bottom. What do you think?🐠🦯
That will be perfect and fully stocked. In fact start the tank with the datnoid only for 6 months so it has time to grow and get comfy. The Oscars can come later since they’ll grow really fast.
@@TheFishBeast very cool. Thanks for the advice. I’ll be sure and hit you up when I get my new little guy!🤘🏻🐠🦯
