How To Practice Slide Guitar | Vocal Lines
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 лип 2020
- In this video we go through why it's important to treat the guitar as a vocal instrument. Practice by doing call and response exercises with recordings of soul vocalists from the 60s. After getting better at this, you can combine vocal phrases with traditional slide guitar riffs to make your playing more innovative and robust.

Dude I will comment on every one of your videos; your slide skill is amazing and I appreciate you posting instructional stuff. You're doing what very few can do. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much Steve-your kind words and constant support mean so much to me!
Good concept video, nothing worse that listening to someone throwing licks together and calling blues. Many say that slide should imitate the human voice - I've read that Duane Allman stated on different occasions that slide was all about imitating harmonica players.....
Another top video! These really are great and so useful, thanks 👍🎸
Thanks so much for your support man!
Great stuff.
Really nice playing especially your mix between vocal and guitar riff
Thanks so much Fabian!
You are the exact dude I needed to find man. Seriously don’t stop! I’m dying to learn these techniques and the ragas!
Thanks so much for your comment Jared. It makes me happy to know they’re useful to you! More are on the way
Great lesson!
Great melody transcriptions using slide. Bravo!
Thanks so much for the support John!

Agree with Steve man, keep up the slide and awesome tips Dan! Would be great if you could make a video on double stops or practice licks too!
Thanks a lot man! And thank you for the suggestion -- I will do that!
🤘🏻🤘🏻 yessir bro. Great video!
Thank you so much brother!
I was NOT expecting Lawrence to show up here, nice taste!!
great stuff
Thank you so much man, I'd like to add that practicing to Billie Holiday's vocal lines would add even more depth to someone slide playing, since her emotional depth, her sense of melody and her unique sense of rhythm!
Your a great player and this lesson taught me alot...
What a great concept when I get on my feet again ill get the lessons from ya
so many broke now..Its music that saves me every time so your channel helps

also the Indian influences playing thats beautiful to hear...
Love this! I'm so happy to hear that I'm able to provide inspiration for you. Keep digging into all those different styles (Harrison, Duane, Derek) and you will find your way down your own path. Keep on sliding my friend!
Great lesson
Thanks so much John!
Hey, really cool channel my man!! I've been thinking about challenging myself to become a better slide player, so your videos is definitly helpful and inspiring to me! Also - I am your 5000'nd subscriber :)
Another instrument worth imitating for slide guitar other than the human voice is the harmonica, specifically the diatonic or blues harp. I take a lot of influence from harp players who do a lot of single notes or bluesy melodic stuff like Paul Butterfield and Todd Parrott (whom the latter is also a good friend of mine). In fact, taking harp riffs to slide guitar is a very classic approach to the sound, especially if you're going for a Duane Allman or Elmore James sound. It also helps that if you're a harmonica player yourself, you can transfer some of your riffs to the instrument.
This is my new mission on my Lap Steel ❤ comes tomorrow
Love it man! Would like to see your progress!
And THAT is how you earn a subscriber, damn.
Thank you so much for your comment man! I'm grateful for your support!
awesome
Thanks man!
This is the indian classical approach to music. “Gayaki” approach meaning vocal.
This is awesome! I'm glad I kept exploring your page. Thank you. you are an incredible player. definitely subscribed and looking forward to your future videos. Perhaps provide some tabs for your lessons via a Patreon page or something?
Thanks so much for supporting man, I really appreciate it. Thank you for the suggestion too--I would be happy to give more detailed lessons if there is a demand!
@@danvtoppo oh there totally is a demand. there is no one doing proper DT lessons. I know I would be all over that. His style is tough to do, both slide, fretted lead and rhythm playing
Man wish you could add some tabs to that. Killer though!
Where you’d get that Eat A Peach shirt man? I’m digging it and the necklace too, where can I get them?
Hey man! The Eat a Peach shirt was a Christmas present from a friend back in high school, and the beads were given to me by one of my mentors. They're wooden mala beads
can you recommend some songs for play along with? Thanks~~
Hello my friend
I would like to buy your course, could you tell me if the licks of your video how to practice slide guitar vocal lines are there? Thanks very much
Antonio
Are you playing with open E tunning? Do you think is it the best to start practicing slide guitar? Thanks
Yes I am playing in open E tuning. I would recommend to start learning in open E!
Do you give lessons anywhere?
What tuners you got on there?
is it lifted strings on regular guitar?
Is this in open E?
anyone know if hes in open e tuning?
open e man!
Jesus. How do you have so few subscribers
Thanks so much man-that means a lot to me!
What is your string height?
It is (very) slightly higher than 4/64 ". I have plans to make a video laying out my setup (specifics about the guitar and how its set up, amps, etc). It will be out in the near future!
How find the key of the song and do u tune the guitar to that tune.?
I tend to use my ear to find the key of the song. I don't tune to the song--I always stay in open E
