The Junkers JU-88 was one of the most innovative aircraft of that era along with the Heinkel, and the Dornier whom all had very similar designed aircraft that served throughout WWII. This aircraft was a very effective fighter/bomber/night fighter against the Allies, it proved it's worth to Germany many times over. Many of these aircraft were seized by the Allies or were handed over by German' Pilots who either landed at a wrong airbase (allied airbase) or defected from Germany and surrendered their aircraft to the Allies which happened several times throughout the war. The Allies immediately started reverse engineering and test flying these aircraft during WWII and after the war was over. They also did that with the ME262 Jet which highly influenced the design of the first American, British, Frence, and most other European nations first fighter jets which quickly came to be and replaced most of the piston engine aircraft in a short period of time. Without a doubt if the ME262 had not be seized and studied closely, the jet age may have taken a bit longer.

Geschwader 30 = 4D - 2. Buchstabe entscheidend für die Staffeln: Geschwaderstab BUchstabe A = blau, Stab I. Gruppe = B grün (25 RLM) 1. Staffel H = weiß, 2. Staffel = K rot, 3. Staffel = L gelb; II. Gr.Strab C (grün 25) 4. Staffel M = weiß, 5. Staffel N = rot, 6. Staffel P = gelb, III. Gruppenstab D (grün 25 ) 7. Staffel R = weiß, 8. Staffel S = rot, 9. Staffel T = gelb, 10. Ergänzungsstaffel (Lehr) U + V (schwarz). Staffel = 9-12 Ju 88, Gruppe = 27-30 Ju 88 (Sollstärke), Geschwader ca. 81 - 90 Flugzeuge.

Superbe reconstitution ! on s'y croirait presque.

At about 25:50, the shell cases appear to move from the tail of the JU-88 towards the ventral cupola against the airflow, as opposed to moving from the ventral cupola towards the tail going with the airflow.

I'll say again sir, you have no equal when it comes to this sort of thing. I haven't watched this in a year or so and I enjoyed as much if not more so than the first time. That attack by that MiG or YAK ( idk which is what) was a nail biter. I would love to see you make something with a Grumman F6F or F4F.

The fighters trying to down them have an advantage, they know the range and windows of the defensive weapons . Follow high get the MG to run out of ammo or change magazines . His bullets will drop before they get to you your guns will drop right on to him from above . If the defensive gunner gets killed or out of ammo it is over . Would not want to be a gunner

    • @zxc111yt

This video based on several military history books, and can be considered as a historical reconstruction. Actualy Ju 88 is a "fast bomber" and has very well armored crew cabin. So if the bomber after diving has speed 500 km/h, and fighter has 550 km/h, the difference is only 50 km/h, not enough for sudden strike. If the fighter has poor front armor and poor armament (like MiG-3) attacking such target is very dangerous challenge. The main book I have used to make scenario is "Sky of War" written by Pokryshkin (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Pokryshkin) Unfortunately there is no english translation of this book. Pokryshkin wrote the Ju 88 is very dangerous hard target. One ammunition set of MiG-3 is not enough to shoot down that well armored bomber. Many soviet fighter pilots died or wounded during Ju-88 interception. Pokryshkin was extremely lucky, the rear gunners bullet was stucked in collimator sight of his MiG-3. In 1941 german command knew very well about the superiority of Ju-88 and sent them on a missions lonely even without cover. The situation changed in 1943 when soviet air force started getting La-5 and P-39 with powerful armament and good front armor.

      @zxc111yt  4 роки тому +3

Excellent !

It is possible to move a "pilot's head" all around the cockpit according to the accurate 3D model. The only irrealistic feature (in my humble opinion) is a possibility for virtual pilot's head to turn back 150...160 degrees. The rest is pretty much real.

It's like being in the cockpit! My only question is why is there just one JU-88, and no fighter escort.

In that period German bombers worked at the day only. For a short time, the entire squadron was compactly assembled at the one airfield. But Soviet pilots obstructed this tactic, striking that airfields, especially at night. Then the Germans started to use new tactic. The bombers were dispersed on several airfields, than took off from different airfields simultanously and flew at low altitude, gathering in large groups. During the formation of such groups, slow flying bombers with heavy load were very vulnerable, but the Soviet fighters were not hunting in the enemy rear at that time.
There are many mentions in Soviet documents and memories about alone Ju-88 on reconnaissance or bombing mission in 1941-1942. I think, the German command was very confident in the characteristics of this advanced aircraft. Hi speed, good rear armor, large variety of weapons allowed successfully use even single Ju-88. It was Blitzkrieg against huge teritories of Soviet Union. There is mention from September 19, 1941, two MiG-3 could not bring down the Ju-88 using weapons. When the ammunition ran out, they both tried to ram the bomber. After first ram Ju-88 lost right stabilisator and rudder, but still flying. After second ram Yu-88 fell. The situation completely changed in 1943, when Soviet air force where supplied with many new hi speed fighters equipped with 20-37 mm guns. Actually LaGG-3 and Yak-1 with 20 mm gun started to fight in 1942, but at that time there were too few of them.

Excellent. Beautiful aircraft. Gunners wasting too much ammo on long range firing. wonder if Ju88 would have been better with radial engines ?

JU88 night fighters had the BMW radial engine.

RemusKingOfRome5, The gunners fire at long range to let the fighters know that they can see them and to keep them from coming into effective range, you don't have to shoot down an enemy to get home, keeping them out of range works just as well.

Doing exactly what the fighters want, wasting ammo. Then when all gone, fighter moves in to destroy Ju88,as happened here.

So where are the German fighters?
Single Ju-88 on a daylight raid with no escort over contested Russian airspace, not likely.
"Contested" means no one has superiority.
While a lot of work was put into this video and it was done well, (credit where credit is due), it is an unrealistic scenario.

while not mandatory, its recommended to first watch the entirety of the video before writing a comment. This way people wont scratch their heads wondering if you are stupid. And yes you are.
