Just about any time I have any interest in a firearm, I can almost always find a hickock45 video about it. It really helps me made the decision to buy or not.
I carry mine often. Can't beat it for concealment. Plus mine is very reliable,,,,if I shoot it. It won't cycle for my wife. You CANNOT limp wrist these
@@Cameraflyer- No thanks. I would rather carry the Ruger LCP max that has 10+ one. In the middle of a gunfight, the last thing you want is limited magazines or having to change magazines. If that’s the case, I would rather carry to 380s than a limited one.
NIFTY! I'm a 77 y/o retired Marine Corps officer and this is my carry gun of choice. I carry it in a DeSantis "Quick Snap" holster (left hand side). This particular style goes back to (I think) 1993. I love it as do most who I "allow" to try it. No longer in this same style, occasionally a used one can be found in good shape. Thanks for the video!
My wife just got one. (She likes 1911's for some reason.) So far she/we like it. I was hesitant several years ago for her to have a firearm that is carried "cocked and locked". (It's either worthless or dangerous if you forget one) Now she has quite a bit more experience and understanding of firearms, I'm sure she can handle it. It's nice to be able to pull the hammer back, then engage the safety, then load a magazine and rack one into the chamber. She has two Mustangs now... one from Ford and one from Colt!
I'm glad to see you finally ran the Mustang! Bought mine about two years ago after the Ruger LCP I had blew apart in my hand while shooting it. No injuries, but after sending it back for repairs, Ruger informed me it was condemned and sent me a new one. YEAH, like I'd trust that gun again! Anyway, after I sent it back, I promptly set about locating a Mustang and finally found one for just under $700 (remember, there was a gun buying panic back then). I've put 500 rounds through her and not one single type of failure. It's the perfect carry gun during hot weather when you're not wearing much, but still prefer to be prepared. Lots of good .380 ammo available now too to compensate for the small caliber. I am more accurate with it than any of my other mini automatics--a natural pointer and usually hits exactly where my index finger is pointing..
I handled one of these in a shop a few weeks ago. It was surprisingly nice and had a pretty good trigger. I had a similar thought, "Why don't you ever hear anything about this."
Sweet little gun there, nice design and clearly for a back up or concealed carry it would be a rude awakening for a bad guy to find himself facing this at close range! Thanks for the heads up on this pistol!
I have an 80's MK IV Government Pocketlite that my uncle sold to my family for $400 when I was like 6. Now it's a collector's item, I feel bad about carrying it around everywhere, but it's such a durable pistol, and I can strip and assemble in under a minute. Easy to clean, easy to shoot, this is the ultimate pocket pistol.
Thank You Sir for reviewing this little colt, I carry this all the time and really like it, with the improvements of the .380 caliber, its o.k. for a primary carry pistol.
I fell back in love with mine, when I racked it! It’s one a 78 year old can handle, well! I really love the size, it doesn’t profile, easily! My baby Browning, is my backup.
My neighbor just gave me one of these for doing some work for him. Cool little gun, I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Since watching hickok45, I can hardly wait to take it out now.

I bought this Colt Mustang Pocketlite 380 for my wife a month ago after looking at just about every small carry pistol on the market. It turned out to be a great choice. It is a fantastic little shooter that handles all the different brands of ammo I bought. This includes cheap TULammo FMJ, Federal FMJ, Winchester FMJ and two personal protection hollow points. I've never had a FTF or FTE. I like the all metal frame vs polymer. I replaced the plastic guide rod with a SS one for $20 My wife, who really likes 22's duh, love this little gun. The sites are dead on and the recoil is light. I bought it from Bud's and it was the best price on line. I'm thinking about replacing my Sig with one of these! P.S. Watch all of Hickok45's video's!
I bought an early Colt Mustang Pocketlite in 1989 and carried it for many years including as a backup during my years as a deputy sheriff. I have since transitioned to a Sig P365 (9 mm is cheaper for practice and easier to find) BUT I still really like that little Mustang and carry it occasionally.
I carry the Mustang XSP basically the same platform, with polymer, and ambi safety. Great little gun in my mind, I'd stake my life on it any day of the week.
Good to hear; I just got my new-old-stock XSP this weekend. Been sitting on their shelf for six years! Been looking for something to give me zero excuses to keep on me all the time.
My daily carry gun. Love it. I have the Lightning which is a plus II version. Never jams. Shoots to point of aim as Hickock demonstrated. A really well made .380 that shoots like a larger gun.
I’ve had two of them and loved both.. Bought one in the 1980s. Sold in 2004 before moving to Washington state. 2013 moved to Tucson and bought a second. One. Fantastic gun.
I carry one....was my mother's carry, she is now 89yo....passed it to me when 82yo.....was used to an officer .45 (1911) when lived on boat offshore, along with AR-15 and .308 (first 2 rounds tracers, next few armor piercing. only one time used, found tracers ended threat)...found the Pocket-lite fits anywhere for true concealment and I proved can put multiple rounds within small inches from 20 paces. Not figuring to ever wage war, just personal protection.
I was on Bahama Bank, about 10nm south of Walkers Cay, anchored for night to approach Walker's in daylight...another boat pulled up about midnight....a VHF warning of Haitian poachers in area....about 2am, heard them dropping smaller boats into water.....I shot two tracers over their bow....heard them crank smaller boats back up and move off into the night. No radio traffic from them about it, pretty much proved ill intent to me. Next rounds were armor piercing and could be through hull, engine, etc.....gun was actually a WWII BAR....I bought it from a sailor, sold it to another sailor.
I have the Mustang XSP which has a polymer bottom. I carry it everyday and like it a lot. I did have 1 failure to feed but it was one-handed just like Hickok.
I bought one of these for concealed carry and it's great. I learned if I don't watch my grip, my left thumb gets slide bitten. But it's a nice, tight, easy to shoot little gun. Not a whole lot of kick. It doesn't beat up your hand.
This model was the very first carry gun I ever bought. Got it used for $275 probably 17-18 years back. While I carry others (G26 and jframe), I still carry this often, even today. I did replace the spring under the slide release about 10 yrs back after the slide started locking back while shooting. Only happened to certain friends and I could never figure out if they were limp-wristing or elevating the slide release with their grip while firing. To be sure, I replaced that spring even though it never happened to me. Have a great many rounds though it and, as I said, I still trust my life to it on occasion. Great gun.
I have an early Colt Pocketlite .380. It is a great little gun but I use it only as a back up. I know there are many shooters who carry .380's but I prefer a more powerful cartridge whenever possible. My EDC is an H&K USP Compact in .40 S&W. The .380 is certainly better than nothing and I will take it over a .32 ACP or .25 ACP anytime.
Was surprised at seeing your review of the 380 Pocketlite. You don't see/hear much about them. I own and carry the earlier version made before they discontinued them. I usually use a small belt holster but when I can't do that, fits in by back pocket just fine. Thanks for reviewing this reintroduced version.
I have one of these in the XSP variant. I absolutely love it. It actually replaced my G42 and my jframe for Pocket carry. But I usually carry 1911s so this fits the bill for me.
I owned one of the first production guns. I should have kept it. It was in my pocket all those dark nights in New Orleans.....years ago. It shot like a dream. I am now carrying a Kahr pm9. I like having 9mm. I would feel safe switching to one of these in a heartbeat, trigger is awesome.
I picked up this little Colt .380 today. Fantastic fit in the hand and it operates very smoothly. It does indeed feel and act like a baby 1911. I demoed heavily before I bought...started with the Beretta Pico, S&W M&P, Ruger LCP, Taurus and then Sig P238. Then finally the Colt came out (I had a bit of sticker shock so I put it off to last). After taking about an hour of time and making the poor salesman work for his check...I was on the fence between the Ruger and the Colt.I asked if they had each new in a box and they did. I asked to see the Colt and he scanned it at the register...and it was on clearance for just over half of MSRP! No idea why they didn't have that marked on the display. My decision was made in a flash. I walked away with it for just a hair over the price of the LCP.Gonna take it to the range tomorrow and run it through early breakin. My GF takes her CCW class in a few weeks and she will be using this little Colt to qualify.
From memory the original Mustang was the same as sold by Interarms. Both were manufactured by Star in Spain and re labeled in the USA once imported. Star model sold directly by star was the S1S .
for a colt collector its COOL and neat!! just like owning a python..just NEAT:):) no need to justify it at all to the collector:) also a even cooler colt 380 was the "government model" from the ninetys:)
I own this awesome little pistol! I own S/A XD45, Sig P220r 45, Colt Commander 45 and Ruger LC9S also. My wife likes shooting with me and has claimed the Mustang as hers and is her CC gun. Easy to handle, small and light weight which is important to her and she absolutely loves the 1911's! The recoil on my LC9S is too snappy for her and the 45's are a little too heavy (but she loves shooting them). This Mustang Pocketlite is the perfect gun for her. She can hit anything within 20 yards and close up it's spot on! Great little .380!!!
"I don't know of anybody I know that carries one of these." You do now. I've got an original edition and I carry it regularly; it requires little effort to keep it from printing, regardless of apparel. Cheers!
Got the XSP Colt which is the Polymer grip version of this. These are the top shelf of pocket guns. The competition isn’t the 42 at all. It’s the Sig238, Kimber Micro,Springfield 911 and the Colts better. In higher calibers the Colt commander elite in .45 and .9 are equally as awesome. But you want the best you’ll pay the money. The former pocketlite can be had for $650-$750 and the Commanders are $890-$1000 at GrabaGun and Cheaperthandirt.
I have both the Mustang "plus II" and two P238. I believe it's the other way around and the P238 is Sig`s version of the Colt Mustang. Love both. Would like to handle a SA 911, but presume it is virtually the same.
One of my recent purchases was a Colt Mustang XSP which, essentially, is the same pistol except it has a polymer frame. So far, it has performed flawlessly and its accuracy surpasses my expectations. As soon as I can find a pocket holster that suits me, I will probably begin "carrying" it on a regular basis.
Hick... I am so glad you videos are in HD. your videos are so clear compared to the majority of the other vids out there. Seems like Im right there with you. Neat !
FYI you can get the wrap around Hogue grip for the Sig p238 it is compatible with the Colt Mustang as well as the magazines are interchangeable from the Sig to the Colts, anyway the Hogue grip has a small finger choil below the trigger guard to get a better grip from your middle finger and a palm swell that allows your palm and 3rd finger to get a really good grip on it and it has a rubber-like pebble finish, it is an excellent grip!! I know them wooden grips sure look pretty on the P238 but when you feel the difference it seriously could be the difference of life and death because a semi auto needs a firm grip to allow the gun to cycle, if your grip isn't tight enough the recoil will allow the gun to shift and the slide won't retract all the way back and complete the cycle of blowback ejecting the spent case and reloading the next cartridge into the chamber,,,
I had the original colt mustang For 25 years Sold it for more then I paid for it then Then went thru 5-6 other pistols and hated them all So I bought the new Colt mustang and as a back up I bought the kahr cw380 and love them both Great pocket combos
I had an opportunity to handle one of these today at Field and Stream here in Dayton. LOVED it. If you are willing to pay for the Colt name, everything about this lil firearm is smooth and well worth the investment. Great gun, and I look to purchase one before year's end. Glad to see Hickok review it, that was just a nice little bonus!
Old video, but still a viable gun today. I carry this model in a Vedder kydex pocket holster, in and around my house. It’s always worked for me at the range and with all .380 ammo I’ve fed it. I used to carry Hydra shocks but moved to the 99gr HST’s in this gun. 6+1 is still better than OC spray at the front door.
If Colt had focused on building more things like this sooner they might not be in the pickle they are in. Its hard to imagine a gun maker with a name like Colt struggling in today's gun market, but they are. I hope they pull it out of the hat.
I bought a colt mustang back in 90 or 91. It was a great carry pistol till the first time I shot it at the range. Made my first shot and the magazine fell out and hit the ground! I had my gunsmith make an adjustment but I never shot it again. Had no confidence in it. That was the last and only colt I ever owned, I traded it in on a 9mm that never gave me any trouble.
I wouldn't mind owning one of those... I have never had the chance to fire a .380. Seems like this one is pretty solid and i like the yield for only a 7 Centimetre (2.75 Inch) barrel.
My principal CCW when we lived in the Republic of Panama 1990-94. Great in an ankle holster when driving or under tropical clothing. Brought in and out of the US on CBP 4457 form. Good for domestic air travel in checked luggage. Still have as my principal carry 30 years later mainly in a leather waist holster but have other speciality holsters as needed. No firing issues. Mr. Hickok right-on with sight assessment. Very poor for low light and night target acquisition. I initially purchased because the 12.5 oz weight appealed to me.
my mom bought a kel tec i told her i had one yrs ago but then she picked up the colt mustang and liked the feel of it in her hand she has a ladies smith 38 but said it was heavy anyway she ended up with kel tec and the colt i have got to teach her about semi auto loaders but i got good info from your video thanks a lot
my first pistol was an FN 1922 .380. loved it. the next one was a ruger blackhawk, 41 mag. quite an increase in size :) 380 gets put down like the .30 carbine, but both do work well.

i carry the colt mark iv government model 380. very accurate and pleasant to shoot. 7 + 1 and it fits in my pocket very comfortably. i can carry this all year long without any problems.
I have carried The mustang for three years now. I added a trace cri red dot sight made for kimberly 380 that works very well I Carry my mustang with one round in the chamber and six in the magazine and three magazine in front pocket. If I need to work I plan to get the job done.

Gramdfather left us his after he passed what an amazing pistol that i will care and cherish forever
I have one of these in the XSP variant. I absolutely love it. It actually replaced my G42 and my jframe for Pocket carry.
But I usually carry 1911s so this fits the bill for me.
Sweet Lil Colt Thanks for the video. Keep them coming. Thanks to you and your son for making the time doing your review's. Simple Enjoyment !!!
Ooooooh, this is the first tiny pistol that I actually love the look of!
I gotta get myself one in the future :)
I've owned one of these for 27 years and I love it my little .380 1911 colt
I owned one of the first production guns. I should have kept it. It was in my pocket all those dark nights in New Orleans.....years ago. It shot like a dream. I am now carrying a Kahr pm9. I like having 9mm. I would feel safe switching to one of these in a heartbeat, trigger is awesome.
Hugh Carmichael The safety on it made me feel better, I keep my kahr in a pocket holster.
I've got the .380 Plus 2 and love it. Never had an issue with it in 20+ years.
Me too! Plus 2 gang!
Hickok you have a very good place to review weapons the place amplifies the sound better than other UA-camrs
Love the pocketlite, and it´s a COLT !
You nailed it. I'm a 1911 kinda guy and I love my pocketlite
From memory the original Mustang was the same as sold by Interarms.
Both were manufactured by Star in Spain and re labeled in the USA once imported.
Star model sold directly by star was the S1S .
one of my favorite pistols. thanks for sharing.
for a colt collector its COOL and neat!! just like owning a python..just NEAT:):) no need to justify it at all to the collector:) also a even cooler colt 380 was the "government model" from the ninetys:)
As one old handgunner (w/big hands) to another I really enjoy your videos and hope UA-cam treats you right. Keep ‘em coming . . . .
Your videos are very informative about every weapon you shoot and fun to watch. Thanks!
She still liking it? I’m contemplating buying one, or maybe a colt defender 9mm
This is my carry gun and I love it. I like the rounded contours as well, it doesn't snag on anything.
There is a 7 round mag w/bump pad you can purchase for about $30. Awesome little firearm.
"I don't know of anybody I know that carries one of these."
You do now.
I had a Sig Sauer P238, myself. Loved that gun! This is essentially the Colt version of it.
Neat !
I have 2 of them, they are awesome!
I know them wooden grips sure look pretty on the P238 but when you feel the difference it seriously could be the difference of life and death because a semi auto needs a firm grip to allow the gun to cycle, if your grip isn't tight enough the recoil will allow the gun to shift and the slide won't retract all the way back and complete the cycle of blowback ejecting the spent case and reloading the next cartridge into the chamber,,,
I love my Mustang too . I like your videos and was happy to see you report on this much overlooked gun.
I had the original colt mustang
For 25 years
Sold it for more then I paid for it then
Then went thru 5-6 other pistols and hated them all
So I bought the new Colt mustang and as a back up I bought the kahr cw380 and love them both
Great pocket combos
I like that, "COLT AUTOMATIC PISTOL". I think I will buy one. My Brother. I.L. has one and it works flawless.
11:26 check out the mussel flash on that beast!
Thanks hickok! another awesome vid.
If Colt had focused on building more things like this sooner they might not be in the pickle they are in. Its hard to imagine a gun maker with a name like Colt struggling in today's gun market, but they are. I hope they pull it out of the hat.
Colt has been making these for 3 decades. Sweetest little auto I ever owned.
My dad owns a Taurus 380 and it's pretty powerful for its size. I like you're vids.
I look at allot of guys that put up vids but I keep finding I like this ol boy best. I like this pistol and also the Walther PPK
.380
Same. I have both and really like them both.
THANKS, I'm looking at one from Bud's !! nice pocket gun for sure.. Enjoyed the review, it helped me make the decision.
I love these things alot. It's fantastic to see one in action in capable hands.
These doubled in price in 6 years. Not bad ROI
I have the Mustang but on the slide it is called the Colt Mk IV Series 80. It is an older model. I looked it up on the Colt site. It is a 1991 model.
Have one of those two, great pocket gun
my mom bought a kel tec i told her i had one yrs ago but then she picked up the colt mustang and liked the feel of it in her hand she has a ladies smith 38 but said it was heavy anyway she ended up with kel tec and the colt i have got to teach her about semi auto loaders but i got good info from your video thanks a lot
my first pistol was an FN 1922 .380. loved it. the next one was a ruger blackhawk, 41 mag. quite an increase in size :) 380 gets put down like the .30 carbine, but both do work well.
Have this gun in the all stainless steel version. I love it!
2be Blunt I believe I got a great deal at $600. It really nice in the summer when I’m in shorts. I put it in a pocket holster and I’m good for the day. Enjoy!

@Jon SmithHi, liked your post because I think my 380 is older than these mustangs. Looks almost the same but I have a MK IV series 80. No plastic, built like a tank
I actually carry one everyday, I have the 80s series and it is incredibly reliable and accurate. Love the little thing.
i carry the colt mark iv government model 380. very accurate and pleasant to shoot. 7 + 1 and it fits in my pocket very comfortably. i can carry this all year long without any problems.
ive carried a 42 since it came out...this lil colt is really making me reconsider it
I almost bought one of these at a gun show back in the mid 80s. There was also a smaller one with a lanyard loop if I remember right.
coolest design for semi-auto
I have carried The mustang for three years now. I added a trace cri red dot sight made for kimberly 380 that works very well I Carry my mustang with one round in the chamber and six in the magazine and three magazine in front pocket. If I need to work I plan to get the job done.
Just bought one. Fantastic gun. Bud's are great to deal with. Federal is great ammo.
it has a tough trigger pull and if you keep your your trigger finger a little higher you can prevent it from being pinched
Its refreshing to listen to someone that's knows firearms. There's far to many morons doing firearm videos and the ill informed and down right ignorant advice they sprout is frightening and down right dangerous.
I don't like .380s, but man just for the name and the look I want it
fuzzylikelegos ull enjoy it
Colt is one of the best guns for resale because the name holds it's value better than most!
Was my back up piece for years. Great little gun.
