Young couple builds cozy home with indoor garden for $30K (Denmark)

  • When David Westervik left the Norwegian coastal city of Bergen to study architecture in Aarhus, Denmark, he decided to live in a small sailboat to save money and sail across the North Atlantic.
David used his boat-living experience to self-build with his partner Alessia a modular home as cozy and compact as the boat. The home is also capable of growing food and staying warm during the cold winter months of Denmark's Jutland. David used plywood and scrap materials to CNC-cut the structure, which cost the couple around 200,000 DKK (Danish Krone), or around $30K.
While writing his thesis on self-built architecture that can be easily moved and scaled, David came up with a modular system that can combine a scalable living space with a greenhouse that, in cold Scandinavia, serves as both an organic garden for food production and an indoor sunroom.
His GroHuse modular concept is inspired in the experience building their home: a small home that can be moved if necessary and easily adapted to different life stages, produced with non-toxic materials and ready for the most demanding climates.

    Smart Couple.
They seem to be made for one another.
Its so pleasant to see couples who are kind and considerate to each other.
When you dont put a fortune into a house, you are free to do so many other things.

Since I didn't see any solar panels or water catchment systems I'm gonna assume they're not off grid? After living on a boat this place must feel like a mansion. I'm always impressed when people have the confidence to undertake things by simply watching UA-cam videos.

It would have to be a generator or on grid due to the snow in winter (I'm assuming as the only panels I saw were on neighboring houses)

@@itsBIGTIMMYC There's honestly not much snow in Denmark these days, seeing as there's very little snow in far southern Sweden either. Think we had like 3 weeks of snow this winter, if even.

Tiny houses are 13.5 feet tall. I think people are always set on lofts, but there is an opportunity to have one level with 30 inch high crawlspace storage. And room for Eddy Munster overnight. 😂

'Friland' is a designated society/community where people can build experimental homes.
It is laid out from the beginning to be on grid. Most electricity in Denmark are from wind (and most heat from district heating from clean incineration of trash).

It’s so cool that they can literally pack up and move their entire set up somewhere else. Once there, they can then do additional modifications because it’s designed to be tweaked without major demo. That’s so much more logical. It would be cool to see their finished home project in the future. I love this show. It leaves me feeling inspired by the younger generation.

Yes I don't think this house would be allowed on a regular plot of land in Denmark but maybe they got a better plot in Friland. It's an eco village where people are allowed to build differently and experiment. The challenge with tiny houses is often where to put them - same is true in Denmark

  • @Tomsdatter

It is almost impossible to live 100% off the grid all year round in Denmark. Some do it in the summer, for example in an allotment house, but you are not allowed to live there in the winter. In Denmark, there are many regulations and environmental laws that must be complied with with regard to waste, sewage conditions and water. These conditions must be in order. There are solutions that can be installed and make it almost possible to be off grid in relation to water, electricity and sewage. But these solutions can be expensive to install. Therefore, some live off grid in Denmark illegally, others circumvent the laws by settling in another person's backyard.

This will be fascinating to follow up on in 5 or 10 years, especially after they move and if they have a few kids and build an addition. I can imagine a 2-story addition arranged in a T or L at the back of the house where they have their stairs and loft. You would need 3 bedrooms (masters bedroom, girls' bedroom and boys's bedroom big enough for bunk-beds), probably a 2nd bathroom and some sort of living room / play room area. The existing house would probably become the kitchen/dining/laundry area.
