Rollerblade Macroblade 100 3WD Inline Skate Review

  • The Macroblade 100 3WD by Rollerblade is a solid inline skate but for $320 there are better options available to be honest. In my opinion the Macroblade 80 or even the Zetrablade are a more intelligent choice for training. They do the same job, are more comfortable, lighter and cost less. If you're going to spend around $300 for a new pair of inline skates though the Macroblade 100 3WD is pretty sick.
    I found the Macroblade 100 3WD to be the fastest inline skate in the Rollerblade lineup.
    If you are looking for a 3WD inline skate with 100mm wheels the Macroblade 100 3WD is better than the competition (K2 V02 S100). The Macroblade 100 3WD is WAY more comfortable than the K2 V02 S 100.
    The Macroblade 100 3WD comes with 100mm 85A wheels paired with SG9 bearings which wear exceptionally well and provide reasonable value at this price point.
    NOTE: I am NOT an affiliate and didn't get JACK SHIT for doing this review. I am just an independent inline skate enthusiast who wants to help as many people as I can find the right rollerblades so they can get outside and be healthier by doing more cardio.

    Got a pair of these last week based on your suggestion from another video and I can say I absolutely love these skates! I have a lot of experience from playing roller hockey and ice hockey and these were the perfect choice to get back into it! I will admit, the first day I was a little nervous I had to be conscious of my balance and how sore my lower leg muscles got, but I have already done six 4+ mile skates and it is just like I never stopped skating. Also, using three wheels for the first time, they are perfect for riding on asphalt roads around me and I LOVE the speed when bombing hills. Thanks again for commenting back on your other video and recommending these!

      Kevin! That's awesome to hear!! Had a feeling with your experience level you'd master the 3WD in one session and be ripping around. I love these ones too for urban/city sessions where quick unexpected turns and bursts of acceleration are needed. Excited for you man, finding a sweet new pair of skates is the best. Get crazy workouts in that feel like fun and not work, it's the best. Thanks for coming back to let me know, enjoy!!!

    Thanks for the review! Skated a bunch when I was younger also played roller hockey quite a bit so im a seasoned skater, got mine stolen along with my car years ago and been wanting a pair for a while and decided on these. They are comfortable and stable definitely a good quality skate for the money considering I got them on sale at 230 out the door including tax would def recommend! Cant say if these would be good for someone starting or with moderate skill as I didnt find them much different from my older 4 wheeled inlined skates I had but then again that was 5 years ago and hadnt been on inlines since but since I skated so much in my life it was as they say “ridding a bike” for me, definitely smoother on rougher roads cause of the size of the wheels. Size runs true im an 11 and 11 was perfect!

    Thanks for making this video. I recently bought a set of Zetrablades to see if inline skating was for me. Well, it definitely is, I love it! And after a few hundred K's and some worn wheels I'm looking to upgrade. It was nice to hear you say my skate is comparable to ones twice the price. I may just upgrade my wheels to some quality options (Hydrogen) and run them longer. I do notice some ankle flex as my skills develop, but they're still stable. I thought about going hard shell, but I really like the comfort. Thanks again!

      Awesome! Love hearing this. Skating is the best workout that doesn't feel like work! I think your plan to upgrade your wheels is a solid one, I still run an old pair of zetrablade in the shoulder seasons too! I tried going to hard boot and they are just so uncomfortable. Some people like them tho, so if you try them get a used pair or buy them from a place with a good return policy. Thank you for your comment!!

    Gonna get back into skating. I live in NYC so i'd primarily be on sidewalks, streets and bike paths. These are going for pretty cheap.. around 150 now and the fact you mention the wheels lasting longer than what i've heard about the 80s or Elites is kind of selling me on the 100s. I might get these, unless you have another pair with smaller wheels that will last just as long? Plan to skate every other day few miles or km

      Get these. For sure. They're amazing for urban skating. I'd get some backup wheels at the same time. The stock ones are pretty hard and wear quickly...but once I swapped then out with better ones these became my favorite city skates for sure. For the money you can't beat them. 4,000kms on mine and still going.

For starters the boot was not as comfortable as I thought as they silly pushed into the sides. Then there was little ankle support I was all over the place like a newbie. 100mm wheels are fast and the ride is a little smoother. 4 wheels are faster top speed in a straight line and 3 wheels are easier to corner, stop and accelerate (in a nut shell). Hope that helps! Thanks again

I liked the look and the way it handles the street, but they arent comfortable, especially when standing still. When coasting, my feet want to lean to the outside. Also, I HATE LACE-ON SKATES!!! I bought the macroblade 100 3wd recently, after only 50 km of skate the skates make a clicking noise. I don't know if it's the bearings or the blade ... The skates hurt my left ankle. Not sure if it's generalized, but wanted to let buyers know.

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you for sharing your experience Benoit!
      They should not make a clicking noise like that. This has happened to me once before and it drove me crazy. I took the wheels off of the skate and found a little tiny metal wire had gotten trapped between the bearing spacer and the frame. It looked like a frayed piece of wire from a bike brake cable or something. Super weird. Try taking the wheels off and having a look. If this doesn't solve the problem it's probably a faulty bearing and in that case I'd contact Rollerblade and let them know. They probably won't do anything for you but it's worth a try. Or take them back to the store. About your left ankle, when you're doing these skates up you have to really watch the tongue doesn't slip to the side with this lace system. This kept happening to me so I took out the super thin laces and replaced them with shoe laces. Still have to watch the tongue but it helps a lot. Hope that helps you somewhat, and I hope you get those problems fixed so you can enjoy your blades! Thanks for commenting have a good one!

    Just a comment about bearings: I just got a brand new women's pair of Macroblade 100 3WD (probably the last pair of them in North America in my size--stock for inline skates is really low right now!) and tried them today and found them to be quite slow (compared to the 80mm 4-wheel Salomon TR9's I've had for years, that just broke). The quality of my old Salomon skate was incredible, with custom liner and all high quality components (paid $500 years ago and worth every penny because they've lasted so long). So I swapped out the Macroblade SG9 bearings and put in the (approx 1 year old) Bones bearings I had in my TR9's and the Macroblades are definitely faster now, but surprisingly, not as fast as my old 80mm wheel skates, nor as smooth....boo). Nothing is made like it used to be!! I'm an ex-ski racer and aggressive skater, and I've clocked myself in our complex speed sign at 33km/h with the Salomon's, and the fastest I could get going today with the Macroblades was 26km/h. It is a bit colder today, so that could have factored in, but I still would have expected a big increase in speed with the larger wheels.... Anyway, if people want a more fun ride, I'd suggest swapping out the bearings to something else, I wasn't so impressed with the SG9's. Thanks for the review though, it certainly helped me narrow down which to try. The K2 VO2 S100 was going to be in the running, but they still don't have stock anywhere. These Macroblades will do--but I will miss my Salomon's!! :(

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  3 роки тому

      Thank you for this comment Marci! I really should have went into more detail about the bearings. I find the SG9's on my 3wd 100's to be ok, but the ILQ-9 bearings in my K2's are noticeably faster as well. That's awesome you were able to swap yours out. One thing I have noticed with all of my macroblade skates is that on cold days they glide with a lot more resistance leading me to believe that the bearing lube they use in the SG's is very temperature sensitive. I wonder if you tried them again on a warm summer day if they would perform better. That's super disappointing for brand new bearings, if it were me I would open them up and relube them...or return them. Returning them is not a great option though as like you said they are becoming extremely hard to find already this season as people are scrambling to find fitness equipment again as the gyms remain closed. But to your point, the fasest I've ever been able to go on my macroblade 100's is about 33kph...but on my k2 v02's i hit 43.6kph a few weeks ago! Same diameter wheels very similar conditions...a huge difference. www.strava.com/activities/5210702532

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  3 роки тому

      Hopefully re-lubing your SG9's helps a bit, or hopefully your old bearings from your Salomon's continue working well for you and you can keep the SG9's as spare. What did you think of the wheels on the 3WD's? I find the 85A's incredibly hard. Seriously considering swapping them out for slightly softer wheels and possibly ILQ-9 bearings if possible. Thanks again for your insightful comment and hope you have a great season of skating!

    • @marcijanecek4913
      @marcijanecek4913 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheLastHonestInfluencer Thanks for the feedback. I did a little test with my Bone bearings vs the SG9's. I spun how long the 100mm wheel stayed in motion when hand spun, and I know even sounding a tiny bit gritty. It was like there was no resistance on the Bone bearings, but the SG9's were already starting to slow down almost seconds after I spun them. (I videoed the difference, I'd post it here if I could!)
      I didn't notice the 85A's to be too bad--maybe a tiny bit more slick when doing my sharp slalom turns, but I usually find that until I wear the wheels down a little bit on the sides. I usually use 82A and that seemed to be perfect. I did notice that overall, my ride was a bit less smooth than I'm used to with my Salomons, but they overall had a better frame (I think it even has a bit of a dampener) than the Macroblade I think, so it could partly be that.
      I was initially thinking I'd get the K2's, but it sounds like they have no idea when they'll actually get stock and I figured I'd better snag this last pair of Macroblades or I'll spend the summer skateless or having to buy a slow pair that will drive me nuts from Sportcheck. Lol. And it sounds like comfort is a bit of an issue. I'm seriously jealous of your speed on your K2's though! I was hoping I'd be a bit faster with these new ones, but looks like maybe not. I'll try it all again on a warmer day and see how it goes. It just feels overall like I have a bit more resistance than I'm used to (rather than gliding and feeling like I'm not slowing down in the slightest with each stride, I feel a little bit of slowing...just a bit). I realize I can get something faster by moving more to a race skate or even the Macroblade 110's but I love just slaloming my way down a road too, so I don't want to get a longer frame and lose maneuverability.
      Enjoy your season as well! I'm just happy I found something acceptable. I was going to be a sad camper if I missed this season completely! Thanks again for your helpful reviews, they definitely helped me figure out what I should get.

      @@TheLastHonestInfluencer Also forgot to add, I didn't find any learning curve to switching to the 3 wheels as I figured I might. I spoke with a salesperson who said I'd probably dislike them, but didn't find that at all. A very slight change in my weight transition timing when slaloming, but no change with straight-aways. Seem just about as maneuverable as my old Salomon (that has a slightly shorter frame), so was very happy about that. :)

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  2 роки тому +1

      Interesting! It sure feels like it and that would explain the increased shock and vibration transfer from bumps. Really liking these skates after a summer on the (approx 1500km) but they ride so much rougher than any other pair. They work ok for skating backwards (better than my 4 wheel 100mm) but I don't do it very often as I skate more for fitness than tricks or play. Cheers!

      Thank you and greetings from Canada! Honestly I would try to go with an 82A or softer wheel for anything other than new blacktop asphalt. I skate with the 85A's on fairly new asphalt pathway dedicated for bicycles and there are a few concrete bridges and road intersections where it gets quite bumpy...on the 85A's I find it painful and jarring on my feet and joints. When I skate the same pathway in my other two pairs that both have 82A wheels it is significantly more enjoyable and comfortable. If your only choice is an 85A it will work...but if you have an option for a softer wheel based on the conditions you've described I would definitely go for it. Hope that helps! Thank you and great question! If you are skating in the 1003WD for fitness I would say the safe bet is 42 1/2. Two reasons: 1. for soft boot fitness skates slightly more room in the toe box is far preferable than not enough and 2. when you're skating in a mostly straight line forward direction if they are too big you wont even notice.
      If it were a hard boot for trick skating I'd say take the chance and go too snug they will break in (but it will hurt for the first month or two).

      Sweet! You're going to fly on 110's, even my 100's are so much faster than the 80's it's a joke. I think those will be great for cross training, just make sure you're always in the zone and you'll be fine. I find when I cross train in my 100's and I get into a good groove I can come up on joggers and bikers so fast (and so quietly) that they don't even realize they're in the way and about to get plowed until the last second so it's awesome you have a path without lots of other people. It is more motivating to go for a skate when you get to cruise as fast as the 100's and 110's can get going. I think you're going to have a blast man. Enjoy! I like your style man! I’m looking for a nice roller blade that gives support and not have to worry about a rock jamming my wheels out. I heard the 3 wheels are better over obstacles than the standard 4 wheels. Softer wheels are better handling, No? So I want to stay around $300 and less if possible but if there is a pair of blades that you think are worth it I’d like your input. It’s literally been decades since I played roller hockey on the street as a kid. I like the 3 wheel advantage of going over rougher surfaces without a wheel getting locked up. I’m going to be using these for the bike path… depends on my skill as I was thinking of joining a over 40 roller hockey league. I just turned 41 2 days ago so while I’m not fat I could definitely use a tone. I haven’t seen a muscle since 1998… thank you in advance for any help
    Edit: Would it be worth getting new wheels… I heard the Hydra wheels are really good. I definitely would want a softer wheel for comfort and like you said agility on the bike path. I think this could be a healthy hobby for me. I’m definitely going to watch some of your other reviews. Which pair of blades is your go to, like number one in terms of quality, performance and comfort?

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer

      Thank you brother! I do find my 3 wheeled skates handle rocks and twigs better than the 4. I've had a few jams at speed with the 4 but never on the 3. The softest wheels I use are 82a as any softer than that and they wear out way too fast. Wheels harder than 85a aren't very comfortable even on fairly smooth paths (for me). 82a is the sweetspot imo.
      Sounds like you want something like the Macroblade 100 3WD. I tried to get my hands on the K2 version to try them but they sold out in my size before I could order a pair so I can't recommend them in a meaningful honest way. They're probably just as good albeit less comfortable.
      Inline skating is the perfect way to stay in shape man. Turned 40 this year too so shit is getting real in the staying strong and healthy department. Gotta work at it to stay fit now, used to be so much easier. Highly recommend you get some blades and start going as often as possible. It's the perfect form of cardio, low impact and so easy to do low intensity steady state workouts which are the best for burning fat and toning up.
      If I could only pick one pair to use it would be the Macroblade 100 3WD or the Macroblade 80 even split. Both are super comfy, can skate every day for an hour in either. I like them both for different reasons but based on what you've said you'll be happier with the 3WD.
      I've never tried the Hydra's but they do seem to have great reviews. I'm super wary of good reviews now tho so until I use them I can't honestly comment. The wheels that come stock on the Macroblade 100 are brutally hard (85a) so based on what you've said it's a great idea to buy another softer set. Keep the stock wheels as backup, you'll probably end up using them eventually or you could sell them on eBay. They are in very short supply this year and would probably sell really quickly!
      Hope that helps man! Any other questions fire away! Have a good one, -Jamie

    Well darn it...kind of. I saw a few of your videos about other skates which you generally didn't recommend over the Macroblade line-up, so bought/ordered these today before seeing this video. It seems like your only real dislike tho is the cost. Well, I grabbed a new (open-box) pair for $167 shipped. The current retail seems to be $229-$259. At that price point compared to 2023 skates, would you say they are still over-priced?

Compare that to my k2 VO2 which were destroyed from 2 years same distance (and twice the cost). $167 is a STEAL! I’d even pay $250 for another pair. Congratulations on your amazing new skates! Hi buddy, and thank you for the objective reviews. I'd like to ask if you think these would be suitable for a semi-beginner? I used to goof around with a pair or inline skates 25-odd years ago but not in any serious capacity, and thought of picking them up again - just worried that 100mm wheels might be hard to handle and I'd wind up smeared on the asphalt when things go wrong!

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  3 роки тому +5

      Hey brother! If you've skated before 100mm should be fine, just take it easy and use the brake for the first bit while you're getting used to them. Stepping up from 80mm to 100mm was pretty exciting for me speed wise, but to be honest I can almost cruise as fast on my old 80mm now that they have brand new wheels and bearings. The biggest thing I notice now that I'm used to them is that the 100mm just cruise so much nicer, they are way less jarring and bumpy. The trade off is they are a bit less responsive and slower to corner tho. If you want to go far in a straight line go for the 100mm, if you're doing shorter skates with lots of corners 80mm. Hope that helps! It's tricky to make a perfect recommendation without knowing all your variables but my gut instinct response for you is 100mm ha ha. Hope that helps man! Happy skating!!

    So what are your thoughts on these for bike paths that aren't really all that well maintained. My brother has been blading for years and said the only path we have in our city has tons of pebbles and sticks and debris on it, basically the entire length, as well as not being the most well maintained with some rough patches. Will the larger wheels and big gap of these things help eliminate some of the issues with those types of things in my path? The path is 48km long, so I will never run out of space, and very straight for the most part... but I was concerned that with smaller wheels and small gaps, that i may run into some issues... quite literally. Appreciate any thoughts you may have on this.

    • @TheLastHonestInfluencer
      @TheLastHonestInfluencer  3 роки тому +6

      Hi Todd, larger wheels definitely help as will wheels 82a hardness and less. As for the gaps, I find that my 100mm 4 wheels skates handle bumps and rocks a little better than my 100mm 3WD. It's rough going on my 80mm skates on anything other than fresh blacktop now. It's nice that your path is so long, kind of a bummer about the debris. I find the 85a wheels on the macroblade 100 3WD make skating over debris or gaps in the pavement pretty jarring compared to my other skates with 82a and 83a wheels. Big difference.
      Hope that helps man! Happy skating
      I took matters into my own hands on a nice long path in my city that was covered with gravel in patches. This model for sure. At the time of filming this review I had only skated about 100km on them...since then I've put about 500-600km on them and now that I'm used to the less stable feeling of the 3WD I like them a lot more.
      That being said after having skated a few 3WD skates for distance/fitness I honestly prefer my 4WD skates. I find 4WD's to be faster, more stable and they transfer vibration a lot less.
      When I'm skating less than an hour on a path with lots of tight corners and that requires me to turn around a lot I use my 3WD's. When I'm skating for over 20km and over one hour on paths that are longer and more straight I prefer the 4WD's for sure.
      Hope that helps! I can probably offer more meaningful or helpful advice on which pair are the best for you if I know your main goal in skating (distance you want to go, how fast, lots of corners/weight loss/build leg muscle etc) and what kind of surfaces you're skating on. Keen to offer any assistance I can! At the end of the day they all do pretty much the same thing, different models are just slightly better at some things than others. I agree with you on the bearings and wheels. This pair have turned out to be one of the best I've owned. 2,000kms on them last season and they're going strong. Upgraded the wheels to powerslide infinity and ilq9 classic plus. They skate like a dream now.
