I agree with the Tau assessment. I have a friend that picked them as their first army and it hindered their growth as a player since they never practiced the combat step.
when i was 17 i bought some orks, some as in like 100 ork boys, killa kans, deffkoptas to name a few. painted 10 ork boys and i didnt bother with the rest till recently. im 40 now, had to scrup the paint off them 10 😂 if i chose a starting army now it would be world eaters.
Tau are arguably one of the most diverse armys. Kroot charge and melee. Crisis suits and vespid deepstrike. And stealth suits pathfinders and ghostkeels infiltrate. They have everything
The Kroot have absolutely changed the name of the game for T'au, they used to be a straight up gun line and no good for new players because they'd never get any experience with the charge, but I think that they are probably a much better choice now.
I started playing 40K back in the Rogue Trader days (1992), when there really wasn't much to choose from and miniatures weren't nearly as expensive; so perhaps my perspective is a bit skewed. Regardless, over those 32+ years, this is the order of armies I've built and played: 1. Space Marines (1992) 2. Eldar (1993) 3. Imperial Guard (1996) 4. Tau (2006) 5. Orks (2022) IMHO, the most flexible army are my Eldar. However, they were very difficult to collect and paint.
I'm the insane person who got tau as thier first, saw cool mining weopons and got GSC as a second and then used brood brothers as an excuse to get a bunch of guard.
I started with Blood Angels, it was a good start because they value the shooting and combat phases pretty equally. Then I started Aeldari, and that taught me to value cover and positioning, because they definitely do NOT tank attacks like Space Marines do
Dang i just finished build/painting and learning Grey Knights, spent like $500 bucks on everything and had no clue they were tagged for an update soon. I pray I can get some resell value on anything that isn't in the codex after their revamp. I only play friendly games so i doubt my friends will force me to upgrade but it would be sad to see some of my forces phased out.... i didn't know this happened in Warhammer. I'll stop buying more models and just hold the line until the update i guess....
Custodes is to me the safest pick : easy to paint, fairly big models with easy assembly but small bits to teach you that part of modeling, insanely cheap, really teaches the game well.
Honestly if you're a new player don't overthink it play the army you want to play and you're going to learn it it's not rocket science it's a game we're grown men painting up figures and go pew pew pew
Too late, I started with the Adeptus Mechanicus because they cool as folk. If i had the choice i wouldnt be entirely made of meat anymore. 7k points deep now. XD I also have knights, space marines, tyranids and tau :D
I completely agree with you on the Admech. I'm the same way. The only thing that keeps me from building them is the price tag. Tau are the army I'm collecting now and Knights are probably going to come after that.
i'm coming back to Warhammer after like two decades and wanted to start an White Scars army. i'm a little confused now lol, did they got updatet recently or should wait ?
New rules for Admech hit a couple of weeks ago in the 2024 July update - they are in a way better place now, even if they aren’t completely fixed and still feel hoardy for my liking.
I bought one unit of Gray Knights back in the day. Have they indicated they're going to get wiped out or that they're getting an update that may limit options?
I started with grey knights due to loving there lore, I technically started in 9th but have only truly played tenth. I can tell you they play well and the models are fine, I hope the range refresh happens soon but know it might take a while
They are an awesome lore army. The only reason I worry is starting someone just before the refresh sucks. It happened to me with the Primaris marines as a White Scars player.
I'm gonna be pissed if Grey Knights aren't redone next year. I wanna collect them and I have the old boarding patrol but I can't commit if they're gonna be redone in 2025. Especially after the agents of the imperium tie in.
I disagree with why you say tau are a bad beginner army they were my 1st army and becoming a good tau player requires using the charge phase a lot and how can you say they don’t deep strike? Every single edition tau are deep strike heavy! Tau can shoot out of combat and ignore the penalty for doing so while benefiting from the -1 to hit and don’t have a durable objective holder meaning you need to play interference and can shut down opposing shooting units with charges plus it’s free movement. Tau are not beginner friendly because they require so much knowledge of what your opponents army does and how to position correctly against them
I'm curious - which faction match-ups make fir the longest games, and which make the shortest, quickest games? I assume the big horde factions take a bit longer, but just curious.
Yeah, hordes generally take the longest, or armies with too many different unit types with different rules. I have had some pairings that just drag out because the armies just seem to cancel each other out and it takes a while to find the winner.
Have just been getting back into the hobby after 20 years.... Picked up some votann infantry mainly to practice my painting with the possibility of building an army if i vibe with them. Keep finding myself drawn to grey knights though haha even if its just a matter of time before they get an update. Think i will just follow my enthusiasm rather than build an army i am not 100% stoked on. Worst case is i should be decent at painting grey knights by the time the new models have arrived .
🤷 I am new to Warhammer and just bought two grey knight combat patrols just to paint as I've never painted miniatures before but I liked their look. So if they update them I'll probably either sell them or just build a display for them and then try to save up for the new ones😅
Kroot currently have the model with the worst points-to-dollars ratio - 35 points per krootox rider will cost you $45 (USD) - looks incredible, but those new sculpts are NOT cheap.
@@alexandrudorries3307 hunting down a Kroot hunting pack box is always an option. You could also go for carnivores or other better points per euro units though.
A honorable to Necrons. I love there look and lore kinda a coo. But as a beginner in modeling I keep breaking the damn things. I think I have one Necron Warrior left and that is because its still on the spure
Too true. I started building with the 9th edition starter set and just that squad was annoying, I can't imagine a whole army. But lore and finished models are very cool with them.
Soon is to be retired : it is maybe wrong but this is why I did not buy a landraider and I use just repulsors. My problem is : it is vey easy to know with space marine, I just buy primaris model. However for tyranid for example, I don't know if a a model is about to be legend.
I chose sisters as my first army. They play just fine... But by the Emperor, i picked one of the WORST armies of all to start out painting. They are brutal.
@@ReadersThatWargame It's the good old space wolves CP because it is similar to the old ravenguard army box set. Then I got the vanguard spearhead and that is the core of the army right there. Tau’s my first army and it sounds like you don’t know how Tau plays lol. This is misleading. Yes they are difficult to start with, but that’s because they are just a complex faction that doesn’t just use raw strength like most factions. Instead of stat lines and keywords, you have to synergies your units together to create “combos” in your plays that get the job done. But I constantly nuisance charge with battlesuits, infantry when it’s appropriate, and certain vehicles for tank shock. I play tau, grey knights and votann for 40k and ogors and skaven in aos!
I also have a small "knights army" to ally with my grey knights
