The industry, as a whole, has got to find a way to influence young people and make motorcycles a bigger part of our culture again. And I’m not talking about just trying to convince a 22 year old to buy a motorcycle. I’m talking about influencing kids from an early age. Kids don’t even ride bicycles like they used to.

With a bad economy, you have to be smart business wise. HD is not! They are seeing their base dying off. They have spent too much time trying to draw in younger riders and failing, and in so doing alienating what is left of their base before they die off. Previously they spent too much time drawing in the yuppie crowd who were buying bikes just to say "I have one" and now while the used market (of low mileage bikes) is over saturated they are redesigning their bikes and few are enthused. It has been a good five years since I walked into an HD showroom and saw anything that peaked my interest enough to give up my 19 year old bike. Also doesn't help that they no longer put price tags on anything and when you ask how much for this bike, you get an answer like "Oh, between $25K and $32K, it all depends." Ok, well which is it, $25K or $32K. And again "Well it all depends." Translation; "You'll get a definitive number once you sit down, get a credit check and we figure out how much we can squeeze out of you." With this economy, I would buy Used hands down. And I hate to say it, but if I got the notion to go New, you just might find me talking to Indian.

HD has been ignoring the very things they should have been paying attention to, the biggest one being price. HD should have released more low cost options based on their new Revolution Max motor. Not releasing the Street Fighter was a mistake. The Nightster and the Sportster S are great beginner options, but still cost too much.

I live very close to the Chrysler/Harley Davidson proving grounds in Yucca Arizona. About a year ago Harleys contract came up and they did not renew it and moved out. They told their employees they were moving to another location in southern Arizona. My friend was a sales rep in Yucca and rented a house at their new location. He was told last week that he had been laid off after many years of service. He said many more were going to.

Harley’s biggest problem right now is they don’t have a cheap motorcycle. They did away with the cheap air cooled goodlooking sportster. You could buy a new 883 for 8500 bucks. Now their cheapest bike I think is around 15 grand. The sportster S has not sold well. Harley’s big push is get them on a bagger. They did away with a ST model to push those customers to the expensive CVO ST. No point in owning a CVO anymore they killed that. They so common now there nothing special about owning one these days. They priced the youth out. Someone like me is highly considering my 4th one my last one at only 45. My 23 ST is going to probably be my last Harley. Between parts and labor the working class man cannot afford to own one anymore.

What year was the Iron 883 $8500? I mean the last year they were made, 2022 they were retailing between $9500-$11000 ish depending on the dealer. Look at car prices now and especially the pickup market. I was told the EVO engine wouldn’t comply with the new EPA standards. As sad as it was to see it go I am sure Harley Davidson determined it was too expensive to develop a new engine to replace the EVO. What they would have to sell the bike for no one would buy a sportster at that price.

They should consider a different way to grow their business. Instead of cutting employees because their bikes aren’t selling, they need to find ways to decrease consumer costs to stimulate demand. I thought that they were on the right path when they lowered touring bike prices with the debut of the new Road & Street glides coming in lower than the’23 models, but over the past decade they’ve cut their own throats by raising prices through the roof. They have also adopted other practices that are a real turnoff to bikers. Specifically, when you order a replacement part, rather than providing the associated hardware, (nuts and bolts,) they make you purchase each nut and bolt individually. If Harley Davidson wants to survive, they need new leadership with a more consumer friendly approach to marketing and sales.

Not a Harley-Davidson problem it’s an US economy problem. My company, a big airline, just suspended hiring through the rest of the year. High interest rates, supply problems and high operating costs for most companies. Motorcycles are discretionary income for the most part. They are not considered main transportation. Everyone says Harley-Davidson are to expensive. Sure they are, so are pickup trucks and my groceries. What do the experts on here consider an appropriate price in 2024 for a Softail or Touring bike? Harley-Davidson couldn’t make a motorcycle that cheap and make any money. They are a company that has to make a profit. Geez everyone thinks a bagger should be the same price it was 20 years ago.

HD has completely misread and mis-timed the market. Their CEO and board are running it into the ground. The response of "we have a duty to our share holders" is a lie, they actually feel they have a duty to their share sellers.

That Sportster wouldn’t be $8500 now. If it was, it would so stripped down and cheaply made no one would buy it. The sportster line needed a new engine to comply with US and European emissions.
You realize when a company offers a promotional finance rate that is lower than the market they are losing money. It only done periodically to spark sales. It is not sustainable because Harley-Davidson is borrowing the money to. The automobile manufacturers do the same thing.

@jagjr6772 sportster was always fantastically over priced and last I checked, I'm in America. I'm not saying HOG finance should be lower than the discount rate. But when HOG finance is offering 13% to someone with an 800+ credit rating and credit unions are offering 6%...and banks are offering 7.95%, thats on Harley.

A customer with a good credit rating can get competitive financing anywhere if they really wanted to buy the motorcycle. I blame Hollywood. Easy Rider, C.C. and Company, Streets of Fire, Etc., all ran in theaters in the spring and Motorcycle sales spiked. Now we do not have any Harley centered Bike films (Maverick should have up graded to a Fatboy). Austin' Butler's new flick "Bike Riders" may spark some new inspiration for American males to ride again; Let's hope so. It also wouldn't hurt if the Motor Company would produce some more Economically Friendly Models instead of their of entry levels models retailing for over ten grand. Harley Davidson is should not be a premium brand; it should be "Every Man's" Motorcycle.

  • @retiredarmyvet2018

The issue is Harley is not and has never been marketed towards 20 year olds. 95% of Harley riders started on sport bikes. Mainly because sport bikes are cheaper, sexier, faster and easier to handle. Then when the rider got older and couldn't ride a sport bike anymore they moved onto either a sport touring bike or if the had the money to a Harley. Another issue is Harley has reputation of being the brand of fat middle age riders that just bar hope and call their girl friends and or wives "Old ladies" and those old ladies are fat tattooed tank top wearing hags. Lastly, the fact that the joke "HD stands for hundred dollars, because that is what you spend every time you go into the shop" is not a joke because it's true. Is a major issue. The fact that dealerships try and sell T-shirts for $50 is pure insanity.

I think people are buying because I don’t have any money or I don’t have any credit. Yes I think this is a horrible economy. It’s probably the worst we’ve ever seen yet. With that being said, I was at the Harley dealership last couple days( Thursday and Saturday). Just checking things out, I happen to notice a lot of leftover 23’s and not very much foot traffic. I noticed a few sales people on the phone making phone calls, and I can see the look of anxiety on their face. One thing that I find extremely odd at some of these dealerships there’s no bikes in the parking lot only trucks. How is a guy that drives a truck and convinced me on the motorcycle lifestyle. You are, so where’s your bike. And I’ll come back as well. I didn’t ride it today.

Motorcycles are losing their appeal. Older riders are just that. Getting older and riding less. Young people could care less about riding cross country. India sells a lot of bikes but people over there can't afford cars and bikes are cheap. Not many people these days can spend 20k plus on a bike

Five years ago the stock price traded higher then today, not a good sign. Factor in a horrible economy, extremely high interest rates, reduced discretionary income; HD wishes sales will be flat to down 10%. More likely double that. Reducing costs with layoffs always results with Wall Street being happy.

Sure they are expensive. Do you have a price in mind what they should be selling them for? After running a company they have to have some kind of profit. I just wonder what price motorcycle should Harley-Davidson use on each model? Are you making comparisons to Honda, Indian, BMW etc.and their prices, are they "cheap"?

I watch your channel because you nudged me to ride to and in the Ozarks. Wonderful experience and I look forward to returning, especially the Eureka Springs area. Also you have brought H-D ownership, Company/dealership business and marketing conversations early to the riders/consumers that have proven to be useful, so folks are given the opportunity to make informed decisions. I bought my 19th Harley-Davidson recently, a 2022 LiveWire One. This choice hits me differently than most H-D owners, because I haven't owned anything other than a motorcycle for my personnel transportation for over twenty years. I knew several years ago that the LiveWire One was in my future, so when I purchased a new 2020 FLSL I knew it was going to be my last air cooled vTwin and I also knew that it would be the Motor Companies' last air cooled vTwin that they would develop. I say all this to encourage you and my fellow Harley owners, "temper what you want, to allow you to, get in the moment, know the situation, and take advantage of what is available. The perception that Harley’s have gotten more expensive is wrong. Factoring inflation and they actually cost less. The problem is that people are not riding and everything else costs a lot more.

We’re living in a “wimp” generation and young men simply do not gravitate to motorcycles, and those who do do not gravitate towards a Harley. Far too manly/macho of a bike for the Woke generation. that said, Harley is doing Zero in my opinion to get influencers to help create the need that gets the young people wanting to ride. Harley got this for free back in the 1980s which caused the Harley comeback as movie stars, sports stars and “Rich urban bikers“ all wanted to be seen on a Harley Davidson. They need to create a social media buzz and even pay celebrities and influencers to ride.

    • @RidingintheOzarks
      @RidingintheOzarks  3 місяці тому

Well they are definitely working with influencers more but I am not sure paying them is the answer, people tend to lose confidence in paid spokesmen. I definitely feel we need more kids on 2 wheels to develop potential riders in the future.

Harley is Nascar. A niche product, they dramatically ramped up production in the last ~30 years and expected to go mainstream. In half of the US you get about 3-4 months of decent riding weather and new Harleys are like 20k+. Not really shocked.

Harley has lots 50% sales in the last 10 years and it's not stopping. We pay premium prices for not so premium bikes. Competitors sell for less with more options on the bikes. Their factory's look old, if you look at say bmw, their factory is fenomenal very high tech. Cheaper to produce that way.

There was a time even a blue color working guy could buy a new Harley Davidson. But they raised the prices by a $1000,- every year in the last decades, so now they are out of customers.
