she has three albums, melo is the 2nd. pure heroine is first and was written when she was 15-17 it's very much a teenage coming of age album and if you listen to it with that nostalgic point of view it's terrific and it's also my favorite of hers lol. the new one is solar power which was pretty controversial because her sound changed a lot but it's very mellow and introspective and she seems like she's in a happy positive place now. would love more lorde on patreon in the coming months!
I understood "perfect places" as the standards in life that you're expected to meet. Like your ideal self at a certain age per society's terms or family, or even one's self. Late teens/early twenties is the stage where you shape your identity, choose the right career, think of your future etc, but it's also a point in life where there's so much pressure that you've never been more confused about yourself, hence the partying. I'm probably over analyzing it, but I took "perfect places" to mean one's security or their escapism🤷♂️
SO GLAD YOU LOVED MELODRAMA!!!!! Its my favorite album ever, to me, album of the year in 2017! She explored so many different sounds and mixes that weren't even explored at the time and that are still used as references today.
the narrative of the whole melodrama album is about the experience of a party start to finish (e.g. green light, sober, homemade dynamite - start of party; sober ii, liability ii - wrapping up the party) but also maps the course of a whole relationship (e.g. green light, sober, homemade dynamite - the excitement, the louvre = the romance, liability, hard feeling/loveless, writer in the dark = relationship hardships, perfect places = starting again). SO the album shows the parallels between the course of a party and the course of the relationship. And so Perfect Places is the perfect finale cos the "perfect place" is both the perfect party and also the perfect relationship, and essentially "what the fuck are perfect places anyway" is the ultimate conclusion.
@@graemehenderson1743 The album was released when she was 16, she couldn’t have written all of those songs in a year. Pretty sure some of them were written when she was a little younger
She's tired of searching for something that doesn't exit. We think the perfect lover is out there, the "one" for us. So we keep looking. We travel the skies, and the seas. Perfect place isn't necessarily a location or geography in this song, but a person. Sometimes someone can make you feel comfortable, and being around them is like you're home, because they are familiar. She's tired of emotionless, meaningless hook ups with strangers ("meet somebody, take 'em home). That line is sarcastic, to me. Notice how the next line she calls this act "graceless". Because it is. We fuck people we don't even know, out of some sick pleasure or kink. But she's sick of random casual sex. She wants someone she can count on, something meaningful. She wants to give love to one person. So there's a monogamous theme to the song, which is so rare in contemporary pop music. It's interesting she disguises it in a song about seeking casual sex, when it's really an indictment or criticism of that and the emptiness it creates. She's used alcohol to self-medicate ("all these nights spent off our faces"). She uses alcohol us liquid confidence, or a tool for seduction. She goes out, she drinks, she scopes out the guys she's around, which one is for me? "Trying to find these perfect places". Remember, the "place" represents a person here. In the end, a perfect person doesn't exist ("what the fuck are perfect places?") What is a perfect person, anyway? People will always let you down ("All of our heroes fading"). You just have to find someone who's problems are worth working through.
You should listen to the whole album. Melodrama is truly a masterpiece. Absolutely brilliant. The beats, the lyrics, Jack and her did an amazing job. The whole album is like a party on a mansion with different rooms. Amazing.
Are you aware at all about the visual things she experiences when she hears music? Idk what it' s called but Lorde sees music. I feel like that's where her moving within the music comes from. I think I remember her talking about the visual thing on a seth myers interview? Also do you read the last chapter of a book that's pulling you in at the beginning or the end of said book?
