    Building a honey house from a shipping container. This will be a long term project, and I’m sure it’ll be full of mistakes and frustrations. I hope you can learn something from my experience.

    The shipping containers are a great idea for all kinds of things. Storage especially, but interesting you converting to a honey house. A house down the road is built into and onto two containers like yours and is a private residence, so anything is possible with them. Glad we go by income over gallons here in LA or I'd a been outside the law for a few years. We're bound by 20K in bucks. I wonder why they require the one particular drain that will have honey going to the septic based on what we all learned from Bob on honey going into a septic. hmmm, figure they would've thought about that when writing toe code. You are a very ambitious man, but I know it'll be a top notch setup when you're done based on how you do everything we've gotten to see on your channel. Thanks for sharing Nathan.

      Thanks Mike! Lots of work. Got water a few days ago, electric to the building today, AC installed, a little framing done. Need some wiring to hook up the AC and we’re in business. Really hoping I can do a honey pull soon, timing is getting very very tight.

    I watched the Bush Bee Man on his channel and he has two shipping containers for a honey house. I have a twenty foot shipping container and you are correct it is not enough space. I built a wall over my double doors to run electrical and for a window air/heat. It take about 2 feet from inside but you can still store stuff there. I have a single door at the other end. Sounds like you have a good plan. Thanks for sharing. Good luck.

      Thanks, I plan to keep my double doors usable. It’ll flow well if full supers go in the end doors, then extract, and empty supers go out the man door in the middle. It works in my head anyway.

    I appreciate the verse reference 😊 as for building with those containers..... You can really go off the deep end, but picking those up off the ground would increase the life of the floors and decrease bug activity and allow access to anything that you might want to run from below, ie wires and plumbing.... Just one opinion

    A bit late now but for others. I would recommend a concrete floor. It would easily incorporate the floor drain,it’s durable, water proof,and ants can’t tear it up. If reinforced correctly the wood could rot completely away and you might never know.
    I think also a simple shed roof on the sunny side would reduce solar heat gain, and I’m fairly certain most folks can find something to store under the cover.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  2 роки тому

      Only issue with a concrete floor is I don’t want anything permanent at the moment. I may put a carport in eventually which would give shade.

    Howdy Nathan!
    This is an excellent idea of using a shipping container as a honey house. It is so portable, that You can call it a "pick & place" system ;)
    As You're looking for input on Your build, here are my 3 cents.
    Once I had a talk with my wife (she's a construction engineer) about insulating the roof truss with the polyurethane foam (I guess this is the stuff sprayed over the walls). I thought of it as an excellent idea, as the truss become more solid, harder for varmints to penetrate, I could name so many pros that came on my mind, I could hardly see any cons. She told me just one thing: despite some people isulate their roofs with the foam, it is against the law to do so with the public buildings (at least here, in Poland). This material is flammable (unlike the mineral wool or styrofoam), and when it is set on fire, it produces a lot of lethal substances, which instantly trip off the humans prior they realise the danger.
    Take care for the right fire protection measures.
    Wish You a nice flow, sunny weather, looking forward new videos!
    Cheers, Mike

    Harbor freight sells a shade cloth/tarp.
    Put it on the outside of the container when you are working in middle of summer. Pull it off the rest of the time. It makes a huge difference. Keeps the suns UV from heating up the metal. If you want to go to next level spray foam the outside of the building and then paint it.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  2 роки тому +1

      I thought about insulating the outside, but if I did that I’d probably put a metal roof over it and close it in. That’d be on down the road…I don’t want to turn it into a more permanent building yet.

    • @byrek

      Once I've tried to paint my polyurethane hive box, I've learned they cannot be painted until the outer surface oxidizes for a year or so.
      I'd rather try to utilize the sun by setting up sort of DIY solar collector or solar panels. Or even both. It could be mounted on the twist locks.

    Hey Nath,
    Kids and boxes hey…..buy a $10000 honey house and they just want to play with the box☺️.
    Excited to see where you go and blessed to be part of this journey. I agree with the comments below raising it off the ground to then allow 6-8 points of contact only (6-8ft of contact) as opposed to having the whole bottom which is about 320 or so feet of contact with the ground. These would make excellent quick inspection points for ants and vermin like we do here for termites.
    I know you moved that other container over already but how about separating the two and joining the two with a roof. Nothing flash. This would provide a breezeway and storage area between the two with room to add gates later for storage of a truck.
    Or perhaps then add a floor between both and enclose the space between the containers to add a whole new space/office/packing shed area. Cut access doors into both containers. Limited only by money and imagination.
    Thanks again for all the time you put in as a beekeeper and UA-camr. You content is always a pleasure to watch.

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Wayne, I left enough room between the two to get the excavator through to dig the septic line. Don’t know yet if I’ll scoot the small one over next to the big one or not. I thought about putting a carport between the two because the two containers would act as walls to block wind and rain, would be a decent place to store woodenware. IF this grows enough to justify a real building I’d prefer to sink money into that and just repurpose the containers, so I don’t want to over modify them or make them too permanent. The kids are making bring them out to the honey house daily because my son has built his “headquarters” in there out of a table laid on its side and some leftover foam sheets.

      Wayne, I’m a slow thinker…I roll things around in my mind a long time before I act on them, and I try to leave a lot of room for coming up with a better idea later. Current thoughts are that this will work for a while to get me going, but to scale from here I’d need a dock to offload trucks, and a forklift. Then a building that hopefully could use the same dock. It’s fun to have plans, even if you change them later. 😉

    The regulation in our state says raw agricultural commodity”, honey that is in the comb or that is removed from the comb and in an unadulterated condition. This allows unadulterated honey to be extracted in a “honey house” of the beekeepers choosing so long as standard practices of cleanliness are followed. These rules apply to beekeepers harvesting less than 500 gallons of honey. I guess they are saying around 6000 lbs?? I'm not sure about what the unadulterated part means either.
