  • This video is about the incredible Uni-T UTG962E function generator and arbitrary waveform generator. This thing is incredibly powerful and feature-rich as well as being pretty much as small as my hand. Take a look to see if it's the right device for you:

    For megahertz measurements
    Use a T connector on the oscilloscope side and a 50 ohm terminator.
    On the generator side, set the output impedance to 50 ohms.
    Utility - (CH1 Setting or CH2 Setting) - Load - 50 Om
    Sorry for the bad english.

    16:29 its not a Rigol problem. Generator have 200MSa/sec so at 10MHz it can do only 200/10=20 signal level changes per one period and its not enough for that complicated form. Only a sinusoidal signal is quite unpretentious and can be well created at the stated sampling rate. So the claimed 60MHz is only for a sinusoidal signal, everything else will work fine at a MUCH lower frequency. But for marketing and sales purposes, of course, they will write 60 MHz.

    Nice review, thanks. You know you can turn the Rigol into a 100MHz scope by a simple software edit, it has all the inbuilt circuitry but is just locked, easy to unlock, i did it with mine as have many others.

    If I might make a suggestion... put the equipment name/model in the video title -- so anyone looking for videos about it will find yours. I always look for videos on new equipment I'm considering (or trying to learn how to use).

    60 mhz will be plenty for testing cheap scopes. I have found a lot of scopes say 100 mhz and really do about 30. Looks really nice. I have used mine for audio repairs and to generate missing clock signals.

    How high is the UTG962 in centimetres? I have a feeltech FY6800 and it fits under the shelf but its screen is tiny. The UTG962 has a better UI and number buttons, which the FY6800 doesn't have.. Since watching this video, i might sell the FY6800 and buy a UTG962 but only if it will fit.

      Something worth noting (If you're coming from the FY6800), the UTG962 does not have a burst function. I found that out the hard way. If you need burst, you'll have to look at the UTG2000A, UTG2000B, UTG4000A from UNI-T.

    I have the slightly cheaper version of this, it is pretty great for the money. One thing I wish they would fix in the UI - it's hard to see the difference between decimal points and commas. For example 100.000,000 vs 100,000,000. I wish they would display the decimal part in a different color, that would be much clearer.

    Pardon my question, but did you unlock the 100 MHz bandwidth on your Rigol?
    Rigol intentionally "dumbs down" the frontend of the 50 MHz version of the series (1054z) by enabling a filter in the signal path (see the reverse engineering video on this model from Dave Jones / EEVBlog).
    However, when you unlock it to 100 MHz (with a code, no hardware modification needed) the filter in the frontend is disabled which increases the bandwidth. It should show a 60 MHz signal decently.
    If you have already unlocked your scope then forget everything I just wrote. ;-)

    • @SimpleElectronics
      @SimpleElectronics  3 роки тому

      I actually have not - this scope was around 600$ Canadian and I was afraid of voiding the warranty (the store actually warns against software hacking and voiding warranty) and I couldn't (still can't) afford to replace it if it were to go wrong!

    • @oldguy9051
      @oldguy9051 3 роки тому +3

      @@SimpleElectronics *If* you are out of warranty you can upgrade the scope w/o any problem. There is no disadvantage and no risk involved. Let me explain:
      Rigol sells software keys to "upgrade" the scope. Here are some of the available options:
      - With this they disable the intentional filter in the frontend to get the full 100 MHz bandwidth the frontend is capable of (and the scope already comes with 100 or 150 MHz probes...).
      - Another example is the memory upgrade - the chip is already soldered onto the board and now gets fully used.
      - The software decoders already present in the firmware become accessible and so on.
      The scope has a key-in functionality so you can enter the software keys with the knobs. The keys aren't universal (identical) as they depend on the serial no. of the scope. If you buy a key from Rigol you have to provide your serial no. and they then generate the key for you which you then enter.
      If you enter a wrong key nothing will happen except for an error message (very similar to entering licence keys in PC programs).
      The "hack" therefore isn't really a hack as you won't modify your hardware or firmware, send signals into the device via some ports etc.
      You simply generate a key on a certain website and enter it via the regular key-in method. In other words: These keys are identical to the keys that are being sold by Rigol. If you for example activate the 100 MHz option the scope will even identify itself as a "1104z" model on screen.
      Of course you can make an ethics case about this but the fact remains that the scope is artificially "dumbed down" and already soldered-on components not activated (to their full potential). In my eyes this isn't very ethical either. I also hate that early users always get the short straw: The newer 1054z are cheaper and come with many options already enabled. It's as if Rigol either doesn't care or expects them to hack the scope. The fact remains that this upgrade method is still available after all these years, Rigol hasn't sued anybody and not locked people out with a firmware update etc.
      Whatever the case, it's entirely up to you how to decide - I merely point this out as my way to give sth. back to your nice channel!
      Here are some links if you want to inform yourself by reading different opinions or how difficult this upgrade really is. Hope this helps!

      @@SimpleElectronics Rigol saying entering "unauthorized" keys will void warranty is like Dell saying that they void their desktop computer warranty because you installing a pirated version or windows. That does not hold water in Canada.. they are just trying to scare you, besides you can always "delete" the licenses before sending the scope for repair under warranty. Or just wait for the warranty to expire...

    Holy crap is right. UniT is crap, can't even find a manual for this thing on their website. Can't even find anything on UniT 962E on their website. It's like the device doesn't even exist.
