  • This video is about Low Cost Uni-T ARB 60 MHz Generator vs Siglent vs Koolertron. I'll show waveforms and various testing to show how well the Uni-T 962E arbitrary generator performs compared to the Siglent and Koolertron generators.
    The Uni-Trend 962E generator is a very nice low cost Arbitrary generator.

    I am happy that I found your channel! Great job with the intro, and the following demos. My electronics class was back in 70-72, but I've always kept a minor interest in the subject. I am now waiting for my Uni-T UT962 to arrive. It's Super Bowel Sunday, BUT I'll be playing with the UT and my 4ch. Pico automotive scope. As to your fondness for the EKG waveform, the Uni-T has the best depiction; I speak from >30yrs of experience in emergency services as a Lt. FF/PM, and ED-RN (I know how to read them, and also taught for aprox. 20yrs) trust me, I'm from the Gov. : -) Seriously, 20min into your video I'd subscribed, and I think that you did a great job on a subject of broad SCOPE. Thank you, as I sit here waiting for my Uni-T AWG.

The Tek was the one I liked least and the Keysight was the best. The Keysight just seemed like a normal scope with cool features - like the Micsig, but the others were loaded with menus that took several touches to get to where you wanted to go - that other scopes had handy right on the screen.

    I would have liked to have seen the software for each of them, or know if they even offer a package with each unit. One of the main reasons I use an arb it because I have some nonstandard waveform I need to create. Sometime I will use other equipment to capture a waveform and will need to play it back with the arb. If the companies offer some sort if library were you can write custom software to control them, even better. I see a part 2 in your future!

    I use a single channel Arb on my scope, but the main problem with it is (unlike the scope channel settings) it resets to default values when the scope is powered off and on. So this could be an affordable alternative if your answer is YES :-)

    20vPP is in HiZ. They are all probably limited to 10VPP in 50 ohm termination mode. The Siglents typically limit their PP output to 10VPP (50 ohms) to 20MHz and then (5vPP after 20MHz). That is a very important consideration.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  3 роки тому +1

      Very good point! I think the main difference is the source impedance is 50 ohms, so if the output is also 50 ohms then the voltage is divided in half. If the output impedance is Hi-Z then the output sees the full voltage and it is not divided in half. Thanks for this!

    • @Daveyk021
      @Daveyk021 3 роки тому +1

      @@KissAnalog I think the Siglent you have cuts its output in half after 10MHz or 15MHz? I use the SDG2xxxx Series and the SDG5162 (after software upgrade). The SDG200x Series is rock solid with VisaCom control (GPIB commands but through the USB Port), but the SDG5162 is older and somewhat flaky under software control. I would never recommend the the Siglent SDG5000 series, but the other ones are fantastic. Look at an SDG2000XE. It runs circles around a $5000 Agilent 33250A. It is two channel and you can easily combine (short) both channels together to create unique signals needed in my industry. You can also use a BNC-TEE to short the two channels of the SDG5162 together to create those same signals. It is solid except under software control.

I'm looking for a decent combination generator/oscilloscope that will also power tweeters to keep the neighbors dogs quiet. . What would you recommend? Also, beyond that use, can you site a few real world examples of how this will help me "fix stuff" around the house and garage? Oh, I'll suggest the possibility that all three of your channels on your scope might not be equal and changing your inputs with sine and square would have been a good validation of this. Merry Chritmas! I have a question: how pure is the sine out of that Uni-T generator, in audio band? I ask you because I was trying to measure the THD of an amplifier using my Siglent DSO 1204 X-E in FFT mode, and my cheap "Feeltech" arb waveform generator, and I also made some measurements with a PC soundcard using SpectraLAB software, but it looks to me that the output of the signal generator is already affected by some -50 or -60 dB 2nd harmonic, as well as some similar amplitude of 3rd harmonic, making really hard to measure the THD of the amp alone. How well does the UniT behaves in this respect?

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks - and great question! I found similar results using the Siglent and Uni-T. I suppose one thing you can do is use the input spectrum to compare the output spectrum. If you have a harmonic on the input (or set of harmonics), then you can see what their amplitude and freq is on the output to see if they are at the same freq and same gain between peaks. Is the noise floor at the same level or is it amplified also? I think to get a clean input you almost need a sinewave generator. But, I do think my bluetooth boards gave a cleaner signal. I should do that video comparing a cheep bluetooth preamp vs the ARB generators;)

      @@KissAnalog Thanks for your reply, I'm a novice so not really sure about advanced electronics. I have read elsewhere that when aligning CB radios on low frequencies (or it might be high it makes no difference in this instance), that the max dB needs to be quite low, low as in 0.5 mV or something. I've read that the newer inexpensive digital type sig gens (like this one) do not provide sufficient attenuation at these low (or is it high) frequencies, and so people who don't have much money to spend opt for the older dedicated RF generators due to the cost. Is that right ? I was thinking a way round this would be to buy a cheap waveform generator like the one in the video and use separate attenuators to get the signal down !

I would have saved hundred of dollars. 10 MHz must be Siglent's 6 dB down frequency:) I noticed the same problem on my Rigol 4162; at 160MHz it does not output the same set ampl level as at 50 MHz (if I remember well...).

      I know what you mean... It is too bad that they don't tell you the details about signal dropping after such and such freq. It should have a large asterisk next to the bandwidth. You have to dive into the manual before buying - and that's only after you've been bitten and know what to look for. Thanks for the feedback!!

    Hi Eddy, I enjoy your channel. I have the UTG962 as well and I believe I have found a problem with it's firmware. Wonder if you can confirm. When generating a signal of 14 MHz sinewave, when I turn on AM modulation with 1 KHz sinewave the output drops by 6 dB. It does NOT seem to drop if I use other modulation like FM, etc. This 6 dB drop is observed even if the AM depth of modulation is set to 0%. Can you confirm?? do you believe this is a firmware issue?? Thanks!

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for pointing this out. I haven't noticed that but I'll check it out. It could be that with Amplitude Modulation that it needs some amplitude to work with so it drops the signal. What signal level did you have on it when it did this? If you drop your signal down - does it still do it?

    • @DM-fz3ly
      @DM-fz3ly 5 місяців тому

      @@KissAnalog I was generating -33 dBm and then into a 40 dB attenuator to simulate -73 dBm which is S9 on a ham radio RX. It does it no matter what % modulation (0-100) on AM but not on FM, PM, etc. I was using 1 KHz AM modulating tone. I had the ouput Z set for 50 ohm but I also tried 75 ohm and HiZ. I really think it is a firmware issue. Just turning Mod on/off makes the signal drop 6 dB no matter what modulation %. NOTE you only see the dB AMPlitude output option when you are NOT on HiZ impedance which you can change under the "utility" button.

    Comparing sampling (oscilloscopes) with signal generation at high frequency is flawed. If the sampling frequency is fixed e.g. 200 MHz, then a scope can only resolve 100MHz and anything too high is hit and miss. 2.5x rule is a good idea but 10x is better. With signal generation, then you only need to generate at 200MHz rate to reproduce exactly a sine wave at 100MHz. Lower the frequency e.g. 190MHz and you can also reproduce a perfect sine wave at 95MHz. The specs may only tell half the story as how the devices go about their magic may be different, also how they deliver reliably into a load matters greatly. Siglent don't seem to have trouble selling their expensive products and they are available through distributors and not affiliate links.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  3 роки тому

      Thanks Simon for this feedback. You are right about the 2.5x rule, and that it should actually be higher. I think 10x is great, but from what I see from other 'big' name scope companies is that 5x is probably the right number. Also, I think we are talking about the sampling rate Sa/s not the analog bandwidth (MHz). Although, the analog bandwidth is or can be part of the problem, so to keep tolerance to +/-3% I think 3x is used, or 5x for closer to 2%. Depends on the type of filtering for the BW I think. Great point, I'll have to do a video on this and see if we can explore this concept...
