  • Knee hyperextension can make walking extremely difficult. It might make you feel like you are falling backward or just unsteady. It sometimes can also cause pain behind the knee. All that being said, that is a way to STOP the knee recurvatum (hyperextension). In this video I will show you how to stand and relearn how to gait knee control after a stroke or a brain injury. Those with multiple sclerosis may also find this tutorial extremely helpful to improve walking

    hello,can u please tell me what is the progression from crouch walking ? i had my stroke in 2017 , and have got used to walking in bent position of knee that makes me look short in height and i cant walk fast or long distance. if i straighten my knee, it still goes into hyperextension;how can i resolve the issue and walk in neutral postion without using any knee cage ? kindly clear my very old doubt, i always keep asking you, . your answer can change my life. thanking you in advance.

I'm starting to do crouch walking or more of a lunge walk which keeps the ankle very stable. There's no inversion or eversion. but I foresee the same thing. There has to be a balance. Could you tell us what the next exercise is or how do you balance yourself out. There's gotta be a way..

    i had a stroke two years ago. my left hand had been completley un responsive to anything. and just Today!!!!! its like my brain found and old Nintendo and said "i rember this game! I have full control Now i am only limited by the Spacticity you spoke of in another video. it will move on command but it bitches and groans because the muscles havent been used for 2 years 2 years of absolutley nothing and its back out of the blue. im legit high from the endorphins im am so happy right now!!!

    Hi Dr Tara, I have ms and caught Covid in Christmas 2022. I have not got back to what I was before and have been struggling with knee hypertension but I wanted to let you know that I watched part one of this topic and you suggested trying a heel lift insert into my shoe so I thought I would give it ago and it is really helping! It even helped while driving as not as extreme as an AFO which I do have but find unbalancing and tiring and also can not drive with. Amazing how such a simple solution helps. A bit of plastic under my heel to lift and promotes the knee to bend. Thank you 🙏

    I came across your videos like everything else...by accident. I’ve been locked into them for 3 days straight. I have not had a stroke, no ms, no Parkinson’s or anything else you’ve referred to. I have spinocerebellar ataxia origin unknown. I’ve been doing your exercises for only about a day but your little cues on the neuromuscular side of things are a great help. I wish I could go to you for therapy as the place I’ve been going only looks at the physical injury and not the coordination of all the parts. I’m only two hours up the road so I may take a drive once all this mass hysteria settles.

      thank you for watching! Cerebellar ataxia is a tough diagnosis. I do not have any videos (yet) that address issues associated with ataxia. I will keep this in mind for future videos!

    Thankyou for this video about locking knee. But I also have my right eye seems to be blurry, out of tune with the right, going up and down especially when I look on the right. My tablet screen seems to wobble, sometimes. Doctor said my eye is good but problem is behind the eye. I got tinnitus as well in left ear more. Cannot listen to radio, tinnitus comes louder as high pitch. I am always dizzy. Had a stroke in year 2020. Praise God I can still walk. I posted this comment on 15th May 2023. Anything that can help? Doctor said I have brainstem damage. Thanks Jimmy

    Dr. Tara, I was infected by West Nile virus in September of 2021, since then I have been doing many hours of therapy to return to walking. My right knee bends back and these Exercises look to be helpful I will keep you posted

      Hey I have MS to. I just had relapse and turns out my knee goes into "hyper flex" as well. Glad you know it actually helped you! I get it once I have walked for 15 to 20 odd mins

    Do you have a recommendation for how to add a lateral flare to the shoe for the affected leg with a supinated foot?     This is really amazing to me I just found your video my doctor put me in really heavy knee braces to prevent my knees from going back but noone ever said I could do exercise to get them to not extend back is this true that by doing these exercises my knees will stop going back and I could walk normal again

    Yes, i also have lots of troubles with knee hypertension. It is painful and wants to lock when you are somewhere standing for a longer length of time. Then i would hff ave to hold on to something to get mt knee to unlock so as to start walking again. I have been doi g the new deal of standing up with most of my weight on my problem leg. It is helping. Slow, but sure. 🤨

    Dr you are a God sent for me. After my stroke I had a very serious knee buckling problem and I couldn’t walk at all. After the rehabilitation I started walking but my right knee hyper extends. When I am standing straight with my knees locked( both feet together toes in a straight line) my right knee is two inches back than the left knee. As a result I walk with a limp because my right hip becomes higher than the left. I am not stable on my feet. If I don’t hyperextend my right knee it buckles for 10-15 degrees.
    Doctor I am a very healthy male apart from this issue an I love/enjoy a active life. Is there any hope/chance of my being able to walk normal again.

    I do a lot of the activities in the video but patients knee continues to hyperextend weeks and weeks of therapy. How long does it usually take to see a difference ?

    And before I forget, thank you guys for listening to me. I just wanted to know how to regain strains I can boom my leg back barely but I want to get it to where I can have no strength to stand up and maneuver and not be so shaky I did my feet every day but like I said it feels like everything is getting weaker and harder to do and I know part of it is VA Tia, tap my foot every day and they do it with 10 pound weight but it seems like that’s not even helping me achieve. The reflection is to get AFL that hold the foot up.

    This has been a big problem for me. I'm telling myself to walk on a slightly bent knee to avoid snap back. Doing this also makes my gait look more normal.

    I wonder if it can be adjusted from excessive forward slope of the pelvis to excessive foreclimbing of the lumbar spine, knee joint and nerve during the transition from knee joint strengthening to standing position to walking.

    I think I may have had a mini stroke from a severe reaction to medication (ibuprofen) 2 years ago which was for a hand injury.
    Ever since I took thr medicine I have involuntary twitches, trouble walking ( knees feel weak and I am always off balance and always nearly fall) problems picking things up, almost robotic and not a smooth motion and my eyes are pretty skittish. Its the most debilitating feeling and it has given me severe anxiety. I had a suspicion I love had a mini stroke and now seeing a stroke can affect walking and weak knees I think I need to pay to see a neurologist to find out ..

    Thanks for the new ideas! My question is,if a healthy leg stands on a suppot, and paralyzed leg on the floor,can I fully straighten?and rather than staying in a position to bend over.

      Great Question! If you go into hyperextension you do not want to straighten in out all the way. In my experience, the only way to make sure it does not lock out is to bend it more than feels natural.

    One of my patients, have a spastic gait. What I mean by that in specific is, the patient is able to do hip and knee flexion in supine position, but when he bears weight on that limb while standing or walking, he is not able to do the hip knee flexion dissociation. I've been giving closed kinematic activities, but I'm not sure I'm going in the right direction. Been few days but no change. Could you guide me as to what in particular can be done for a stroke patient with poor to moderate dynamic balance?

    I can do the last activity without holding on a stool...just a bit tiresome on my affected left foot but I can feel the strength it develops on that part...my knee still hyperextends sometimes...just a bit more exercise!

    hi,, can u advice me as i had road accident n gor neck fussion n got surgery for neck c4 c5 c6, plus had stroke n frozen shoulder same timec. it was july 2020, but i cannot standup by nyself n both hands r stiff.i doing physiotherapy bit hand n standup is not improving plz advice

    My problem is that my left knee will fold from under me. I don't know if this is called "trick knee".
    I also lack a knee jerk reflex. When seated I can lift my right leg (foot) off the floor and slowly raise it and move it forward while being able to hold it steady in any position. No such luck with my left leg. I can not lift it. If I lift it with my hands and let go it will plop right back. None of many doctors and specialist I saw knows what is going on. X-rays, MRIs, and nerve conductivity study show nothing wrong.

    I’m not able to slide the foot down the incline.
    Or when I’m lying on my stomach I can’t bend the knee and bring foot up.
    I can raise the whole leg.

    And when i sit down am afraid to put pressure an my knee because am afraid it might give out.... An nw my other knee is arching me because of two much pressure.

    I'm dealing with this and I'm not sure how to work the knee by myself safely. Walking is a problem, and the knee is getting better, but snail pace is fitting for how it's going.. how do i speed it up?
