Haha, I'm the exact opposite in terms of backpack pockets. I cannot STAND more than like 3, lmao. However, a water bottle holder on each side is a must 😛
I have a Jansport Right Pack. I love the minimal pockets (keeps it light and comfortable) and I personally hate water bottle pockets - I either carry my water bottle or keep it inside the bag.
Great video! This past year I have become a lot more environmentally-conscious and have already been taking steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Your videos help me improve my knowledge on the topic and give me many more ideas to integrate into my life! So thank you for that 😊
When your bag wears out and needs to be replaced, check out Tom Bihn bags. Made in Seattle. I love them because they're designed around the principles of space economy and usability. The bags have great built-in pockets, along with O-rings positioned strategically throughout that you can use to clip on pouches, pockets, and other accessories to suit your needs. I've had my Synapse 19 for about 7 years of hard use, and it's still going strong! I've had a couple of repairs done over the years, but the lifetime warranty means they did the repairs at no cost to me. (I also have one of their now-retired Smart Alec bags, which I use for hiking and traveling light.)
Awesome video! My problem right now is I want to have products from better companies that are B certified or just reflect my beliefs better... But I only recently got into purchasing this way. My 5 year old backpack still works great so I can't justify getting a new one, even if I donated it I'm not positive it would find a new home! Same thing with clothes... Nike is a pretty terrible company all around but the running gear I have by them will at least last a while. Reusing what I have is better for the earth... But it doesn't advertise more eco friendly products to others. It's a tough choice.
Hey you're just making your way into it! My old toothbrush is plastic but it's still good! Just gradually make that transition because like you said, you've got stuff already that works in the meantime. Thanks for the comment!
For the Nike gear you could always when possible try to remove the logo. If it’s old then it may already be peeling off. I’m 22 and I still have leggings from Nike that I bought when I was 14 and they’re nowhere near in need of replacement BUT the small logo on the side finally rubbed off entirely so if you’re lucky and with a little help from some strong fingernails yours may come off as well and voila, you’re not advertising for Nike anymore.
Don't forget that when those Nikes fall apart, Nike will take them back to turn into recycled athletic and playground surfaces (and they'll take other brand sneakers, too). So it's not a total waste. Next time you can buy more sustainable sneakers...and then recycle those via Nike or other such programs when they're dead as well. recyclenation.com/2012/08/nike-reuse-shoe-program/
@@sonipitts thanks for this. I've heard of it but I usually donate my shoes to a second hand store or homeless program or something. Thats having grown out of them or whatever though, if my shoes fall apart or are unusable I'll look into this.
Great video, but I’m disappointed you didn’t give a shoutout to the company who made your little snack bags. Colibri is a Canadian company creating reusable snack bags that are fully washable so you can eliminate ziplock bags. Please check out the great work that they are doing.
I have the same Sea to Summit set! I originally got it for backpacking/camping, but when I saw how convenient it was for everyday use (and that it takes up less space than my glass and tupperware containers) it became an item that stays in my bag 24/7. Glad other people know about them.
I recommend using a vacuum-filled or a piston-filled fountain pen instead of using disposable gel pens. Also, fountain pens have a smoother writing experience.
If your bag ever bites the dust, I'd recommend the Tom Bihn Synapse. BIFL for sure, tough as nails and TB stands behind their products, and if you like organization and customization there's not many that do it better.
I've been using a waterproof Ortlieb bike bag everyday for 3 years for commuting, grocery shopping / other errands, pretty much everything. It's been remarkably durable considering what I put it through. I personally like the "big dry bag to throw stuff in" type of backpack, but it also has a laptop sleeve and a small zip pouch on the outside. Could sure use more little pockets though.
You could sew/have someone sew an additional mesh pocket on the other side of your bag, as well as add some extra pockets on the inside. You'd end up with a unique bag tailored to you, with little to no additional waste! I'm about to take my favourite bag to a tailor this weekend to see if they can add some side pockets! :)
I've been a "one-bagger" and also a big EDC bag person for a long time. However you've convinced me to add a spork and chopsticks (I do live in Asia, so that makes sense) to my EDC bag to help save from plastic utensils! Thanks!
Levi Hildebrand I don’t know. Can you tell me some more details? How many years in the logging industry does he have? How long is he logging for? Is he above or below average fitness? I will do my best to answer but I need more.
My friend has a backpack that originally didn’t have a water bottle pocket, so she sewed some mesh on there and made one herself. Something to think about if you really want one or some more little pockets!
Just found a stainless steel airtight reusable container at my local thrift store 🤙 trying to reduce the waste I create a little at a time. Thanks for inspiring me!
Last year I invested in a Timbuk2 Tuck Pack (its one of the roll top ones) and I don't think I've ever loved a back this much, I'm also based out of Vancouver and so the weatherproofing is an absolute must!
You could probably add more pockets and another bottle holder by getting some fabric and hand sewing it on. It's actually not that difficult for pockets, just a square piece of fabric sewn on 3 sides.
@@LeahandLevi funny that we are talking about it I literally just bought another bag for a heck of a price ! I actually went to San Francisco to buy it though
There’s so much product placement in the videos on this channel that I think it’s worth constantly reiterating that people should buy used or not buy new things unless they really need the thing BEFORE choosing a good company to buy new things from. I know you say those things, but I’d be saying them more. These vids definitely make people want to buy stuff.
If you want more organization in that main compartment but don’t want to get a new bag, consider getting a Tom BIHN Freudian slip. The s25 or s19 one will probably fit in the main compartment and add a ton of organization. To get stuff you need, just lift the slip out - it beats digging stuff up from the bottom of your bag. I use one and it works great.

So solve your pocket problem you should have some daisy chains sewn to the inside of your bag and then you can use different daisy chain pocket accessories to meet your pocket loving needs.
I had 2 timbuk2 bags and they are not durable as I would expect to their price tag. Both bags were ruin after 1 year of normal home-work-gym use (+ additional small fixes to the bags during the year). I would recommend you to try STM backpacks. I have one for 2 years now, and it is still looks and function great.
How old is Nada, the store? Because we’ve had a store like that in my hometown in Australia for up of 20 years now. It’s incredibly successful and the town is so into zero waste that there’s now a second bulk store in a town that’s not massive. I have a bag clipped to every handbag I own. Best idea I ever had. BTW you can get collapsible straws on eBay...but sadly it came in a plastic sleeve, I was not impressed. I figure it’s still less though because it’s so small I carry it everywhere and I never use disposable straws now.
Have you ever checked out Tom Bihn bags? They're amazing, handmade, lifetime warranty, and tons of pockets and O rings to clip things too, they also last forever. I absolutely love them.

do the toothy tabs actually save waste? you only get so many tabs compared to a large tube of toothpaste. Is the bottle easier to recycle than the tube?

Levi you could see if you can DIY those things you don’t like about your bag. You can find a zipper at a thrift store and sew a zipper on your wallet pocket (zippers are very easy to hand-sew) and sew a pouch on the side of your bag. I know DIYs are time-consuming but it could get more mileage and enjoyment out of your bag.
You know you could sew in some extra pockets yourself. I'm pretty sure there are some videos somewhere that would show you how to do it. Heck...just stick and sew a few patches of velcro and then attach different pouches &/or pockets as needed.
You may already know this, but there's another company, Bite, that sells toothpaste tablets in glass bottles which ship completely plastic free. They taste like those butter mint candy things; you might like them better. Awesome content as usual, great work.👍
I don’t think the perfect bag exists (unless perhaps you design it yourself). I’m still trying to “hack” my current backpack into being what I really want it to be. If you’re still finding that you want more pockets, you may want to look at the “Freudian Slip” from Tom Bihn. They have a variety of them that fit in different sized bags (they’re designed for Tom Bihn’s bags, but work great in other companies bags too). Basically it’s a bag shaped insert that has lots of pockets and pouches.
So I’m very much NOT a zero/low waste person, but I’m trying to better about the waste I do produce. I’m a nurse, and I work in a hospital where there is so much plastic you couldn’t believe, worse of my hospital doesn’t really recycle. My question is how can we cut down on hospital waste without compromising infection control? A lot of things need to be in sterile/ clean packaging which is a lot of plastic. I’m trying to do my part by only taking the supplies that I need into a room which helps, but I’m thinking of potentially bringing up to management for a project. Any help from pros in the community would be great! Thanks!!
This is a great question and quite honestly would be a wonderful business model to explore for any entrepreneurs out there. The challenge would be to find a supplier that has a less wasteful product for a similar price because within healthcare bottomline is everything. The other angle is trying to make recycling a priority within the staff. If you can get people on board to say that recycling should be mandatory then perhaps things can change. But beyond all else it starts with you doing something in your own life and it sounds like you’re on your way there already 👏🏼
5:50 That was cheeky and smart and I loved it. Had subscribed prior, but wanted to be in tune with the timing of things, so, I unsubscribed and then I subscribed again.
Very good and well thought out. I never thought of the lock, and have needed one, so thanks for that. Do you use a refillable fountain pen? I have saved a lot of waste with mine I think.
Great video! Try bamboo toothbrushes and Bite Toothpaste. I have a slight preference over Bite in comparison to the Lush one that you have in this video.
Enjoyed the video.... :) I have a bag full of produce bags and reusable shopping bags, plus my water bottle, a glass container and a wooden spoon.... that is about it.... :) Also me and my husband will try our best to have a nice as waste free celebration of our wedding as possible this September in Canada.... :)
Sidenote: video reminds me of when someone first ever pegged me for a Pacific Northwest accent because we tend to say something approximating "bayg" to various degrees. Blew my mind.
Yeah that’s a good one! It’s not that the bag you had before goes directly into the landfill or something, it’s that by buying a new bag you feed into the capitalist system that convinces people they need to buy more stuff. If people actually used their stuff for years and years companies wouldn’t make nearly as much money. So they convince us that every year we need a new bag or a new outfit etc. This inevitably leads to a bunch of unnecessary waste in the landfill. Hopefully this helps answer your question? 🤷🏻♂️

You may already know this, but there's another company, Bite, that sells toothpaste tablets in glass bottles which ship completely plastic free. They taste like those butter mint candy things; you might like them better. Awesome content as usual, great work.👍
Cool store!
you're very inspiring, thank you
I don’t think the perfect bag exists (unless perhaps you design it yourself).
Can you put the collapseable container in the microwave?
Yes it's microwave friendly but you have to loosen the lid first
Damn Dave Franco is on point with his travel advice
You should get the rocket book notebook so you can reuse the paper and stuff
that bottle opener on the bag 👀
lol yeah I've never actually used it.
I have some Chico bags that are almost 10 years old and they are still going strong!
Very good and well thought out. I never thought of the lock, and have needed one, so thanks for that. Do you use a refillable fountain pen? I have saved a lot of waste with mine I think.
No I never thought of that! Good idea though, might be a fun upgrade to reduce waste!
Great video! Try bamboo toothbrushes and Bite Toothpaste. I have a slight preference over Bite in comparison to the Lush one that you have in this video.
Thanks for the recommendation my friend! I’ll keep them in mind 👍🏼
Awe that’s awesome! So cool to hear you’ve got a little kit set up there! Congratulations on your wedding!
Levi Hildebrand Thank you very much! :)
Omg I love "what's in my bag videos"
Sidenote: video reminds me of when someone first ever pegged me for a Pacific Northwest accent because we tend to say something approximating "bayg" to various degrees. Blew my mind.
I got a question, if say I get a backpack why is it so bad to buy a new one like how does that cause waste
Levi Hildebrand I see, you know the Birkenstocks and how there repair able are there any really dope backpacks that can last for a long time and are repair able
Does anyone have fjallraven raven 20l and can recommend?
Definitely 🙌🏻☺️
K K thanks 🙂 I hesitate cause there’s lots of 28l reviews on YT but hardly anything about 20l. I like when backpack is more slim looking and 28l is not. How about 20l?
If you like a backpack with many pockets i would buy a pinqponq. Its a german company and they are fair trade certificated.
I found your channel recently and like what you're about! Whenever you mention Nada market I'm wondering if it's pronounced "nada" as in "nothing" in Spanish. It would make sense being there is no packaging.
Thanks for being a part of the team! You are correct! Nada as in nothing, I would be interested to know if that was the intention when you did it
I’ve never been so early!! And love the vid!! Can you do some vlogs as well?
Thanks for clicking that notification! I thought of vlogging but not for the near future!
I know that you swear by Klean Kanteen and probably don't need another water bottle. But the company Larq has a really unique and super amazing quality water bottle, you should check it out.
DIY the other water bottle holder
imagine being this put togetherrr
You should try the toothpaste tablets made by Change toothpaste from Edmonton :)
just ordered a pela case after seeing your video...they didn't have any of the cool animal covers for galaxy so that was their biggest con imo so apple centric
Lol, I hate backpacks with too few pockets too. I'm looking at you, Osprey... 😏
