What a brilliant dusting of snow...thank so much for thoroughly explaining your compositions...it really is just like magic sometimes...on many occasions I even surprise myself...such a spectacular location!
No worries, and thanks for watching. I might do a "deep dive" video into my thought process of how I compose my images...it's been something I've been thinking about doing for a while. 👍
Beautiful pictures! I am doing winter landscape photography for the first time, and also suffer from cold hands. I've found that the Vallerret Ipsoot gloves, with a single-use hand warmer in the little zippered pocket, does a very good job of keeping my hands warm. And, I do not have to constantly remove the gloves to use the camera. I'm glad you have found a solution, too.
Hi Julian: Great images and wonderful video. I used to be a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol and one tip for keeping hands warm is to place a copper penny in the palm of your hands or in your socks. You will be amazed how well this works for just pennies! L.O.L. Cheers, Keith
There are few things better than a sunrise on the Winter landscape - great capture. I'm a big fan of Vallerret gloves as well. I have two pairs. However, I opted for the Heat 3 Smart shell gloves for the Upstate New York winter weather. I actually mix/match the Vallerret and Heat 3 gloves depending on the conditions. You really can't go wrong with either!
Thanks Miguel. It's good to have options in the glove department! I still have my other pair of Vallerret gloves which I'll use when it's not as cold. :-)
Great locvation for a sunrise shoot and craxckingt conditions Julian. The big foreground image with those wonderful rocks had me in mind of a Greg Whitton style image, really liked it. As for the gloves I have found as I have got older the cold has really got into the old bones and a sunrise shoot on a cold winter's day does not appeal so much - although I love seeing the images from others, a bobble is my must take in cold weather. - keep it up ! atb Alan
Thanks Alan, much appreciated. Those bitterly cold mornings aren't for everyone are they. Great point about the hat....most your body heat escapes from your head apparently. :-)
Hello Julian. I was up on Dartmoor, Emsworthy Common, the other day and I have gloves that are warm (ish) but they are too chunky and they don't have a liner. I couldn't feel or do much with them on and so seeing yours I think they'd be a much better option. Thanks for another great set of pictures and I would've been on the Moors but, my wife wasn't happy with me driving there as it was 'too dicey' plus now, it seems, that it would've been too far from my home in any case, as 20 miles is not in my 'local area'!
Hey Andrew, great to see a comment from you. As I said in the video, gloves are always a bit of a comprimise...to thin, to thick....which is why I think the two glove approach seems to work. Dartmoor is no longer in my local area either now....I'll be taking pictures of my dog for a while! :-)
Lovely images Julian. I have a similar problem with cold and earache. I found the solution was a thermal buff over my head, though it did once lead to me being stopped by a farmer who thought I was a burglar; I was dressed in black from head to toe and looked like a masked robber 😂 The poor chap had recently been burgled so was being particularly alert.
Belstone tor is my stomping ground being 5 mins away from me, its a great place, Im lucky enough to have all this on my door step Julian, Even when i was a kid used to play round the rocks ! I have shot it a billion times but every day it can look different with the weather conditions we get. Taw marsh just below is another favourite ;) Great video
Thanks Andie! You're very lucky to live so near to such a lovely part of Dartmoor. Belstone is a favourite location of mine and I'm sure you can appreciate why. There is almost always a photograph worth capturing there. Will check out Taw Marsh. Thanks for watching. :-)
I love magic. And Nature does it best. Cold hands are definitely a great inhibitor, may not suffer as much as but do try to avoid that with gloves. Thanks for sharing
Hi Julian cracking image. As for the gloves I suffer the same feeling the cold on my hands. What I love to see added to the design of the gloves is you can expose your thumb and finger on the underlying layer. Have big fingers I can struggle when I can't feel the buttons. So to have the option to open the second layer would make the perfect glove for me. Just a thought to pass on to the company and see what they say. I'd be their first customer to purchase a pair.
Thanks Terry. Vallerret do a glove that you can expose your thumb and finger....I own a pair of these gloves....I might see if I can wear those as a inside glove to the mitt! 🤔 But I am also in contact with the company so I'll be sure to pass your suggestion on.
Beautiful light. That's the one thing I don't like about winter and it gets pretty darn cold here in Canada is I have a hard time keeping my hands warm. Even with my Vallerret gloves which are great but my fingers still get too cold. Having a mitt is better. Going to have to look into them.
Thanks Susan....I did think to myself as I was talking about the cold that it's probably way colder in places like Canada! It gets properly cold there! Hope you find something to keep your hands warm. :-)
As always, an excellent video Julian. I have used for sometime the Vallerret Markof Pro 2 which have the fingertips that fold back, the only problem is my finger tips freeze without protection. The Zipper Mitt seems an excellent alternative. Dartmoor can be bitter this time of year and cold fingers cramps your style, sometimes I can't even feel the shutter button.
Thanks Steve, always great to read a comment from yourself. I also own the Markof Pro 2 as well, but like you, my fingertips freeze when it gets a bit more chilly on Dartmoor. Hence why I was very happy to try these mitts. Nothing worse than cold hands as you can appreciate.
Cold hands are definitely an issue for me! Lovely conditions that morning Julian and you captured them really well. I really liked those compositions with the leading lines of the rocks in the foreground. Sam
Thanks Sam, appreciate that mate. This reminds me...I did watch your video yesterday....but I think I forgot to leave a comment.... I did....fixing that now! :-)
Great images I’d second the mittens they are great. I also use a brand called buffalo. Well known for buffalo shirts / jackets but the mittens are amazing.
So nice to see that your location planning and patience was rewarded. Some cracking images Julian, well done. I have looked at those gloves as a possible solution to cold hands and I’m glad that they are working well for you. As I’ve grown older I suffer from poor circulation in my hands--apparently it’s hereditary. I cannot keep my hands warm in cold weather-even with heavy gloves. Photography is next to impossible as my fingers go numb and I cannot even make simple camera adjustments. I tried all kinds of different gloves until I finally discovered a simple solution. I now use medium weight mittens each filled with one of those instant/single use hand warmers. I keep my hands heated until I need to use my fingers, then I slip off the mitt. A few minutes later, back in the heated mitt. It works a treat! Cheers, Jeff
Thanks Jeff! Great to see a comment from yourself as always. Ah yes, hand warmers. There will always be a place in my kit bag for those...your hands can never be too warm on a winters day on Dartmoor!
Great images Julian winter is the best looking season imo. The gloves sound fantastic only I wouldn't fancy magnets on them for me as could interfere with compass..
Cheers Glen....good shout on the magnet and a compass. I just went and checked and if you do hold the magnet within 6 cm of a compass it will interfere. Well called out. :-)
@@jbairdexp pity as I really like the Idea of mittens with zips like that I have some whooly fingerless things that have mittens pullover bits but not as good as a water resistant. So I am back with several layers of gloves on and off in the cold.

Great images Julian looks like a magical place to be when the conditions are good.. Thanks for the info on the gloves, I suffer dreadfully with cold hands at these temperatures so much that it often stops me venturing out ..... perhaps these are an answer for me too. Best wishes for a successful year ahead.
Thanks Ray. Nice to know I'm not the only one who suffers from cold hands! I do see some photographers out in the cold and wonder why their hands have fallen off! lol All the best for the new year as well. :-)
I know Belstone is one of your favourite Dartmoor locations and its easy to see why! its on my list for 2021! I must admit I was in envy of those conditions! great images, great job👍🏻
Thanks Tom, and yes it is. Hence why I keep going back....boring I know but I just love. Hope you get there in 2021 and that you are fortunate enough to get some great conditions. :-)

Great video Julian, definitely worth the wait for that light. Re the gloves, have you tried the Markof Pro 2 gloves, and if so how do they compare for warmth and dexterity? I'm planning on getting one or the other, but of course we can't go anywhere to try them on (had planned to at last years photography show!)
Thanks Nigel, and great question. I also have a pair of Markhof Pro gloves which were bought in 2017, so I don't think they are the 2.0 model, but hopefully my comparison is still relevant. I would say the mitten/liner combination of the Skadi mitt is definitely warmer, and when you are using the camera with the liner exposed (the mitt pinned back), you have more dexterity over the Markhof (with it's fingers closed). You do get more dexterity (better camera control) with the Markhof when the thumb and finger are exposed, but that obviously exposes your digits to the cold. For the much colder conditions I'll always take the mitt. The difference in the ability to control the camera with the liner compared to the Markof is small, which for me is a sacrifice well worth taking for warm hands. The convenience of being able to put the mitt on quickly also has benefits. For the those days where it's still cold (but maybe not bitterly cold), I'll take the Markhofs. They are great gloves. Like I said in the video....no such thing as a perfect pair of gloves, and you always compromise somewhere along the line. If it was me and I could only have one pair, I'd go the mittens. I hate having cold hands. Hope this helps! 👍 Shame about the Photography Show isn't it? Trying out stuff is one of the reasons I go as well.👍
@@jbairdexp Thanks Julian, really appreciate the reply and you sharing your experience. As you say, as is often the case with photography kit there's no perfect answer - and I'm terrible at deciding on the compromise! I do suffer with fingers early turning to blocks of ice, especially forefingers, so maybe mitts is the way to go. Think a bit more prevarication is in order 😀
Thanks Alex. I used the sizing guide on the Vallerret website for all the Vallerret gloves I have and found them to be a perfect fit when I get them. 👍

I was interested to see the gather of excess material when zipped open and wondered if you felt the glove may be sized wrong for you. My only issue with the gloves is that the merino liner doesn't last long with continuous use over a year
