This is just utterly incorrect. The center channel carries a huge load for effects in addition to dialog. It literally carries the bulk of the sound that ties to what you are seeing happen on screen. It is by far the most important channel in every form of a multi channel mix, and using your TV for a center with a decent system is a terrible idea. Talk about fact check.
@@bwiz6514 Wherever you got that information from. I am an audio engineer and work as a surround mixing engineer and I know no movie that uses the center channel for effects. Also in university we were specifically taught these facts. If you need me to, I will find sources for you :)
@@mltdnmatthe As an AV calibrator, I always listen to the content of the center channel in isolation to make sure there isn't significant comb filtering, resonance or back wall reflections, and to see if the bass management of the center benefits from LFE+main or if it's full sounding without it. There's dozens of movies with great full range content coming out of the center channel, including Life of Pi, MI Ghost Protocol, HERO, Green Lantern and so many more. An extreme example would be Gladiator, which has a significant amount of the weapon noises, horse hooves, chariot bass, and a variety of other full range effects mixed into the center. So I don't know what to tell you.
@@bwiz6514 I am ging to check on those title. Please do me a favor and check on the sources I sent you. This channel is by definition preserved for speech. If an audio engineer decides to ignore that, it is a niche case. Center speakers are often designed with speech in mind and thus emphasize the frequency spectrum of speech specifically. If there is any "full range" content for Center speakers, it is designed for speakers with speech emphasis, such as TV-speakers.
This TV is absolutely gorgeous. I saw HDTV test and its side by side comparison with Sony Gold Standard cinema grade TV shows how far ahead it is from its competition. I have the A80J and the 5000 series sound bar. It honestly works very well, the voices especially coming through the acoustic panel are very clear and have a reasonable amount of “height”
It entirely depends on the rest of your speakers. It's not going to be timbre matched, unless you're also using Sony tvs for all you're other channels, which would be stupid. And it's not going to keep up with anything of even decent sound quality. Say you've got an explosion on the screen, the processor will send the sound to probably all three front channels if it's centered. You would be able to make out all the tinny garbage coming from the TV vs the reasonable sound coming from the rest of the speakers. And if you've got a sound bar, you've already got a matching center channel. No point in probably making it worse. It's not a _"weird conclusion to come to"_ on a $3200 television where people will most likely have some sort of sound solution that is orders of magnitude better than what the center channel can keep up with. You can't just add a single shit-tastic speaker into a decent setup. It will call attention to itself all the time.
The processing is always on, you're just turning off interpolation, so the Sony image processing does matter. The image processors are not SOC's. different than the ARM SOC running the OS.
I remember having a Panasonic HD-Ready (so 1080i max) in 2007 (cost me a whopping 4500 euro's 😢), that was as flat as technology would allow, but I can promise you that that TV had bass. However, it used a certain amount of trickery to "simulate" lower frequencies. I remember having looked around for a few months for the, for me, right balance in screen and audio.
Having an old 2010 Bravia and now a x90H 55" I must say, apart from the really nice working dimming zones, I really like the way Sony TVs look like how the color and contrast is displayed. It's what's making me coming back to Sony TVs.
For me lack of oled is a plus. Yes the problem with burn-in is smaller on TV, but I do not want to take care of TV, remember to turn it off, be afraid to put something static like music player when friends are around, have higher chance of failure after 5+ years. OLEDs also have lower brightness, which is really big issue for me, as I am not always watching TV in dark cinema conditions. Slightly better image quality is not worth it. Last year I bought premium Sony TV, exactly because it looks good as is not an OLED.
You really don’t have to take care of it. I’ve had an lg cx since 2020 and have had no issues with it at all. I use it in a pretty well lit room and it’s still bright enough. I also have an Alienware 3423dw qd oled and zero issues with burn out or anything. These tvs and monitors take care of themselves pretty much. They will auto adjust brightness or if no activity is detected they will put on a screen saver. As far as brightness goes my qd oled goes to 1000nits and I have to squint even durning the day sometimes.
@@whocares3252 Two years, that's nothing. After I upgraded my displays, the old ones are still serving me after 10 years in other ways. 1080p is enough for additional screen. Same with TVs. My previous TV is now used to see live recording from ip cameras, so it is off only when we sleep. Come back to me in 2030, or even 2025.
@@Adures I’m glad you repurposed your displays and it works for you, but it doesn’t change what I said. As far as your longevity concerns there are tons of people who’ve had oled tvs for 6+ years with no issues. Different displays for different use case scenarios.
@@whocares3252 dont let yourself be fooled... oleds pixel lifespan today is still the same as 5 years ago, the difference today is that they created layers of protection systems Burn-in is never a thing but pixel degredation is. Current oleds have advanced pixel monitoring system, so when centain pixel of the screen degrades(burn-in) they would reduce brightness of surrounding pixel or the whole screen altogether. The result of this is you think the tv is perfect because you cant see any burn-in but the picture quality degrades overtime OLED brightness marketing is also a sham they use 2.5% window instead of the 10-15% mini-led, and even if its capable of doing so at 10-15% it would surely degrade the pixel faster 😱

I legit love my X85J. I chose it over OLED due to needing higher brightness. It may have fewer dimming zones, but i really can only see blooming on stuff like game loading screens; never in a movie or when action is happening. The OS is waaaaaaaayyyyyyy better than what other things I've used. I tried the LG C1 OLED at my friends house and that had such a terrible experience using the thing. On top of that, I really couldn't notice a huge gap in picture quality. Sony's processing and color science look way more natural than LG too.

Two equidistant speakers outputting the same signal, or a mono signal (no stereo information) will come through as a "virtual center channel." So since dialogue is 99% in mono, it will just appear as such. This is why the argument for well placed bookshelf speakers is so strong in my opinion; better stereo image, better frequency response, and way more options. Downsides would be no simulated atmos, and the size might be problematic in small spaces.
Yeah, but the problem is that if you mix a surround track down to stereo (considering most DVDs and Blu-rays only have a surround track and not a separate stereo track), it’s going to have too much dynamic range when compared to a properly mixed stereo track, leading to parts where the dialogue is too quiet that you have to turn the volume up, only to burst your eardrums when there’s an explosion. By separating the dialogue through placing it in a center channel, you can just adjust each channel separately so that the dialogue sounds right without having to worry about the other channels.
Well placed bookshelf speakers works great if you are alone right in the center of the screen, but a lot of people don't buy a huge tv to be alone in front of it, so a center speaker would be better

If you have a TV with a variable line level analog output (follows the volume of the TV), you could connect an amplified subwoofer directly to the TV and then simply tweak the crossover frequency until things sound decent and it will work very well for improving audio without a soundbar. If the TV has goods mids and acceptable highs, it works great, especially for scenarios such as a bedroom TV.
The s-center in combination with a Sony sound bar is supposed to complement the sound bar and place dialog closer to the person who is actually speaking. The TV speaker is surprisingly decent and I’m really curious to know how well that works.
Dude! I've paused at 13:47 due to the mentions about the sound. There's a LOT in that TV sound wise that the out of the box experience does NOT utilise! It's insane. We've yet to get the X95K into my work but the 55X94K sound for example is fantastic for a TV. Not in the same way that a properly configured Sony OLED would sound but MUCH better than most other models out there. It's not just as simple as 2 poor stereo speakers plonked at the bottom of the set. Whenever setting these up, they always require some tweaking in the settings for them. Also, turning on Dolby Audio makes a massive difference. Turn off surround mode (it's not great) Dialogue enhancement anywhere between 2-4, depending on personal preference EQ vaules of Max, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 4 (My preference) Fire up the volume offset too That's what almost all of the TVs in my shop are set up with (Sony retailer in the UK). Why do so many think cinema is the most accurate OOTB? It's not, custom is and it's like that on all Sonys and has been for years. It's just like filmmaker which they don't have because the UHD Alliance requires D65 white point for filmmaker which Sony doesn't use.

The LG C1 is great as long as your eyes aren't sensitive to judder. LG Televisions just don't handle motion anywhere near as well as Sony and that's why I personally went Sony when I decided to buy. Everything else about the C1 is great. Especially now it's dropped in price. It has all the usual features you would want from a mid-high tier TV and the picture quality itself is great especially with HDR Content. Let’s get someone who knows more about TV’s to talk about TV’s as several incorrect statements regarding processing here. Sony processing values realistic colors, and it’s upscaling (can’t turn off) is generally considered the best around, so what Sony does with it’s own chips is important, and shouldn’t be confused with the Mediatek chipset running the OS/outputs.
For real. I've tested Sony against other brands with the same content and they dramatically outperform the other big brands in a few areas. Who wouldn't want their 1080p content or streamed content to look better?
The phantom center works perfectly if you are sitting in the center of the left and right speakers. But the further you come out to the sides the worse the illusion is. Making it a bad center configuration for a home with a wide- /multiple couches
Not only that but if you reduce the overall volume of whatever it is you’re watching you can’t raise/ lower the dialogue independent of the left/ right channels either At least with a dedicated center channel speaker that can be done
Honestly for most general consumers the adjustable location and high feet are a really great thing Sony did with this TV. Most consumers are going with the sound bar and sub option and this really accommodates for it. I had to buy some ugly after market legs to do what Sony did with this TV 👍🏽👍🏽
Why does everyone care so much about filmmaker mode. It's literally just a marketing/branding term like LGs ISF modes. The custom picture mode on the tv does the exact same thing. I know this is short circuit but it really grinds my gears.
My biggest problem with this TV (and all Sony TVs right now) is that you have to choose between VRR and Dolby Vision on each HDMI input. That means if I connect my Apple TV and Xbox to a receiver and then send it to the TV with one cable, I have to choose one or the other. I'm not willing to lose either one of those, so Sony lost my money. I went with the LG C2 instead, and I'm incredibly happy with it.
I was torn between this and the C2 and luckily found this as an open box for $1270 and just couldn’t beat the price. How do you compare your C2 to this?

If there is any "full range" content for Center speakers, it is designed for speakers with speech emphasis, such as TV-speakers.

... Great going there buddy, very trustworthy and reliable indeed
I was always a Samsung guy. However, the day I got the X90J my tv taste changed completely! The X90J blew my mind, the image is amazing!
This TV is absolutely gorgeous. I saw HDTV test and its side by side comparison with Sony Gold Standard cinema grade TV shows how far ahead it is from its competition.
Subtitle blooming is an issue but that is the by product of not crushing the shadows. If you have the bucks then its always a good choice to go and pay extra for Sony TV.
And it'll last
if lucky. or it will die just after guarantee period runs out... (my case)
Agreed, Sony is the way to go for me. I got a 55” A80J for nearly $600 off about five months after it launched, and I have been incredibly pleased with it. Quite the step up from the poor old 1080p 27” beater I had before!
LG oled all the way here
Am I the only one who thought it was a little lame that they didn’t try out that “use the tv as a center speaker” feature? Idk why but “it sounds like it wouldn’t work so we’re not gunna try it” sounds like a weird conclusion to come to when reviewing something. I’m genuinely curious how functional that is now
It's not a review though, not covering every little thing is what short circuit is all about, it's just a quick look
@@bacon.cheesecake I get that. Just seemed like that was the one thing I’ve never heard of before here. If this is a common feature I’ve just never heard of then yeah, my b
Haven’t they done this on another episode with a different tv with the same feature.
The processing is always on, you're just turning off interpolation, so the Sony image processing does matter. The image processors are not SOC's. different than the ARM SOC running the OS.
This is a misconception most people (including sales people) share. They don't realize the SOC and the image processor are separate.
If you don’t like oleds that’s fine I just prefer the better contrasts and like my blacks to be black. I would never use an oled tv or monitor as a static camera display. Different displays for different use case scenarios.
@@whocares3252 Sure, I think 2 years is not enough to claim "I have no burn in problem" as 2 years is really not a lot for a TV. Cheers.
@@whocares3252 dont let yourself be fooled... oleds pixel lifespan today is still the same as 5 years ago, the difference today is that they created layers of protection systems
Burn-in is never a thing but pixel degredation is. Current oleds have advanced pixel monitoring system, so when centain pixel of the screen degrades(burn-in) they would reduce brightness of surrounding pixel or the whole screen altogether. The result of this is you think the tv is perfect because you cant see any burn-in but the picture quality degrades overtime
OLED brightness marketing is also a sham they use 2.5% window instead of the 10-15% mini-led, and even if its capable of doing so at 10-15% it would surely degrade the pixel faster 😱
James: Dont get a soundbar, get bookshelf speakers
Also James 13:46 "Get a soundbar"
Well it's certainly better than built-in speakers, and you don't need to buy a separate receiver for it either.
2:46 needs to be an official picture in the marketing material for the LTT screwdriver.
I have the Sony A95K tv and those streming buttons dont actually work until you first press the home button. Super happy about that because the accidental netflix opening on other devices has been the bane of my existence
Sony's processing and color science look way more natural than LG too.
the c1 is so dim, also google os is great. i love my x90j 65
this review from him seems biased to oled and not sonys, the oleds are dim and get burn in. linus made a video that to fix burn it it pretty much scrubbs the pixels and loses clarity.
also samsung doesnt even support dolby vison or dts audio
c1 is just mediocre honestly
sure its a bit blacker but my tv is like twice as bright, there tvs are very HDR'nt
linus would have done this review better honestly
also with google tv you can install VLC and play any video file, it also has usb 3.0 support instead of 2.0 like the others
@@seeyouspacecowboy14 He's extremely biased, not just for TVs but for anything he unboxes. Doesn't take any product seriously or try to critically evaluate it. You shouldn't believe a word this guy says.
QD Oled lol
I got the X90J, and I'm content with it.
I could afford a bigger screen size than the OLED, and I know I'd be worried about burn-in all the time anyway, so eh.
Laptops need that hardwire on off mic and webcam switch. Such a good idea
Lenovo have done it for a few years now on most of their gaming laptops
About the center speaker (4:47):
You have to keep in mind that in surround media the center speaker is ONLY used for speech. It is (with very few exceptions) not meant for effects or atmo sounds.
Regarding the mentioned "phantom center" (5:16): This is created by L/R only. The actual center speaker is not used for this.
Especially if you don't have a perfect or calibrated setup, using the TV as a center speaker could very likely end up improving the experience because you can locate the speech very easy. There is a reason for engineers to implement this.
Please fact-check before stating stuff, otherwise you might loose your trustworthiness.
Custom is the most accurate picture mode on Sonys
Most color accurate Mini LED. It does lack dimming zones compared to others tho
The tcl c835 have less blooming and less local Dimming zone than sony(Tcl only has 200 Dimming zone). Although in a super dark challenging scene the tcl get a dark crush than sony.
IKEA Fjallbo with a 95-series Bravia is exactly what I’ve got. Love how that furniture works for a home theater setup!
The 85 inch version of this is the absolute best LCD TV on the market it's a totally different TV , the 65 isn't near as good
I’m so glad the editor kept the sneeze in
It's amazing how my 10 year old plasma still destorys most new TVs at contrast ratio, colour, blooming and ghosting.
(Panasonic P42GT60)
Only issue is 42 is starting to feel small, but it's such a gorgeous picture. Oh also, it uses 300-400 watts...
Please do some home theater videos. Easy non sound bar options!
Landed this in 75” for $1270 open box perfect condition (other than sticker residue on the back of the TV) absolutely amazing TV.
Bought a 75” version also for way more.. it was open box with a 2 year warranty for $2000. Great deal!
Turn off surround mode (it's not great)
Dialogue enhancement anywhere between 2-4, depending on personal preference
EQ vaules of Max, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 4 (My preference)
Fire up the volume offset too
That's what almost all of the TVs in my shop are set up with (Sony retailer in the UK).
Super happy you guys covered it though as I think OLED is still going to be king for most of our customers until Mini LED comes down a bit in price.
PULL DOWN WALL MOUNTS!!!???!!!! WHAT ROCK HAVE I BEEN UNDER TO NOT KNOW ABOUT THESE! Came here for the TV content and found the wall mount to be the best part of the video. Learn something new everyday

I'm like you... I don't care for all the fluff feature. In fact, I miss the old days where you could buy a commercial panel with no extra crap feature, just a premium panel. OLED for me personally but I enjoy the no bs review nonetheless.
I’m looking at getting one this week. They’ve been on special since and now retail for 1899 for the 65 inch. I wonder if LG might still be the better pick at this price point now.

I love the insight given with the back IO. All great points!
I love my C2 that I just bought on Thursday!
Definitely a little pricey there. I got the 55” X90K off Amazon for $1K and it’s been an absolutely awesome TV. Mainly use it for my PS5 at 4K120.
Custom picture mode is the most accurate setting out of the box and with Sony processing they are pretty much the best TV's for me...
can we get a good/ better/ best video for TVs in both the cheap and expensive markets? I don't have the budget for crazy expensive screens but I'd like to know what you guys think what's on the market. We mainly get a focus on one while briefly mentioning competitors, I think one comprehensive video would be really helpful.
Why do so many think cinema is the most accurate OOTB? It's not, custom is and it's like that on all Sonys and has been for years. It's just like filmmaker which they don't have because the UHD Alliance requires D65 white point for filmmaker which Sony doesn't use.
Sony’s center channel mode is better than most center channels. Also the center channel is the most important part of a surround sound system.

Calling yourself insane is lame dude.
My LG oled c1 is the best TV I've ever owned I love that it plays games at 120 hz and has a very good response time. Definitely check it out.
I Just wish LG Would finally deal with the motion issues because there would otherwise be a couple of them in my house in an instant!

Custom is the most accurate which is basically filmmaker mode
Let’s get someone who knows more about TV’s to talk about TV’s as several incorrect statements regarding processing here. Sony processing values realistic colors, and it’s upscaling (can’t turn off) is generally considered the best around, so what Sony does with it’s own chips is important, and shouldn’t be confused with the Mediatek chipset running the OS/outputs.
For real. I've tested Sony against other brands with the same content and they dramatically outperform the other big brands in a few areas. Who wouldn't want their 1080p content or streamed content to look better?
Exactly a nice set of Klipsch speakers are the best option. Soundbars have fake surround sound..
I nearly skipped this video or put it on my watch much later list because I thought it was from Digital Trends from the thumbnail picture haha!
The phantom center works perfectly if you are sitting in the center of the left and right speakers. But the further you come out to the sides the worse the illusion is. Making it a bad center configuration for a home with a wide- /multiple couches
Not only that but if you reduce the overall volume of whatever it is you’re watching you can’t raise/ lower the dialogue independent of the left/ right channels either
At least with a dedicated center channel speaker that can be done

Honestly for most general consumers the adjustable location and high feet are a really great thing Sony did with this TV. Most consumers are going with the sound bar and sub option and this really accommodates for it. I had to buy some ugly after market legs to do what Sony did with this TV 👍🏽👍🏽
00:01 that slap is personal
This video is worth it just for James "enjoying" the new screwdriver.
Priceless.
Crocodile Dundee is only 83 years old. Pretty bold of you to mimic him with that fingernail pick...
We need a compilation of all the ltt staff sneezing now.
Finally, what I expected from this channel
Great review.
The vanilla OLED from LG and Sony are just not bright. The QD OLED is not large enough.
The 85" size is the right set to review.
That Crocodile Dundee reference in the beginning❤
That's not a knife.
The 2022 X90/95k doesn't seem like enough of an upgrade over last year's X90/95J. Especially if you can find clearance stock of the 90/95J
X95k is not even an upgrade. It’s a blooming machine
The X90K is brighter than the X90J, but both are fantastic TVs. I wouldn't buy a K series of either model as a simple upgrade from the J series though.
@@anuzahyder7185 but it doesn't have crush black like any other MiniLED. Reason why most miniled have less blooming is due to crush black but with sony there isn't a single black crush
95J is in some ways a downgrade from the X95H
13:40 After getting an OLED, even this thing looks pretty chunky. But I get the point.
Aw man, they missed the chance for a perfect rhyme! "The knife slices and dices, and this TV displays your colors the nicest!" Lol
I work in a home theater store and I can tell you Sonys are my favorite TVs. They've got a little more user unfriendly through the years with their "smart" features but I'll pick it any day over Samsung's "SMART" features which make me want to toss it out the window every time I have to set one up. LG is a good TV too. Just not Samsung. Stop trying to outsmart me, it makes you obscenely dumb.
Thank you James or whoever wrote this, for pointing out the truth about garbage tv speakers and soundbars. REAL SPEAKERS PEOPLE, GET WITH IT
Those sony tv usually sound really good, there's obviously an issue when he tested them. That tv has 2 woofers inside, it souldn't sound like a cheap 100 dollars one.
@@LSandM-SpeakersFromEverywhere It may sound better than most, sony is typically a higher end product with thought put into it, but at the end of the day, a speaker inside a tv is only going to be so good.
I love when he mentions your brain creating a center speaker when you get left and right mixed together because I'm wearing headphones and I can hear him in my head. Obvious sarcasm.
I like the USD Tag beside the number of dimming zones at 14:04
You may not be a soundbar person, but the Sonos Arc is a great speaker array. I can't wait to get 7.1.4 with the Era 300s
Good to see you back James
Careful, you can also not agree to anything on LG TV's but if you do then certain features are turned off until you agree.

With this particular TV the center channel option only works with certain Sony sound systems. You need to go up to the Z series to use the TV as a center channel with ANY sound system.
There was one test with a Universe picture with stars where the OLED excelled and LCD couldn't display many stars. It'd be interesting how this one performs on it and also OLED vs QDOLED.
I agree. I wish all hdmi ports would be on the side at this point and on the left
3:30 you think plugging it in from the side is hard, try having to plug it in front the back. My TV doesn't have side or even down facing ports. They point backwards.
Gotta love having a "hardware switch" for the tv microphone... and then it has another one on the remofe anyways...
5:49 if it only supports Sony speakers, then wouldn't the sound signature be pretty similar? Which would make it a good center channel speaker.
my understanding is that the center channel feature only works with the four premium Sony Soundbars (HT-A3000, HT-A5000, HT-A7000, HT-A9)
I only enjoy Sony because of their sharpening, and the brightness, I personally hate OLED, too dark imo. Can’t wait until Mini led is available at a cheaper price than what the cost now.
Is this a comparison video between the knife and the tv?
Less of a review, but more of a personal preferences and biases in disguise.
