  • Hey Gang! Man are we excited to be back. You know we hate taking long breaks, let's get back into it. We've posted a few videos on our channel regarding RTA cabinets, but this one is different. We're always looking for ways to do things so they're better and faster and this method of assembling cabinets is the way we're going to do it moving forward, and we can't see changing any time soon. Using 3/4" staples to fasten these things together is better in every way shape and form, and with only 3 tools, anyone can order themselves some RTAs and transform their kitchen (or anywhere that needs a cabinet face lift) Thank you so much for all the support on the channel and Happy New Year!!
    These cabinets are from quavana.com our regional distributor in Houston

    I worked a large cabinet manufacturer for 12 years. This is very similar to the way we assembled them. The only exceptions being we had large hot melt guns for gluing. Also we ran the crown staple guns parallel to the sides fully shooting the side before we dropped the top and bottoms. Very quick method. On our assembly lines full cabinets were assembled and boxed in about a minute. Good job guys!

    • @stevenrwh
      @stevenrwh 2 роки тому +2

      I am in the cabinet business. The problem that I have noticed with the hot melt is that eventually it lets go under load. I have had people call me to come and fix their cabinets (not from us) where the manufacturer used a hot melt connection from side panel to face frame. Funny enough, the way I fix their cabinets is to use some metal clips from RTA cabinets to reattach the side panel to the face frame.

    • @TransplantHelper
      @TransplantHelper 2 роки тому

      @@stevenrwh you are exactly right. Generally speaking each side panel had about 20 staples shot in the so it wasn’t a huge problem. But through the years we changed glue manufactures and formulas several times. Often the problem lies in the temp of the glue being to low in the reservoir or line before application. As you said the clips are definitely the fix. I imagine you are great at your craft. Glad to meet you hear!

    A few years ago I did an entire 10x10 kitchen with these same RTA cabinets, I wanted solid wood and preassembled cabinets were way expensive. I used wood glue and all the brackets and screws, I recall that yes it was time-consuming but I enjoyed it, I felt like I was actually building something. These cabinets turned out rock solid and beautiful.

    A key assembly point is you start with the face frame on the bottom. This turns the face frame into an assembly jig. If you ever go custom make the face frame first then cut and assemble parts and attach to the face frame. Much better than box first followed by face frame fitting.

    Great demo. I like the extra staples at the end, even realizing that it's the joint and construction glue providing the structural strength.
    I believe in overbuilding when convenient and adding little cost. I especially like that the cabinets have no 1/8" panels.
    I've had to add mounting cleats to badly designed cabinets with a 1/8" (3/16"?) back panel.

    I felt compelled to come back and leave a reply after watching your video. I am currently doing base and wall cabinets from RTA (ordered directly from the RTA website) and have a large 10x17 kitchen. The first four I assembled were wall cabinets and took forever with the fiddly little brackets and teensy screws. Carpal tunnel in the making and sooooo time consuming! After this, they will be coming apart, glued and reassembled with crown staples. I cannot think of words that would be appropriate to thank you. I bought a Porter-Cable 18ga stapler and a gallon of Tite Bond glue and it makes assembly FAST and far more rigid. These are cabinets I would trust hanging on the wall now. The glue and staple method turns an hour job into 20 minutes. That will add up to $$$ in your pocket if you're installing 23 cabinets like I am.

    Love your channel. I do maintenance on the equipment at a major cabinet manufacture company that makes cabinets for the orange and blue big box stores. This is exactly how they assemble them except they use a clamping machine that holds the sides in place while they staple the sides to the face frame. Next station on the line slides on the top and bottom then staples them in place and then the next station uses hot glue and brads to attach the back. You are definitely on the right track and doing everything in an acceptable manner.

    Thanks for making this video as I previously stated below. I'm 22 "boxes" in to assembling all plywood RTA's. Regardless of the "brand name" on the sale, all my boxes were either from Vietnam or Malaysia. These are a quality product, excellent fits. Built the first using your method and found out the plywood was very brittle for toe-nailing with a brad gun. I opted to use polyurethane glue for the cabinet front to wood connection, and titebond 2 and 3 for all other wood to wood joints. Some 90 degree brad shots helped stabilize some joints, otherwise the glue and clamp method got the best results for me. I noticed there is a huge difference in construction methods per manufacturer, mostly how joints are reinforced. Fortunately, my first experience is with all metal corner and joint reinforcement brackets, far superior to plastic. Stud Pack, thanks for the video, and thanks for reading this.

    Wife and I just put together and installed 12 base and upper cabinets (first time, BTW). Something that's just as important is to make sure all the edges line up correctly. Our cabinets were very, very similar to these with tons of little brackets, same dados, use glue, etc. and we found that one of our base cabinet sides was off just a little (too long - i.e. maybe the dado was off a little?), so when we went to level it, it was impossible. We ended up having to use a hand plane to shave it down during install... So long story short, make sure you check that all four sides of your base cabinets are flush at the top where the counter top will sit and adjust if possible at assembly. The bottom really doesn't matter because your gonna shim it anyway.
    BTW... wish I had seen this video before we built ours. Good videos are hard to find. We ended up randomly finding some at Jarlin Cabinetry You Tube channel (not who we bought our cabinets from). They show all the steps including the brackets being installed. After seeing this video, I probably would have done some of it differently.

    Great demonstration! Not sure if you are familiar, but there is a brand of RTA cabinets that have the same robust materials but they come preinstalled with a male to female clip that securely holds the parts together, and only require a few taps from a rubber mallet to seat the clips and one screw through the center to hold everything securely in place.
    They are constructed exactly like the ones in the video except they have the preinstalled female clips on the sides, and have the male ends on the front and back panels. They even have the dadoes cut to ensure that they fit together properly. On average they take about 5 to 10 minutes to build a standard size wall cabinet (24 x 36).

      Construction adhesive is much much stronger after it cures. Also, if you used 1/2" or maybe 3/8" staples and went at an angle from the back to the sides the staples would be hidden in the back. Same thing if you go from the top or bottom.

      My son bought $18,000 of cabinets, and there was hot glue in some joints, more than half the time that hot glue was falling off. May stick initially, but no good for long term.

    Glad your vid showed up in my suggested vids-UA-cam unsubscribed me from your channel! You basically assembled it the way to do at the factory-on site. I might do this for my own kitchen.

    These guys are awesome. I once assembled a whole kitchen's worth of RTA cabinets mostly by myself and it took me a month doing it on weekends. Using this method I might be able to assemble them in a day or two with some help.

      I recently reluctantly used cabinets to go. I was in for the shock of my career and I must say some of the best cabinets I ever installed. They did not use brackets they use cam locks with a high level of precision. These cabinets came with the doors prehung and they were all in perfect alignment. So the wall cabinets had zero screws and the base cabinets only had screws for drawer slides and corner brackets. Cabinets to go certainly made a believer out of me and like you said not a speck of particle board.

    This is good idea,, just add few nails on the side panels to the back and it will be Mitch stronger

    Takes more time to get the materials out of the box and dispose of the packing to assemble a wall cabinet. I’ve done a few dozen homes in 3 years in SW FL. Easy peasy

    Not too bad. But you should have glue where the back goes into the sides. RTA cabinets are not all the same. These are not all that bad except as noted.
    As a cabinet maker we use dados not plows to connect the top and bottoms to the sides. We also glue the back into the sides. We add splines in the dado joints to connect the frame to the sides. All of that is done with wood glue. Construction adhesive tends to crack and come apart over time. Your entire cabinet is held together by dabs of construction adheasive and 2 plastic clips. Those clips get brittle over time and break. I'll give them 2 to 3 years before they start to come apart and loose from the walls. Twice the time to use lots of wood glue is well worth is well worth the three extra min.

      For a kitchen, or any modern furniture for that matter, I'd bet my money on screws and a proper polyurethane construction adhesive like Lepage/Loctite (Henkel) PL Premium. Especially in the case of assembling stuff from boxes. Wood glue is not structural, it creeps and most formulations are brittle and definitely not gap filling. PL Premium is a proven structural adhesive and it resists moisture. Cabinets are structural but almost never treated as such.

      I was thinking that wood glue would be a better option than liquid nails. Do you just use a Titebond or similar?

    • @DEW-fk7ij
      @DEW-fk7ij 2 роки тому

      @@johntherat339 We use tight bond II.

      @@rolfbjorn9937 wood glue penatrates the wood fibers for better grip. If the pieces are cut correctly you should not need gap filling. This is far better raw wood to raw wood. Dovetail slots, wood glue and splines with nails beats just about anything out there.

    We are remodeling our kitchen in a second home. I have planned all the cabinet sizes and planned to build them from scratch (I have done so three times in the past) but I may consider using these types of cabinets if wood prices keep going up. While watching you, I thought the time saved in construction, sanding, and painting may be OK for our next remodel. Thanks for letting us know where you picked them up. I am not typically a big fan of premade cabinets but the price of birch ply is getting nuts in our area.
