Unfortunately, the mule mechanic provides this pacifier for the Terran faction. It's actually one of the dumbest features ever implemented in history of RTS. However, both players played well, gg wp.
kind of counter to the proverb Lowko brought up in G1 "when ahead, get more ahead": This does not seem to work out for protoss vs terrans when massing ground in the midgame. Maxpax hits clem's army right before the first ghost can come out because he knows that his gas units are about to fall off a cliff in value. He knew his advantage was on a timer and had to execute an attack. Really impressive stuff.
Its seems like if protoss can perfectly deny any terran aggression and destroy all the medivacs that they can get a stable mid game, but if anything goes wrong like loosing a colossus its pretty much game over. We rarely see come backs from protoss v terran at this point and its kinda sad / boring because the game rests on a knifes edge, and then a robo unit gets picked off or some early pressure gets denied and then as you said, you start watching a prolonged death animation.

really shows how imbalanced this match up is. reason being that MMM ball is invincible without AOE and none of the Toss AoE options are viable in the lategame, storm/archon gets emp'd dodging a disruptor shot really is one stim click and vikings shred both colossus and skytoss so what can protoss do in a lategame scenario? ghost emp removing shields really is too broken to stay in the game imo, archons would be a viable unit for lategame toss but as of now 2 supply of ghost can kill 12 supply of archons and that just isnt fair.

August stats are in for Aligulac: PvT: 51.41% for Protoss. PvZ is at a historically even spot at 49.59%. This is the second month since January 2021 where PvZ hasn't been (usually grossly) Protoss-favoured. TvZ is at 49.63%. It's very slight, but this is the first month in soon to be three years on Aligulac where Zerg's favoured in both matchups (naturally, since Protoss is ~always advantaged in PvZ in Aligulac stats)
Since 2023, after the patch, if you consider ALL the tournaments on liquidpedia, PvT = 47.5%, PvZ ~ 50% Also according to Aligulac, since 2018, protoss has been the lagging race in term of EMP points. Meanwhile, if you only take into account of top tournaments, you will find PvT ~ 38% since 2023 Jan, after the patch, sadly.
It really is sad to say that the Oracle is one of, if not the best, units for Protoss. One of the only units for Protoss that actually has value throughout the entire game, and the only Stargate unit that is good in most scenarios. Phoenix can be good against certain army comps, but the other 3 Stargate units are just trash and not worth the crazy investment they require.

I find it super ironic how protos is the only race that can’t a move yet is called the a move race If you ever played protoss you know how flimsy their unit comp is. People complain about the disruptor needing one good hit when they don’t realize how weak protoss is without microing themselves
Really seems to me like Terran anti-air is almost as much of a late-game balance issue as the Ghost. The other races rarely seem to gain air dominance, and while that could be due to the greater variety of anti-air options available to Terrans, I wonder if it's due to the sky-high DPS-per-cost ratio of the Marine. Maybe it would wreck early-game interactions with Oracles and Overlords, or maybe it isn't the problem at all, but it seems like nerfing Marine damage to air might be worth trying.

@@irrelevantfish1978 Do you know thors have 11 ground to air range while tempest have 10 air to ground range with 60% thor's dps (33% thor's dps if they hit each other) and 50% vikings dps per supply. Mean while, vikings have 9 range, carriers have 8 launch range and 14 leash range (with 10% more DPS per supply than vikings if hit no armor), so most of time vikings outrange carrier. BCs also have 10 casting range of Yamato Canon. I don't think protoss has huge range advantage.
@@mark11tz Yeah, I guess "huge" is an overstatement, but Skytoss does have a _significant_ range advantage, in practice if not paper. For example, Thors' inability to clump and lack of maneuverability makes it trivial for Tempests to snipe the Thors on the edges while remaining out of reach of the rest. That means that with just a little bit of micro, a few Tempests can kite down an arbitrary number of Thors literally for free. Or in other words, en masse, Thors' _effective_ range declines substantially whereas Tempests' doesn't, if microed properly. When you factor in all those not-so-obvious details, Skytoss really does have superior range, even if it's not enough to achieve parity with Terran.

A question: Clem sent the SCV to check if MaxPax will start the Nexus. What stops MaxPax to send second probe to the natural location and once Engineering Bay is cancelled immediately stop the Nexus on the third base location and start one in the natural? True, some time and resources will be lost but this will pay itself by having second Nexus in the more convenient and defendable location. Is there any reason why this is never done by other Protoss players?
Because it doesn't pay for itself. A base cancel at the start is huge and typically game ending. Something that pays off in the future isn't helpful if that future is further away i.e. the whole build is delayed.

May be 1-2 seconds later. So, the delay will be between about 7 (best case scenario) and 9 seconds (worst case scenario). Is it so bad? I mean isn't it to delay the Nexus for 9 seconds (in worst case) but get more defendable/convenient location? Is the Protoss build so tight that 9 seconds delay will mess it up?

Protoss is ridiculously underpowered at pro level and essentially since the start of LotV. If toss wins at pro level, it's mostly with funky surprise strategies (e.g. the 57 probe - mass chargelot build of Zest) or sometimes with cheese, but almost never with proper macro games. I feel the only reason they don't buff toss is because toss is dominating the low GM league - but only because of "protoss bullshit" like cannon rush, proxy voidray etc., which doesn't work at pro level (and shouldn't). One of the worst decisions was nerfing the colossus (full damage only vs. light units) - this was THE central toss unit, especially vs. MMM and now it's countered (!) with marauders and it's exactly like Lowko said: The _orcacle_ is the best protoss unit. Nuff said.
At the top level, the default progression of the game favors Terran in TvP. That doesn't mean that Protoss can't make something happen to win; the issue is that the onus is squarely on them to do so.
I don't understand MaxPax's decision-making here in games 4 and 5. He knows he's facing a gigantic swarm of Vikings built to deal with his Colossi, so he transitions.... to the exact other units that are equally helpless against Vikings? I know Stalkers are supposed to be the Protoss counter to Vikings, which MaxPax couldn't do because of all the Marauders, but even Void Rays would have been a better choice.

My Theory has always been that MaxPax is actually a girl, and she just doesn't want all that exposure from a _girl_ being a _top gamer,_ or whatever stupid headlines will come of it. It's easier to be a faceless top cyber athlete, than be the new posterchild for inclusive gaming and probably a bunch of other less scrupulous things on the internet.
I will believe that MaxPax isn't a bot when we see his face and see him play live. Since we only hear his voice (rarely), I think he is a bot programmer. And let's be honest... Toss is still a total joke at the pro level.
This matchup is so sad. Terran Ghosts far too OP vs Protoss. EMP needs a huge radius nerf and shield reduction nerf. Right now, 2 clicks aoe entire Protoss army and removes 1/3 of their HP instantly. Feedback is also single target, vs EMP that's AoE vs casters so Terran have it far easier to counter High Templars too.

kind of counter to the proverb Lowko brought up in G1 "when ahead, get more ahead": This does not seem to work out for protoss vs terrans when massing ground in the midgame. Maxpax hits clem's army right before the first ghost can come out because he knows that his gas units are about to fall off a cliff in value. He knew his advantage was on a timer and had to execute an attack. Really impressive stuff.
Its seems like if protoss can perfectly deny any terran aggression and destroy all the medivacs that they can get a stable mid game, but if anything goes wrong like loosing a colossus its pretty much game over. We rarely see come backs from protoss v terran at this point and its kinda sad / boring because the game rests on a knifes edge, and then a robo unit gets picked off or some early pressure gets denied and then as you said, you start watching a prolonged death animation.

Always enjoy a great series cast by Lowko while warming up/working out! I'm the guy that finds youtube on the treadmills at the fancy gym just to watch Lowko while running.
Clem in my heart is the best Tarren to play the game. He struggles at times but he plays so dynamic and constantly takes out the best of the best like Serral.
If maxpax and hero wasnt playing we would only be watching zerg and terran games, and even though ppl love to hate on toss, i honestly think that would be the beginning of the end for sc2. The suggested new balance patch is not the answer. More drastic changes are needed.
I mean we have others like ShowTime, Stats, Classic, Creator and Zest as high level Protoss players as well but I do agree more tweaks are needed.

really shows how imbalanced this match up is. reason being that MMM ball is invincible without AOE and none of the Toss AoE options are viable in the lategame, storm/archon gets emp'd dodging a disruptor shot really is one stim click and vikings shred both colossus and skytoss so what can protoss do in a lategame scenario? ghost emp removing shields really is too broken to stay in the game imo, archons would be a viable unit for lategame toss but as of now 2 supply of ghost can kill 12 supply of archons and that just isnt fair.
They could nerf EMP to do a consistent amount of shield damage rather than straight-up removing shields.

PvT: 51.41% for Protoss.
PvZ is at a historically even spot at 49.59%. This is the second month since January 2021 where PvZ hasn't been (usually grossly) Protoss-favoured.
TvZ is at 49.63%. It's very slight, but this is the first month in soon to be three years on Aligulac where Zerg's favoured in both matchups (naturally, since Protoss is ~always advantaged in PvZ in Aligulac stats)
Since 2023, after the patch, if you consider ALL the tournaments on liquidpedia, PvT = 47.5%, PvZ ~ 50%
Also according to Aligulac, since 2018, protoss has been the lagging race in term of EMP points.
Meanwhile, if you only take into account of top tournaments, you will find PvT ~ 38% since 2023 Jan, after the patch, sadly.

It really is sad to say that the Oracle is one of, if not the best, units for Protoss. One of the only units for Protoss that actually has value throughout the entire game, and the only Stargate unit that is good in most scenarios. Phoenix can be good against certain army comps, but the other 3 Stargate units are just trash and not worth the crazy investment they require.

Really seems to me like Terran anti-air is almost as much of a late-game balance issue as the Ghost. The other races rarely seem to gain air dominance, and while that could be due to the greater variety of anti-air options available to Terrans, I wonder if it's due to the sky-high DPS-per-cost ratio of the Marine. Maybe it would wreck early-game interactions with Oracles and Overlords, or maybe it isn't the problem at all, but it seems like nerfing Marine damage to air might be worth trying.
Terrans anti air is on the another whole level, terran is just able to destroy anything in the air or just land the units or run away while covered by marines... which is just blob of huge dps

At least for high-level players, the other races seem to _almost_ hold their own, so I doubt it would take much nerfing to render Terrans incapable of dealing with Skytoss' huge range advantage or Zerg's insane spellcasters.
@@irrelevantfish1978 Do you know thors have 11 ground to air range while tempest have 10 air to ground range with 60% thor's dps (33% thor's dps if they hit each other) and 50% vikings dps per supply.
Mean while, vikings have 9 range, carriers have 8 launch range and 14 leash range (with 10% more DPS per supply than vikings if hit no armor), so most of time vikings outrange carrier. BCs also have 10 casting range of Yamato Canon.
I don't think protoss has huge range advantage.
@@mark11tz Yeah, I guess "huge" is an overstatement, but Skytoss does have a _significant_ range advantage, in practice if not paper. For example, Thors' inability to clump and lack of maneuverability makes it trivial for Tempests to snipe the Thors on the edges while remaining out of reach of the rest. That means that with just a little bit of micro, a few Tempests can kite down an arbitrary number of Thors literally for free.
Or in other words, en masse, Thors' _effective_ range declines substantially whereas Tempests' doesn't, if microed properly. When you factor in all those not-so-obvious details, Skytoss really does have superior range, even if it's not enough to achieve parity with Terran.

A question: Clem sent the SCV to check if MaxPax will start the Nexus. What stops MaxPax to send second probe to the natural location and once Engineering Bay is cancelled immediately stop the Nexus on the third base location and start one in the natural? True, some time and resources will be lost but this will pay itself by having second Nexus in the more convenient and defendable location.

Because it doesn't pay for itself. A base cancel at the start is huge and typically game ending. Something that pays off in the future isn't helpful if that future is further away i.e. the whole build is delayed.

Assuming that MaxPax send second probe at 1:16 (when he sees SCV leaving) and assuming that Clem cancelled the Engineering bay at the same time when he sees the Nexus placement (1:23) then MaxPax can get the natural at the same time. May be 1-2 seconds later. So, the delay will be between about 7 (best case scenario) and 9 seconds (worst case scenario). Is it so bad? I mean isn't it to delay the Nexus for 9 seconds (in worst case) but get more defendable/convenient location? Is the Protoss build so tight that 9 seconds delay will mess it up?

Protoss is ridiculously underpowered at pro level and essentially since the start of LotV. If toss wins at pro level, it's mostly with funky surprise strategies (e.g. the 57 probe - mass chargelot build of Zest) or sometimes with cheese, but almost never with proper macro games. I feel the only reason they don't buff toss is because toss is dominating the low GM league - but only because of "protoss bullshit" like cannon rush, proxy voidray etc., which doesn't work at pro level (and shouldn't).
One of the worst decisions was nerfing the colossus (full damage only vs. light units) - this was THE central toss unit, especially vs. MMM and now it's countered (!) with marauders and it's exactly like Lowko said: The _orcacle_ is the best protoss unit. Nuff said.

At the top level, the default progression of the game favors Terran in TvP. That doesn't mean that Protoss can't make something happen to win; the issue is that the onus is squarely on them to do so.

I don't understand MaxPax's decision-making here in games 4 and 5. He knows he's facing a gigantic swarm of Vikings built to deal with his Colossi, so he transitions.... to the exact other units that are equally helpless against Vikings? I know Stalkers are supposed to be the Protoss counter to Vikings, which MaxPax couldn't do because of all the Marauders, but even Void Rays would have been a better choice.
Maybe people just forget there is void rays in the game.

This matchup is so sad. Terran Ghosts far too OP vs Protoss. EMP needs a huge radius nerf and shield reduction nerf. Right now, 2 clicks aoe entire Protoss army and removes 1/3 of their HP instantly. Feedback is also single target, vs EMP that's AoE vs casters so Terran have it far easier to counter High Templars too.
