Holy smokes! I've listened to Zeppelin for 40 years and I forgot how good this song was. I finally listened to it with ear buds and the sound is outstanding! Everything I missed before just exploded, and I'm blown away at Robert's harmonica playing. Wow! Thanks very much putting this up.

As a 63 year old English guy listening to these old zeppelin numbers it's always nice to here your stories about dad and rufus mainly because that's the way it was in those days you listened to rock zeppelin, purple sabbath with friends but still went to the disco danced to earth wind and fire,chic kool and the gang etc,etc but as you have been discovering zeppelin I have recently discovered funkedelic,sly and the family stone so it works both ways those first 4 funkadelic albums are great having said that the 2 John's Jimmy and Robert were pretty amazing even today
Those drums. Damn. Bonham was such a powerhouse. He did what he did on a relatively stark kit, by today's standards. You can't help but be in awe of his talent.
I'll never forget when I was a kid and heard Bonham's drums on "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." So powerful. Being a 90's kid it still had to same impact almost 30 years after it's release!
I respectfully disagree that Bonzo's drum kit was relatively stark. Although the basic 5 piece setup, the size of his drums were enormous. Including a massive 14"x26" bass drum. He also tuned his own drums with a higher jazz type pitch. The best there will ever be. Godspeed Bonzo.
Zeppelin is the only band I know that consistently used existing songs as templates to build entirely new songs. In many cases you'd only recognize the original from the lyrics. If they didnt use the original lyrics, often you'd have no clue it wasn't an original Zep tune. Best band ever.

Takes me back to the summer if '80. My 13 year old son started his daily LZ concert around 8 AM. Now I worked til around 3AM at that time got home and fell asleep maybe 5AM. By the time he got to this I was fully awake and fancy g down the stairs. Bogey with Stu was another that always got the day off to a great start. Lived it so much. Of course he is such a Zep head..knows every note of every song.😀😀

He took me to see Duke Ellington and Count Basie in concert!! Then just a few months later I got LED zeppelin’s first album for my birthday 😊. As a kid when this came out and Zep were a new phenomenon the arguments that I heard others constantly taking part in were the old critics saying they were not true blues musicians and were massacring the genre. The fans were raving about them saying they were a true authentic blues and rock band. Truth is all these years later Zep constantly take my breath away with their virtuosity and interpretation of the blues and their own composition of blues rock. Nothing like them ever. I heard that the first time they jammed together they played a few bars and instantly stopped as they shocked themselves with the sound they created. Thanks again.

No bow. A Phaser makes the electronic signals generated by the electric guitar to modulate as if the sound is breathing large and small. Hard to describe but easy to recognize. I waited a long long time for you to react to this song. It’s my favorite song from Presence and maybe the most memorable Zep song to me. Sitting in my driveway is my dads old 1969 ford pickup crew cab. When I was 17 in 1976 I drove that truck with all my buddies down to the Tape King record store and we bought the newly released Presence album. We drove back to my buddy’s house and we all listened to it. I love this album but Nobody’s Fault But Mine was my instant favorite.

Glad to hear your stories with your father. I'm the same age, but lost my father a long time ago. He knew everything about Zeppelin and The Eagles. I was already into both, but after getting out of the service, I introduced him to U2 and som other bands. But Zeppelin will allways be number one.
Love the way you lean toward the camera and give a reference. These songs are great, but didn't come out of nowhere. Your encyclopedia for a brain going off at random reminders is exactly why I tune in.
You can hear the band's angst in their sound, reflecting the spirit of the band at that time, with what was going on in their lives (addictions, car accidents, wanting to leave the band, etc). I've always thought the studio version was far superior than the live versions, because it was more angry, more desperate, more raw. Perhaps the later live versions didn't capture the pure dispair of the studio version because their heads were never quite in the same helpless place again.....until Karac's death, of course.
They toured in 1977 (2 years prior to Knebworth), which was also AFTER the accident. That tour was cut short because Plant's 5 year old son died mid-tour. It took them 2 years to go back out on tour because of that.
This is one of my all-time favorites. Performed live this was stratospheric. And then performed acoustically (Page/Plant UnLedded) this song has so many layers. Nobody's Fault is easily one of the most under appreciated songs Led Zeppelin ever recorded. Thanks for this excellent review, Soul Train Bro.

Don't get how people don't have Presence as one of their favorite albums. Just Nobody's Fault and Achilles Last Stand make two of their best songs ever, then throw in the funky, creative For Your Life, Royal Orleans, and Candy Store Rock just blows away 100% of the competition. Some of their most sophisticated, driving, creative rock 'n roll you'll ever hear
Many thanks for your measured and well researched reviews. It's wonderful to see your respect for what Led Zep has given us all. There was a rich abundance of cross-pollination of blues and rock 'n roll going on the '70's (if only Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson et al had played with Led Zep) British bands would listen together to LP's they'd just bought back after touring in the States. The coolest band would have the best selection and have bragging rights. Black American blues had an easier time in the UK, than in the States, (from what I understand) But is 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' a direct rehash and pilferring of Blind Willie Johnson's heartfelt blues or just a cross-pollinated plant grown in the fertile soil of trans Atlantic blues and rock 'n roll ? There doesn't seem, to my ears, to be the same song or feel. 'When the Levee Breaks' is like this too..it became anglicised and Bonham-ed out. Led Zep's version is just so different, so no wonder they thought they could get away with plagiarising. It is wonderful that you and your pop, like all of us, can just trip and enjoy both Blind Willie Johnson and Led Zep. One thing is dead certain...we will never see their like again. Adopt Rufus ! You'll miss him when he's gone. 'Can't live with him, can't live without him' ! Keep up the good work Soul Train !
There is a video on UA-cam titled "What Made John Bonham Such a Great Drummer" or something to that effect, and it's very insightful and interesting. Most drummers follow along with the bassist; Bonzo was mostly in lockstep with Jimmy Page. He was definitely unique, and it made him legendary.

I never thought with this kind of inspiration rock & blues rock would die or did it ? It feels so.. . Maybe by your grace and presence you can resuscitate this art back to life again. When i was growing up, seemed like every one out of three youngsters aspired to be musicians. Dope has snuffed out ambition. Desire to be !

DAMN is a good reaction! It was mine when I heard it. It's my favorite song next to When The Levee Breaks. That's another DAMN song. Even though Zeppelin heavily borrows from old blues masters, I like the fact they do it so well. The sad fact is no one would probably hear names like Memphis Minnie or Blind Willie Johnson or Robert Johnson if it weren't for them, especially in America which is even worse. Like JPJ had a heavy hand In Through The Out Door, Jimmy Page had heavily hand in Presence. I particularly love this song when they do it in concert next to Over The Hills And Far Away. I suggest the August 11th Knebworth show where they do this song and Over The Hills. It's outstanding! In fact, the first half hour, in my opinion is pretty damn flawless.
Page and Plant did an unplugged show around 1995 called "Unledded" in which they do an entirely different version of this song that is really worth a listen. Their take on "Kashmir" from this same project is also phenomenal.
I’ve noticed most people steal reactors to a lot of Zep blues infused power music. There are so many cover bands who play blues rock at bars but nothing like Zep. People love it. I went to a blues fest where a number of highly awarded current straight blues bands played and the finale was a cover of Zep’s Rock n Roll and everyone got up. They didn’t even bother to touch one of their blues numbers. Plant really lets his air siren vocals in the blues songs and yes Plant is incredible when he plays the harmonica. I have read that he used to tell Bonham how he would like him to play drums sometimes for a particular song. The point is Plant is so gifted in musical composition/feel. You can hear how he uses his voice as an instrument to compliment a particular piece.
Haven't written since you've been back. Great to see you're up again! Going to get a bit off track here, as you well know Old American Blues were a very big influence on Zep. One of the other influences of them and someone of the era just before them is Joni Mitchell. Plant and Page were Huge fans. Plants folk introduction was Joni, would be fantastic to see your reaction on One of the Greatest Female Artists of all time. Her music has been called genius by Cohen, Crosby, Stills,Nash & Young and many many others.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant partnered again in the mid 1990's and issued an album with an updated version of this song. You would not recognize it. Look for album "No Quarter".

Gawd, I forgot how powerful this was!
You can hear the band's angst in their sound, reflecting the spirit of the band at that time, with what was going on in their lives (addictions, car accidents, wanting to leave the band, etc). I've always thought the studio version was far superior than the live versions, because it was more angry, more desperate, more raw. Perhaps the later live versions didn't capture the pure dispair of the studio version because their heads were never quite in the same helpless place again.....until Karac's death, of course.
They toured in 1977 (2 years prior to Knebworth), which was also AFTER the accident. That tour was cut short because Plant's 5 year old son died mid-tour. It took them 2 years to go back out on tour because of that.
This is one of my all-time favorites. Performed live this was stratospheric. And then performed acoustically (Page/Plant UnLedded) this song has so many layers. Nobody's Fault is easily one of the most under appreciated songs Led Zeppelin ever recorded. Thanks for this excellent review, Soul Train Bro.

Monumental. This has been my favorite song since I purchased the Presence album in ‘78...the first record I ever bought with my own money.
if I had to choose a top ten of my fav Led Zep songs this is in the top 5 - top 3 is more like it.

This live version is at Knebworth 1, I went to the 2nd concert, around 100,000 were there including The New Barbarians for there only gig in the UK

Don't get how people don't have Presence as one of their favorite albums. Just Nobody's Fault and Achilles Last Stand make two of their best songs ever, then throw in the funky, creative For Your Life, Royal Orleans, and Candy Store Rock just blows away 100% of the competition. Some of their most sophisticated, driving, creative rock 'n roll you'll ever hear

Many thanks for your measured and well researched reviews. It's wonderful to see your respect for what Led Zep has given us all. There was a rich abundance of cross-pollination of blues and rock 'n roll going on the '70's (if only Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson et al had played with Led Zep) British bands would listen together to LP's they'd just bought back after touring in the States. The coolest band would have the best selection and have bragging rights. Black American blues had an easier time in the UK, than in the States, (from what I understand) But is 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' a direct rehash and pilferring of Blind Willie Johnson's heartfelt blues or just a cross-pollinated plant grown in the fertile soil of trans Atlantic blues and rock 'n roll ? There doesn't seem, to my ears, to be the same song or feel. 'When the Levee Breaks' is like this too..it became anglicised and Bonham-ed out. Led Zep's version is just so different, so no wonder they thought they could get away with plagiarising. It is wonderful that you and your pop, like all of us, can just trip and enjoy both Blind Willie Johnson and Led Zep. One thing is dead certain...we will never see their like again. Adopt Rufus ! You'll miss him when he's gone. 'Can't live with him, can't live without him' ! Keep up the good work Soul Train !
There is a video on UA-cam titled "What Made John Bonham Such a Great Drummer" or something to that effect, and it's very insightful and interesting. Most drummers follow along with the bassist; Bonzo was mostly in lockstep with Jimmy Page. He was definitely unique, and it made him legendary.

I never thought with this kind of inspiration rock & blues rock would die or did it ? It feels so.. . Maybe by your grace and presence you can resuscitate this art back to life again. When i was growing up, seemed like every one out of three youngsters aspired to be musicians. Dope has snuffed out ambition. Desire to be !

DAMN is a good reaction! It was mine when I heard it. It's my favorite song next to When The Levee Breaks. That's another DAMN song. Even though Zeppelin heavily borrows from old blues masters, I like the fact they do it so well. The sad fact is no one would probably hear names like Memphis Minnie or Blind Willie Johnson or Robert Johnson if it weren't for them, especially in America which is even worse. Like JPJ had a heavy hand In Through The Out Door, Jimmy Page had heavily hand in Presence. I particularly love this song when they do it in concert next to Over The Hills And Far Away. I suggest the August 11th Knebworth show where they do this song and Over The Hills. It's outstanding! In fact, the first half hour, in my opinion is pretty damn flawless.
Page and Plant did an unplugged show around 1995 called "Unledded" in which they do an entirely different version of this song that is really worth a listen. Their take on "Kashmir" from this same project is also phenomenal.
I’ve noticed most people steal reactors to a lot of Zep blues infused power music. There are so many cover bands who play blues rock at bars but nothing like Zep. People love it. I went to a blues fest where a number of highly awarded current straight blues bands played and the finale was a cover of Zep’s Rock n Roll and everyone got up. They didn’t even bother to touch one of their blues numbers. Plant really lets his air siren vocals in the blues songs and yes Plant is incredible when he plays the harmonica. I have read that he used to tell Bonham how he would like him to play drums sometimes for a particular song. The point is Plant is so gifted in musical composition/feel. You can hear how he uses his voice as an instrument to compliment a particular piece.

Going to get a bit off track here, as you well know Old American Blues were a very big influence on Zep. One of the other influences of them and someone of the era just before them is Joni Mitchell. Plant and Page were Huge fans. Plants folk introduction was Joni, would be fantastic to see your reaction on One of the Greatest Female Artists of all time. Her music has been called genius by Cohen, Crosby, Stills,Nash & Young and many many others.
I love that Led Zepp has such a Blues feel.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant partnered again in the mid 1990's and issued an album with an updated version of this song. You would not recognize it. Look for album "No Quarter".
One of my favorite solos... even that sour note he hits and has to bend to fix. You can tell it was all improvised.
