    txg.ca - The issue of ball compression ratings is frequently brought up by golfers of all skill levels, but does it actually change your ball flight or is it all based on feel preferences? We tested a very soft compression ball, the Wilson Staff Duo Urethane, against a firm compression ball in the Srixon Z-star XV using GC Quad and analyzed the data. See which type of golf ball is best for your game!

    You guys do some of the most interesting golf stuff on UA-cam. Every episode involves an experiment and analysis of results. Nobody on UA-cam presents these types of studies so well. The only other way to get this type of information would be to work within the major manufacturers.

    My 14 year old daughter off HC 5 plays the DX3 Urethane in the UK. We absolutely love the compression, soft feel off the club face and the grab on the greens, not forgetting the unbelievably low price per dozen. My understanding is the main difference between golf balls with premium covers is around and approaching the green. Would have been good to line up the top six urethane balls to compare grab, check and back spin from 90, 60, 30 & 15 yards in with a wedge

    This is funny because I went from the Srixon XV to the Wilson DUO U simply from feel on greens. I swing at 110 and I haven't lost any distance with the Duo U, but the FEEL is so different. It started with the putter and I am addicted to the feel of the Duo U. There are so many good quality golf balls out there that you just need to pick out the ball that feels the best. If you like soft, the Duo U is for you. Great video fellas.

    I tested the Maxfli 35 compression in 48 degree temps and I wasn't disappointed, and putting was great. Shooting a 76 on a cool windy day in spring, no complaints with a very low compression ball.

    Thank you both for a great presentation...very pertinent to me.
    I’m 67 years old; I’ve played golf for 55+ years; and, after two back surgeries and arthritis, I have lost a lot of flexibility, strength, and in so, ball speed and yardage (Presently a 14 handicap). I have used both the Wilson Staff Duo Urethane and the Srixon Q-Star Tour recently, and I concur that the Wilson Staff Duo Urethane is an exceptional option for us older guys with slower swing speeds. Interestingly (and as you both surmised), I did find the Wilson Staff was extremely soft, gave me added yards on ALL shots, but for short irons and wedges, I found it was extremely “spinny”, which is a good thing. You had offered spin numbers for the driver and the 6 iron...I’m curious why you didn’t show numbers for the wedge...? Anyway, a great session...keep them coming?

    Sweet video. I started playing the Wilson Duo's mainly because I went back to playing my Wood Bros "The Corker" persimmon driver and Ping Eye 3,4 & 7 woods (to make golf more fun) and didn't want to crack them with the harder balls. They perform wonderfully props to Wilson. I even play the Wilson Staff Zip which is right around 29 compression (I think) No complaints. Thanks guys.

    I played the cheap Duo balls when I got back into golf a little while ago. Loved the feel of the ball. (100SS driver). Iron play was good but around the green no enough spin. Went to the Kirkland balls and have had good iron play but around the greens have had to completely change my thoughts about how to play shots. I am aiming for flags now that the ball skips and stops vs landing zones and roll out. I don't play on the firmest of greens and weather is always warmer here in So Cal. I like both balls but man can I zip back a well struck Kirkland ball. May not always be the best thing for the shot but fun to see one walk back like the pros.

    I played the Srixon XV for several seasons and liked the ball though I thought it had a definite "click" at impact. For the past several I've played the Wilson Duo Pro (60 compression compared to 45 for a regular Duo at the time) which doesn't appear to be on the market anymore. Absolutely loved the matte yellow finish which was easily distinguishable from other balls and it performed well. Just beginning to look for a new ball and a new driver which will likely be linked in a fitting.

    Great video. I played this ball 2 days ago for the first time and loved it. I apparently have a slower swing speed (former back injury). The feel off the club face, including putter, was fantastic. Bonus: I felt like I could work the ball better than a higher compression ball.

    • @coobay978
      @coobay978 4 роки тому

      Drop the back injury excuse and just admit to yourself that you don't have a fast swing. I quit worrying about keeping up with the Jones when it comes to distance years ago and my scores are so much better. I hit a 7 iron 110 yards which is not nearly as far as the guys I play with but on the other hand once I accepted I'm not a distance player and started playing with the swing I have, I've gotten down to a 3 handicap. I'm 67 and play from the senior tees. Good luck.

    I've been playing for about 5 years so im no expert. I started playing with used balls i found in the woods, then went to used and occasionally new pv1 & pv1x. I would slice between 7-10 balls into the woods per round. I bought some chrome softs because they were on sale and did notice the slices when down to 5-7 a round. This year went to the duo low compression, I have turn the slices into a nice fade. Its a two part factor. One is the pace of my swing has become more consistent albeit slower but the distance has not suffered terribly, two is the science of the ball. Based on ur results I. Guessing lower spin+more time compressing instead of skipping off the club face results in less slices.

    Brilliant! Have long awaited your thoughts on the Wilson Staff Duo/DX3 Urethane, a very much underated golf ball in my opinion. Would have liked to have seen the comparison using a wedge, both full and half shots, just to see what kind of spin characteristics you would get. But the idea of testing at various clubhead speeds is awesome, just perfect for us weekend hackers......
    Will be testing this one, along with the Vice Pro Soft, Bridgestone RXS and Inesis 900 later this month, want to get deep into this.
    Inesis is the golf brand of a French sports superstore chain called Decathlon, you find them throughout Europe. They produce there own balls, manufactured in Korea for them. The inesis 900 is a 3 piece ball with urethane cover. If you want, can send you over a sleeve of 3 for testing.
    Best regards and keep up the great work. Your videos are simply unique, looking forward to more of them!!

    When I was at the last Champions tour in Calgary a month ago I asked Touring pro Glen Day about adjusting ball distance from sea level to Calgary which is at 3500 ft. His first answer was "usually 5%", but it was the second part of his answer which I took notice of. He said at these cooler temps(it was about 15C) you can't compress the ball anyway so it doesn't matter. So I asked him to expand on that, he says you can't compress the ball when the temp is below 65F. I found that interesting.

    Gents -- loving all of your videos and deeply bothered by the fact that you don't have a shop opening in Vancouver anytime soon...!
    I have a suggestion for a video that deals with the back and forth that takes place between strong loft and traditional loft enthusiasts ("that 7 iron is actually a 5 iron...!"). Rather than say that a club goes too far for the number on the sole -- the question should be how easily can you hit a target at X distance? Who cares what the number on the sole is? Do I have a 180 yard club in the bag I can hit easily and consistently?
    A test that had a golfer of appropriate handicap (Iron Matt's ball striking is a little too consistent...!) trying to hit a 180 or 200 yard flag with both strong and traditional clubs would be very interesting.

      Anything over 90. I've used tp5, which is around 85, and used others like tp5x, which is around 95. Both fly well. I've also used Callaway supersoft and Bridgestone e6. Completely off, and cut back on length by a mile. Around the greens, the supersoft would run out 5 feet even on a good strike while tp5 spun dead after one skip. My swing speed is around 110, so I need 90 or better. Tbh though most companies hide the compression rating from the general public, which is BS. Idk, just buy the most expensive name brand ball and it should be right (90% guarantee lol).

    Hey guys
    I'd really love to see:
    High spin driver with low spin ball
    Vs.
    Low spin driver with High spin ball
    So spin and launch maybe would be optimized, but maybe you would have tighter dispersion with one / less worksbility?
    Maybe throw in a similar 6 Iron test while you are doing it :)
    I am gaming an Epic SZ, and with some balls I get too low spin and ball drops out of the air. I also have dispersion problems.
    So I am considering a higher spin head and very very low spin ball.
    I like low spin balls on irons anyway, I know different for everyone of course :)
    BR.

    Awesome video as always!! I do have a question for the 2 of you being that I trust your experience and expertise. My nephew made the golf team (yay!). He's a 14 year old beginner.... what kind of clubs should we get him or how do we go about choosing them?

      @@acemakerjay really? Even for someone who really is a true beginner? His swing now will be totally different in a few months... that's my fear. I would agree if his game wasn't just developing. You really think that's the best way to go?

    • @acemakerjay

      I figure if he made the team he probably has a decent swing and can hit the ball. I would have him work with somebody nearby that knows what they are doing and can help guide you to what his needs are. His swing will change as he gets bigger and older but playing with clubs that don't fit him may hinder him as well. Just my opinion.

    COR coefficient of restitution re ball and club the faster you swing the COR diminishes so more gain at slower swing speed.

    As ever Guys thanks for an interesting Vid. I.m not sure if the Wilson Duo is available in the UK (I have never seen it in any golf outlets), but I use their DX2 and for my low swing speed it's just about perfect. If I try to use a hard/high compression multi layered Ball, apart from needing to sell one of my Grand-kids kidneys I find that with my Driver I struggle to keep it on line.
    So until I find anything that suits me better I will carry on using the DX2, which makes my Bank Manager and my Grand children very happy!

      Thanks for the info Robert, I have checked on AM's website and a few others but there is no mention of Wilson Duo. Strangely, on Wilson's UK website there is no reference to DUO either, yet on the US website it's centre stage. My suspicion is that in the UK its called DX2 and everywhere else its called DUO for some odd reason.

    What I've taken away from this video is just pick a premium golf ball that feel good to you. I prefer chipping and putting with a slightly softer ball more than that few extra yards on a drive. Project A / Srixon Q Star Tour for me.

  • @Snowman9K
    @Snowman9K 6 років тому

    Your comparison charts say Duo soft, which might confuse people because there is a Duo Soft model, surlyn with 29 compression (claimed). You tested the Duo U or Duo Urethane, whatever it's named. I know you were just using Soft as a descriptive label, not the model name.
    I swing 90 mph. For me the Duo U is slightly shorter than B330 RX off the driver. But off the irons I think it spins a bit more.

  • @ickybottoms
    @ickybottoms 6 років тому

    Interesting how close the numbers were on the 6 iron test. Perhaps we should be fitting balls to a player utilizing more of a focus on irons (our scoring clubs) and less on the driver. Matt clearly needs the high compression balls but for those of us with 100-105mph swing speeds, could we be losing yardage from our irons by using a high compression ball that is not compressing to its optimal level?

    On the topic of balls and compression, I was wondering about the purpose of Titleist AVX. From what I have seen on this channel and observed for myself, AVX is soft feel, low compression, low spin. How does it offer anything different from the likes of Callaway Super Soft, Srixon Soft Feel etc? Soft feel, low compression, low spin is a major area of the mid-price ball market, and here is the AVX seemingly competing with them, but with a high-end premium price tag. What justifies the price differential?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому +2

      We would probably have to do more extensive testing in this category, but AVX seems to perform a bit better closer to the green than other distance/soft feel balls in terms of spin.

    • @Artsyathlete
      @Artsyathlete 6 років тому +1

      The AVX cover (urethane) is the big difference between the others you mentioned. Its short game spin is why it is a better, more complete ball.

    • @FenwayJoe7129
      @FenwayJoe7129 5 років тому

      I did try the Callaway Supersoft . I like that one for folks with really slow swing speeds but for me it had lots of trouble holding green. I don't know if they have improved that on the 2019 models but it was always an issue for me. I like the AVX because of the urethane cover. Holds green much better. Very controllable. Lower trajectory too. Good ball in the wind and overall too. AVX and Wilson Professional are my two favorites.

    For anyone with realistic expectations 5yrds with a driver isn't worth playing a new ball. I think that 6i was what proved the claim. I've played most of the premium balls: Pro v1 & x, TP5 & X, project x, B330x & s, rx, rxs, e5, e6, e7 (Bridgestone was my go-to starting off), and the Wilson urethane. By far my Favorite was the B330s, RX, and TP5x (purchased bulk used). Due to the Wilson not being as popular it's hard to find them used, and the price tag for brand new is not justifiable. If the Wilson Urethane was sold for under $30 before tax, I'm sure it would take over the market. The 100yrd to greenside control is unmatched for that level ball, but for the price brand new, it's pointless when you can buy a bulk used higher quality ball for the same price or cheaper. The ball is great and it sits right under the Pro V's, Tour B's, TP5's, but above the RX and RXS. Again due to its lack of popularity/flashiness, people aren't going to pay that price to try them even though they may be worth it.

    Was there any difference in Matt’s swing speed between the shots? I was told that compression would affect efficiency/smash factor. Matt implied this by noting that he had to really smash the Duo to get a ball speed of 171.

    Ok, so I just watched the whole video. A comprehensive test with actual golfers at different speeds would be phenomenal. But I think you need to add a wedge in there. Compressing the ball with driver and trying to stop it near the flag are very different factors. I’m in the 220 yard driver distance club, but I’d sacrifice a few yards off the driver for a ball that’s going to hop and stop.

  • @pikeevans8559

      Easier said than done, but we are always aspiring to provide as relevant data as we can. At the moment, we focus on standardizing variables and eliminating as much of the inconsistencies that come with a human swing as we can. Our future vision is to acquire the use of a swing robot that will allow us to vary swing speeds and delivery characteristics at will for every video.
