    I still got my Alienware M17 R4 bought in 2012, I don't play games anymore so I used it as my main audio station as it has Soundblaster in it to power my Edifier R2000db speakers. I upgraded the ram to 16 GB from the original 8GB, changed my SSD from 128 to 250 GB, and upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Still beautiful after almost 10 years as it is slightly used as seldom used for gaming as I have my deskstop built for gaming. I just bought it for bragging rights with my nameplate on it. I bought it for A$3,500 in 2012.

    Mine's still running as intended, 8 years after it was made. I've seen dead gaming laptops half it's age, and I can replace any major part for 200 bucks or less, myself. Honestly, it's a pretty amazing machine, and these days you can upgrade them to a 1070 (with modded drivers) and extreme edition i7 (don't remember the model) that gets up to 4 Ghz. You can also use the cooling from the 17 r1, meaning you can pretty much double your heatpipes, and go all copper. Even in 2020, it can be pretty capable for what it's worth. Plus super cheap upgrades, and a metric ton of I/O inside AND out

    Dude I got damn near the same laptop since 2012. My brother passed it down to me and boy has it been through some hell. Multiple OS changes from Vista, Linux, and Win 8.
    Though just recently Ol' Betsy is starting to go out on me. The battery life is practically non-existent. Gets hot as all hell. Starts becoming unresponsive after repeated startups with no hard shutdown.
    Then the worst part, the AC Adaptor is really starting to make some popping noises. Like it would set my house on fire if I went to sleep with it plugged in. That and some keys stopped working as well. Keys "6789 and O" don't work.
    The old girl still got some life to her, and after watching this video may just me some ways to get her back on her feet. The clogged CPU vents for one are definitely an issue. The fact you can replace the graphics card is a neat feature. Could probably replace it with one of my brother's old graphics cards. Pretty much just gotta replace the battery, Power Adaptor, and clean up the CPU and she should be good to go again.
    I remember playing Mass Effect 3 on her, but now she can mainly run Flash games. I know it would be better just to replace her with a newer, slimmer laptop, but shes what I use during downtime in my room. The PC rig my brother built me, a Thermaltake core x9 I call Big Bess, has to stay in the living room. Can't really drag the big girl to my room when I'm done for the night.
    Anyway, sorry for typing a lot, just had to share my story since most these issues popped up last night. I don't know how I came across this video but I'm glad I did cause it could get Ol' Betsy back in shape.

      Jesus man, I've been fairly gentle with mine with it first came out. All keys work as far as I know. No popping noise from my power supply. Then again I probably wouldn't hear it considering how loud the damn thing is under load. I always keep it plugged in though.

Same with M17x R4 is still out perform its successor, Alienware 17 R3 lol. This was when Alienware built their laptop property to make it upgradable and not soldering them on. Nowadays, Alienware went to BGA and that's why it's crap for gaming laptop.

    +Psivewri I personally bought an Alienware M17x R4 off ebay a couple months back, It is the same thing but with an nVidia GeForce GTX 660m. It was $450 and came with an Alienware mouse, Backpack and mouse pad. I ended up selling all the extras for a nice cool $50. So $400 for this isn't bad. Some things to keep in mind is you must give the laptop some decent airflow or your GPU will overheat fast and get to about 96c, It will back off and for the next few minutes you will be running off 4 - 10fps while the GPU cools off. The 660m GPU does fine for me at the moment but like video says you can upgrade it, I personally will be upgrading to a 780m which will be about 200% faster. And you will most likely need a new battery cause after 5 years don't expect the OEM battery to hold its original charge. If you don't want to do that just keep it plugged in.
    My pros and cons about the laptop.
    Pros :
    • Good feeling keyboard with nice colors, Doesn't just feel like a cheap laptop keyboard.
    • Media buttons on the top right are awesome and I tend to use them a lot.
    • Has a full sized keyboard
    • Looks sleek, When the laptop screen is up it doesn't look fat. The style of the laptop fits the size perfectly.
    • RGB So you can have all the rainbow goodness you can desire.
    • You can upgrade the GPU and other things.
    • 2 ports for 2.5" SSD or HardDrives and I believe an m.2
    • Neat power button, It flickers as the Hard Drive spins.
    • Very nice loud speakers.
    • Selection of ports and even a method to lock your laptop if you wanted to feel more safe at a coffee shop or something..
    Cons :
    • If you have big hands like me then your palm will tend to hit the corner of the trackpad so you might hit/shoot something you don't want to while gaming. This can be countered via Alien Touch in the AlienFX area where you can adjust the sensitivity and something for "accidental palm hits"
    • Trackpad isn't the greatest
    • Heavy
    • My power cord slips out easily (Might just be mine)
    • The fans are noisy
    Overall I highly recommend doing this. It worked out so well for me cause I am at the moment traveling in an RV traveling.
    Also thanks Psivewri cause I will new be opening it up and getting all the dust out & reapplying paste. :)
    Thumbs up from me and I hope this helped anyone.

      Well, Recently I upgraded to an Alienware 15 R3 & sold my old one for $675. Keeping in mind I have a 1600 x 900 screen and not 1920x1080p but I don't think that would change much. If you can find one with a better AMD card it wont cost much more & will run much faster. If you're curious about the new one I paid $970 & it has an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060-6GB, i7-6700HQ, 120Hz screen and 8GB DDR4. Mint condition and was a steal :o

    Eurcom recently announced that they will be building smaller 10 series GPUS that will fit most of the casings in gaming laptops. As for the 17 R3, they were able to fit the gtx 1070. In all honesty, I would recommend buying a old 18 alienware rather than the 17, because of the spacing on the motherboard. This will allow for future gpu components to possibly fit within the laptop. As for the correct bios regarding the laptop, I recommend checking out notebookforums to find working bios for the upgraded gpu.

    Got the same laptop for $200 USD, slapped an additional 250GB SSD and a 4GB GTX 860M GPU, and am so proud of this rig it isn't even funny. It can handle pretty much anything I can throw at it. Even with the Stock 660M GPU, it is incredibly capable for a now 7 year old laptop, it will handle pretty much any modern game at medium to low settings, and any game id say 2015 and back at higher settings. GET ONE! Their really nice for upgrading due to the stupid amount of ports on the rig, the additional memory bay inside the computer, and overall very modualized design of the circuitry inside the rig (Hense the beefy scaleform and INSANE near 10 lbs weight, which is about double the average laptop weight.) This is definitely a rig that pushes the limits of what a Laptop is capable of if given some care and a few upgrades here and there.

      I've found some pretty good deals on GTX 780M laptops, which are faster than both the 7970m and 960m, and the 960m is actually beaten by the 7970m by about 20% difference. Also I find the alienware's upgradability very valuable, and an OEM Dell machine seems like it wouldn't be as modular as something like an Alienware or a Sager, two brands I've been looking into

    • @ShadowTheNinjaKitty
      @ShadowTheNinjaKitty 7 років тому

      Kevin Akerberg I believe the Dell is actually more modular. It only takes 1 screw to get to the internals, and you can get to the ram, ssd, and battery from there. I just thought that the Dell was a much better value compared to the alienware. Alienware is around $750 used. Which is about $200 more for 20% better performance. - While you can indeed replace the video card keep in mind that there are only 3 models that are officially supported by the OEM BIOS, any newer models are unlikely to work unless you get a modded BIOS for it.

      If you have never done this then it explains your bias.

    • @Jason-lu3rl
      @Jason-lu3rl 7 років тому +3

      Tom Tapp but the cost of those upgrades are costs that aren't worth what you get a old cpu and 980m, which if you were smart might aswell put a couple of hundreds more and get a new machine with newer gen cpu and gtx 1060 upwards in terms of value for your dollar its way better and your covered if it fails for 1-2 years and your getting 2x upwards performance, better then wasting a couple hundred and not having any guarantee on life span. Pure economics mate at the end of the day, its using your money wisely. If you feel upgrading old tech is the way good for you and best of luck.

    • @tapptom
      @tapptom 7 років тому +7

      Jason Morel that’s the very reason it’s worth it.
      You go buy your “new” msi or rog that has the cpu and gpu soldered to the motherboard and you have to run W 10.
      Get that new msi and when you burn up that GPU ....go buy another one. That’s how those companies are playing you “mate”....you can’t change/REPLACE cpu or gpu. Gotta buy new motherboard or new PC.
      Alienware and Sager lets you upgrade cpu like a 940xm that you can overclock because it’s not locked, to 3.8 mhz. Upgrade GPU to 980m that will rock those newer gpus that are soldered to MB.
      Got it now? Coming from someone who likes potatoes

    As someone who's used one of these machines for about a year, I can say that It's actually a surprisingly viable machine for gaming, and I even edit videos on it. I have however had to replace one RAM module, and my SSD, as they were as old as the laptop, and failing. With that said, that wasn't hard for me to diagnose, and fix, and the potential upgraded power for the machine is surprisingly high, if you're willing to do some modifications for a later mxm gpu. In addition, temps are quite good, I can run my 675m overclocked to 700 mhz and still easily stay under 70 C with an adjusted fan curve. The 3630QM is still a decent but not exceptional cpu, but the best option for the laptop is the 3940XM, which is an impressive cpu, even today.
    EDIT:
    I am now running a Quadro p4000 in it, which falls between the 1060, and 1070. Having a laptop of that performance level, especially with how good it's cooling and keyboard are, nowadays is actually really good for the total cost.

I took out the HDD and replace it with a Samsung 860 EVO mSATA 500GB. Portacom, in Perth, has ordered me a new screen. So far it's cost me $180 for the SSD and $220 for the screen.
    I didn't know about the Alienrespawn software. I could replace the HDD and copy respawn and then reinstall it on the SSD. The laptop is running now but lacking in the original software. If I can get the original software another way I'm happy to do that. Otherwise go about getting respawn. Any suggestions?

    Just bought a new laptop last year. Kinda regret it. Next time (perhaps in 3-4 years), I'm going to buy second hand laptop. While I'm quite familiar with computer stuff, I'm not that tech-savvy either. Opening a laptop, cleaning all the vent, and re-pasting the CPU is something I don't really want to do. So perhaps I'm going to buy it at a store that specialized in 2nd hand laptop. It may be a bit expensive, but those stores already take cares all things like cleaning, repasting, checking for any damaged parts, and re-installing fresh windows.

      Caseko CSK build ur own computer cheaper and it is fully upgradable watch how to build a computer. Idk why u buy laptops laptops suck there only for portablity

    • @casekocsk

      I have a full tower desktop, quite powerful too... but the power consumption is big (obviously) and the electric bill rises... It's alright when I playing AAA PC games or doing heavy duty stuff... But most of the time I'm just browsing the internet, watching movies, and all other light stuff. So I want to buy another computer with very light power consumption but still capable doing some medium stuff (like photoshop or sketchup)... and while at that, this time I want something that somewhat portable. So another desktop albeit the green one is kinda redundant. I'm also considering mini PC or something like that.

      Caseko CSK Buy from a Windows certified refurbusher, I think that's what you call them... And yea it's true my desktop/ gaming pc uses way to much power, so much that I can't stay in my room with my door closed for more that 3 hours because it gets really hot :'v

    • @casekocsk
      @casekocsk 7 років тому

      That is wow... My PC doesn't get too hot nor drawing too much power. It's working normally. I just want something that use less power. It's overkill to use gaming PC for just daily browsing or watching youtube... and it's also killing my wallet (electric bill).

    Looking at pre 2018 Alienware laptops, one can really appreciate the build in and out. To this day the other flagship companies still are missing half of what AW offered years ago. Yeah they are heavy as shit, which is why they have that solid feel that very few laptops offer. Works for me as im not mobile with mine, if you are...defo AWs are not for you nor your back. RGB lighting can be a bit too much for some but you can turn it off. Keyboards feel great throughout the models and have perfectly uniformly diffused LED lighting.

    Man, I bought an M14xR2 and initially, it was great. I could run almost anything on high settings. Now I have trouble with frames on CSGO on low settings. I'm really confused with such of a significant drop. I've ended up factory resetting my computer like 3 times and nothing changed.

    I bought a used Alienware 17 R2 laptop last year with 16 gigs of ram, a 980M gpu and a i7 4720hq, I added a couple ssd cards and cleaned out the fans along with a fresh install of win10. The screen is absolutely amazing for art/colours, I use it with my cintiq and art programs like photoshop. It’s built like a tank and It even plays new games on high, for example I’m currently playing control on max setting. I don’t play online games and I’m happy gaming at 30fps so this laptop is awesome for me. So ya depending on the laptop buying a used Alienware for a good price is absolutely worth it.

      I kind agree with clorox here. Dell's entire product line except for high end stuff is made of really cheap plastic and even the new ones have hinge rot. You even get low-end components with a high price premium. I recently saw a 600$ Dell laptop with a Celeron N3050 and 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Definitely an unbelievable ripoff.
