I do love your work. I have an old Toshiba from 1998, it's rather nice for what it is. I love the keyboard as it's miles better than the chicklet keyboards on modern laptops. Certainly a nice step up.
How did this laptop survive 20 years!? I had a mid-2000's Toshiba Satellite that barely last two years. I mainly used it at home but so many of its hardware components soon malfunctioned.
Loved the video. I recommend against using superglue on ABS plastics and, in general, the kind of plastics they use in laptops (usually ABS but it's not always easy to find the mark). It just dissolves and melts it instead of sticking to it. If you think fast and push the two pieces toward each other, you can melt them together but it's never as good a job as with, say, 2-part epoxy.
Yeah the Ethernet port won't work until you install the Ethernet upgrade card for this laptop. If it's anything like my Armada m700 it will be under a cover on the underside of the laptop somewhere. Mine had the modem only card installed so only the phone jack was connected with the Ethernet port covered with a plastic cover. But a second laptop I got as parts to replace the hinges in mine had the Ethernet/Modem combo card, so I installed it and now the Ethernet port works. ;)
Friends found 2 laptops in their neighbors' trash. One was clearly gone but the hard drive was working. The other was originally WinXP Pro but got Win7 upgraded but no product key. I should have cloned the drive before it failed. It needed just a new hinge and it looked like new. Dude, there are password clearing boot CDs. No need to wipe unless it's got Windows 2000. As for internet connectivity, have you tried installing the correct drivers? You might have to look for them separately. And make sure the BIOS sees it. Did you install the dongle correctly? That really should work.
I've got the same laptop. Replaced the Celeron with 900MHz Pentium III, but it still shows up that CPU is tacted as 700MHz one, unfortunately. Netherless, I'm happy it's running Windows 98 SE and W2k as my daily "internet radio receiver". :)
Reminds me of an old Dell that Someone threw out. I took it in and cleaned it up. Besides it needing a new IDE HDD I plan to install Windows 98 on it turning it into my vintage gaming laptop.
Nice videos man. What you could do with the PCMCIA WiFi or USB cards since they are older generations. You will most likely need to create or edit a wireless SSID that does not have WPA2 security, instead use WEP (TKIP (not AES) or no security for these types of testing for at least getting it online for the time being.
If you want to allow easy WiFi access to very old devices, it's easy to add an old access point. Use MAC address filtering and leave the network unsecured. This is how I connect my iBook G3 900 to my home network with sacrificing security.
Most likely the WiFi doesn't work because all modern WiFi routers require WPA2 for security purposes. If you dropped it down your network security to WPA or WEP it would most likely connect (but now you've opened a giant security hole in your network). It is very hard to find a PCMCIA card that supports WPA2 (only the very last generation of G cards will), and basically none of those have Win9x support (though they will support XP).

You gotta add more RAM on these laptop rebuilds, man. Makes all the difference in the world, and anything from around '99-2000 you can fit with at least a gigabyte of memory.
